    Could people kindly stop complaining about the cages I include only being sold in Europe. It is not my fault that you guys don't have as much of a range of suitable cages that we do. If you did I honestly would have included them in this video. It's not my fault so can you please consider that before complaining. Thank you :)

    Ahhh levels don’t increase floor space!!!! Eve though most information in this video is now out of date, levels never counted and never will count towards unbroken floor space.
    Also for any new hamster owners out there, the UK minimum cage size is 50cm x 80cm, that’s 620sq in 😊

    • @tezzanoia
      @tezzanoia 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I hate so much that people keep thinking and saying that multiple levels count as floor space, especially hamsters absolutely don't benefit from this at all and it's sad that this keeps being told. Also in Germany the bare minimum is even slightly bigger than in the uk with 100x50 cm for dwarfs and 120x50 cm for syrians (and honestly, if there's space in your home, it's always good to have a floor space bigger than the bare minimum)

    • @awaken77
      @awaken77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      levels are irrelevant for hamsters, but floor square is. the bigger - the better. minimal cage sizes are not standardised between countries, and not scientifically proven. so i'd use common sense, and adjust to individual animal, they have distinct characters too (like people). I can't have 100x50 due to space in my apartment. It's bigger than any of my furniture. My dwarf hamster is happy in 70x40 cm cage. It has deep tray, so he spends most of the time burrowing it, and very rarely visits upper floor. Previously he had very small (but tall) cage, 25x30 cm floor and almost cubical. He was chewing the cage all the time and running up and down because there was not enough space on the floor. Also, most of the wheels supplied with cages in a set, should be discarded immediately. They are often too small and rattling.

  • @andreathehamsterowner5096
    @andreathehamsterowner5096 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Ok, here’s the thing, hamsters need 360sq inches UNBROKEN space. That means two levels don’t count.

      That's very unfortunate, sorry to hear that :( Some cages are too high and in some cases hamsters can fall to their deaths. That's why it's better to go for a lower cage or put lots of hanging toys from the top so if they were to fall, there is a high chance it won't be a huge drop and they will land on something quickly stopping them from possibly injuring themselves and saving their lives :)

    If you are never I would like to point out, the cage minimum has changed for the US and Canada. It is currently 450 in March of 2020. Minimum tank size is now 40 gallons. Germany though has a larger max around 620 sq in. Personally I would say, if you have a Syrian go closet to the German minimum. Also, levels don't count as floor space. Levels are considered enrichment, so if you have a small cage with multiple levels it still won't be the correct size.

    Actually the "insect cages" ARE in fact useful for certain animals, just not a permanent hamster cage.
    For example the five gallon ones can be used for certain pet arachnids (for example this is fine for some tarantulas species) or as a "bachelor pad" for a single male betta fish (with proper heater and filter of course). I know of very few people in the fish and arachnid hobby that would object to this statement. True some arachnids might need bigger, but it's fine for many species, and five gallons is often considered the minimum for a single male betta.
    It also can be used as a TEMPORARY enclosure to transport sick small mammals/amphibians/reptiles to the vet or hold them during a tank cleaning. It can be used as a TEMPORARY quarantine tank for new aquarium fish. I personally use a five gallon critter keepers to TEMPORARILY house crickets for my various exotics to eat as well.

    Rosy_Pikachu - For some reason it won't let me reply to you so I thought I would do it here. Hopefully you will see this. That sounds awfully big for a pets at home hamster cage and a pink hattie cage. Are you sure you measured this correctly? :) It can be very easy to end up with the wrong amount by simply missing a certain thing. Just incase you have missed out something, when measuring length and width, you then need to convert the total amount of centimeters to inches. I find the converter online is very useful. Then times that together on the calculator and that will give you the total amount of square inches. Once you have done that then come back to me and tell me the result and I will let you know if that is suitable. :)

      I have a critter trail cage and I feel that they are the perfect size.However, mine is 3 stories and I have see some that are 1 story which I can agree that they are too small. The first floor is a regular floor. The 2nd floor has a floor on one side and a floor on the other and I have connected them using a tube and the 3rd floor is a nesting area.

But he is in a crittertrail cage for 3 more days, but the reason he's ok is because since my house is small with my supervision we let him roam in the suitable areas in my house and has a lot of toy. All I'm asking is for advice for my bin cage? Anything from toys to style will help, oh and nice video.

  • @Cemeterygirll
    @Cemeterygirll 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Hi, please reply if you can! I live in the USA. My parents know little to nothing when it comes to hamsters. My mom claims to have owned a hamster when she was a child, but that means that she forgot almost everything about hamster care. When I asked for something that was needed, like a glass tank, a good wheel, a playpen, and even sand for sand baths, she would always reply with "I never had anything like that for my hamster, so I'm going to ask an employee before we get it." She hasn't asked about the sand yet, but we're going to. My silent spinner doesn't work, and today she bought me a huge purple cave. I forgot to ask her about the glass tank. The only cage they had left was a critter trail. So basically long story short, I have the one with the hideout in the top, and the huge blue wheel, and the yellow tube that connects it. I personally hate crittertrails, and I've recently been trying to convince my parents to get a new wheel called the "flying saucer" wheel, and a glass tank as her cage. Her as in my newly bought female Dwarf hamster named Willow. Any tips on how to convince my parents to get a glass cage and the wheel? Maybe you can make a video on the benefits of glass cages? Thanks!

      10 year old hamsters? Wow lol. I think they have better hamster education and products in Europe tho, but not all US hamster owner are keeping syrians together in crittertrails with pine bedding feeding them garlic knots. I know from experience its very hard to find a suitable cage for hamsters here, not to mention toys and necessities. Pet store employees here are also ignorant and rude, I told one trying to convince my mom to get a 10 gallon tank that the minimum is 450 sq inches and she just rolled her eyes and walked away.

      Ralph James okay our hamsters don’t live to ten years. I’ll admit I research and watch hamster videos but I’m not thinking of getting one (I have gerbils) hamsters everywhere have an average life expectancy of 2 years though they can live for more but I haven’t owned hamsters but they definitely don’t have an average life expectancy of 10 years :’)

      Spicy Gift if you live next to a petco/petsmart, and go into the fish or reptile section they usually have 50+ gallon tanks hamsters. Usually any pet store has a fish or a reptile section that sells tanks. If this fails you can easily go to a big stationary/craft store and they sell bins that are more than 200 quarts, this usually can be sold for less than $30 Ikea also sells these bin cages.

    • @AaronPrice0406
      @AaronPrice0406 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pup82607 Gaming & animals because it’s not actually on the floor. Hamsters would run long distances in the wild. So if the whole entire cage was on the floor and wasn’t levelled then that would be great. But if it is levelled and it’s small, then the hamster won’t be able to run around.

    • @lauren3266

      Azzy-O Playz Broken floor space can be very enriching for hamsters.They don’t like large wide open space.

    • @AaronPrice0406
      @AaronPrice0406 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Betta. Fins. I know u are being nice about it. But that is the opposite of what a hamster likes. Hamsters would run long distances in the wild. That is large, open and wide space. They wouldn’t actually be climbing in the wild so it’s not as enriching as u may think. Yes some extra space can go to some good use. Just as long as there is enough running space on the floor. 😊. But if it’s a small cage like some shown in the video, then the top floor would be better off on the ground. 👍🏻

      You should save enough to buy a plastic bin that's a good size, they're not that cheap either. Also don't forget to buy a wire mesh to put on top of the lid for air flow , it doesn't have to be hard to the point where you need to have wire cutters to cut them, you could order them on Amazon. If you wanna know how to attach the mesh on top of the lid after cutting the spacing for it, zip ties or cable ties should do the trick.

    My hamster Marshmallow passed away a few weeks ago. I just wasn’t prepared enough or educated. I have a new ham named Creampuff. I just put her in her new homemade bin cage with two hideouts (she loves them). I’m going to add a homemade second level with hamster safe sticks! I’m so happy to have her and hope she lives a great life now that I’m ready.

    • @peachypetparadise27

      It depends if you are light sleeper or not. They do tend to make noise at night so if you struggle getting to sleep easy, best not have them in your bedroom :)

      Jill Love that makes no sense they could escape in any cage in any rom and it can be dangerous in many rooms and a bedroom us the least risk in which they can get hirt it also depends on the space availble in your room and wether you are a light sleeper or not , if you have a squeaky wheel or and if your hamster tends to be noisy . If you have allergies or you share a room with someone who does then I do not reccomend it .

    i used to have a big bird cage that we divided up in levels with custom planks (in which we made holes for tubes to fit in). he might not have had as much ground space, but if you add up all the layers, he for sure had enough. He loved climbing and hanging upside down from the roof.

    I have a cage like the mini Duna cage, it has 3 floors instead of 2 and in between the pink plastic plastic top their are bars their is also a tube whit goes from the bottom floor up and outside the cage slightly which Leeds the the middle floor,I house two roborovski hamsters in it and I find it a big enough size I have 2 houses in side so the have their space but they tend to sleep together and do most stuff together,would you agree this is okay(you can find the cage on petsathome)

    • @peachypetparadise27
      @peachypetparadise27  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have seen the Mini Duna many times and I'm sorry to say it's still too small, the levels are tiny in the cage. Roborovskis actually need more ground space than you think because they are so energetic and have so much energy to burn. A lot of people believe that because dwarfs are small they need small cages when this is not true, it is simply a misconception. Dwarfs have more energy to burn and are usually much speedier therefore require more ground space. Your cage should be at least 450 square inches or bigger and that goes for all species of hamster. Your two sound really bonded and it's sweet that they do a lot of things together but if you can find them a bigger cage, that would be great for them :) Just a recommendation, if you have the space then a Zoo Zone 2 is very spacious cage for dwarfs :)

  • @tezzanoia
    @tezzanoia 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sorry to say, but besides the glass tanks and the diy cages not a single one of these is suitable for hamsters. If you use German care standards a cage needs 100x50 cm of unbroken (!) floor space for dwarfs and 120x50 cm for syrians. This means that this space can't be split in two levels or two smaller cages next to each other like two connected 60x60 cm bin cages unless these are connected by removing one of the sides and therefore creating a continuous floor space instead of one that is split in half

    Fab video and so helpful. So glad you mentioned climbing hamsters. Acautionary tale to anyone with barred cages. Our last little fur ball Ludo was an avid bar climber. We didn’t think anything of it as we’ve had plenty of hamsters do it and always keep an eye on him. However a week ago when we were out for the day he had an accident. He caught his leg, fell from the top of the cage and hit his head. We came home to find our poor baby curled up in his bed. *upsetting description ahead*
    He had damaged his spine, blinded himself in one eye, broken his back leg. His face was so swollen he couldn’t eat or drink and he had severe brain damage. He could barely walk. We were forced to have him put to sleep. I have nothing against bar cages, but please, please keep an eye on any climbing hamsters.

      Thank you! Oh my gosh that is absolutely awful, how heartbreaking for you to experience that, poor little guy ;( It definitely is something to keep in mind when housing any hamster in a barred cage, there is always that risk. However, the risk is usually quite low but what you experienced is very unfortunate and I am so sorry for your loss, may he rest in peace

    Technically tubes are considered grounds space so and I have a CritterTrail hamster cage and but my hamster likes it and I was wondering if it's suitable for him which I know it isn't suitable for him but he gets over like 4 hours of playtime and he has a other another plastic bin that's 450 square inches and what it's like 500 something square inches actually and she gets to play around and out for like 4 hours so I was wondering if that's suitable for him please answer ❤️🐹

    • @peachypetparadise27
      @peachypetparadise27  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tubes aren't considered as ground space actually and critter trails alone are not suitable. However his bin cage of 450 square inches is suitable so you can house him in that and you can use the critter trail as an attachment but not the main cage. It's great that you give him 4 hours of playtime each night, I can tell you want the best for him and you are a loving owner :)

      Yes bin cages are great, they are cheap, large and relatively easy to make. Just make sure that the bin has flat sides so your hamster can’t chew out and that you make a lid out of wire mesh

    i dont have a hamster but as a fellow pet-owner that owns a very common small pet that is very often mistreated and has a lot of misinformation surrounding it (betta fish), i'm just thankful that people generally like you exist to educate the public. it's sad because these things, that hamsters do fine in those small little cages and all the other misinformation surrounding small pets, are ingrained in our minds and a lot of people had and have no idea that it's detrimental in the long run to your hamster/pet's health.
    subscribed, even tho i don't have a hamster!
    also, on the note that i am also an owner of a mistreated small pet,while im at it @general public for god's sake, bettas need at least a 2.5 gallon or else ammonia and other things will build up and kill it if you don't clean it very frequently, and it's actually easier to clean a bigger tank as you don't clean it nearly as often!! CONDITION AND CYCLE YOUR WATER! AND BETTAS ARE TROPICAL FISH!! WHY DO YOU THINK IT'LL LIVE AT FU CK ING 0 DEGREES WHEN IT'S A TROPICAL FISH!!!! BARELY ANY FISH SPECIES THRIVE IN A BOWL!! survive, yes, but NOT THRIVE!!! (only i can go on a rant about betta mistreatment on a hamster cage informational video lol)

    I use rotastak cages, and tank cages. Personally, I think that rotastak cages are suitable if you put a large amount of sets together. It gives the hamster a sense of their natural habit (tubes as the tunnels and the sections as the huts). This is just my opinion, though.

    I have 2 in critter trails and I get what you mean about them being small, that's why we got 3 each, getting them used to save money, they each get a multi level cage to climb and they love to climb around in the tubes connecting them all, that's the only way we would let them have those. My female is in her own tank though because she's an escapee, we put a bar cage in it to give her something to climb and stand on

    I used to keep a single albino dwarf hamster in the three level critter trail which was attached to one of the smaller, single level crittertrails which we used for transport, along with extra tubes and wheels attached to the exterior. She was a super docile hamster who had no problems with being handled, so I'd let her out multiple times a week under supervision to let her explore my bedroom. Was that inadequate?

    • @peachypetparadise27
      @peachypetparadise27  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the cage choice was yes as critter trails connected still aren't enough. And you should have your hamster out every night anyway but it's nice you let her explore your room, not many free range their hamsters so that's good. :)

    I just want to mention as she didn't say it, for the 20 gallon tank you need what's known as a "20 gallon long" as the "20 gallon tall" doesn't have enough space
