Bama hasn't changed their uniforms since the 60s. Look at other schools that hasn't or rarely changed their uniforms (Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, USC, Penn State, Michigan). Notice a pattern.
Just a little trivia - this was the first time Alabama ever had names on the back of the jerseys. But to your point, yes, there is a pattern. The best programs don't do chrome helmets and have more uniform combinations than they do games in a season!
I would add Texas to that list. But Oklahoma and Ohio State might need to be removed? The past few seasons they have started to wear alternate uniforms.
I think that probably came from when announcers were more used to calling games for radio. They needed to always mention the yard line, because otherwise the listener had no idea where the team was.

Full game was on here a few years ago, probably had some copyright issue. I was at the game, with my dad and two brothers, we were right behind the Bama bench and when they zeroed in on Bear Bryant, I would see all of us. My dad has long since passed and we didn't film anything growing up, so it was always a way for me to see my dad with us in is prime. Wish they would bring the full game back.

He was only there from 1977-1980, but I think that it felt longer since he was one of the first freshmen to get significant playing time after the NCAA first allowed freshmen to play varsity in 1972.

they improved a little this year.
When Baylor RB Walter Abercrombie went up to Bear Bryant to introduce himself, Bear cooly replied, “Ohhhh I know who you are.”
Baylor was completely outmatched.
