Sure was BUT unfortunately a lot of it was overblown fiction. Davis story was good enough in itself, no need to make tings up.

oh! man i"m really going to really miss the wvu-syracuse football series we had such great games and sometimes everything was on the line in the national spotlight also. like the games we played in the late 80"s in 1987 the "cuse went undefeated and beat us in the last game of the season in a heart stopping thriller to go undefeated and on to the sugar bowl. then in 1988 we beat the "cuse in the last game to go undefeated and on to the feista bowl.
...GOOD LUCK IN THE ACC SRYACUSE

Ernie Davis and Jim Brown would have been a awesome backfield. Think how NFL would have changed. Maybe the Super Bowl Trophy would be called the Blanton Collier trophy. Both Landry and Lombardi wouldn't be such coaching legends. A nightmare for a defensive coordinator to stop that backfield.

    Just a few quick comments:
    1. for those complaining of the movie jumbling things around - it was a movie. Did "Pearl Harbor" or "Titanic" accurately represent what happened? not really.
    2. The brawl really happened - you can find video on-line.
    3. this video was made in 1960, of course they didn't talk about the racism and show the brawl.
    4. Ernie Davis was the star of teh game, though other players contributed significantly. He scored 16 of Syr points and gained most yards.

Watched the movie The Express...then read his biography at wikipedia...I cried..he was a GOOD man..he died way to young..what an amazing person he was. Sometimes a person's journey on this old earth is a short time lived..but HE lived...and I admire him for the person he was becoming. Jim Brown..Ernie Davis..and Floyd Little..all their lives intertwined at one point in their life..all amazing at a game that I love.

As I recall, Cuse actually had one more touchdown. That "in-field of play fumble" actually took place AFTER the back had crossed the goal line. There were two parallel lines: the goal line, and the line in the end zone that formed one side the rectangle that outlined the name of the team (Texas or Syracuse). The ref got confused by the stupid design and which was the goal line - and ruled fumble, when the back had actually crossed the goal line before giving up the ball. So final score actually should have been something like 30-14.

No doubt about it, The Express brought me here. Those Texas players were all over on Ernie Davis and they tried to take him out but we all know he was tough, so he came back out there and finish the game hurt. If that's toughness, I don't know what is. Also, Syracuse not only won the game, but winning their only National Championship in 1959. A couple of years later, Ernie Davis became the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy, which goes to the best player in college football. Sadly, his life came to a heartbreaking end, losing his life at the age of 23 due to leukemia. Rest In Peace, Ernie Davis. His legacy will live on forever.

they do that in many sports movies...remember "remember the titans"?
t c williams had actually been integrated several years before, not the 1st year, they did beat ed henry's team , but during the regular season, that championship game was won handily, and they were ranked as one of the top teams in the nation going into the season ! they were a dominant team from start to finish, not the underdogs they were portrayed like in the movie

Man, they really took some liberties with this game in the movie. The 87-yard TD to Davis was really the first touchdown rather than in the 4th quarter. And Texas wasn't down 15-14 like in the movie. I guess they had to make it a little more exciting. Thanks for uploading!

Syracuse beat the hell of Texas, thanks to the refs the score isn't a blowout. If one watch the game in it's entirety, countless holding calls, unsportsmanlike conduct, and loads of illegal hits from Texas players. And despite this, Syracuse still won.

Pete Gogolak wouldn't kick for Cornell until 1961.

There were no post-bowl rankings released back in those days, but Syracuse would undoubtedly have been ranked #1 if there had been. They won most of the other non-poll awards given out after the polls, like the Football Writers Assn of America Nat. Championship

There definitely was a throwdown of a fight before halftime, it just got cut out of this footage. There are still pictures online of the fight and everything, but I'd like to see the vid myself if it was available anywhere... Univ. of Texas probably has it icksnayed since it's such an embarrassment for them, that AND the asswhooping they took in this game! LOL

@lildood24 I hadn't really thought about it that way . . . I tend to admire pioneering black athletes (Jackie Robinson, Jack Johnson, etc.) . . . so I guess you can say I'm for him. My comment about white's attitude about blacks in 1960 was not meant as an excuse. I was trying to point out to the doubters that the Texas players did cheap shot and insult Syracuse's black players - that's just a historical fact - and that such things were typical of white Texans in 1960.

If Jim brown says they were dirty. Then they were dirty. If Ben Schwartzwalder said they were dirty then they were dirty. They were there. I live in the south it's still racist right now I can't imagine what it was like then.

true, but they do that with every football documentary. look at Invincible with Mark Whalberg. The touchdown he scored at the end was exaggerated so much!

@uricehe4 When a movie takes events like that and embellish them, it is trying to fit all of the emotion and importance of days and weeks and years into one event. That's why it is "drama." The very best are able to do it without changing too many facts, but even they have to change some. I grew up a Cleveland Browns fan and heard about Ernie Davis from day one, even though he had died by the time I was old enough to actually be a fan in 1965. Yes, the year after their last NFL Title.

@lildood24 Yeah that shove was part of it . . . I found on video on here that showed a pretty big fight that broke out right before halftime too.

In the movie they had Syracuse #1 and Texas #2. Actually the pre-bowl polls had Syracuse #1 and Texas #4. Ole Miss was #2 and LSU #3.
