As an old SCCA Tech Inspector (among other things...) it is well known that you must intimately know the rule book for whatever class you're racing in, better than your competition, whether that's the other drivers or the tech inspector who will be examining your car. Violating a specific rule is a no-no; finding a crack between the rules that leaves an opportunity is a smart team owner/crew chief. A lot of people called Smokey Yunick a lot of nasty names because he was better at this than just about anyone in NASCAR back in the 1950/1960s. It also won him a lot of races! Good luck Paul! I was glad to see you employing your CAD engineering skills once more!! 🤣👍
Paul, before you pour your concrete floor in the new shop, maybe think about adding some "floor drains". If you have no where for them to gravity drain outside, you can run them to a "sump pump", which will pump the water outside. It is also a good idea to add "drain channels" at each over head door, which will eliminate water coming into the shop. I look forward to seeing your new shop come together. Thank You for letting us be apart of all your builds and adventures!
I"m excited to see more on the shop build. We zip tied some 1/2" oxygen barrier pex to the rebar in my shop floor before pouring a 6" thick floor; just in case I wanted to heat the floor in the future. That was 7 years ago and was one of the best decisions made in the build. Radiant heat on a budget and a whole lot of "who cares, its a barn" going on, but it works and it works well. And it all runs on firewood.
Its best not to have the pex up tight against the rebar. Over time the pex moves at a different rate than the rebar and cuts the pex creating leaks, a lot of leaks, and crazy expensive to fix. It takes 15-20 years but it WILL happen!!
Good morning in my opinion creative finessing isn't really a bad thing it comes down to knowing how to do it where it isn't really obvious and benefits you. Hunter is a very important member of the team. He is a camera man, extra help when needed and the most important in my opinion a good heckler while you guys are working.
What I loved is how nobody went for the fire extinguisher. lol Just another little fire. No problem. Showed just how chill the whole Fabrat Family is. 🌺
I’ve never been around derby cars much and know hardly anything about it but I LOVE learning all the tricks that go into making a good car. Please keep showing all the things that go into making them and explaining what you’re doing and why, it’s so interesting to see what makes the car hold up to that much abuse. Don’t give away all your secrets, but show us the hows and whys on anything you can cause it’s really interesting.
The best garage fires usually involve a derby car. We put the fuel cell in the back seat of a 66 New Yorker ran a hose to the pump and got it running. It ran well, so we started putting the rear-end and leaf springs under it. As soon as the welder started, there was an incredible fireball. We actually pushed the car out and just let the fire burn out. That's when we found out the fuel return line had been pumping fuel into the ground for a while. The shop had a gravel floor back then, so nobody noticed the fuel everywhere until the fire.
Just some kind information for your shop and your new shop in the summer. We use one of those big swamp coolers that are meant to go on a roof. Cut a hole in the side of the building and that sucker cools down almost the whole shop to 75 degrees in the summer. We added a smaller normal household size to the other end of the shop and for very little money the shop can stay at 70 degrees if you turn it on early enough
Can’t wait for the new shop to be built have you shown what it’s going to look like how many bays, what improvements, number of lifts, also what type of crane are you going to have because that’s one of the handiest tools in a shop. Congratulations🎉 🎉 you guys deserve a new larger shop where more projects can be put out in a shorter time with proper tools and facilities the struggles are less.
Going to enjoy learning the secrets of a derby car. I have never seen a small block with so much plating around it. When I built my shop I wanted to put heat in the floor but could not afford it. I still regret not doing that 35 years later.
I had a 1971 and a 1972 Olds 98. The Olds engines had the distributor in the rear of the engine like the Chevy engines. If I remember correctly, the Buick engines had distributor up front.
Actually very impressed with the tech involved in derby cars! As a long tim race car Fabby I must say you have some ingenious things going on with that car!
Spring is finally here 10:38 Michelle came out of the house LOL I seen you Michelle 😀😎 trying to hide in the background I understand I have to acclimate to the outside as well.
I forgot what that engine sounds like! Multiple cool!! Those derby cars are crazy to build. Robby showed the work they did on a derby car and it was mind boggling!! An episode of Fab Rats is always enhanced with a simple call of "FIRE!!"
The best part about derby cars was running the crap out of them for three months before the derby. Thanks god Dad had a gas combine. He thought the fuel take used to leak. Never could find the leak until he found the 5 ft hose we used to siphon with.
Morning Fab RATS Family!! Looks like you're heading for more FUN TIME in the derby arena!! (that was the start of knowing y'all) Can't wait to see the new shop going up... it will be a welcome addition for you!! Always great to see Michelle and Lolly checking to make sure you boys are doing things proper!!! Safe travels, friends❤️❤️ Stay FROSTY... Keep your powder dry and your head on a swivel... 🇺🇸🇺🇸WWG1WGA🇺🇸🇺🇸NCSWIC🇺🇸🇺🇸
THIS is what I'm talkin' about! Love the fab and love the inside look at the tech and tricks that go into a Derby car. Eagerly looking forward to the next episode.
Have you used brass welding rod to run the engine. Then run a a r[d up thru the floor to shift the tranny. Don't forget to put tractor tire weight liguid to get better traction
Can’t believe my dad and his friends used to win demo derbies with cars cobbled together with junkyard parts. My dad took pride in spending as little as possible on his cars and stomping the competition. If I remember correctly the most he paid for on a car was a driveshaft and distributor. Stealing bumpers from old cars in the river bank, laying miles of mig wire even though we were building for the no weld class😅 those were the days rest easy dad😇
It sounds like a made for TV grudge match. Build that sucker as strong as possible. No holds bared. Since it is a closed to outside contestants, there are no rules! Use a really good race quality seat, and HANS device for all the drivers. (Some of the drivers are getting too old for that kind of stuff... )
A few questions for Hunter. 1. Knowing what you know now, would you still take the job? 2. What exactly is in your job description (if any)? 3. How thick is your skin nowadays?
Very good to hear the engine still runs going to be great to have the new garage being built yes yes .That will make great derby car all the best well done guy's thank you great video
My buddy does derby, years ago I helped him, took engine and transmission from a car that sat for 2 years, lit right off , I believe he won that derby, good times
So not that I don't like seeing you light stuff on fire, but you guys need clear fire and emergency procedures pasted on the wall. What to do, where fire extinguishers are, fire blankets, etc... Stay safe!! And I can't wait to see that derby car going!
Not sure if that was brake clean or not when he was cleaning out the reservoir before welding. Be SUPER careful doing that. Brake clean and mig welding can create a toxic gas that will kill you very easily.
The milwaukee tools have alot of motor protection and human protection built into the brushless esc which makes them "seem" like they don't have power cuz they stop when binding. It's a positive and a negative. But I still love their tools.
You're a firefighter and I am a firefighter so we both know a lot of the same things. Since you are building a new building, you might want to consider a sprinkler system. In thirty years, I never saw a sprinklered building become a total loss. Cheers.
The new shop pad looks like progress looks like you will have a lot more space love the Derby car build I worked at a shop back in the 90s that one of the guys was building one just Awesome
Excellent video guys....I didn't realize the magnitude of cheating up that is done in derby cars.....most interesting !!... great shots Hunter....editing queen pro ad always !!.... thanks for sharing this with us
were you watching too many recent Ave vids - careful of those oily rags - spontaneous combustion (of ? brake cleaner) when combined with welding sparks -they are best incinerated in the wood burner, lol.. jk..
we still have old chain and go derbys, but there are pretty specific rules to prevent hardcore builders from killing the guys who show up with wet paint
Always good to see the editor in chief aka the boss in the shop, bringing some class into the hijinx. Have to admit I was excited to hear that engine fire up. Been through the EZ DUZ IT racing vids and really looking forward to seeing Paul wreaking havoc all over again.
I am curious how much reinforcement is allowed, versus what will be done. Do you stiffen the frame? It is interesting to see a sub frame around the drive train. You, Robby, Matt and Rudy will be a heal of a team. Until next year when its you, Gracie, Landon and Jace.
I always fall back to Dale Jr's definition: Innovation. It's not cheating, it's working within the rules that you're given. Innovation. 😁
He definitely learned that from his father.
Do it for Dale!🏁
Yep then it the one that cheating the most an still not winning that cry that others are cheating.
Hope you have some chemical fire extinguisher always cool watching you make it happen
It’s not cheating,it’s creative engineering.
It’s only cheating if the rules explicitly state that it is. Otherwise you playing in the grey areas.

thanks to Hunter for asking all the questions!

Buick motors had the distributor in the front. Oldsmobile motors were in the back. Great show, you are among my favorites. Thank you.
I enjoy the content and really like the idea of how many families are supported by the channel. Everybody wins situation.

Awsome fire, its crazy how used to it you get, no panic, carry the flaming pan around looking for marshmallows. Great video guy's.
You can tell Paul's definitely in his element building a derby car. Happy as can be and knows EXACTLY what he's doing. This is going to be awesome!
Paul and Michelle, I’m hoping all the runoff doesn’t cause you all too many water problems. God bless you guys.
I’ve never been around derby cars much and know hardly anything about it but I LOVE learning all the tricks that go into making a good car. Heated floor is the only way to go on the new shop. I built one and can't believe how comfortable it is in the winter. A must do.
So much humor from a unfriendly fire. Only from you guys. Thanks for giving.
You guys are the only reason I would ever get up this early on a Sunday morning! Good laugh to start the day, thanks fab rats!
You guys could make great safety video on what not to do! 😂

15:27 - I was reminded of Tom Hanks in Castaway for some reason! Keep up the great work, Paul and team.
You should put some french drains around the garage (or something) while you have it all dug up so it doesn't flood the shop every time it rains
Hunter! That dismount from the old derby car was almost good enough for the Olympic team 😅. 7.5/10 for sticking the landing 😂
Agreed. 😂 he looked “special” he said it was slippery 😂

No FIRE EXTINGUSHERS?! No body went to get one. I'm glad it was minor and Paul did not burst info flames. Where are the FIRE EXTINGUISHERS?! 😱

Motor head family at its finest! Love this channel, you all rock!
I'm glad ur doing derbys again. Favorite driver to watch is Paul
Going to enjoy learning the secrets of a derby car. I have never seen a small block with so much plating around it. When I built my shop I wanted to put heat in the floor but could not afford it. I still regret not doing that 35 years later.
I ran Southern Idaho and Northern Utah for about 6 years. Great times!
You know if you needed help Terry would come down and do it. I wish we could be there Saturday. Show them how it's done my friend
The shop addition is going to be awesome !! Keep up the great content, love watching you guys do your thing !!!
Need to show the more of the shop build too. I love that stuff. 👍
@@travisanderson4263 100% I agree !!
I agree.

🎉Thanks for the video everyone.....🎉...JJ ...
I can't wait to see the damage that gonna happen. Please have the team ready taking videos of all the action. 📷
It's amazing the work and money that goes into these cars.
Always love the derby videos. It’s awesome seeing how other people build their cars and how different it is from our east coast style
Spring is finally here 10:38 Michelle came out of the house LOL I seen you Michelle 😀😎 trying to hide in the background I understand I have to acclimate to the outside as well.

I'm glad Dar wasn't sitting there. You might have awaken him!!
An Oldsmobile V8 had the distributor in the back the same as a Chevy. Buicks had the distributor in the front
THIS is what I'm talkin' about! Love the fab and love the inside look at the tech and tricks that go into a Derby car. Eagerly looking forward to the next episode.
You guys are so popular now that I barely get to comment because there's thousands of comments sometimes. Super happy and proud of all of you.
Many thanks for showing what goes into a derby car.
It's just a little fire mom, nothing to worry about 😅, have a good week and count your blessings amen.
Have you used brass welding rod to run the engine. Then run a a r[d up thru the floor to shift the tranny. Don't forget to put tractor tire weight liguid to get better traction
Paul’s enthusiasm is almost contagious. There is a love affair going on with derby’ing.
If it's a tube frame, cut open about 4' at firewall and add reinforcement inside of frame then weld back up on both (driver and passenger side)
My first car was a '74 Cutlass. It had the distributer in the back. Thinking most Olds cars did.
Buick made some engines with front distributer.
Can’t believe my dad and his friends used to win demo derbies with cars cobbled together with junkyard parts. My dad took pride in spending as little as possible on his cars and stomping the competition. If I remember correctly the most he paid for on a car was a driveshaft and distributor. rest easy dad😇
I love watching you build stuff! You’re mind must be constantly processing what the next 5 steps are!
Awesome acceleration on the derby car around the 9:45 mark, that’s going to be a great combo
Paul, Paul, Paul, the distributor on the Olds motor was in the back. Buicks and Cadillac have them on the front.
hey Paul ever think about running the rad in the cab of the car thats the way we do it in the northeast. alot less rads cracking.
It sounds like a made for TV grudge match. Build that sucker as strong as possible. No holds bared. Since it is a closed to outside contestants, there are no rules! Use a really good race quality seat, and HANS device for all the drivers. (Some of the drivers are getting too old for that kind of stuff... )
I predict the derby will be like the wrecker games 🎉 big turnout I can’t wait to see the videos on it, and if it can be live-streamed even better 🎉🎉
That motor is amazing still and it's always crunch time .... Just built three cars for a team show in two weeks and got 3rd place
Hey Guys... thanks for digging down into the secret world of Derby Car construction. Very interesting! Good Job!
A few questions for Hunter. 1. Knowing what you know now, would you still take the job? 2. What exactly is in your job description (if any)? 3. How thick is your skin nowadays?
Shop whipping boy...every shop has one !
Shawn is fitting right in! It's good to see him loosening up in front of the camera.
My Olds 455 had the distributor in the back. I remember because changing the points was a pain. 😢
So not that I don't like seeing you light stuff on fire, but you guys need clear fire and emergency procedures pasted on the wall. What to do, where fire extinguishers are, fire blankets, etc... Stay safe!! And I can't wait to see that derby car going!

Paul everything is looking good and you're awesome at what you do Paul
Fire Fire Fire, Fire in the Main shop lift area. Excellent Fire PAUL. You forgot the hot Dogs and bunz ! Fire Number 7
Said it before, that overhead crane system is the neatest sweetest thing I've seen in a shop!
The milwaukee tools have alot of motor protection and human protection built into the brushless esc which makes them "seem" like they don't have power cuz they stop when binding. It's a positive and a negative. But I still love their tools.

11:00 hands down *THE BEST* cordless grinder is the 60v flexvolt dewalt. its the only grinder ive found comparable to a corded grinder.
The new shop pad looks like progress looks like you will have a lot more space love the Derby car build I worked at a shop back in the 90s that one of the guys was building one just Awesome
Great sounding motor
Excellent video guys....I didn't realize the magnitude of cheating up that is done in derby cars.....most interesting !!... great shots Hunter....editing queen pro ad always !!.... thanks for sharing this with us

You guys have more fun than a guy should be allowed. Even Michelle showed up for a don't burn the shop down. Ah life is good . Great video !
we still have old chain and go derbys, but there are pretty specific rules to prevent hardcore builders from killing the guys who show up with wet paint
I LOVE seeing that a new Fab Rats video has dropped!
Dam that crf looks mint! I had a a 07 crf450 years ago. but had to sell it wish I could get a newer one. There the best bikes made
We used to cut the firewall to reach the distributor to adjust timing when they got hot )
oh wow the shop extension made a bunch of progress, that was fast
I think Hunter started the fire to heat his lunch up. 😮😅😅😅😅😂😊
Always good to see the editor in chief aka the boss in the shop, bringing some class into the hijinx. Have to admit I was excited to hear that engine fire up. Been through the EZ DUZ IT racing vids and really looking forward to seeing Paul wreaking havoc all over again.

I like how at @7:14 hunter made sure and got his chebby in the shot! 😂😅
"don't set the shop on fire..."
"I can't guarantee that"
😂😂😂
No fear, just send it
Derby Car Build!!! I was waiting for something like this, this is awesome, that motor is a beast!
I wouldn't be a day in the shop if something didn't bend, break or catch fire! Great entertainment, and informative into the bargain.
And just like the wrecker games, I see that others are showing the derby before you guys. Skip by them folks and support the guys!
Definitely the bigger the vehicle the longer it should last. Great stuff.
Fire!! N the hole ! The Fab Rats Derby edition haha
The motor assembly looks tough enough, hopefully bolting it in instead of welding helps.
So happy to see your channel growing and these view numbers are excellent, congrats team!
Nice work Paul!! You guys get a lot done in a short time!! Almost like you've done this stuff before!! LOL!! Great video!!
"If ya ain't cheatin', ya ain't tryin'"...Daryl Waltrip.
Can't wait to see that demolition derby event.
Michelle's getting fancy with the editing, sweet time stamp😂
I THINK ITS THEIR NEW EDITOR THE WERE LOOKING FOR
@10:17 Oldsmobile distributors are in the back.
Many years ago my welding supply house told me not to use brake clean to clean steel before welding, because the fumes are really bad to breathe
I love that grandma is the only one who cusses.
