I’m not a Sanskrit scholar, but I’m aware of the widespread belief that the Yoga Sutras must be read through a commentary, by Vyasa or anyone building on Vyasa, or else many passages will be incomprehensible. This translation significantly weakens if not contradicts that belief. Thank you!
An understanding of Sankhaya philosophy is helpful. But reading the Bhagavad Gita which explains yoga philosophy and Sankhaya is found right there. This helps in understanding the yoga sutra s here without varying interpretations. Even the Buddha practiced Sankhaya. So early Buddhism is similar but without the Self concept.
Question to the group and the host. The 5 changing states of the mind is said to be detrimental or non detrimental to the practice of Yoga. Those changing states of mind are listed as: Right Knowledge, Error, Imagination, Sleep, and Memory. My question is how is Right Knowledge detrimental to the practice of yoga? And how is Error non detrimental to the practice of yoga? I can see how imagination, sleep and Memory can be both detrimental and non detrimental.
Thank you ! This version without commentary is perfect, and it's nice to have the purest form, without subjectives modern interpretations. Great job!
