Sri Rabindranath Tagore as well. He had rendered a self composed poem in one of the Shiva Jayanti events happened in then Bombay. In that particular poem he glorified Shivaji Maharaj so much that he meant 'When the Bengalis were asleep , the 'sun' Shivaji rised in the land of Maharashtra.' It's quite offensive to portray Gurudev Tagore as a 'blind pacifist'. He was extremely passionate towards the Sanatana Dharma and Bharatavarsh. 👍👍

So it was but natural for them to raid and loot sringeri mutt. I agree with you that peshwas after Baji Rao were not good and did not always follow ethical and moral principles. The non existence of Local Folklore and Oral Rendition Songs against Shivaji, describing any cruelty or attrocity pan India and especially in areas where Marathas fought decisive battles is itself a bare testimony that the Great Leader didn't misuse his Sword. If he were a tyrant there would have cropped up million odd tales describing the barabarity of Marathas. No king however powerful cannot hush down word of mouth among commoners regarding one's own stature. The total absence of such oral literature against campaigns of Shivaji or Marathas speaks for itself.

Yeah same, but luckily i am from assam and we have an *extra* out of the course history book called "rediscovering assam" and thats the best book i have read in my school, it has history of assam from the times fo dvapar yug krishna to the time of ahom-mughal war (we defeated those turkics 17 times) and also the war where our assamese king prithu defeated bhaktiyar khiljee, the guy who burnt nalanda, he tried to came assam but tasted dust, this unfortunately isnt in cbse books but my school ( being cbse) has made an extra book to tell us about history of assam. But although i havent learnt much about other kings in school, only in internet like maharanapratap singh, and shivaji. In school cbse books toh, we read "tipu sultan, tiger of mysore"

When Marathas invaded Bengal, it was a Mughal colony with some exceptions like Nabadweep and Vishnupur. It was called Bengal Subah since most of Bengal was under Mughal colonialism. Mughal rule in Bengal ended in 1757 by British colonialists.

As far as I remember is that Alivardi Khan k*lled his uncle Rustom Khan to usurp the throne. So Rustom's son wanted revenge so there was a civil war amongst Muslims in Bengal.
Alivardi Khan literally invited the Marathas to pillage Bengal. He literally wrote a letter to the Marathas wanting help against his relative.

According to R.C. Majumder, " The Bargis( Maratha) destroyed a crops of 10.1 lack in the financial year of 1747 to 1748"

Form 712 - 776 maitrikas dynasty (476 - 776) from 776 - 942 the chavdas dynasty (690 -942 ) from 942 - 1244 the solanki dynasty (942 - 1244) and from 1244 - 1304 vaghela dynasty (1244 - 1304) ruled Gujarat and kept itself sovereign form Muslims. Early marathas fought against mughals. later marathas under the opportunistic interloper peshwas wanted to take over the mughal system for their own benefit using hindu mantle as an excuse, similar to how congress inherited british system and feigned hindu concerns, while the real independence was fought by INA or it was simply the mobilization by INA. Invariably, seeing this game, the remnant and resurgent hindu powers in the north such as sikhs/dogras/purbias always opposed later maratha intrusions. Oh! This explains it. Virji Vora was one of the richest merchants in Surat who lent money to British empire. In fact they say British begged money from Vora continuously - before they pocketed the entire country. So I am sure there were rich predecessors of Virji Vora at Shivaji Mhj times.
Regarding Shivaji Mhj and Bengalis - I think this propaganda is much before communists - maybe the Brits started it. Reason I say is when Swami Vivekananda was an itinerant monk (before 1890s) he stays with a Bengali gentleman by name Haripada Mitra in Belgaum (in Karnataka). Haripada Mitra talks ill of Shivaji and Swami Vivekananda gives him a blistering response saying how ill informed he is about Shivaji Maharaj.
Even communist historians never said Shivaji raided Bengal. Carnatic and Bihar, orissa and Bengal were raided a hundred years after Shivaji by Maharaj Raghuji Bhosale.

Marathas raided Bengal in Peshwa era. Actually Pindaris who were irregulars under Maratha command, plundered Bengal and massacred civilians on a mass scale. This can't be denied. However, it should be noted that Maratha regular army never committed atrocities of this magnitude.

Besides, a certain amount of money was demanded from (only) wealthy merchants and when this money was paid, these merchants were left alone without any harm. Those merchants who denied to pay were punished.
There were instances when Adilshahi and Mughal forces raided Marathi territories and even killed innocent poor peasants and carried out rapes. Compared to that, Surat raid was a lot less brutal.
There were two primary objectives of this raid:
1. Collecting funds for building Swarajya (Maratha kingdom).
2. Striking fear in the heart of emperor Aurangzeb by raiding his prized possession.
Raghoji Bhosle sent Bhaskar Pundit to collect chauth from Bengal and they targeted civilians, killed many. Later Marathas after great Chatrapati Shivaji were more interested in Chauth collection. Shivaji would never have allowed it. Shivaji Maharaj is great and will remain great in our hearts.

1. It is not a communist propaganda. In 18th Century, a Bengali poet Gangaram wrote "Maharastra Puran", where he described "Bargi" invasion much before communism came.
2. During Bengal invasion Chatrapati Shivaji wasn't in power. It was done by "Pindari"s led by Bhaskar Pandit under Raghoji Bhosle.
3. They killed civilians, especially Brahmins, destroyed temples. Tinkari Ray was one of the zaminders who fought against them. After defeating independent Hindu kingdoms, they attacked Alibardi. The attacks on Hindu kingdoms were completely unnecessary.
Anyway, It was not at all Shivaji's fault. It's the mistake of Raghoji and Bhaskar Pandit.
Bengali child rhyme "Khoka ghumolo, para jurolo" will remember these atrocities.

As a Bengali, from a historical standpoint, I disagree with Abhijit on this one. When we were young our grandparents used to sing a lullaby to us "Bargi Elo Deshe, Bulbulite Dhan Kheyeche Khajna debo kishe". This perfectly summed the condition of common Bengalis under Maratha invasions. Bargi here refers to the Maratha Light Cavalry which raided West Bengal under Sri Raghuji Bhonsle between 1741 and 1751. The Marathas imposed a 1.2 million rupees tribute on Alivardi Khan the Nawab of Bengal. Guess where Alivardi got this money from- Bengali farmers, whose lands had already been torched by the "Bargis". Hence the second line "Bulbulite dhan kheyeche" (Crops are gone), "Khajna debo kishe" (How will we pay tax?). Although the Marathas supposedly attacked Bengal Subah as a repurcussion of Alivardi's attacks on Hindu temples in Bhubeshwar, they committed atrocities on Bengali farmers Hindus and Muslims alike. Both Dutch and British sources from the time corroborate each other on these atrocities. I agree with Abhijit that leaders serve a limited group of people. For the later Marathas this group was Marathi Hindus, they were no saviors of Bengali or Odiya Hindus.

Now the rise of this concept came from an anonymous song, but if you go by the words carefully you will understand how wrong inference have been drawn from it, the words goes like thess, "ছেলে ঘুমালো, পাড়া জুড়ালো
বর্গী এল দেশে
বুলবুলিতে ধান খেয়েছে
খাজনা দেব কিসে।।"
this is the first paragraph here look at the two words, first bargi, now I have a question, if it's referring to the maratha and being sung by a Bengali then why will they use a parsian word bargi, will not they use dakat, or lootera or if they wanted to mention the marathi so can use the marathi term darodekharo, why instead they use a parsian word, now the other word is khajna, it's was the practice of the time to pay khajan to the rulers and it was under mughal territory so mughal will be paid the khajan....and the later words if you go by you will understand it more clearly, there is a sentence which says we are cultivating garlic and will pay the task with that, but one should remember Marathi's generally don't consume garlic, while the Mughals were massive consumer of it. So the song clearly wants to mention the Mughals but it's been interpreted with a wrong meaning to let a fight among the Hindus themselves and they get the benefits.
Last point Gophal Bhar was a contemporary book written during that period but it has no mention of the raids of marathas but ample mention of the atrocities of the Mughals...

Actually there is incidence in Surat chapter. There was a widow of a wealthy merchant named Parekh. Shivaji Maharaj sent soldiers to there house . They had surround the house. That widow thought these men were there to loot. But she noticed much time was spent but they did nothing. So she sent her servant to enquire. When he asked the soldiers told him that they were there to protect her as in such condition some one may try to take advantage of the situation and do anything wrong.
The marathas killed 4 lakh bengalis in 10 years between 1741 and 1751. We literally have a folk lullaby in bengali villages describing how the maratha raiders used to force the people to pay tax and the poem is talking about how their crops were eaten by "bulbuli birds" so how can we pay taxes. Such was the oppression of the marathas on the bengali common people

the Sringeri math was not looted by Marathas it was looted by Pindaaris, they were mercenaries and used to fight as belligerents for Maratha Empire, and yes they were later punished by Maratha Commanders on the orders of Peshwa himself.

Actually marathas were unethical fighters. They were first Indian rulers who killed common people. Rajputs never did that. They have done that in Rajasthan, Bengal, Karnataka etc. It started happening during peshwa times. Shivaji was still ethical.
