"We Want a Better Future": Meet an Asylum Seeker Evicted from NYC Hotel, Demanding Humane Treatment

  • This week, New York City police evicted an encampment of asylum seekers outside the Watson Hotel who were protesting plans to house them in a remote, crowded and cold facility. Mayor Eric Adams suggested the protesters were "agitators," not migrants themselves. We speak to a Venezuelan asylum seeker named Ruben, who was evicted from the hotel, and Desiree Joy Frías, a community organizer with South Bronx Mutual Aid, which has been deeply involved in supporting the asylum seekers arriving in the city.

The guy is openly saying that he’s an economic migrant (and therefore here illegally), and demanding a “work permit” which presupposes a claim of political asylum. This is just insane.

Stop saying that they were evicted. Eviction is what happens to someone who is renting a place to live. These people are not renting, they are living there for absolutely free. And as such, they have absolutely no right to demand to stay there. And the fact that we are even arguing about this is outrageous.

The immigrant men that are protesting and refusing to go to the shelter should be taken back to the border and escorted across it. Also, NO IMMIGRANT should be staying at a 5star hotel when America has homeless people sleeping in the cold. The entitlement of these people is DISTURBING. They should've protested and fought for their rights in their OWN COUNTRIES!!!!!

Every one wants a better future. If it was really possible to help the poorest of the poor it’s great, but often the fierce greedy ones find a fraudulent way to get their hands on food/shelter/cash benefits intended for the poor, so governments are left scrambling to help such a great influx of people! It’s easy for anyone to come through the border claiming victim hood or being financially downtrodden, when too many people just want their money on bigger U.S. payouts/handouts to send money back to their home countries

You must either be completely uneducated or just that dense. Are you not aware how past decades US has been slowly dismantling its immigration court? There is no such thing as timely manner with a backlog of one million plus. At that waiting after you’ve paid thousands for potential approval.
For many in dangerous situations cause by US destabilization of their country, waiting for our inefficient and dismantled immigration courts to process the paper work isn’t feasible.
Maybe if you’re that concerned. Then fight to reform our government to stop destabilizing other countries for American corporate interest. Then you won’t have mass refugee migration

    • @DC-rd6oq
      @DC-rd6oq ปีที่แล้ว

@@miasparks167 I am totally aware of the backlog, hence my comment. The first thing we need to do is address the backlog. How many people of that 1 million plus backlog actually have a credible asylum claim? Less than 10%. Don't let the other 90% enter the country in the first place, kick out those who cannot immediately make a credible claim, and there is no longer a backlog. Make them fill out Form I-589 at the border and immediately remove those who don't or can't at least make a somewhat credible claim. Saying who 'want a better life', 'want to pursue your dreams" or "want to work" is not valid.
BTW I'm neither dense nor uneducated. I am also not for open borders. And I am not so naive (or in your case, stupid) that I think allowing everyone into the U.S. is the answer.

asylum is usually denied too, so the Biden Admin and these supposed "aid organizations" encouraging people to come here when they'll just be denied is irresponsible. they should instead work on reforming the immigration process so that the legal path is feasible, which is safer and provides better outcomes for everyone involved. then when people arrived, having already secured legal entry and a work permit, they can start building their lives as this man has mentioned wanting to do. I believe this aid worker actually wants these migrants to be dependent on her, otherwise she would be educating them on why they do not have work permits (which has absolutely nothing to do with Eric Adams or any other mayor).
These aid groups could be out there advocating for these people to be processed through the system in a reasonable timeframe in order to get work permits and become self-sufficient, but instead she's encouraging them to complain about the support they have been offered regarding food and housing. I'm so surprised to know that a person who doesn't know where their next meal will come would throw away food that average americans eat simply because they don't like it. I can't imagine begging a person to let me stay in his house and demand what food they would serve me. Hard to fathom what entitlement they geel they deserved.

From his OWN words, he's been receiving money (MORE than once BTW) from 2 sisters (blood relatives)who live in Chile to finance his travels. WHY not go to Chile instead then if his sister's are able to find the money to finance his travels, opportunity for work there seems a lot better than here. He'd have family members to help with finding housing and jobs, plus not having to deal with a language issue. Is he REALLY running away from legal problems in Venezuela and then trying to pretend to be seeking asylum here in the US? If so, how many others are trying the same thing?

ASYLUM SEEKERS OR THUGS??? If American homeless people were evicted from a hotel and acted up this way, they'd be removed and go to jail. The word Asylum Seeker to describe THUGS paints a very ugly picture. The law was broken the day they crossed the border illegally and continue to resist our laws. If they behave this way now, what that could be like when granted , yes granted not earned CITIZENSHIP. Are these the best?

I lived in a motel for 4 years with homeless people sleeping in cars in the parking lot with kids in Colorado in the winter. All I can say is treat them the same. Let them sleep on the street. Nothing is free in America. English is a job requirement in America. Might want to learn english before applying for a job. They want to skip the education and go straight to work. They're unskilled labor. They can't even work in a drive thru restaurant and speak english to take orders in english. Useless to our society unless they're organ donors.

and it has been very irresponsible of the Biden Admin to encourage people to come here knowing full well they'll be denied asylum, as most people are who apply. My ex-husband sought asylum from his third-world African country that had been taken over in a coup by a dictator who was killing people (political persecution) and his asylum was denied.
So these aid workers who act like they want to help but in the end anything these folks pay to immigration lawyers to seek asylum they will probably lose. The solution we need is to reform our immigration policies so that these people can be vetted and provided with work permits.

A consequence of imperialism is economic refugees coming to the imperial core. We need our government to stop meddling.

    "We want a better future."
So did my Sicilian Great-Grandparents. But they had to come in legally through Ellis Island. They had physicals to make sure they weren't bringing in any disease. They had papers from the US Embassy and they had letters from family already in the US certifying that they would support them so they wouldn't be a financial burden to the American taxpayers.
My grandfather was a baby when they came. When my Great Grand-father died in 1920 Great -Grandmother went to work full time. My Grandfather had just gotten out of the Army and was working for a trolley car company as a conductor.
What makes these people think they can just sneak into our country and take what citizens have worked for. A sense of entitlement. It has become a cultural norm today even with the younger members of our own society. When a Black leader says, "They are eating off of our plates" he displays the same sense of entitlement. How dare these people come here thinking they can take the freebies we begged so hard for. Between all these people and their sense of entitlement this country cannot last much longer.
