Brilliant, there’s a book called “ Rocky Marciano’s Boys Book of Boxing” which doesn’t sound good but the second half of the book is all Charlie Goldman’s training and diet tips which is very interesting as he mentions using weights but not strenuous which surprised me that he’d use them at all. Great channel I look forward to every episode you do now. Thanks!

He was never tested against genuine topnotch 200+lbs Heavyweights let alone authentic topnotch 224+lbs Super Heavyweights. But he went 49-0, yes he did, against who? Middleweights and light heavyweights masquerading as Heavyweights. Walcott was at least 40, Moore was at least 42, Charles factually had ALS and Louis was washed. *Rocky never fought an all-time great in his prime.* Heck, in my opinion today's light heavyweight phenom Artur Beterbiev would annihilate Marciano! Rocky was flat-footed wide open and never used the jab. *Rocky's era was unquestionably beyond doubt* *the absolute worst Heavyweight division in boxing history!*
Both Ted Lowry and Roland LaStarza went to their graves saying they beat overrated Rocco Francis Marchegiano first fight, and all the newspaper reporters and fans ringside agreed. The Great authentic Heavyweight Larry Holmes referred to little Rocco padding his record by fighting his brother Peter Marchegiano on at least 3 or 4 occasions so as to boost his record, his brother fought under alias names ..this has also been mentioned in various books. Marchegiano's 49-0 record is FLAWED. Obviously size is a massive factor, little white Marciano never fought anyone as big as Fury Lewis Bowe Ibeabuchi Vitali Wlad Holmes Tyson Liston Cleveland Foreman Witherspoon Thomas Weaver Holyfield Usyk Cooney Tua Morrison Golota Dokes Mercer Povetkin Byrd Haye Bruno Rahman Whyte Ruiz etcetera. Rocky struggled with small Ezzard Charles and Walcott, who were both slick movers with solid defense, much like Fury. You white Marciano fan boys make me laugh. Rocky was too small for dozens of proven authentic Super Heavyweights. Fury jabs him into oblivion. Heck, Fury can land 4 or 5 jabs a round and win the round. And how does Rocky reach Fury with the extreme height-reach difference, and Fury's foot speed? We will never see 185 lb champions Marciano, Charles, and Patterson again. I'm sure that light heavyweight era during the 1950s following world war II was neat to watch 175 lb heavyweights fighting, but fantasyland had to end. Authentic (not fraudulent) Heavyweights started taking over with the arrival of Lewis and Bowe during the 90s. All u white Marchegiano lovers 💕 adore Rocco's high work-rate, but 6'2" 240 lb Ibeabuchi threw more punches than tiny penguin 🐧 arms Marchegiano could have imagined. Little Rocco would have been an absolute embarrassment fightin proven authentic Super Heavyweights.
Superb documentary. Love the historic photos. It took 4 1/2 years to get Rocky to peak form, twice as long as any other fighter. Only Charlie Goldman could have patiently brought Rocky along for so long.
No better boxing history channel before or since… And so many fights shown in their entirety… true documentaries , entertainment is a secondary feature..
184 lb Rocky had the shortest (67") reach in Heavyweight boxing history. According to multiple sources (one being Rocky's biographer John Cameron) Rocky was actually 5' 9". *Don't believe for a second Rocky was 5' 10" because Joe Louis was at least 5 inches taller! Joe was only 6′ 1 ½″ yet dwarfs Rocky and everyone can clearly see that with their own eyes!* Rocky's bone structure was simply too short to assimilate effectively into today's Super Heavyweight division.
The more i investigate each one of white hype Rocky's opponents the more i realize just how undeniably pathetic and controlled by the Mafia his 49-0 actually was. A couple days before D-Day little white Rocky committed assault and robbery. He was found unfit for duty and served 18 months in the stockade. While everyone went off to fight and die in battle Rocky stayed in bed (premeditated). After retiring he abandoned his family to sleep with thousands then left them penniless. Psychotic. Needed Help. Fury Ibeabuchi Lewis Bowe Vitali Holmes Wladimir Foreman Liston Tyson Witherspoon Thomas Weaver Holyfield Usyk Cooney Tua Morrison Golota Dokes Mercer Povetkin Byrd Haye Bruno Rahman Whyte Ruiz Cleveland Williams etc. are all faster than slow-little Rocky despite being so much Bigger. Marciano fans know that Rocky's not winning any of these fights but will never admit it. Stop living in denial. Rocky is so overrated and definitely doesn't deserve to be ranked within the top 10. Maybe 28th place in top 30. Roids ain't gonna make little white Rocky's penguin 🐧 alligator 🐊 dwarfism arms grow longer? Besides, if ya put 25 lbs on Rocky he would have moved slower than molasses, and he'd still need the use of a stepladder inorder to reach King Fury. Little white Rocky was slow as molasses. They wouldn't stand a chance against modern era Heavyweights. And the Peds have nothing to do with anything. It's the multi mega million dollar purses that's pulling in more authentic Super Heavyweights from the football fields and basketball courts. You white Marciano lovers 💕 adore little Rocky's high-work-rate, but 6'2" 237 lb Ike "The President" Ibeabuchi threw a record breaking 975 punches vs David Tua in their 12 round fight, more than tiny penguin🐧arms was capable of. Authentic Heavyweight Ibeabuchi would've manhandled small Rocco and smashed him like a 🍇 grape.
The less said about 254 lb Humphrey Jackson the better. He only had 7 fights as a pro and had found a way to be KO'd by a guy with 1 fight. So this was little white Rocky's so called authentic Heavyweight opponent he faced? Another Typical Undercard C-Level Factually Marciano would bust a payphone clean off the wall just to retrieve his 10 cents even though he had 30K in his pocket. He was half a bubble off plumb. It's in his biographies. My nephew Billy has explained how good you are and why. Apparently there's a guy by the name of Gregory Rochette that has been harassing people for 10 years. Billy said, "you contain him and put him in his place." I wish you good health and happiness. Carry on. So Marciano threw 100 punches in a round? Lol give me a break. Number one Marciano only weighed 185. So even if he threw 100 punches in a round what would that prove? Why compare a light heavyweight punch numbers to a true-Heavyweight. Only sik-minded fanboys would even try to compare. So Fury, Lewis, Vitali, and Foreman all would have lost if they fought the hyped-up tomato cans little white Marciano fought? Give me a break. LaStarza, Savold, Cockell, and Matthews would be humiliated in the real Heavyweight world. If 42 year old light heavyweight Moore and 38 year old cruiserweight Walcott could drop little white Rocky then the Tyson's, Foreman's, Klitschko's and Ibeabuchi's of the world woulda kilt him. How can a 185 pound man even be considered an ATG Super Heavyweight when he was barely cruiserweight? Even if little white Marciano could have fought a prime Moore and a prime Charles he'd still be fightin light heavyweights who were both knocked out by middleweights Marshall and Booker. And even you wanna pretend they were in their primes the point is little white Marciano still struggled with light heavyweights. One would think since little white Marciano was only 185 that he would at least have faster hands than the true Heavyweights right? But Maricano had the slowest hands I've ever seen on a white boy. little white Marciano could train 1000 years but prime Ali would still crush him. Since Marciano struggled with light heavyweight Charles who was a good boxer, but was smaller weaker and slower than Ali, what makes you think he'd do better against Ali? Could you imagine 41 year old light heavyweight Archie Moore busting up King Fury and Big George Foreman or any of the great Super Heavyweights? Yet little white Marciano had all he could handle and was floored with one glancing shot from the light heavyweight grandfather.
Rocky's commentary straight to the point and very practical, absolute Legend and it's not surprising he was a rolemodel for Iron Mike and an inspiration for Mikes devastating power-based style
Marciano said his best weight he ever fought at was, "186lbs." Tyson was 220lbs at his fastest & best. About 235lbs at his heaviest. Rocky didn't have the speed or footwork to keep Tyson away or the skill or technique to keep him off. And saying that Rocky was tough… well,, tough can get you killed in the ring against a super power puncher with superior skills. This fight wouldn't last 2 rounds with a prime Tyson. And a non-prime Tyson would still be heavier and stronger. Rocky never faced anyone of merit who was near their prime. You wouldn't want Tyson to be your first. Bigger, faster, stronger. With malicious intent. No way Rocky would beat a prime Iron Mike. *178 to 186 lb light heavy aka tiny cruiser with tiny 67" flyweight reach Rocky Marciano's resume:* Lee Epperson career record 0 wins 1 loss *F-LEVEL* Jimmy Weeks career record 0 wins 1 loss *F-LEVEL* Gilbert Cardone career record 0 wins 3 losses *F-LEVEL* John Edwards career record 1 win 2 losses *F-LEVEL* Bill Hardeman career record 1 win 6 losses *F-LEVEL* Humphrey Jackson career record 4 wins 2 losses *F-LEVEL* Harry Haft career record 12 wins 8 losses *F-LEVEL* James Connolly career record 12 wins 9 losses *F-LEVEL* Harry Bilazarian career record 15 wins 12 losses *F-LEVEL* Bob Jefferson career record 3 wins 10 losses *F-LEVEL* Harold Mitchell career record 4 wins 17 losses *F-LEVEL* Gilley Ferron career record 4 wins 13 losses *F-LEVEL* Artie Donato career record 7 wins 13 losses *F-LEVEL* Johnny Pretzie career record 10 wins 13 losses *F-LEVEL* Don Mogard career record 20 wins 16 losses *F-LEVEL* Pete Louthis career record 32 wins 14 losses *D-LEVEL* Tommy DiGiorgio career record 9 wins 15 losses *F-LEVEL* Kenne Simmons career record 9 wins 22 losses *F-LEVEL* Art Henri career record 18 wins 29 losses *F-LEVEL* Jimmy Walls career record 20 wins 41 losses *F-LEVEL* Ted Lowry career record 71 wins 68 losses *F-LEVEL* Ted Lowry (twice) 71 wins 68 losses *F-LEVEL* Gino Buonvino career record 24 wins 15 losses *F-LEVEL* Gino Buonvino (twice) 24 wins 15 losses *F-LEVEL* Joe Dominic career record 18 wins 12 losses *F-LEVEL* Eldridge Eatman career record 22 wins 21 losses *F-LEVEL* Willis Applegate career record 12 wins 16 losses *F-LEVEL* Lee Savold career record 104 wins 45 losses *D-LEVEL* Phil Muscato career record 56 wins 23 losses *D-LEVEL* Bill Wilson career record 56 wins 27 losses *D-LEVEL* Johnny Shkor career record 31 wins 19 losses *D-LEVEL* Fred Beshore career record 35 wins 17 losses *D-LEVEL* Jimmy Evans 18 wins 8 losses looks okay until you see *he fought 10 opponents with 10 fights or less.* Eddie Ross 19 wins 5 losses looks okay until you see *he fought 10 debuting amateurs and 7 other opponents with 10 fights or less.* Bob Quinn 20 wins 4 losses looks okay until you see *he fought 13 opponents with 10 fights or less.* Bernie Reynolds 53 wins 13 losses looks okay until you see *he fought 30 opponents with 15 fights or less.* Pat Richards 24 wins 9 losses looks okay until you see *he fought 20 opponents with 10 fights or less.* Carmine Vingo 16 wins 2 losses looks good until you see *ALL 16 wins came against F-LEVEL opponents.* Don Cockell 66 wins 14 losses looks okay until you see the majority of his career was at middleweight and light heavyweight. *By the time he faced Marciano he was suffering from severe glandular disorders that wreaked havoc with his physique. The knowledgeable Trainer Don Turner ,who trained Klitchkos and was around with Rocky ,testifies to the fitness and punch power of Marciano.Lots of great trainers in the old days, and boxers who didn’t worry about going undefeated againts sub par opponents, but boxed each other.Great book about this is “The arc of boxing”by Mike Silver. My favourite is the great and mistreated Sonny Liston who was mixed up with the mob.Sonny had it all but treated terribly.Cheers.
Don Turner said, *"Marciano was the hardest puncher i ever seen."* Oh really, when was Don ever hit by Marciano? Ali said Shavers was the hardest puncher. Foreman said Lyle was the hardest puncher. Archie Moore rated Sheppard and Durelle as the hardest punchers. Emanuel Steward rated Lewis and Wladimir as the hardest punchers. Zhang fans, Joshua fans, Parker fans, Ali fans, Foreman fans, Holmes fans, Lennox fans, Vitali fans, Bowe fans and Ibeabuchi fans NEVER EVER discuss Don Turner, only Rocky fanboys discuss Don's opinionated speculations and believe it as the gospel truth. Hey everyone, Don Turner said little Rocky was the hardest puncher so it must be true hahaha. Besides 84 year old Don Turner never saw Rocky fight in person anyhow. Marciano had his last fight in New York 1955. Turner was born in 1939 and raised in Cincinnati. Don was only 15 years old. He had no money and was over 600 miles away. *His opinions are based on hearsay and film, in other words the same as ours!!!* Don said, "I have no idea what my father did. We were on welfare and lived in the Cincinnati projects four blocks from Ezzard Charles." -- A Beautiful Sickness: Reflections on the Sweet Science, by Thomas Hauser, 2001- page's 72 & 74. If 86 year old Turner thought so highly of little Rocky why didn't he look for another power-punching midget to rule the Heavies? Instead he chose to train 6' 7" 250 lb Michael Grant who had an incredible 86" reach!!! Think, people. Think.
Great white hope Marciano battered Don Cockell, another light heavyweight masquerading as a Heavyweight. Rock was the biggest phony ever, how in the hell could boxing allow such deceit, they must legitimize his legacy so they brought out of retirement an OLD, RETIRED, AND COMPLETELY BROKE, JOE LOUIS, who was like fodder fed to a pitbull, kinda like when they fed Larry Holmes to an angry Mike Tyson, or allowed Ali to be served up to Holmes. The great white hope Marciano battered Don Cockell, another light heavyweight masquerading as a Heavyweight. Rock was the biggest phony ever, how in the hell could boxing allow such deceit, they must legitimize his legacy so they brought out of retirement an OLD, RETIRED, AND COMPLETELY BROKE, JOE LOUIS The great white hope Marciano battered Don Cockell, another light heavyweight masquerading as a Heavyweight. Rock was the biggest phony ever, how in the hell could boxing allow such deceit, they must legitimize his legacy so they brought out of retirement an OLD Southpaw 200 lb Cruiserweight Usyk is actually bigger than Ali. Joshua came in at 240 lbs, only an 18 lb weight advantage over Usyk 222 lbs 6'3.2" height 78.2" reach. Holyfield 218 lbs 6'2.5" height 78" reach. Michael Spinks 208 lbs 6' 2.5" height 76" reach. Ali 215 lbs 6'2.5" (passport) height 78" reach. And of course we mustn't forget 185 lb 5'10" little white Rocky with his famously shortest "ever" 67" inch bantamweight T-rex alligator arm reach. Maybe little white Rocky could have beaten that circus clown Jess Willard who was paraded around for 4 years without a single fight. Or maybe he could have even beat that other circus clown Primo Carnera who was daily alcoholic (like Andre the Giant) and 100% mafioso controlled. The ‘ambling alp’ was an awful boxer with gigantism or acromegaly (like Andre the Giant). He was promoted as a monster because of his size, but he was really clumsy and couldn`t punch with his full weight, he was completely exposed by Joe Louis who easily battered Primo into submission. Y'all white Marciano lovers fail to ever mention Marciano's Forced retirement. Why? Because Marciano couldn't take the pain anymore from two confirmed nose surgeries, hand surgery, hundreds of stitches, chronic back pain and constant migraines cause his head was used as a Pinata constantly gettin smacked around,, here,, you hit me five times,, and I'll hit you back one time,, Duh. And all that talk about retiring for his family nonsense was simply a bull•••• publicity stunt because he immediately abandoned his family and left them penniless when he perished. Gypsy King Fury would keep little white Rocky at arm's length and force him back whenever he felt crowded. He'd jab, turn and bewilder him for as long as wanted, and if Fury felt so inclined, he'd walk him down Kronk style and smash out a stoppage. And none of this, "if he can't reach his head he'll go to the body", either. That's just bull****. Fury's lead would keep Marciano too far away as is. He ain't getting the opportunities to impose his workrate and definitely doesn't hit hard enough to stop him. Fury jabs him into oblivion. Heck, Fury can land 4 or 5 jabs a round and win the round. King Fury wins. Anyway he chooses. You white people should know the truth about Rocky, he was homosexual. Sorry if that hurts, but it shouldn't. He had to stay in the closet, it was just the way of the times. Today people like Rocky and me don't have to be embarrassed or feel ashamed. When I came out it was like taking a huge weight off of my shoulders. But don't wait like I did, I have a wife and kid that I would never had if I had not succumbed to the pressure of trying to act normal. I love Margot, but I'm not in love with her, and she understands, we stay together for our daughter. All three of us share the much of the same clothes, make-up, and interests. We're a pretty happy family.
Rocky fan-atic's describes him as being so fierce that he basically killed all 49 of his opponents in the ring. "Rocky almost killed Carmine Vingo," well Mancini 'killed' Kim, but nobody constantly brags about that like Rocky lovers do with Vingo. Y'all have these Marciano vids so saturated with ur exaggerated hyperbolic comments about Rocky's power and those 13 forced retirements, that it's laughable.
I grew up and boxed in brockton Massachusetts and was friends with a few relatives of rocky Marciano in the late 70s and early 80s the neighborhood I grew up in was the toughest in america Marciano was a God and we all aspired to be rocky
How could the neighborhood that you grew up in have been the toughest, when the neighborhood that I grew up in and thousands of other neighborhoods were the toughest?
When I was a kid and boxing in a small gym in Ireland, nearly everything we did, training wise, was because Marciano once did it. My coach must have read a book once (who knew?) and internalized all of Goldman's methods and trained a generation of kids on them.

Little Rocco would have been an absolute embarrassment fightin proven authentic Super Heavyweights. If racial bigotry was not the order of the day. If white privilege was not the priority, if Rocky Marciano, did not have the complexion for the connection, especially given the fact he never fought ONE SINGLE Black fighter in his Prime, Rocky Marciano WOULD NOT have been heavyweight champion. And consider this: Deontay Wilder, with a 93% KO Record, is doing WAAAAY BETTER as a heavyweight, than Marciano in his day could ever hope to do. AND YET, the racist, most white people call him “a bum.” Imagine that! Rocky Marciano was a mediocre fight knocking out cherry picked mediocre bums to pad his record and satisfy the wishes of white supremacy. Since his retirement 62 years ago, NOT ONE SINGLE white American has won the heavy title...NONE!!! Gee, I wonder why????!
This is golden content!! I Give you a standing ovation 👏 I had nightmares of marcianos nose after look at his cut an reading a book as a kid 😅 this men polished a real champion
Ali put little Marciano in the hospital for an entire week after their ridiculous choreographed ballet sparing match. *"Rocky entered the hospital for dehydration, torn bicep and exhaustion."* - Peter Marciano .... I've seen a lot of Getty and Fight City images and Rocky looked absolutely terrible. He was only 45 years old, wearing a wig, had zero muscle tone and fat was hanging everywhere. That's not all. U could clearly see Ali was at least 6" taller! Don't believe for a second that Ali and Marciano were friends. Once Ali found out who won he yelled and screamed and immediately took everyone to court who created the charade of fantasy matchups.

Great video on Charley Goldman. I have been doing research on corner men for the past 40 years since I started in broadcasting, and was fortunate enough to have been introduced to Whitey Bimstein when I was very young when he worked with George Chuvalo. I was only 7 at the time, and didn't realize the gravity of that meeting at that age. I would later meet such legends as Ray Arcel, Freddie Brown, and would spar at the gym at time in Toronto when George Chuvalo's trainer Teddy McWhorter would sometime be there. Keep up the great work, as I really enjoy your channel.
@@RichtheFightHistorian Trainers like Ray Arcel, Charley Goldman, Whitey Bimstein and Mannie Seamon also trained some top Canadian fighters during their careers, and guided a few of them to the title as well.
Thanks Rich. Charley was a real teacher For those interested a book published in 1991 written by Ronald Fried , Corner Men, Boxings Greatest Trainers. This book is a gem. He was inspired to write the book while working on the Dick Cavet talk show. Twice Dick Cavet had Ray Arcel as his guest. Ray told great stories. I think excerpts are on TH-cam. The book tells of the great trainers and a long chapter on Stillmans Gym. I bet Amazon or other used book sellers have it. It’s a gem for anyone interested in the time when boxing was an important sport.
You never cease to amaze me!! I thought I’d seen every minute of Marciano footage, but that Mathew’s fight, I’ve only ever seen the KO!! Keep up the great work!!❤
By far the best boxing history channel out there to date, Rich you are a legend yourself..As for this documentary, I didn’t know Charley Goldman trained so many other fighters after Marciano. So interesting his view about cauflower ears and the toughness of the boxers when in his own boxing career. To me he was arguably the best trainer ever, transformed Marciano into a unbeatable great, a masterpiece of coaching. Many thanks Rich.🥊
It was rumored monsel solution was used by freddie brown during the charles fight. Brown never admitted it but the rumors were flying. It was actually brought up and announced banned by chief inspector Ritchie from california boxing commision for the Don Cockell fight which was Rockys next fight after charles. So i believe monsel solution was used. This is also mentioned and documented in newspapers (about Ritchies concern about monsel solution before the cockell bout).
Rich, you've done it again. Great expose'. So grateful for all of your work Rich. Thank you. Btw, I worked out of Red Hook Brooklyn during the 1990's for the Dept. Of Sanitation. Tough Neighborhood, yet somewhat gentrified. Carroll Gardens is connected to Red Hook, my favorite neighborhood in Brooklyn.
AWESOME Rich!! Now if by some weird chance you could tell me who taught legendary swordsman Richerd the Lionhearts his battle skill..... Lolz Seriously I've tried to find that information for years.
Great job on Rocky Marciano's trainer Charley Goldman. One factcheck there, you put the date of the fight between Marciano and Harry "Kid" Matthews took place in September 28, 1952, which was false because it took place 2 months earlier in July 28, 1952 because in 2 months later, Marciano would win the World Heavyweight Title by knocking out Jersey Joe Walcott in 13 rounds. Anyways, keep it up.
I have a boxing game its an old one i think fight night champions something like that, I put rocky against sonny Liston and I beat sonny using the rocky computer character lol I enjoy playing that it went 9 rounds, there's alot more of the greats to choose from, one for the dads or any boxing fan , good one this Richie mate 👍
Some of the lads at work got me onto the game it's from Xbox 360 but you can play it on the newer one mine is like a cube black box Xbox X? I think it's called that we had a go after work yesterday if I get knocked down twice I can get him back up but 3 times I can't do it lol my hands won't let me 😂 they can do it but not me there's like a gauge you need to keep it in the middle and then push up to make it stand up again and your looking directly at the ref counting, pretty damn good I thought good laugh
Todays guys are to big.... The Rock would fight at 180lbs and be upto 200+ Inbetween fights... He would be LHW / Cruiserweight today... I think at heavyweight he would get blown out... At Cruiserweight i think he would do perfect
@@OldSchoolStrength Yes: @ [say] 196 pounds [= fourteen stones in old British weights & measures] I suspect he would have been-subject to my reservations as to facial cuts- pretty damn good [to put it mildly my friend ! ].
Not well, with modern weight cutting and conditioning he would be a middleweight or light heavyweight. Against giants like fury or Joshua he would get outsized and overpowered especially without the advantage of the last 3 out of 15 rounds. Could see him competing with smaller guys like holy field or maybe even Wilder though.
@@zeku45 Interesting, BUT for Rocky to go from his heavyweight 187 pounds or so to middleweight maximum of 165 pounds would drain him of energy and result in a pale shadow of his destructive best. Anyhow amigo, I may well be wrong...and it is all hypothetical. Best etc.
@@BruceJackson-lx2dw I agree he would be drained but there's guys like canelo that drained themselves of almost 30 lbs at points so I think Rocky would be okay, especially at 168. I think he does well at 175 and him vs beterbiev would be a war for the ages.
"A visual examination of Marciano's defense could be deceiving. Boxing master, Archie Moore noted that his study of Marciano on film led him to believe that he would be vulnerable to a left hook. When the fight began, Archie learned that, due to the angle of Marciano's defensive crouch, he could hit Marciano with a hook only if he placed himself in position to be hit by Marciano. Undisputedly, Marciano possessed assets that enabled him to become champion. But it is universally acknowledged that Goldman did a masterful job in bringing out these assets to Marciano's greatest advantage, and refining his style to make the fighter the best he could be."

49 wins 20 losses cruiser Journeyman Joe Walcott reminds me of Leon Spinks, right time right place. Walcott's division was so weak that he was awarded a ridiculous (6) attempts at the title and only won (1) of those attempts bcz light heavy Charles had ALS. Worst subpar Heavyweight division in boxing history.
Sonny had an-albatross 84 inch reach. Little white Rocky had a-stubby 67 inch reach. A 17 inch reach advantage is a tall order to overcome, but when the man with the reach advantage is the most fearsome puncher in history it’s insurmountable. Marciano’s style was tailor made for Liston. Rocky would get knocked into tomorrow before he could get close enough to land any damaging shots of his own. Liston’s power and reach would have been too much for the plodding face first style of Marciano. Fair play to that. Yet they were the best around at that time and he waded thru severe beatdowns by Charles and Walcott before stopping both of them. Rocky was light hw himself so no advantage there.

Hey Rich, I have a question. When I was a kid in New York, offender family was this guy we used to call uncle Freddie. He claim to be Freddie red Cochran, the lightweight champ of the world. The guy who fucked Graziano twice, I do believe he was a boxer, but I don’t think, he was the same guy. Do you have any research on Freddy red Cochran? He’s been a long sentence past, but this question always comes to my mind. Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way your channel is awesome. I love what you do. Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words on the channel, Brian. Ah, there's no way I'd be able to know if it was the same Cochrane. There are occasions where marginal fighters are impersonated. The real Red Cochrane died in 1993 if that is any help. He ran a bar in New Jersey until 1978.

This! Very refreshing these days.
Thanks!
Thanks Chris. I saw that book mentioned in my research and have to see if it is available somewhere.

*Moore - 175 light heavyweight champion from 1952 to 1962*
Rocky fans always knew his post war drained era had an expiration date and that time has arrived. He was never tested against genuine topnotch 200+lbs Heavyweights let alone authentic topnotch 224+lbs Super Heavyweights.
But he went 49-0, yes he did, against who?
Middleweights and light heavyweights
masquerading as Heavyweights.
Walcott was at least 40,
Moore was at least 42,
Charles factually had ALS and Louis was washed.
*Rocky never fought an all-time great in his prime.*
Heck, in my opinion today's light heavyweight phenom Artur Beterbiev would annihilate Marciano! Rocky was flat-footed wide open and never used the jab.
*Rocky's era was unquestionably beyond doubt*
*the absolute worst Heavyweight division in boxing history!*

Gotta love Marciano's style, hardly a jab thrown but many vicious hooks
Another Typical Undercard C-Level
Factually Marciano would bust a payphone clean off the wall just to retrieve his 10 cents even though he had 30K in his pocket.

Think.

Southpaw 200 lb Cruiserweight Usyk is actually bigger than Ali. Joshua came in at 240 lbs, only an 18 lb weight advantage over Usyk 222 lbs 6'3.2" height 78.2" reach. Holyfield 218 lbs 6'2.5" height 78" reach. Michael Spinks 208 lbs 6' 2.5" height 76" reach. Ali 215 lbs 6'2.5" (passport) height 78" reach.

Excellent documentary. You did Charlie Goldman justice with a biography of this great boxing trainer. No wonder why Rocky became a great boxer.
Thank you, Michael.
Wish I could have met Charlie, & Rocky as well!
Thank's for Introducing Charlie, such a great man!

Great Bios on Trainers-- Please do Gil Clancy one day-- What a Career..
Ah, Sanchez was too polished for Limon but it would be interesting.
Fascinating story , well done Rich.
Thanks, Paul.
Mickey goldmill in real life.
Archie Moore said, *"Rocky Marciano was about 15 years younger than I was"* --@ Archie Moore Talks 2007TBears
Archie Moore said, *"I was in my 40's vs. Floyd Patterson."* --@ Rare Archie Moore Interview
The host asks Archie Moore, (@ 6:35) "why does your mother say your one age and you say another?" Archie replies, *"I don't deny anything"* .. *"I never deny what my mother quotes"* .. *"I know my age"* .. *"and I've befuddled a lot of people who are requiring about my age constantly"* .. *"and that keeps me in the news."* --@ Day and Night: Archie Moore, boxer
*(Light heavyweight champion {10 years} Archie Moore was easily in his 40's vs. Marciano and that is no longer debatable!!!)*
Thanks, Greg. Wow, you met some legends there.
@@RichtheFightHistorian Trainers like Ray Arcel, Charley Goldman, Whitey Bimstein and Mannie Seamon also trained some top Canadian fighters during their careers, and guided a few of them to the title as well.

Rich,….Wow, …that was an interesting video! Really enjoyed! Keep them coming! Thanks!
Thanks, Barry. Will do.
Thank you for highlighting such a legendary trainer that barely gets mentioned with other great trainers. Phenomenal video!
Great video Rich. Always nice to see the life of the trainer behind the boxers. Thanks for sharing!
Sure thing, oncall21.
Thank you great
Another winner! Best boxing videos.
Thanks, Jake.
Thanks Rich. Charley was a real teacher
For those interested a book published in 1991 written by Ronald Fried , Corner Men, Boxings Greatest Trainers.
Thanks, KidGavilan. That is a good book, I have an old library version.
Another brilliant video, thanks so much!
Sure thing, Toffee Dan.
Thank You, Rich !!! ❤
My pleasure, Joe.
You never cease to amaze me!! I thought I’d seen every minute of Marciano footage, but that Mathew’s fight, I’ve only ever seen the KO!! Keep up the great work!!❤
Thank you, Anthony.
Goldman was a boxing genius.
Nice tribute, thank you
My pleasure, Richard.
Charley Goldman was a legendary genius
By far the best boxing history channel out there to date, Rich you are a legend yourself..As for this documentary, I didn’t know Charley Goldman trained so many other fighters after Marciano. So interesting his view about cauflower ears and the toughness of the boxers when in his own boxing career. To me he was arguably the best trainer ever, transformed Marciano into a unbeatable great, a masterpiece of coaching. Many thanks Rich.🥊
Hey thanks, Brett. yes, he trained quite a few fighters after Rock...I thought Calhoun was the most noteworthy, he was a real winger under Goldman.
awesome video man! first video I've seen of this channel. I'm subscribing immediately! Keep up the good work!
Thank you, Joey. Welcome to the channel.
Thank you rich for another gem. This has to be one of your top ten videos.
Thanks
Another banger. Thanks!
My pleasure, Chris.
Wow one hell of a guy .glad to to hear this story
What can I say, Rich? Another great video! Your channel is definitely one of my faves! Thanks!
I appreciate the support, Ruben, thank you.

So well done each story. Look forward to the next. Whose music is in the beginning? beautiful

Damn! No KO’s!! Wake em’ up and get back in there. They were a totally different bred of men back then.
( And still undefeated Rich the fight historian ) another exceptional job 🥊
Hey thanks, Brandon.
Good editing
Thanks, Notinthegame.
He had lots of "nieces" but when he died he was alone in a robe Rock had given him
Why can"t we have announcers like they had? I get so tired of the non stop talking.
Thanks, Bookah.
@@RichtheFightHistorian it's a laugh video was a reminder great as always brother
He put him through the Shaolin 36 chambers
Never heard of this trainer
Ezzard almost looked like he was carrying Marciano in some of the footage from the 2nd fight...either that or Ezzard was taking a round or two off.
How would Rocky [RIP] manage against our modern heavyweight "giants" of [say] 240 pounds plus ? Also, add Rocky's tendency to cut into the equation.
❤❤❤

He also fought a total of 16 bouts that boxers were rated in the top 10 at one time or another in his 49 bouts. That's a percentage of only 32.653%. (Of those 11 times not one opponent weighed over 200 lbs except for ring-worn and washed Joe Louis).

Moncells solution is what they used in Marciano vs ezzard Charles I believe it was . Rocky had a huge l shape cut on the nose
Marciano defended against over the hill ex-champs for bigger purses and light heavyweights
Fair play to that. Yet they were the best around at that time and he waded thru severe beatdowns by Charles and Walcott before stopping both of them. Rocky was light hw himself so no advantage there.
Facts , tend to agree with both of you .
Marciano was around 185lbs give or take a few pounds
@@geraldfriend256 there was a late 40's Chicago contender, Joe Bronski who was a lot like Marciano....not sure about what happened to him, but I've seen some footage.....he was TOUGH....him and Marciano would've made a great fight
U forget that rock started training at 23 and went pro at 25. Tf use is being younger without the experience. Had he been training as early as his opponents than it would be a different story. But y'all always leave that out
@@Dempsey1873 Marciano was at the tail end of the smaller heavyweights who barely made it to the 200 lb. limit.....guys like Liston and Cleveland Willams were waiting in the wings...and as you can see, they were no joke
