    Cus D'Amato was arguably the greatest trainer of all time! He coached and trained three young world champions in different eras and weight classes of boxing! Each from different backgrounds too. Shows you how well-rounded the man was.

    @uncjim ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was never a fan of the peek-a-boo style. It handcuffed fighters making it difficult to fight at a distance and also limiting the ability to see punches coming. Jose had lightning fast, powerful combinations. The first time I saw him fight was against Wayne Thornton, who was no pushover. The knockdown (I believe in the first round) seemingly came out of nowhere. In my opinion, Jose was an elite fighter who lacked the heart of a great champion, note the Tiger rematch. Thanks for another one Rich.

    • @itsnotme3882
      @itsnotme3882 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Styles make fighters. I agree, the peak-a-boo can be limiting, but for some fighters it can create limitless opportunities for power and defense.
      Biggest issue with Cus fighters is that they either fit the peak-a-boo style or they washed out of D’Amato’s camp.
      If Cus had a fighter like Ray Leonard who had a very loose and open style he would not have freedom to develop if he was locked into peak-a-boo. However, give a shorter powerful fighter like Tyson that loose open style and he would be done in a few rounds.
      Where that bob and weave, shift into power with hands high on the face (the essential base of peak-a-boo) works best is with shorter fighters who need to generate power while being able to weave inside the opponent’s guard and cut off the retreat by being able to shift in and out of stances inside. This is how Patterson and Tyson, became the youngest heavyweight champions ever…but outside of Tyson, Torres and Patterson; what other champion fighters did Cus D’Amato’s style produce?

    • @HarryHeath-pb6rv
      @HarryHeath-pb6rv ปีที่แล้ว

      I could see why he always wanted to be around Tyson because he was very underated and was worthy of being that spotlight to hog Puerto Rico's finest technique

    • @serenityinside1
      @serenityinside1 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peek a boo overrated imo too. Got a good rep cos of Tyson for sure - I don’t believe it always worked for even him personally.

    • @TheSquad4life
      @TheSquad4life ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah that style is pretty limiting and takes a certain rhythm and build for it to work. The style definitely gained note cos of Tyson’s success especially in his prime

    Jose never knocked down Floyd. Floyd slipped and reporters asked Jose if it was a knock down and Jose said it was. Floyd smacked him around bad in the next sparring session for it. This episode is written in Floyd's biography. Jose did terrible to Mike by exposing some nasty story in the book he wrote. Mike was gonna sue him, but he told Mike he has cassette recordings of their conversations to prove. It was Mike's stories to Jose as friends, not for the whole world to hear. their friendship ended just like that.

      Facts

    • @RichtheFightHistorian
      @RichtheFightHistorian  ปีที่แล้ว

      Fariello stated that Torres did knock Patterson down so I included it in the narrative. Patterson wasn't exactly Jake LaMotta so it isn't inconceivable that Torres could knock him down. They were close friends at one point but the relationship did cool...Torres believed it was because Patterson was jealous of him.

    • @himawalincat9350
      @himawalincat9350 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RichtheFightHistorian Who's Fariello? Was that his trainer? Of course they say that to sell their fighter's name. Jose said it too and Floyd smacked him around for lying. The story is in Floyd's biography "Victory Over Myself". Why Floyd jealous of Jose? Look at their record. When Floyd fired Cus, Jose criticized Floyd in public only to do the same a few years later. In the video you mentioned Cus was supporting Jose and Jose was royal to him at one point. Cus never took any percentage off Jose's purse. Cus was paying Jose and other fighters of his out of Floyd's account. Cus sold all rights of Floyd's fighting films to Jim Jacobs without telling anything to Floyd also. And "they" threatened Floyd for safty of Cus if he had beat Liston. There are so many stories that never have been told in media. Remember Liston only fought 4 championship bouts and 3 of them ended in 1 round. And only other one he quit. Do you believe they were for real ? And why Floyd wanted to think anything of Jose? It's like saying Ali was jealous of Jimmy Ellis or Willie Pastrano. It sounds off,doesn't it ?

    • @RichtheFightHistorian
      @RichtheFightHistorian  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@himawalincat9350 Fariello was the trainer picked by D'Amato to take over the Gramercy Gym. Sounds like you have an anchoring bias with Patterson's book which is fine...You can believe either/or, I am reporting the the facts from Torres' perspective. I will say that your comparison of Torres with the likes of Ellis/Pastrano is way off. Torres had immense popularity as I alluded to in the video. Not only was he rubbing shoulders with the New York literati, he was entertaining the prospect of going into politics as he was friendly with RFK.

    • @himawalincat9350
      @himawalincat9350 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RichtheFightHistorian I'm not biased by the book. I've personally known them all. I was very close to Floyd. I was with him for over 25 years. Jose was never really nice or very friendly. I've fought guys from D'Amato stable in amateurs too. There are inside stories far from what was told by the media because they tend to lie or make things up. BTW Floyd was close with both JFK and RFK. He was in Big Brother joint with Robert. They nicknamed Floyd Gentleman of boxing after he died for good reasons. Jose was cold and not honest even to us kids in boxing game back in the days. Of course I listen to Floyd over him.
