I served as an official with the New Mexico State Athletic Commission alongside of Bob. He was a lot of fun, and beneath that serious exterior was a very playful and kind hearted man! I attended his funeral when we had to say "so long" to my friend.

Bob Foster was a deputy sheriff. To my knowledge, the only boxer who became an actual Sheriff was Jersey Joe Walcott. Joe was the first African American to serve as the elected Sheriff of Camden County, NJ. As usual, a fantastic video!

The Tiger stoppage, with the image of a heretofore indestructible warrior helpless on the canvas remains a shock to this day. I was at the old Springfield Coliseum for Kendall fight, an afternoon Wide World event with Howard Cosell. Foster fought there one other time against Charlie Polite. I lost track of him after retiring. Thanks for filling me in. This was an all time great. A dream match would have been Foster vs Archie Moore. Thanks again Rich. My Saturday morning is off to a great start.
You do good films and it’s interesting and entertaining to look back and profile the lives of Boxers. I really hope that young boxers watch some of your films to help them understand what professional boxing is all about.
How about Eddie Cotton? He was from my Home town of Seattle...he fought for the title, and did well, but he did not have a real knockout punch, and so he lost a split decision to Jose Torres. Cotton worked for Boeing for many years.

@@RichtheFightHistorian when I was a teenager and training I wanted to fight like Dempsey by copying his style when one day the elder old trainer came in and watched me on the bags and sparring and said I was like a young white Bob Foster, when at the time I didn’t realise how much of a compliment it was. Sadly I was nothing like him or Dempsey in the ring but when you’re young you believe you could be, ha.

Great job Rich. Bob Foster would have dominated in any era with his great left jabs and left hooks. He would have dominated Willie Pastrano, Harold Johnson and Jose Torres in his route to face Dick Tiger for the World Light Heavyweight Title and won a belt from him with his iconic KO win. Foster was such a wrecking machine at light heavyweight-but fighting Ali and Frazier was too tall of an order for a light heavy built like Bob-the Frazier fight is like if Tommy Hearns fought Dave Tua. Great video and learned a lot on why Bob Foster was so feared at light heavy.

Bob was probably the best light heavy ever-a victim of his own success, really. No other light heavy could touch him, and he just ran out of people to fight at his natural weight. He was forced to fight the bigger guys for the bigger pay checks!
It always drives me crazy when I see someone clearly unconcious and the ref gives a count instead of ending the fight and letting someone attend to the fighter. The worst one I can remember was when it happened to Joe Walcott

An all-time great who could've been even greater had he stuck exclusively to the Light heavyweight division instead of dabbling in the heavyweight division, where almost all his losses came from.
Imo hardest p4p puncher in history. One shot kayoes of otherwise iron chinned Tiger and Mike Quarry are the stuff of legend. Vicente Rondon went 10 with Earnie Shavers, what Foster did to him inside 2 should have been illegal. Most knockouts in boxing don't actually leave men unconscious, his routinely did.
I feel like with the proper time and regimen Foster would have been able to put on weight while maintaining his speed. Michael Spinks got to around the 200lb mark for Holmes and it really did seem like he had the training go perfectly where he built up his durability and strength while not becoming slow and lumbering. Bob Foster at 200lbs fit would have likely at least put up a better fight against Ali and Frazier, Ali himself said he was glad Foster wasn't heavier, though Ali could have simply been trying to be complimentary.
Bob should have heeded Tommy Loughran's advice. He never had the frame to hold the weight. The Frazier fight shows the greatness of Joe. Bob had height and reach and against a lesser heavyweight he probably wins. But Joe was all pressure and negated Bob's advantages. My trainer used to put me in with a guy half my age and about 5 inches taller than me AND A SOUTHPAW! I would say to Manny "what can I possibly do!" Well to say the least he got the better of me most of the time, but it taught me how to get inside and eliminate his advantages. I hate it when Manny is right! LOL. Great one Rich
Throughout the years I've do you realize how many times Foster pulled a knockout punch on Ali to let him and I say let him win that fight that was one hell of a bottle by watching how he pulls his punches to keep from knocking out because he is in perfect position for where he can't turn away from the punch and he's going into Foster's
Let that be a warning to all young men ; those lady's don't hand around when the good times stop rolling . If you're having doubts , start an escape fund or you'll end up sleeping in your car , thats if she don't take that as well !

Bob was probably the best light heavy ever-a victim of his own success, really. No other light heavy could touch him, and he just ran out of people to fight at his natural weight. He was forced to fight the bigger guys for the bigger pay checks!
It always drives me crazy when I see someone clearly unconcious and the ref gives a count instead of ending the fight and letting someone attend to the fighter. The worst one I can remember was when it happened to Joe Walcott

I feel like with the proper time and regimen Foster would have been able to put on weight while maintaining his speed. Michael Spinks got to around the 200lb mark for Holmes and it really did seem like he had the training go perfectly where he built up his durability and strength while not becoming slow and lumbering. Bob Foster at 200lbs fit would have likely at least put up a better fight against Ali and Frazier, Ali himself said he was glad Foster wasn't heavier, though Ali could have simply been trying to be complimentary.

Bob should have heeded Tommy Loughran's advice. He never had the frame to hold the weight. The Frazier fight shows the greatness of Joe. Bob had height and reach and against a lesser heavyweight he probably wins. But Joe was all pressure and negated Bob's advantages. My trainer used to put me in with a guy half my age and about 5 inches taller than me AND A SOUTHPAW! I would say to Manny "what can I possibly do!" Well to say the least he got the better of me most of the time, but it taught me how to get inside and eliminate his advantages. I hate it when Manny is right! LOL. Great one Rich

Throughout the years I've do you realize how many times Foster pulled a knockout punch on Ali to let him and I say let him win that fight that was one hell of a bottle by watching how he pulls his punches to keep from knocking out because he is in perfect position for where he can't turn away from the punch and he's going into Foster's
