Somewhere Over the Rainbow (feat. Lockeland Strings)

- Hello there!
This is one of my most highly requested songs, and I hope you enjoy it! This was such a joy to record, and this is my first video with a larger production and I'm so glad it turned out the way that it did. This song holds a special place in my heart as The Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite films as a child.
I want to give a huge thank you to Lockeland Strings for being a part of this nostalgic and lovely song, and I also want to thank Jordan Bellamy for allowing us to use his beautiful space.
"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" is a ballad composed by Harold Arlen with lyrics by Yip Harburg written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and was sung by actress Judy Garland in her starring role as Dorothy Gale. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became Garland's signature song.

I closed my eyes and I was five years-old and sitting on the floor in front of the television. Judy Garland would be impressed. Your talent, it's obvious, has no limits. It's been a privilege watching it grow.
Hi Christina,
I coul'nt have said it better!
You not only get a thumbs up,
but a gold star as well!
@@johnsader8811 Thank you.
Ditto, says a 60 year guy.
Thank you Christina! This is so sweet!!
I just noticed, she’s also wearing red shoes.
Everything from this young lady is the antidote to so much of what's just not right these days. Brutish, crude and crass...here's elegant, understated and graceful.
Absolutely perfectly said!
I am old as dirt , but this song , the way you sing it, takes me back to when i was 12 years old and in love with Judy Garland , just like every other 12 year old boy of that era.
Miss Young, your voice is so classically beautiful that sometimes, it just hurts.
If I hadn't spent 10 years in Nashville myself, I wouldn't understand why you don't have a record deal. I'm not sure that you would want one. But in the wasteland of the pop music of today, your talent deserves a much wider audience. The world will be a better place when it finds you.
Some day, and it will happen if I am lucky, I am going to walk into a small club and hear her. I think she'll end up doing gigs in NYC, Paris, etc. At least I hope so.
@@gerryleb8575 she’s playing The Rainbow Room in NYC early May. I don’t know the exact date maybe the first or 2nd. So it looks like you called it
@@davidverry9214 nice 👍
Yes. And I agree. She's one of those Gems that show up every now and then. I hope she continues on.
Everything about this screams classic! The song..The dress..The strings..The beautiful young woman...A time capsule!!
Except the idiot masks!
@@annimal9935 goes without sayin
@@annimal9935 I actually wouldn't mind the masks if they were all black.
@@d.heller7038 bahhhh
..........and the red shoes 👠
I have never heard one singer that was able to sing so well in so many styles. Beautiful!
Not to take anything away from Allison, she is marvelous for her age, but listen to Linda Ronstadt perform American Standards with Nelson Riddle.
Also, you look the part with the red shoes and everything. Stunning.
Oh my gosh!! I didn't notice the red shoes...!
@@geoaffleck open your eyes FFS!!
"Hmmm, what color shoes should I wear? Oh, ruby red of course!"
Allison killed it, and so did the Lockeland Strings and whoever did the arrangement.
She knew what she was doing. I have the same shoes as her. My hubby loves seeing me in them.
Destined for all-time greatness, she is.
Beautiful voice, beautiful looks, its a wonder she isn't the top act long ago. At the same time the public are following relative amateurs.
@@hughneek12 Yeah, you know you can praise an artist without putting everyone else down. I mean, if your manager in work said yeah, Mick is great employee, a real asset to the company, but Hugh Neek? He's a relative amateur.
@@johnc3403 Yeah, Mick is a super guy!
Agreed.
@@hughneek12 The public listens to Nicky Minaj, Takeshi69, Drake and such (and whatever BS is in fashion today). You think they give a shit about such music? The only good enough thing in the charts last years has been Billie Eillish
My,, God. This woman can sing. One of the best version I've ever heard. Sing on forever, young lady. Richard in Reno
When the voice transcends the beauty of instruments that we have been listening to for hundreds of years, you know you're listening to something incredible. How lucky we are to be alive in a time that we get to experience her voice.
I'm an old timer Allison and boy, did you bring back memories for me. You sang that like an angel. Thank you kiddo.
Thank Heaven for Allison! A gift to us all.
Wow ! A redheaded Judy Garland. You gave me chills just like she does when singing that song. BEAUTIFUL.
I've heard this song many times as a kid. I don't remember this song making me cry when I was a kid, but as an adult I have trouble not tearing up at the line "birds fly over the rainbow. Why then oh why can't I?"
Oh, for sure, it's a song that changes with your age and circumstances. All part of the magic.
It ALWAYS got to me as a kid. Still does. It’s song of longing for things you can’t imagine, but you KNOW are out there. It’s one of the greatest songs of the 20th century, in my opinion.
You too huh?
My God! Absolutely Perfect! Why doesn't the whole World know about you!
The the blue dress and red slippers were a nice touch. Well done. Spectacular voice, as usual. Alison NEVER disappoints. A tremendous talent.
I have watched this a least seven times and this is the first time I saw the red shoes, spend all my time looking at the beautiful face.
I love her voice!!! I love listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Rodemary Clooney, and Billie Holliday. Her voice reminds me of these all time
greats. She’s so talented.
I don't know if you'll see this, but I just want to thank you for reminding me that life is beautiful.
Mrs. Young. The second you opened your mouth and began to sing, Judy Garland just sat up and shed a tear listening to this version of this song. This was so wonderful to listen to! Thanks so much for sharing this with us! God bless you! Cheers!!
One of the few songs that makes this big guy cry.
The ruby slippers are a nice touch, Dorothy :) All we need is a little dog, too
Young lady, God has gifted you a beautiful singing voice!
The tone of your voice backed by the cello made my entire body tingle. You ma'am are a blessing to our ears.
Yes. That happens to me to. I physically feel it in my chest. It’s on the words “there’s “ and “and”. Glad I’m not the only one. I was gonna call my cardiologist.
I think it's the viola that's doing the work. It was prominent in the backing instrumental.
Allison, this is amazing. Thank you from an old lady who remembers a young Judy Garland singing this.
As I listened and watched this wonderful performance " Chills washed across my body " You got it girl ! Careful out there... Lions , Tigers , and Bears !
I didn't think anyone could sing this song better than Judy did. Then I heard Iz's take on it. That was the new standard for me. Now it's this version. Just wow.
That is a beautiful dress, she does really look good in it, I know not the point, her voice is gorgeous as ever
A long time ago when my kids were little, there was a theater in my town. It was an old theater that they fixed up to show old movies from the 30' 40's and 50's. Velvet covered seats and a curtain that drew back when the movie started. They had a huge old popcorn machine at the back of the theater. You could smell the fresh popcorn. They ran Wizard of OZ and I took my kids. They closed that theater a few years ago. A relic of the modern age. I hadn't thought about that in years. Thanks for reminding me. That was a beautiful performance.
Five beautiful ladies, beautiful strings, beautiful voice, beautiful song...just beautiful!
I hope when this pandemic has ended we have the opportunity to see you perform in person. It is surreal to see you sing in front a quartet of masked violinists. Somewhere over the rainbow we are not wearing masks and you are performing in a nightclub filled with adoring fans. Until then ...
She'll be selling out stadiums.
The amino acid, L-Lysine keeps ALL viruses from replicating in the human body. It works. Been using it since THE SEVENTIES.
@@hypnotistraywilliams Definitely should be, but I think I'd enjoy her more in a smaller venue. I can think of several clubs in the Los Angeles area (House of Blues, Whiskey-a-go-go) that I would pay any amount to see her in.
@@Vitaee13 she's great, IMO not any stadiums but would more enjoyable in a max about about 400. , her style does not fit stadiums, they are for noise and undecipherable lyrics
Tonetwisters No it doesn’t, stop spreading pseudoscientific nonsense that could get people killed.
I’m a great fan of her singing while self accompanied, but this video shows much maturity and greater sophistication in both her voice and interpretive artistry. And that’s not simply because of the string quartet, although they add a lot. The quality of her voice and the way she interprets this classic transports me to another age.
It’s one thing to be be able to hit the notes. But to absolutely nail the delivery and to perfectly emote the feeling behind every lyric as it comes is what separates wheat from chafe. It’s the difference between an act of casual labor and work of art. I came back looking for this cover a year after my first viewing because it stuck with me how masterful this performance was.
Oh my goodness. So beautiful, so very beautiful. 🥰
0:26 and I turned to mush. Absolutely captivating in every way possible.
This is gorgeous.
your talent is massive why are you not a big recording artist, I could listen to your voice all day.....
I didn’t think anyone could ever sing this song that wasn’t a pale comparison to Judy Garland. Alison, you’ve managed to make it your own. I am teary. This was gorgeous.
I'VE ALSO NEARLY CRIED. FANTASTIC COVER!!!
I don’t think it’s bad when someone is a “pale” comparison to her. I think this song is one of the few where you should leave it alone. I love the way Alison sung this song, but I truly believe that this song is one of the few where no “new” takes should be made
I've said it before and I'll say it again. I would listen to Allison Young sing the phone book. Your voice is simply marvelous in every aspect of the word.
Fantastic, Great String Arrangement, Allison showing more of her moving skills as a singer.
What a voice. She could do the entire Judy repertoire.
Fabulous. You are amazing, Allison.
Hopefully she replies to this.
@@KuriosPC Well, it would be an honour to hear directly from someone I admire so much but it's not necessary. As long as she knows how we feel.
Saw the Bygones 2 years ago in Liverpool. They where awesome, sadly out of the country for their return gig this week (9/24)
Apart from being a world class singer with incredible range and musically. She’s also adorably cute 🥰
The red shoes are a fantastic touch
Oh my. Judy Garland is back on the stage.
Stunning, absolutely beautiful.
❤
Who doesn’t like Somewhere over the Rainbow yeah, but my WORD this is a BEAUTIFUL RENDITION!!
I just watched other performances of this song. One on a reality show for singers. NONE of them have a voice this good. Thanks for doing this.
Allison and lakeland players. Just a great professional performance.
THANK YOU
There is something about a string quartet that helps elevate this song to a new level for me. I knew you were going to be amazing, Allison, but the strings really added something! Love the outfit, the richness of your tone (you didn't overpower the song), and the combination of your voice with the strings! Well done! 🔥🔥
Take away the strings, add a solo guitar and Eva Cassidy (Over The Rainbow) and you will hear what it should sound like.....
@@ytubsave307 Every version is different. To say or think that a song ‘should’ sound a certain way is the thought of a pompous simpleton.
The strings detracted tremendously from Allison's wonderful singing.
Once again charmed. Thank you for the kindness.
I've watched this performance many many times. Allison did such an exquisite presentation of a classic song. I've seen many of her other videos, she has such a beautiful voice and range.
beautiful and she sings very well also. watching several vids I noticed she usually holds back a bit .It was great to see her cut loose and belt out a little. Very talented young lady.
I am sitting here 430 in the morning thinking Allison has not posted in a while at 500 this posts, it is worth the wait. beautiful.
The entire presentation is amazing.
Well, now... Judy would be proud. Did you ever as a child watching the Wizard of Oz think you could do this as good as Judy? Well, you did!!! Bravo.
Utterly fantastic!
Love the frock too; and ruby slippers are a nice touch.
What a voice!
Especially suited for these old classics...
Allison's singing takes you over the rainbow.
Young lady clearly is talented, her voice reminds me of the singers of old whom never depended on modern technology just pure talent, Very Classy and classic sound.
Allison, your soothing voice literally takes my breath away. There just aren’t any words.
Marvelous. Simply marvelous!!!
This is a perfect performance. Well done Allison.
Uh, not even close.
Did she reply yet?
Far from it. Using wrong words, breathing in the wrong places, failed to maintain a legato line. She didn't impress me and the red shoes didn't help.
@@budjeansonne4482 - Yeah, but no one knows who you are.
That microphone does a really great job of capturing the fullness of her voice.
I have great grand children & I hope they get to listen to you as long as they are alive, beautiful cover...
It is very rewarding to support Allison on Patreon. You support a more beautiful world when you do. Love you Allison!
well, there goes my macho old soldier act.. made me tear up a bit.. that is perfect.. you're an angel.. keep it up.. i love you and what you are..
I'm starting to become addicted to your voice and grace! Hope you never stop love singing. Wish you all the happiness in the world!
As smooth as a hot knife through warm butter. Beautifully done... Judy would be proud!
Allison this is the most authentic vocal performance I've seen in quite some time. I hope all good things for you.
My TH-cam algorithm is showing much better taste than usual. Gingers rock!
Another calm gentle song sung by someone with a soothing voice. Love it
I hit the Like because there is no "love" button. I am in tears here. I would love to hear you sing "Don't be Fooled by the Rain." Thank you so much for your work. Allison hope you see this and will give you resolve to keep pushing on. Being an artist is not an easy life.
The last note was surprisingly powerful. I'm putting this one in my favorites folder.
Allison needs to become a big STAR!! I hope something big really happens for her.
Bravo! She Scored !!! Nailed it
She far more skilled, talented, and beautiful than majority of people you hear and see on mass media but she will never garner that attention because she will not debase herself and be vulgar for clicks. 👍👍👍
The warm lyrical sounds of Judy Garland's voice floats in the air. Close your eyes while you listen to this and you'll be transported to a different place and time and swear its her... breathtaking, absolutely breathtaking...
Perfect performance right down to the Rudy red slippers! BEAUTIFUL!
Wow what a beautiful performance with your stunningly gorgeous voice that flows so effortlessly through out this amazing song!!!!!!!! Thanks for this wonderful rendition!!!!!!!!
This would be the PERFFECT!!!!! song to end a concert too.
This is just stunning! Amazing vocal performance and beautifully arranged string quartet. Wow wow.
Somewhere over the rainbow, I hope Judy Garland is smiling and singing softly along as this beautiful young woman breathes new life into this song.
Beautiful girl, beautiful song, beautiful music.
How angelic this young lady is!
Totally captivating. Have been wondering where you were. Well worth the wait.
Pure as Pure.

Well, you outdid yourself on this one. Bravo!
There is a remake of a Broadway classic looking for you! It will be there and you will KILL it! Keep singing those songs!
Such a beautiful song and a stunning performance
Easy to smash that "like" BUTTON. Good Job Ms. Young!!
I love everything about this performance, including but certainly not limited to Jordan Lehning's arrangement for string quartet. Perfection.
So beautiful, song and singer. Good job, pretty lady!
I was absolutely mesmerized. Truly another amazing performance. Thank you!!!!
Ahhhh....I’m an old man and you did this perfectly! Thank you for the trip back in time.
This brought tears of joy to my eyes. Allison, you are an astonishingly wonderful person and a great artist. Thank you!
Wearing those wee Red Shoes I kinda expected you to click your heels after the song ended... That would have been a really nice touch in honor for Judy after you finished making that lovely song your own... how beautiful.
Tears and goosebumps! brought me right back to my childhood when I would watch The Wizard of Oz every year. Thank you Allison, you have a lovely voice. Thanks to everyone that made this happen.
... glorious ... simply beautiful - THANK YOU! This would be a fabulous 1st dance song for a bride & groom - you guys do this song such justice .. BRAVO - well done! ... fabulous dress, now click those heels 😉. ❤️ 🇨🇦.
This is such a classic song, you owned it, perfection in every way, from your clothing and shoes, right on to the strings. I am old school, vietnam veteran, you made me cry with tears of happiness. There is still beauty in this world, you are a gift from above.
I've been watching her PMJ videos over and over, and it just hit me: Allison is our new Vera Lynn. I guess Mother Earth only allows for one soul at a time to have that much _pure_ talent, unbridled expressivity, and infectious joy. It all makes sense now.
Your voice deserves this level of audio production quality. Great to hear it at last! I'm addicted.
I really enjoy the way you're holding the notes in perfect pitch - without introducing any vibrato. Remarkable.
Some people just get all the talent and looks. Not fair! A great song sung to perfection. Thanks.
Amazing voice and awesome rendition!!!
