  • Merle Ronald Haggard (April 6, 1937 - April 6, 2016) was an American country singer, songwriter, guitarist, and fiddler.
Merle Haggard was a smooth singer, adept guitarist, insightful songwriter, and Country Music Hall of Fame member. His legacy includes "Okie From Muskogee," "Workin' Man Blues," "Big City," "Mama Tried" and "Today I Started Loving You Again"
Haggard was born in Oildale, California, during the Great Depression. His childhood was troubled after the death of his father, and he was incarcerated several times in his youth. After being released from San Quentin State Prison in 1960, he managed to turn his life around and launch a successful country music career. He gained popularity with his songs about the working class that occasionally contained conformist and jingoistic themes contrary to the prevailing anti-Vietnam War sentiment of much popular music of the time. Between the 1960s and the 1980s, he had 38 number-one hits on the US country charts, several of which also made the Billboard all-genre singles chart. Haggard continued to release successful albums into the 2000s.
He received many honors and awards for his music, including a Kennedy Center Honor (2010), a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (2006), a BMI Icon Award (2006), and induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame (1977), Country Music Hall of Fame (1994) and Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame (1997). He died on April 6, 2016-his 79th birthday-at his ranch in Shasta County, California, having recently suffered from double pneumonia.
    LIVE FROM FRESNO, CALIFORNIA. 05/04/1984

At 84 yrs. old Merle is the best Country Western singer I have ever heard in my life. His songs told the story of his life. That's where real country western music comes from. These singers that have told their life in their music comes from the heart and soul. I can go back many years as a farm boy born just a few years before WWII from up country Maine and I listened to country music all my life going working in the barn. Rock & Roll was okay but there was too much Make Believe wording put into it. My check out time is not too far down the road at 84 yrs. old. I am former USAF, U.S. Army..Sgt. First Class..retired, Federal Law Enforcement Officer..retired..disabled, Nationally Certified Operating Room Technician..worked all kinds of surgical cases for 22 yrs...God Bless Country Western Music into eternity...Sgt. Ron..retired,.disabled May 2024.

Most of todays "country artists" couldn't carry Merle's guitar case when it comes to raw country talent! What they call country today is nothing but rap with a fiddle accompaniment!!!

Ronnie Milsap said exactly: Merle Haggard ... he alone, saved country music, in the PBS documentary by Ken Burns, Emmylou Harris is asked what country music is ... she answered: take any Haggard record and put it on, no matter where the turntable needle falls... This will explain what country music is. 🎸❤

I absolutely love watching Willie and his kids. This song is such a gem. I'll love Willie til the day i pass away and beyond. Willie and John Prine have been my favorite singer/singwriters forever.
On a side note, the first time I saw Willie was when I was 16 yrs old. Im 62 now. Of course, I was standing pretty close to the stage when Willie and I locked eyes. He politely smiled, tipped his hat, pointed at me and gently tossed it towards me. Unfortunately, his hat tumbled across my fingertips in to the hands of other eager fans. Willie looked at me, snapped his fingers as if to say damn! All was good tho ..I really appreciated the gesture.
To Lukas, watching you watch your Dad is so genuine. Your encouraging quick smiles are heartfelt. I actually had goosebumps ..even on the back of my knees! 😂 I truly enjoy you Lukas ..you and your family are true treasures. ❤

Yeah country music had been on a respirator for 20 years, we at least had Hag, Willie, George, Ray Price and a few more there still keeping the traditional sound out there....but, when Hag left, there is a huge void...I just pray with his music and so much more like his music are so accessible, that someone will step up. Until then, thank you for the uploads like HIll Billy and Amazon(that's where I spend most of my free time now)! Hag's song "Are we going down hill" pains me now to listen to it.....I truly feel we have been and are especially with country music. But, his last repeat of the chorus is changed up a bit to say that it isn't and we should not go down that path! So there is hope, always hope! :)

Ricardo, I can see how you feel that way, but I truly believe that Merle put so much into preserving country music by playing Lefty, Bob Wills, Jimmie Rodgers and so many more. I don't believe the good Lord would let those efforts fade away; I trust that there are many, many young people out there paying attention and will not let Merle's music die and they will grow to know and love his music and so many that came before Merle. He was so very gifted!

MIchael, I am almost 60 years old and grew up listening to and dancing to Merle, but only was familiar with his commercial hits. Now that I am older and have lived life and seen heartache and loss and many ups and downs, it's his music that gives me most joy. I can now go research all of his albums and listen to them. He was such a fantastic musical genius and he left all of us a tremendous gift. Like Emmy Lou Harris said, "just take any of Hag's records and let the needle fall, that's will tell you what country music is about."

I agree he was the whole package.....his musical talents were so far above everyone else, then he had THE voice, THE songwriting....and he knew how and when to lay out a note, how long to hold it and put so much emotion into everything he did....this in itself is a marvel...but when you go back into his youth and young adulthood and see what he overcame to become what he is ....LEGEND! God surely had His hand on Merle!

Back in the day, my friends and I rode our motorcycles all over the Western United States to attend all of the Hag's
Concerts. Countless Country Vocalist's began leaving true Country behind hoping to draw a larger crowd, to sell
mere records and tapes by going Country
Rock and the like. Merle Haggard never
done that, never even considered it...
Many years ago, His Bus stopped at a Truck Stop here in Utah. He was handing out black & white pictures of himself,
and sharing a Bottle with people in line.
I'll never forget just how real, just how
he fit right in with us common folks....

My dad's band used to open for Haggard back in the late 70s and early 80s.. I met the man many times as a kid. About 2 years before he passed we went to dinner with he, Benny and Theresa when they came to do a show in the town I live in.. My dad had passed on several years before this, but Merle kept in touch with me and the remaining band mates... He was a humble soul.. Miss the man...

The year was 1993 and it was a hot August day when my mama died. Later on when going through her meager possessions, i found a Merle compilation tape with his music from the early '80s. I was a heavy metal guy, but i knew my mom loved this Merle guy, so out of respect for her i took the tape and listened. I was blown away by the 'realness' of Merle and his music. Touched me to the core and was hooked. Surely hope to shake his hand in Heaven some day and say a simple thanks, maybe even with a tear or two. Love you Merle. Rest easy.
