This time on the AutoEdits Drive Your Adventures series of videos... we go to the heart of Death Valley... in the middle of July... in Large Marge the 1973 Mustang!
Yep, we put the Mustang to the ultimate test in one of the harshest climates on planet Earth. There were record setting high temperatures in the 120 plus degree range and I show you how to not just survive a trip like this but to ENJOY IT!
The two main themes of the video are... get out and enjoy your project car however you can AND get out to Death Valley to explore whenever you can, even summertime. The places I highlight in this visit are all accessible with a regular car (no 4x4 needed) and even better yet...all easily done in a single day!
The key for me is to have a nice place to base camp out of so I stay at The Ranch at Death Valley... cool rooms, good food and a spring fed pool to cool off in.
It's hard to express how proud I am that the Mustang performed so well on this trip. When you put so much hard work into a project and have it survive such punishment it means a lot. The Total Control Products suspension and steering made the Mustang feel amazing down the highway at any speed and is a ton of fun in the twisty canyon roads. I have a Dakota Digital VHX instrument panel in there and keep finding new things that make it more useful and the perfect blend of modern performance and classic looks. Speaking of classic... the Classic Auto Air system worked really good (need to get those vents... anybody have a 1973 center vent I can buy?) and the Painless Performance wiring harness never missed a volt. Another hero component is the BeCool Radiator and fan combo... can you believe this thing didn't overheat... I was shocked and impressed!
Make sure to check out all of those install videos for more information on all of those systems as they got installed into this vehicle.
    • Classic Ford Mustang B...
If you'd like, I can put together a google map of this trip... just let me know.
I don't have a deal worked out with the hotel in this video but if you happen to call for a reservation because of this... please tell them "LARGE MARGE SENT YA"
Makes me laugh just to think about it and couldn't hurt... plus if they get enough... maybe they'll throw in a frosty beverage of your choice... who knows!
Thank you so much for watching...Enjoy your drive!

I definitely feel like a lot of people worry to much about perfecting their cars before they ever enjoy them. Who cares if the paint is rough, or the interior isn't perfect? Get out and have some fun! Plus, I think there are more than enough trailer queen show cars out there, we need more drivers.
As a wise man once said, "Don't get it right, get it running."

I know a big part of my own project is that, "get it right." The other stuff comes later. Not to be a trailer queen (I don't even own a trailer) but to enjoy what I'm driving in both appearance and capacity

Thanks for this Jason. That blurb you had about enjoying it... I need to take that lesson. I have this notion that a car needs to be done before it should be enjoyed. I think the idea of enjoying the project before it's 100% would keep me more interested in stuff.

@@AutoEdits Did you take the 14 out of the SCV? When I used to drive up to the Eastern Sierras, I would always stop at Primo Burgers in one direction and Mojave Thai in the other. I'd always wanted to check out the Voyager restaurant at the space port, but never did.

I have a Ram and a wrangler too, but my frame up build is a 79 CJ7. It’s sat since 2006 when I did the Rubicon shake down run. Never thought is would be reliable enough for a road trip. This video made me want to change out its axle seals and fluids to maybe enjoy it again. Oh, and to quit using the weather as an excuse to not enjoy life. Thanks for the inspiration Jason!

The latest was a few years ago traveling to Sturgis, SD for the Mustang Rally held after the big bike rally. It was a 1500 mile trip, one way. The only mishap was the electric fan connection coming loose creating a bit of an overheat. Just gotta do it again someday.

Very "cool" video, I really enjoyed that. My Wife and I went through a lot of that area once on our way home from Chandler AZ to British Columbia. That whole area is like Mars to us, we live in a rainforest and it could not be any different. We really miss the desert and it's beauty. It hit 156F the day we were there, damn that was insane. I was in a modern F150 lifted White Supercrew, not a almost 50 year old Black car, you sir are a brave man. Happy for you that your Mustang is working so well, I've been enjoying the hell out of my 69 Coupe and like your car it is far from done. I work in arizona, Peoria to be exact...113F outside, cars ranging from 130-150 depending on colour of interior black cars with black leather parked in the sun are basically no goes if you want your skin to survive even through our work pants, im at two+ gallons of water a day right now and still feel thirsty its still 100F at 9 at night here, the Nation Weather service radio station is very helpful in giving updates on the weather and stuff, water is your friend...And not just drinking it either, keep a moist towellet to put under your hat, even if you have long hair like me when the wind picks up it feels like AC, have an umbrella make your own shade!

And have been taking interest in exploring California from my location in Phoenix AZ , I’ve been building a 66 mustang coupe since 2013 that I bought in Tucson had it shipped to Illinois converted in into a fastback, and have. Even building it from the ground up ever since!. moved out here in 2017, and hopefully can do a. Break in trip to Death Valley probably in the cooler season. Ok, so I start binge watching your Jeep series and notice what looks like a Weiand (or B&M) supercharged motor on an engine stand in the garage (37" tire episode from like 2016...). Hmmm, my 1969 Camaro has a similar setup (B&M on a 350)... Now I'm watching 1973 Ford Mustang TH-cam video's... and I'm a Chevy guy! Only You and your style can make that happen. Good Job! Keep'm coming. :)

I went to the other side of the 395. Lake Sabrina. Day Time High 92, Overnight Low 38. At Death Valley temps, it's more like 1/2 Gallon per hour. But yeah, the Mustang was only new once. Run it as is. Who cares if others don't like it. Fix things when you can. Better than sitting there forever waiting to be "perfect". Using it is perfect.

Love your videos Jason! This one really makes appreciate your taking the time to edit another great video. I couldn't help but wonder how many takes you'd make just filming the approaches to the Stop signs, entrance to the "Ranch", exit of the "Ranch", the road stops, and everything. Your editing skills made the video seem very smooth and seamless. Great job on the film, and great job on the car. I hope you didn't damage your tires and wheels. Keep us updated with what happened to cause the vibration and other noises.

    Badwater.
Lowest spot in North America? Lowest spot in the Western Hemisphere.
About 135 miles away near Lone Pine is Mt Whitney. 14,494 ft. The tallest point in the lower 48 states.
Once a year there is a running race from Badwater to the summit of Mt Whitney. Can you imagine what kind of shape you would have to be in to even complete that, let alone win it?
