  • In this video we'll show you how to prepare an existing part to make a fiberlgass mold from. We are using a side cover from a CX500 motorcycle to make molds so that we can make some carbon fiber and fiberglass parts for a custom motorcycle.
    In the next video we'll show you how we built the mold from this plug.
    Tools and Materials used:
    Melamine (for the flange)
    Hot Glue Gun and Hot Glue
    Divinycell Foam Scraps - a urethane foam or wood scraps would also work, Styrofoam will not work with polyester putties
    Autobody Filler or Bondo
    Sand Paper
    Rubber Sanding Block
    Part All #2 Wax
    Part All #10 PVA
    Spray Gun

    I make custom kids pedal planes. A few years ago I started to do them in fiberglass. Needless to say I have been online a lot digging into the procesess of making a mold. YOUR video is the quickest one I have seen that just gets to the point. Thanks for this video. I have saved it for future reference.

    Great vid! Thanks for sharing. Got a question though.
    Given the bondo and the item trim line(edge) gets fused together in the process of filling, how much trim line is left visible after the copy is made? Wouldnt it be difficult to know where to trim/cut? Tks

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question! On this plug Tim did a really good job of blending the bondo to the part and the trim line was lost. In this case there are a couple of options, one is to scribe the trim line on the plug after doing the bondo work and before releasing the other option is to drop the part back into the mold after the mold is made and scribe the mold. A carbide metal scribe works or in a pinch a sharpened nail also works.

      @@FiberglassSupply ok im doing a front fender for VW scirocco, but have some problem im facing. Especially with some of edges folding inwards. Making 1pc mould would have mechanical lock when demoulding...is it advisable to have a 3part mould and still be able to use a infusion method? Tks for ur help and reply

      Eddie CJ Kang yes you will need to do a multiple piece mold. You can send some pictures of the part to matthew@fiberglasssupply.com and I will make some recommendations specific to your project.

    Thanks for making this content! I'm looking for a supplier for fiberglass mold/CF parts materials so I went to your website. Sorry, it's a mess. You seem pretty with it just was kind of jarring to go to your website and think "are these the same guys?"

    Why bonding? Use modelling wax, faster and no sanding.

    What kind of shop do I need to look for to have something like this done?
    I have a bumper splitter that is no longer sold, so I need one made using my old one as a reference, but I have no idea what kind of shop would replicate the part in Fiberglass.

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Look for a composites or fiberglass fabricator or repair shop, if you call our shop our customer service guys should also be able to point you in the right direction or see if we know of someone in your area.

    I didn't know you could thin Bondo with rubbing alcohol

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, we tend to use rubbing alcohol with a high alcohol content (99%)

    Need to consider shrinkage. Mold will shrink a bit and parts will shrink. Production parts will be slightly smaller than original and may not fit. This would require to build up original part before making a mold.

  • @austindearman2296

    I am wanting to cast a large plastic part and don't want to damage the original part if possible, how would I go about that.

    • @FiberglassSupply
      @FiberglassSupply  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You need to take care in how you mount the part (if it needs to be mounted) to not damage it, so cover it with tape, use adhesives that can be removed, be careful if you have anything that needs to be sanded (like the putty work on this part), etc. When you release the part to build the mold use wax and PVA, apply the PVA until you have a pretty thick coat, it will form a physical barrier between the part and the tooling gelcoat. It takes some care but can be done.

      It is really up to our tech what their preference is, no particular reason.

      It really depends on the tech and their personal preference.
