  • Over the past 20 years, significant advancements in stem cell research and therapies have been one of the most promising methods of creating new insulin making cells needed to cure type 1 diabetes.
Vertex Pharmaceuticals, a biotech company, recently began a clinical trial where it plans to treat 17 participants who have type 1 diabetes with new stem cell derived insulin making cells. The first patient in the trial has had positive results.
Other companies around the world including ViaCyte and CRISPR, as well as Novo Nordisk, one of the biggest insulin manufacturers in the world, are also working on curing the disease. CNBC explores why finding a cure for diabetes is so hard and just how close Vertex and other companies are to solving this problem.

My oldest son is in his early 20's and he has type 1 diabetes. But thank God for this piece of article th-cam.com/users/postUgkxVYhghKWmrUgXARZ_ydZTvmmcrw5L0I5i At first he thought he had the flu and was lying down on the bed for three days until his sister took him to the hospital. They took his blood and it was 600. What I do not understand is how he could have gotten it, since no one in the family has it. But he is winning the battle now. This is good stuff.

This is true. While I don't have either t1 or2,I've also heard "cure in the works" for years and having had kin and friends with t2,I always kept an eye on this.
I have a friend now at end stage t2 diabetes and know people who put their t2 into remission by stopping the standard American diet and switching to keto.
I've done keto for 15 years to prevent diabetes...Anyway,I don't see any cure working in the long run as long as people continue to eat processed HFCS,seed oils, sugar laden crap promoted on tv and sold everywhere. The drug industry is working on a drug that mimics what the ketogenic diet does...I hate to think how much they will charge for it..It won't be pretty.
      Just my two cents here.

"5 years away from a cure" is a phrase I’ve heard for nearly 26 years. Fortunately I have been able to reign in my hopes and expectations, but for a long time I just didn’t take care of my t1d because I was sure the cure was coming along soon enough. All of this is exciting, but if you’re new to following diabetes cure news, please consider this quote from the video: "you have to be healthy when cures arrive." Think of each scientific breakthrough as another incentive to strive for even tighter control of your BGLs, another reason to stay healthy so that you can, eventually, enjoy your diabetes-free body in full health.

dwagner49 I was diagnosed with T1D in 1978. I was told by one of the Doctors treating me then, that I was "lucky" in that I would probably live long enough to see a cure. Over 40 years later, I, like you, am still waiting. Personally, I don't think it will happen (a cure for Type 1 Diabetes) for a long, long time. The reason being that a cure would collapse a whole industry, and many Doctors careers. Too many people are making money from it. Name ONE disease which has been cured in this country at least during the past 50 years. I can't think of one. If a cure comes, I think it will come from a European country.

For 31 years and currently suffering from complications to my eyes, kidneys, feet and my brain as i can’t afford the existing technologies like CGM and insulin pump to keep things under control. I’m happy to see this massive breakthrough in finding the cure for this horrible disease (I call it the slow cancer) but I don’t think further progress will come to surface anytime soon as it means big companies producing medical equipment and medication for diabetes will face massive sudden income loss, and until they control whatever solution will come next to ensure money flow, they will not allow a full cure to come out now. Fingers crossed, I can peacefully die in the coming few years that left of my life knowing that next generations will not have to go through the suffering that all type 1 Dia. Patients went/are going through. God bless all those who worked on this amazing achievement and hopefully more to come in the future.

if you keep your a1c low, you will not have all these complications... eat a low carb diet and your sugar levels will not spike after meals.. this means eating veggies, meats, some fruits, cheese and yogurts. cut out processed foods, sugar including soda, RICE, BREAD and Potators. and never eat pizza or spaghetti. If you question a food... eat it, then check your bloodsugar 2 hours after that meal, if your spiking above 180, never have that meal again!

My wife of our 44 year marriage developed T1D when I first met her at the age of seventeen. She was determined to not let it interfere with her life nor let it be public knowledge and kept it in her background with great effort involving regular Dailey testing and multiple daily injections. She found pumps to indiscriminate and uncomfortable and kept using injection with ever changing mixes of long and short insulins depending on her physical demands and variations. She is currently using remote blood testing that transmits to her phone giving signals when parameters are breached keeping tight blood sugar control with little effort.
Now in her sixties she has no side effects from the disease and continues to live and do the things she wants when she wants.

Until everyone can get this treatment, CGM should be covered by insurance for every diabetic. I was told I was pre-diabetic but my insurance will not pay for CGM unless I am on insulin. I bought the CGM myself and by closely monitoring my sugar levels in real time, I have improved my A1C significantly enough to stay off of medication. Now I only use a CGM once every few months or so to make sure I am staying on track. So far so good. Information is power. Why insurance companies won’t pay to keep people off more expensive life altering drugs is beyond my comprehension.

For type 2 diabetes (T2D, I highly encourage you to watch the TH-cam channel Beat Diabetes. The man has had T2D for many years. He uses just a glucose meter and testing how high body reacts to various carbohydrate foods.
Also, I encourage you to read:
"The Obesity Code" and "The Diabetes Code" both by Jason Fung, MD
"Why We Get Sick" by Benjamin Bikman, PhD.
"Diabetes Epidemic and You" by Joseph Kraft, MD, MS, FCAP.
"The Big Fat Surprise" by Nina Teicholz.
There are a lot of other great books.
Due to all the T2D and obesity in my family, I just assume that I have type 2 diabetes in situ, as described by Joseph Kraft, and eat 20 or fewer grams of carbohydrates per day.
While at the in situ level, T2D can only be diagnosed using a 2-hour insulin assay test. A CGM or glucose meter would do nothing to help me.

@@kimberlycooper4170 Exactly, "The Diabetes Code" is amazing. Particularly, is it chapter 4, the deep explanation of how metabolism works; including glucose/insulin/etc, was absolutely fantastic. It's the most empowering and informative book I've read since, well, probably since about 10 years ago when I stumbled on the 'eat real food' nutritionists and moved away from highly processed "foods" from a box. "The Diabetes Code" definitely rises to the level of a "once in a decade" book for me. Excellent suggestions. "The Big Fat Surprise" is a close second for the most impactful and informative.

There's a lot more to being diabetic than people realize. I'm Type 2. I'm also autistic (only recently diagnosed, 41 now, was 38 when I was diagnosed,) have severe depression, hyptertension, anxiety, and a host of other problems. I had issues before I got diabetes, obviously. But after that all the symptoms of my other issues got dialed up to 11 along with a bunch of new symptoms. Maybe one or two would be manageable, but trying to monitor my mood, cook so I can eat healthier, do everything I need to do...I can't work any more and I can barely function. Before diabetes, I was functional, if just barely. It makes you tired all the time, it makes you in pain from the neuropathy, you have to jab yourself with needles multiple times a day....People really don't understand the severe impact diabetes has on your mental as well as physical health. And type 2 is possible to get genetically too. I have it, my father has it, my mother has it, my grandfather and grandmother have it, my brother has it. I'm the only one of those that is overweight (a legacy of the emotional problems caused by undiagnosed autism and other mental issues for so long--I sought refuge in food when I was young and then never got the weight to come off despite trying.)

try fasting and a carnivore (plant-free, sugar-free) diet.
There is a lot of evidence recently that you can put T2D into remission by doing a ketogenic or even better carnivore diet. Also, plants in the diet have been shown to cause depression and anxiety so a carnivore diet is ideal...

I'm type 2 and eat low carb.. Meats cheese, veggies, eggs, some fruits that are low sugar... I cut out Bread, rice, potato's, and most processed foods. My BG never spikes. If im unsure of a food, I eat it then test 1.5 to 2 hours after the meal. If i'm going above 160-180... I cut my portion or avoid that food. The less you spike after a meal, the fewer the complications. A typical meal would be meat, salad, cheese, hard boiled egg, greek yogurt without sugar, berries.

People tend to over complicate and over medicate while simple lifestyle changes can improve and reverse many of the consequences of a "modern industrialized society" I would suggest you read Why We Get Sick by Ben Bikman,PHD and watch many of his videos also. He is one of the best metabolic researchers out there and you will find a whole network of other doctors who are figuring out the root causes of many of the conditions we suffer from. I am type II also.

I've had T1D for 58 years and have seen unbelievable changes in treatment. The first was home glucose monitoring in 1980, which changed everything. The second was reliable CGM several years ago. During all that time, beginning in 1963, a "cure" was 10 years away. I've come to see that as an empty promise, which I assume was stated to try and buck up Type 1 diabetics. At this point, I would definitely not take an immunosuppressive drug to reduce my insulin requirement by 92%. So, this may become a safe, viable therapy in time, but not in my lifetime. CGM keeps my A1c at 6.1, which is good enough for me.

      @puellanivis 2 ปีที่แล้ว +27

People keep pushing me for a pump, but I’m managing things pretty well with injections (I started at 36, so I don’t have the lifetime of being worn TF out), and my last A1c was almost borderline upper limit of the reference range. So, I’m fine. I was warned first thing that cures have been in the works any time now for decades, so I’ve never let my hopes get up. Also, I’m pretty insulin sensitive, so I barely use any insulin in the day. I have no problem going through 300 units of Lantus within the time limit, but I really can’t use _less_ Novorapid… I’m already throwing a bit out every 30 days.
I also would definitely not choose immunosuppressants for decreased insulin use… I just really don’t use much. And now that i live in the EU, I’m far less worried about “what if” or where my next dose is going to come from.

Duke University has an ongoing study of family members of T1D's to look for autoimmune markers before you develop full blown T1D. Myself and my children participated for years. If you showed autoimmune markers then they treated you to lower your immune response to prevent it from attacking your pancreas.

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes super late (almost 30 years old. I actually hear this is becoming more common). My blood sugars were relatively normal until summer of 2018 (I was 28). I started to feel so sick and lethargic. I lost 20 pounds without trying over the course of 1-2 months and knew something was seriously wrong. I had blood work done at a clinic at my job and my A1C was 14.6. I ended up going to my doctor not long after and she ran more blood work and sent it to a lab to see if I really had type 1. Sure enough the markers were there and I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in November of 2018. It has been a rocky road but I’m staying positive and hoping for a cure one day. To my type 1 family, I love you and hope that one day soon we can make our own insulin again. ❤️

Every one if different but you, your family and your daughter could substantially reduce the impact of it on your lives to the point it's almost an afterthought. Interestingly some of the same change that make this possible work for both T1D and T2D. I'm happy to point you to some of the doctors etc who have done work in this direction to help you out. I have no "dog in this fight" so I have nothing to gain by this. I just want to help, if you are interested.

Their is a cure for diabetes is not an auto immune problem, it's mycotoxins in your blood stream fungus mold is pushing up your pancreas that shut off your insulin reseptures that's what it is, many doctors now teach this, but many still believe is an auto immune problem, this is crap and a lie, I was once diabetic and I'm no longer diabetic I reversed it by a book called thefunguslinktodiabetes by Dr mark holland and Doug, you learn not to eat bread no cheese no mayo mustard and pickles they put contaminated vinegar in those products eat blueberries and raspberries and grapefruit and granny smith apples, no peanuts or peanut butter no corn, get on chromium picnolonate,be careful it lowers blood sugar but it also kills the bad bacteria around your pancreas, work with your doctor, until your off your insulin, do the phase one diet in the book religiously I hope I made your day, God bless.

What if i exercise and what about after if i eat this or that..?' If i'm ever cured that will never leave me. People think its about not eating donuts etc., if only that were true. The pancreas is an organ of the digestive system and endocrine system of vertebrates.
In humans, it is located in the abdomen, behind the stomach, and functions as a gland.
The pancreas is a mixed or heterocrine gland, i.e. it has both an endocrine and a digestive exocrine function.
99% of the pancreas is exocrine and 1% is endocrine.
As an endocrine gland, it functions mostly to regulate blood sugar levels, secreting the hormones insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide.
As a part of the digestive system, it functions as an exocrine gland, secreting pancreatic juice into the duodenum through the pancreatic duct.
This juice contains bicarbonate, which neutralizes acid entering the duodenum from the stomach; and digestive enzymes, which break down carbohydrates, proteins and fats in food entering the duodenum from the stomach.
Inflammation of the pancreas is known as pancreatitis, with common causes including chronic alcohol use and gallstones.
Because of its role in the regulation of blood sugar, the pancreas is also a key organ in diabetes mellitus.
Pancreatic cancer can arise following chronic pancreatitis or due to other reasons, and carries a very poor prognosis, as it is often only identified after it has spread to other areas of the body.
The word pancreas comes from the Greek πᾶν (pân, “all”) & κρέας (kréas, “flesh”).
The function of the pancreas in diabetes has been known since at least 1889, with its role in insulin production identified in 1921.

While each case is highly individual, one can eat sugar just as a normal person can, as long as you know your body and how it will react, how much insulin you need for x amount of carbs etc. Other than that it’s just like with any other person: too much sugar isn’t healthy, obviously, again, just like with any other person.

@@markross7385 My friend, our bodies make glucose on their own… T1Ds need insulin, and without it, we will will still die even on a “carnivore diet“. And no, I’m not some vegan or vegetarian getting mad at you for suggesting I should eat meat.
I have used a heavy-meat keto diet before to reduce insulin necessity early on, and still regularly eat a bunch of meat with no side as my primary meal.
And yet, even on days where I inject zero fast insulin, I’m still injecting 16 units of 24h insulin, because again, as noted above: the body makes its own glucose.

I had a friend in Calgary who about 20 years ago had a pancreas implant of beta cells into his defunct pancreas (like me he was a type 1 diabetic). He was doing really well for about a year and was relieved that he was having a "normal" life. It was the anti rejection drugs which did him in near the end of his life. After 40 years I am staying on insulin with the huge help of my cgm device.

Like they said, I have been told 5 years every 5 years for 23 years since I was 12. I hate to be that guy, but I will believe it when I see it (and qualify for it). As a consultant I also do not know many business actively trying to put themselves out of business. Which is what the major insulin companies would be doing with a cure.

I have been a T1D for 20 years, since I was a kid. The grim reality I that even with these advances, cutting edge therapies and advancements are not an option for most people due to cost. I have "good insurance" and I still can't afford the cgm that my endocrinologist prescribed for me. Even with the bare necessities for living with diabetes, my costs exceed $200 a month and with the cost of living ever increasing, adding on things like a cgm, which for me would be an additional $200/month is just not an option. Want to make advancements?? Give us something EVERYONE can afford.

I use so much less insulin and have virtually no hypoglycemia. He recommendations keep blood sugars much more stable and less difficult to manage.
Needing less insulin means less to buy.
I eat 2 meals a day, sometimes 1, (no snacks) and intermittent fast the rest of the day.
I use glucose tabs to micro-tweak blood glucose on occasion.
Food cravings drop when blood sugars are normalized and stable.

      The Cure
There are many healthy pure things that will keep ones mind and body clean, keeping one from signing its will over to a insurance company and practitioner for the security of misery. An its influencing socialist drugs will not clear its blemishes from its practice, doubt or rebellious behavior from the pure, it feeds the fire, giving the host control , while taking its time, time an energy an money, who bank on it, charging one interest. But will to live, will for life, will for virtue; will open the hearts of others to one. And with the words the sick will be cured. Many think they are beyond the basic needs of a baby , but their not far from the adult. For there's an exercise and passage for peace and rest, whom rest with peace, investing into its health, not an insurance company for profit. Power is in self control, and fasting incereases it, an its energy and consciousness at no cost. ...

I did six clinical trials for CGM's and I learned about how these companies have to jump thru many hoops to get the systems or drugs approved by the FDA. That is why R&D costs are so high. Also you need the guinea pigs (me) to allow them to use you as a test subject. For example I had an IV in my hand for 12 hours and the nurses would raise my BS and test my blood then lower my BS and test my blood. All the while I had two CGM's attached one blind and the other real. It was amazing to see the hoops that the staff had to jump thru on each blood draw. There were about 15 staff members per trail. Anyway I would sign up for the Vertex clinical trail if they offered it to me.
