I'm so happy you addressed that you don't have to wear clothes out of your comfort zone in order to love your body! When I was recovering from my ED and embracing my body I thought I wasn't doing it "right" because I wasn't willing to wear clothes I just didn't feel comfortable in. My closet now reflects that I am a comfort queen😅
I think it’s great that you’re showing the less glamorous side of thrifting. I think it can be really demotivating to people when they don’t find great items on their first attempt! This shows that even youtubers strike out sometimes.
That landfill mystery brand being like "we're not here to be trendy or cute, we're here to ask you to spend an absurd amount of money on outdated clothes and not complain about it."
I purchased from that same brand before, and I personally really enjoyed their box of tie-dye tees. 😊 I did notice the sweatshirts I got felt smaller than they should've for the size I purchased, though. Turns out the company resizes them so they can have a standard across the board for sizing. Pretty ridiculous when a 3xl hoodie (for room and comfort, wanting a longer fit too) fits like a small 2x haha. So yeah. Not all bad, was a fun try one time.
Zara has really bad plus sizing. Different garments are sized up inconsistently, so you can't even figure out what your store size is. I have to try on everything so online shopping with them is practically impossible. I've largely given up on Zara.
Vintage denim sizing is dramatically different to modern sizing. An AE 16 is a vintage Levi’s 20/22 so I completely ignore size tags and just use waist and hip measurements. There’s also a lot of styles made for smaller waist/bigger hips (like 550s, which is my preference) so it’s an adventure for sure.
Sizes have gotten bigger and bigger as Americans have gotten bigger and bigger. I think it’s called “vanity sizing” but yeah, I don’t even bother with thrifting online because sizes are so unreliable (and I’m not a known TH-camr who can easily resell items on my Poshmark, sadly lol)
It definitely has changed over the years. My bffs grandma gave me a pair of her vintage jeans and they are a 16. I'm between a 6 and 8 normally and the 16 fit me perfectly.
Carrie - I whole heartedly appreciate the realism of this video! I’ve been on my own journey with finding clothing that fits my body and makes me feel comfortable, and you’ve definitely played a role in that. Thank you for always being so vulnerable. You are such a breath of fresh air 💜 I hope you have a lovely day!
A lot of the jeans you show were definitely vintage and a vintage size 16 is no where near a today's size 16. I wear a 24-26 (0-2) in today's sizing. And I tried on a vintage 90s pair of shorts in a size 28 and I couldn't even button them. You will probably need a vintage size 20-24 for the correct fit
@@annettetaylor8992 For awhile some influencers were going crazy with Marilyn Monroe and her being size 10-14, but in today's sizing I think she'd be between 0-6
@@luqicharmz Trouble with that is women's bodies vary a lot more. So different brands cater to different fits. It's a pain but at least I know H&M trousers ain't never going to fit my hips but others might be more suited to my curvier shape.
I love that little satin cami. I'm wondering if you could alter it. I'm not a seamstress, but maybe slit it up the back and add a ribbon or something to make it lace up? Add a cute bralette underneath. 🥰
Vintage shopping tip: vintage sizing is around 2 sizes smaller than modern sizes, that's why those size 16 don't fit because they are more of a 12. Hope that helps 🙂
Doesn't even have to be super vintage. I was a 3 or 5 in high school (graduated 2003) and am about 30lbs heavier and 4-5in larger in bust, waist and hip measurements and wear a 4 or 6 now. I've tried on old pants that I still had for some reason in a 3 or 5 and most don't go over my butt and if they do they are not buttoning.
Yeah this is why I like to get vintage denim from reliable sellers on Ebay because they actually measure the waists. Bonus if they do free returns lol, just in case. For me its worth to pay a little more than I would in a charity shop if I'm guaranteed a good fit because there a big difference between my waist and my hips, my thighs are quite muscular too, so a couple times I've bought a pair of jeans in the correct waist size but they won't go over my thighs lol. Actually the last time that happened they weren't even vintage, it was a pair of jeans I bought secondhand that were originally from Asos... 👀
@@Turtlelover555 I have some vintage denim very similar to those and I think the look was to have them fitted at the waist and a bit looser on the leg. Where as hers looked snug to the leg. But also I wear mostly vintage clothing and something I have def noticed about 60s/70s clothes at least is that a lot of them are cut for a very hourglass body. So those pants could just be cut for someone with a very different shape. Womens sizing is such an odd game.
This was so needed. purchased 2 pair of size 16 jeans this weekend, one was swimming on me, the other was ridiculously small.... thanks for the laugh 😂
Hi Carrie! About those LEE jeans you have; one of my favorite things to do with 100% cotton jeans if they don’t fit totally (even if they don’t button) is to spray the areas that are tight/uncomfy with water and let them stretch to accommodate your body and then slowly get them to button and do the same process over and over until they’re on and then let them dry COMPLETELY while they’re on you, it will create a perfect fit (I do this all the time with 100% cotton jeans from Walmart)
that mystery box thrift brand has a good idea but the problem is they charge more than an actual thrift store would. it's like the bins but you have to pay 10 times and also don't know what you're buying.
Definitely agree on that point. If the price was more reasonable, then I don't think anyone should have a right to complain. If the company literally said "these items are going to go in the landfill" then I'm sorry but what do you expect? These are probably items that got picked up at the goodwill bins by the pound and then resold. Also, just saying that those Earth shoes might be "dated" but I guess I personally like my 2010 fashion but I still wear peep toe shooties. And if they are genuine Earth brand than those shoes aren't some Target cheapo brand, you'd probably be able to Poshmark them for some money back.
I can honestly say I never trust the sizes on vintage jeans. I have to size up so much to get them to fit because it either fits my waist but hit my thighs or vice versa. But definitely never get your actual size in them. I’m sorry they didn’t work though because the wash is perfect
Just want to comment and say that I haven’t worn jeans in about 10 years but watching your channel made me feel inspired and I used your videos to dive back into the world of Jean shopping and I got myself 3 new pairs. I’m pretty happy with all of them, all thanks to you and your videos!
I love that you show us that it doesn't just all go great all the time and that one can regret buying something, or that one doesn't have to force themselves into clothes that make one uncomfortable etc... It really feels like a big sis talking to us 🥰
Can you please do a size chart vs intuition / regular size? I think it’d be interesting to see what the size chart recommends vs what size you think you should get
All of these bust issues have been my issue with all clothing since I was about 13. I was a C cup at age 13 and VERY FULL bust and since then, 12 years later, I'm now an E cup. Even if I see a shirt I like that's an XL I have to try it on because most of the time any buttons on it or if the material has no give I can't even try to get it on. I feel so you deeply on that level.
You're adorable! I feel like so many youtibers who make videos like these have to have a certain personality for me to watch without feeling like I'm playing a broken record. You're so fun to watch!
When buying vintage go up sizes and I reccomend never buying unless the seller lists measurements - particularly a measured waist size! You still have some misses but definetly less.
I always feel guilty when clothes don’t fit me, and I have the same fitting issues that you pointed out of things being too tight in the stomach or chest and this video really help me feel less insecure and guilty about clothes not fitting me.
Thank so much for showcasing this, Carrie! I’ve had some recent fails in the start of my thrifting journey and this made me feel so much better about it. I appreciate you 💖

That pyjama top though 🤩🤩🤩 I've had a few thrift fails. Recently I bought a beautiful button down skirt off ebay, too tight. I could get it in but it was not doing anything for me. So I sewed up the button front and sewed a zip in the back with some extra fabric each side. It's not a professional job, but I can wear the skirt 🤷🏻♀️

I loved seeing all your fails. It makes me not get as frustrated trying to thrift. I think I get more fails than wins. Fun fact: I still own a pair of “unlisted” shoes from the early 2000s and the sole lining did the same thing. However, I love them and am hoping the cobbler can fix them.
Great video! I've gotten to the point where I either only buy from listings that include measurements or I ask the seller for measurements. I won't look at size charts for a brand because we know how much it can vary from item to item and for used clothes, it doesn't account for potential alterations or shrinking from improper care. It's saved me money and peace of mind. BTW, that's outrageous for used shoes, especially when you have no idea what you'll be getting. It might be different if they only sold higher end items.
Firstly the shirt in the intro... rich in colour rich in life😍 secondly, as another woman who is 5ft 9 I’m unable to shop at zara. Idk why all their clothes are soooooo short!
Ooo I wear a ton of vintage clothes and I’ve found that I generally have to go up by two sizes in vintage! Hopefully this can help you in your endeavors to find vintage pieces in the future!
The best advice I ever got was to measure clothing that I already have that I love the fit of and use that when comparing measurements to thrifted clothing, bring a measuring tape with you or ask the seller for these measurements
The orange shirt is EVERYTHING 🥰 I forget how old you are, but when (or if you already are) in your 30's you're gonna be one of those super pretty effortlessly stylish women I'm jealous of 😍
So relatable!! If I were you I’d keep those LEE jeans! I always have a hard time letting go of those cool vintage finds, even if they don’t fit my body at the moment
You look so so so pretty in this video! You always look beautiful, but there was an extra glow to your skin and your hair looks so good! AND that shirt (I remember when you got it and I hoped you would keep it) was styled so well with the gold necklace and little bit of exposed. Love it!💗
Does the UK brand Marks and Spencer exist in USA? They have one of the best ranges of jeans. Long, regular, short. Slim, skinny, mom, boyfriend. Stretch, non stretch. High, mid, low rise. Black through all the blues to grey and white. A pair for every body type and really affordable (from £19.50 to £39.50). The sienna are my top favourite. Good stretch, high rise. Comfy. No gaping at the back. .
That animal print top, though... amazing! Also, as an L/XL girl myself, I'm amazed at how poorly the clothes are sized up. It's always a gamble, especially if you have wider shoulders (like I do). If the shoulders are ok, then the waist is too wide and dumpy. If the waist is nice and snug, then the chest is constricted... and so on.
I love this! I think thrifting can be disheartening sometimes when you’re midsize (especially in the UK lol) so it’s nice to see that it’s not all good times and perfect fits 😂😂
There might actually be a way to fix your Lee jeans, I did it with a pair of thrifted Levi's 505 (but those had pretty brand new, stiff fabric): On a warm day!!! wash them and them put them on while they are still wet (I could only manage to put them on when they were SLIGHTLY wet because that feeling is bad). Then do some cleaning around the house, squats, especially just sitting down helped me, of course while doing so continue to try to close the button lol. After that day, my Levi's MOLDED to my body and are now the most comfy and flattering denim that ever existed.
As someone who loves thrifting online, this video was so relatable. I can think of so many times I loved an item so much but it just did not fit or look flattering on me.
Please tell me more about that orange top! I remember you featuring it in another video but I can’t recall the details. What brand is it, and what size are you wearing. I. LOVE. IT! Great video concept, btw!
There is such a huge difference about going to a 16 in a store that sells 0-18 or even 0-22, and a sixteen in an actual plus size only store. 16 is the most difficult size to fit in because is is the bridge between plus and regular sizes and everyone has their own interpretation of what that is. Also vintage clothes were smaller. what is a 0 today was a 3/4 back when I was a teen. The skinny girls wore 5's. a few really straight up and down skinny girls wore 3's. 0's didn't really exist. You can see it is sewing patterns. Junior's smallest size was a 6. I wore and 8 pattern, yet wore a size 5 dress and a size 9 jean....and I had to take in the waist on the jeans. My daughter with the same measurements wears a 3/4 in todays sizes.
Love this! I made a thrifting fails video at the end of 2020, kinda like a clip show, and had a laugh but also learned so much from my failures! 😆 still, I think I'll do one every year because sh** happens. Would definitely watch more of these from you in the future!
With Zara being a Spanish brand, their XL in the UK/EU at least is a UK14/US10 sadly! And they do run a little snug. I do wish brands would use numbered sizing, even if it's all a bit different on fit as at least you have some vague idea if it might fit. I'd also love if stores had measurement charts dotted about the store.
I have the same Zara dress in an XL and it fits exactly the same on me...it's going in the donate pile. I'm actually currently wearing an XXL zara dress with biker shorts as like a tunic top bc it's so short. Zara sizing is WILD and disrespectful lol
I bought that same Zara dress new and I LOVED it until I washed it once and it no longer fit my bust, and the length shrunk so much. So sad because it was so cute in theory!

oh my gosh, i absolutely love those jeans, the wash is beautiful!
Yessss! I swear I commented like, ten times, a “thrift fails/regrets” video and it’s finally here! 👏🏻
I love this video! It’s good to see that it doesn’t work out all the time. This is a realistic view on how thrifting goes
Firstly the shirt in the intro... rich in colour rich in life😍 secondly, as another woman who is 5ft 9 I’m unable to shop at zara. Idk why all their clothes are soooooo short!
Love that Cami! Just cut out a V in the front and put black lace behind it. Might give you enough space in the bust? Maybe?
Thanks for putting yourself out there. You are amazing ❤️
Ooo I wear a ton of vintage clothes and I’ve found that I generally have to go up by two sizes in vintage! Hopefully this can help you in your endeavors to find vintage pieces in the future!
I LOVE Shelley’s of London shoes and have thrifted several great pairs! Sucks that those didn’t work out
I'm glad I'm not the only one with fails.. Thanks for this!
Does anybody know where the green daisy cardigan is from? 🤩🤞🏻
Always size up in vintage sizing! A large fits similar to a small sometimes
I’ve had a ton of fails, but also I’ve had some awesome finds. It is what it is. Love this video.
You look so so so pretty in this video! You always look beautiful, but there was an extra glow to your skin and your hair looks so good! AND that shirt (I remember when you got it and I hoped you would keep it) was styled so well with the gold necklace and little bit of exposed. Love it!💗
I really think that last dress fits you very well!! :)
Carrie girl where on earth is the shirt from that you’re wearing in the intro????? I NEED
If the waist is nice and snug, then the chest is constricted... and so on.
You could probably have the bust on the silk top, taken out? Maybe the Lee Jeans too?
I love seeing the thrift fails!! I love the pajama shirt! You are so beautiful!! I love your hair!! 💖
As someone who loves thrifting online, this video was so relatable. I can think of so many times I loved an item so much but it just did not fit or look flattering on me.
I live in Israel so every time you upload a video it’s the end of the day for me so you always come at the best timeeee !!! Ily so much 🥰🥰
Please tell me more about that orange top! I remember you featuring it in another video but I can’t recall the details. What brand is it, and what size are you wearing. I. LOVE. IT!
Great video concept, btw!
Those Lee Jeans are vintage 90s. They don't really have any stretch...I had a pair similar to those in my size and had the same problem as you.
i LOVE the giant black shorts they look like a skort - so cute idk
The black shorts are worth a try to modify and wear, they look cute on you ❤️
I will take the first part of shoes if you don't want them. I LOVE earth shoes. My mid thirties feet also love them.
Carrie I don’t think you understand I NEED that purple flower print tank top!!! 😩😩
That silk slip top, I was thinking that looks really nice I don't see the issue...
Then you turn to the side 🤣
CARRIE! Please try the Levi’s 550 or 560 cut men’s jeans! They are the perfect fit for me and I can’t rave about the fit enough!
ok this look in the intro is EVERYTHING
With Zara being a Spanish brand, their XL in the UK/EU at least is a UK14/US10 sadly! And they do run a little snug. I do wish brands would use numbered sizing, even if it's all a bit different on fit as at least you have some vague idea if it might fit. I'd also love if stores had measurement charts dotted about the store.
Oh and vintage sizing, pre 90s you're going to want to size up at least once or twice as a general rule.
