Hello friends! Just to clarify, the Cobbit pipes shown in this video do have Italian acrylic stems. What are your favorite pipes in these price ranges? Let me know in the comments below!

Rossi pipes are at the higher price end of budget pipes, but that's probably because they are made by Savinelli. Like buying Polo or Chaps, both made by Ralph Lauren.

I always appreciate a good budget friendly workhorse pipe! My most smoked pipes are probably my Missouri Meerschaum bent Country Gentlemans, which even after the addition of a nice Forever Stem are still very inexpensive.
Outside of the Rossi and Morgan Bones pipes, the one other briar pipe I'd recommend in the $50 category is a Dr. Grabow Royalton. They're much higher quality than Dr. Grabow's other lines and feature nice thick briar with a gorgeous grain pattern and finish, and unlike all of Dr. Grabow's other pipes the stems on the Royaltons aren't cheap plastic; they're thick and beautiful lucite that's every bit as nice as any of the lucite stems on my $100+ Savinellis. It's hard to believe they're a $45 pipe, and I'd recommend a Dr. Grabow Royalton to anyone looking for a cool and dry smoking pipe that looks as good as it smokes and won't break the bank.

I have pipes from $ 3.99 to $ 120.00 and my favorite is the first pipe you showed. I reach for it 4 times more than any other pipe. But for me ( I am an HVAC technician) and I always keep the Missouri Meerschaum Eaton in my van at all times for a back up or if my hands are greasy. My second best smoker is the Dr Graybow Savoy. I treat myself on every Saturday with my Peterson but I don't find the tobacco tastes any better in that than my cobs or Dr Graybow's but there is something about smoking a high quality pipe once in a while. I have often pondered, as pipe smoker tend to to. Why is it that of all the pipes I have that I reach for off the wall or next to my chair to smoke the most often because I enjoy them the most are estate cobs that were part of group lots from EBay that I considered tossing in the bin but just put away. Because of circumstances my pipes went into storage during recuperation I found the antique cobs and was surprised how sweet they smoked. Then my old estate Dr Grabows, Medico, Yellobole, KBB, Kaywoodie pipes from the 1920s - 1960s get smoked more often than my higher grade factory and my few artision pipes get smoked. Much like Paladen Piper I love my Old Codger pipes.

My local shop carries pipes from a guy that sometimes sets up at a flea market. 45 dollars each and they are BEAUTIFUL. Extremely well made, and the one I got has a gorgeous caramel colored stem and a deep rose finish on the briar. Smokes incredibly. I only own a few pipes (mostly for rotation purposes, since I'm not really a collector), and it was time to retire my Dr. Grabow starter that I got almost 30 years ago and give it to a friend that was getting into smoking, so yeah, I jumped on that one.

I'm very happy you mentioned the Ropp marque. I believe we excluded the Ropp simply because of lack of experience with the Etudiant series. In general I love the Ropp offerings due to the classic French styling along with the lack of bowl coating and the use of vulcanite and horn stems. The Algerian Superior line is especially fine and I have many of them.

Kevin, so nice to see you again. Spot on, corncob is the way to go, especially for a new pipe smoker. Corncob is an affordable starter pipe and smokes great. I would buy myself a tin of high-quality tobacco, a cheap dollar-store lighter, a tamper, and some pipe cleaners. I could have it all for about 30-40 dollars and it would have been a high-quality experience. By the way, corncob will smoke dry and will naturally add some sweetness to the blend (after all, it is made of corn) when new which is likely going to improve the experience for a novice piper.
Recently I purchased a Gasparini, an Italian pipe shipped from Lithuania. Shipping costs are low and the pipe is made of briar with a saddle bit. Good brand but not popularized in America. Less than $50. Thank you for a lovely video🙂

@@hobbitonpiper A churchwarden stem has a good physical property that benefits as well. Since it is a long stem, physics requires less of a draw to pull the smoke. Think about as the same thing as a rifle. A longer barrel will get you more range with the same load than a shorter one. It also keeps the smoke out of your eyes. I broke my old stem, but am in a special state where I can't order one online. Going to have to travel to shop around. I've certainly had the opposite experience but I would mention that the lowest cost Rossi line does not accept a filter while many of the higher priced Savinelli and Rossi pipes do. I've found it important to utilize the insert to get them to smoke best. I would be very surprised if the lower cost pipe (Rossi in this case) underwent a better curing process. I think my favorite Savinelli pipes are the Punto Oro Gold line and they are undoubtedly well cured. I like them as much as some of the Savinelli Autographs I've had. I've probably owned over 100 Savinelli pipes over the years so I have a better statistical sample of them relative to Rossi. I doubt I owned ten Rossi pipes but I think they are clearly intended to be the Savinelli seconds. Perhaps if we could venture back in time to a day (pre-WWII) when they were separate companies the story would be different.

Fantastic Idea for a video Kevin. And very informative. In my more limited experience I've found Missouri Meerschaum corn cobs to be an excellent value for a budget pipe. I have a little of everything when it comes to pipes. I have learned not to put much consideration into the initial purchase price. I have bought some expensive pieces that are absolutely worthless.
I have learned to constantly evaluate what the current demands of my lifestyle are like. This should be considered before purchasing any pipe. What will I be doing with this pipe? And what am I getting out of it.
I am getting older. I put a high value on a light weight piece which isn’t going to wear out my jaws, and fit well in my hand. I can smoke slower and cooler, burning holes through my pipe is of little concern for me.
Lately, I find myself reaching for the cobs.

Kevin, Thanks for letting me be a part of this great video. I'm always surprised at the value of Missouri Meerschaums. I can't tell you how many times I've thrown a $4 MM Short Stop in my pocket (which we should have mentioned) for a quick 20-30 minute smoke. corncobpipe.com/product/natural-short-stop-corn-cob-pipe/ I know we excluded basket pipes from the list because of the knowledge required to select one that's good. Maybe we can talk about that at some point for our value conscious viewers.

About newbies I think that the first pipe should already be good, in order not to have nasty surprises and interrupt the new hobby that has just begun. If they don't offer top-level bargains I'd leave the basket pipes where they are. Rather a corn cob is preferable.

    • @hobbitonpiper

The better the pipe the better the experience. But for new pipers that are just learning the basics and mechanics (packing, lighting, tamping, cadence, “do I think I’ll even enjoy this?”) an inexpensive option is not a bad idea to consider, in my opinion.

As for my favorite Virginia so far, it has to be Peterson Flake! I got really lucky and received a 3 year old sealed tin in my first SmokingPipes order (along with a 2022 tin) and I found the aged tin to be incredible. I liked the fresh tin as well, but with a few years of age the flavors that I was looking for in a Virginia were even more evident and lovely. The last two years my son has been buying me Savinelli pipes for Christmas, Father's Day and my birthday he will tell me to pick out something and I go with a fully refurbished estate. My wife buys me estates as well. I have a very nice collection of vintage Kaywoodies and Dr. Grabows from the 1940s up to the early 1980s. Great video! Thank you! Are there any solid filtered pipe (activated charcoal filters) options close to $50 that you would recommend?

    • @russhicksart
      @russhicksart ปีที่แล้ว +4

That's a great question. Sadly the work required to make a quality stem that accepts a quality filter drives the price up. Of course many of the MM line do accept 6mm filters. The problem I've found is the plastic MM stems that accept the 6mm aren't formed to very exact standards. The higher quality charcoal 6mm filters (Savinelli and White Elephant, etc) are slightly too large to fit properly. I always ream them out slightly with sandpaper which only take few seconds. I prefer the 9mm filter pipes if you can find them. For a while there Rattray's had some 9mm filtered pipes that were very close to the $50 range, when on sale, but inflation has elevated the price point. The later versions of Rattray's have had the problem of allowing stain to corrupt the mortise and draft hole by employing the dip staining process. If you do get one with stain in it you should take the time to clean it out with Everclear and maybe even some sandpaper and/or a light 3-4mm round needle diamond file simply to get the airway back to bare wood.
