Favorite, and absolute best, model of the year has got to be the 1/48 Tamiya Vought F4U-1A Corsair, which I did up in the Big Hog choice of colors/decals. Got it for Christmas 2019; I assembled most of it by January, then it wound up in a box all year until the beginning of December when I finally got time to dive back into it. (Had a 1 y/o grow up real fast this year, took a lot of my modelling time away haha!) First aircraft model I've done since I was about 10 years old, two decades ago. Pretty dang happy with how it came out, if I say so myself
@@ModelMinutes Sadly that was the case for almost all my models this year. I managed to get a couple Gundam built (all snap together, pre-molded color), but in so far as the high(er) effort ones just was able to do the Corsair and a 1/35 Tamiya Sherman Easy 8
You have made many great kits in 2020 Matt. I love your RNZAF P-51 Mustang (also a huge thanks for the shout out in the build video) but nothing tops your Avro Lancaster. It goes to show you can get great result even with out the use of an airbrush. Plus the diorama for it was stunning too! Happy New Year Matt, hope 2021 will be a great year for you. Regards from Peter H -Shuttle Factory Scale Models-
I got the revell dam buster Lancaster kit for Christmas. It's only my third model since getting back into modelling after 55 years so going to take it nice and easy.
After I bought my first airbrush, I attempted to use my humbrol paints with various thinning methods but gave up eventually as it was too much hassle and didn't produce a very nice result. Recently, I've switched to tamiya XFs and they're fantastic. Thanks for the videos
I just started watching your videos as I received three starter sets the hurricane, spitfire and the bf 109 (that you painted). Your videos were a massive help, thank you so much.
I remember the Matchbox Pzkpfw II first time around - moulded in two colours. When you rescued the Lysander, how do you remove paint from plastic kits, without damaging the plastic?
I made a build video on the lysander, and also a tutorial on how to strip paint, if you want to check those out: Lysander build: th-cam.com/video/boKT7xIMtoY/w-d-xo.html Paint stripping tutorial: th-cam.com/video/xd5FwFlRrc8/w-d-xo.html
Here's a couple of tips on removing fragile parts from sprues: 1. Razor saw. 2. Using a clipper causes the plastic to push apart at the cutting edge as they squeeze through due to their wedge shape. Just as a wedge can exert a large force on a log when splitting, the wedge effect of the cutter edges puts a lot of force on the part. If the part is connected to the sprue on both ends, cutting one of the sprue gates will compress the part against the other which can break fragile parts. Sometimes you can get around that by first cutting the runner somewhere away from the actual part so the stress doesn't go into the part. Choose spots that will allow the part's sprue gates to be cut without causing pressure on the part. Sometimes all it takes is some thought on which sprue gate to cut first.
MishnO. I find your comment to be helpful. I broke the pilot's control stick on three 1/72 scale kits of WWII airplanes. In each case the piece was attached on each end, and the piece was in tension like a guitar string that had been tightened. In other words, there was a gate on each end of the stick, and a runner to each gate. Until I read your comment, I could not comprehend how I was breaking the (Airfix A6M2b starter kit with paint and cement) piece in the middle of the piece when I pinched / cut the runner on one side with sprue cutters. I did not realize that in so doing (the pinching action) was compressing the runner, and that the force was being transferred linearly from the runner to the gate to the piece. I just thought the piece was unusably brittle, especially when I did it again to another 1/72 scale Airfix A6M2b (paint and cement not included). I was stunned when I did the same thing to the kit of a different plane (Wildcat) made by a different manufacturer (Academy). I will take a closer look at the angle of the pinching / cutting ends of my sprue cutters. I am wondering if using "flush cutters" will solve my problem. One test is worth a thousand theories. I will take your advice and cut a good distance away (on runners at a 90 degree angle or the outer sprue frame) from the fragile piece to reduce tension on each end of the sprue piece, before I attempt to cut the runner within a 3/8 inch of the gate on each end of the piece.
I recall 'discovering' the Matchbox range of tanks in the mid seventies and being very impressed with the quality of the build plus they all came with a wee diorama base which really improved the static display of these models.
All the Original Matchbox kits are great. The only one I ever found to be a tricky build was the Seafox floatplane as the struts were fragile. I have at least 30 unbuilt Matchbox kits in my loft along with old FROG, Airfix etc kits probably in excess of 500 kits up there. Currently got a Matchbox Jagdpanther and Dornier Skyservant in build.
i have the Typhoon, just finishing building it now. its a great kit as you said. i think the best kit i made this year was the Revell 1/72 Yak 3. great fit and good detail.
I got the Airfix hawker typhoon IB starter set for Xmas and it is by far the best kit I’ve built! Funny enough it makes the first item of your list! Wish you a happy new year!
My best models of 2020 was the eduard mustang in 48 scale and with pe parts, for the first time I used them and it was challenging but very enjoyable. Also the eduard bf-109 in 48 scale with good fit and superb detail. Also I really liked the academy f-8 crusader, very good fit and good detail. Just bought the F-15C eagle from Tamiya on Christmas, happy new year Matt and everyone, happy modeling in 2021!
My 2020 build was a 1:350 Trumpeter HMS Dreadnought in the 1907 configuration. It was the first model I had built in years and my first time assembling photo-etch as well as my first use of airbrush. A valuable lesson in various techniques. Also, I did fair bit of research into likely colours and extras not included in the box.
I build 1/16 scale rc model tanks, but a lot of the techniques are shared with these models, I appreciate your weathering and attention to detail. Great info, thanks 👍🏻 .
As I'm getting on a bit old hands are not what they were so 1:72 scale is now a bit to small. So I upped to 1:48 min good for me. Any other scales spring to mind for different models you know armour construction plant? All advice happily accepted.
A Matchbox Panzer II! I love their range and always try to bag the Revell reissues whenever I can. I can thoroughly recommend the twin set French Char B at Renault FT17. Gorgeous kits and includes some beautifully detailed and moulded French infantry and tank commander figures.
I also built the same Panzer 2 kit this year and was very pleased with the final product. It's worth pairing it up with some 1/72 figures from the HAT range rather than the oversize figures included in the kit. Otherwise it's great value for the price and the diorama aspect really holds up after all these years.
Models are perfect!!! You work in 1:72 only? I work in 1:35 and 1:48 for armoured and planes...these are bigger and you can also see more detail.Congratulations for your video,i really enjoy it.A good year and happy modelling!

I just ordered the airfix typhoon starter kit and seeing it on your top 5 worst builds had me quite concerned at first. Glad I made a good choice for my second airfix!
My favorite kit i build in 2020 was the Revell Bf110 in 1/32 scale. This kit is a rebox from the 2008 Dragon kit but it only costs less then half of it, i scored mine for just over 50€:) You get the same plastic as in the Dragon kit but it comes without the little photo etch fret. The Decals (Cartograph, Italy) are better than the ones in the Dragon kit imho, very thin and nice finish. The Cockpit is so well detailed it could be a model in itself! The instrument panel is really crisp, has beautifully raised details and comes with a nice fitting decal. The panel lines are just right and the landing gear also is superb! The canopy is crystal clear and fairly thin. I upgraded it with some HGW seatbelts and photo etch buckles. If you like this plane and have some space for a bigger model you should definitely look out for this kit:)
if YOU hadn't guessed by now, my fave of your models is obviously the Lancaster 😂 my fave one that I did was 1:48 spitfire mk2 revell, keep it up matt!
My first kit build was an Airfix Typhoon, but in 1964. My father disapproved of the expense for something that did not fly. The dilemma of what to do with it when finished other than collecting dust also arose. Two years later my Dad gave me another kit which has approved of. A 1/24 scale Revell AC Shelby Cobra which was a fast slot car. Taught me a fair bit mechanically, electrically and competitively. Won a few races at local commercial slot car raceways during the slot racing boom years. Still have it. Body battered but mechanically still good.
That Revell Lanc is indeed a great kit but it has one major flaw. It lacks dihedral on the wings. The fix is fairly simple however. Assemble the wings but before you attach the engines use a razor saw to cut horizontally through from the top in the join just outboard of the inner engines from the TOP of the Wing. Go almost through the entire wing only leaving a small part on the lower wing attached. At about mid wing. Then just glue the wing back. That should give near enough the correct dihedral. DON'T use a hacksaw though as the blade is too wide. Incidentally the Lanc you modeled "Grogs the shot" went down the production line at AVRO Yeadon where My Grandma worked on the Lancaster assembly line.
sometimes i mask it with tape, but other times i will paint by hand and then use a cocktail stick (or similar) to scrape the paint away - that only works with acrylic though
I loved building airfix kits when I was a kid, now retired I fancy building models of my favourite five aircraft. The on BIG pain I recall from my childhood was keeping them clean, boy the got soooo dusty. I used a small household paintbrush but any tips?? If the gather dust my wife will veto my stepping back into my childhood!!!😂😂😷
I think the starter kit challenge is pretty cool and after watching your video I kinda wanna see if I can take on the challenge too, I'm only started watching your videos a few days ago so I'm a little late to the party here
My best of 2020? Hell I've only finished 2 kits this yr and both are OV-1 MOHAWKS built for a friend. However I've been working on the trumpeter 1/48 DKM Type VIIC U-boat. I've gotten 5 of the six compartments done and started on the sixth one. Painted and modified over 30 figures, added loads of details even scratch built some items. It's a massive kit and I am sure the biggest model I'll ever build.
It's been a long time side I built any model kits, but lockdown has got me thinking... Is the grainy finish on the Typhoon due to the airbrush? - thanks, great video
@@ModelMinutes It probably needed more thinning. If the paint isn't thin enough it dries in the air and leaves that sandpaper finish. Practice, practice, practice.
My favourite kit this year (or my 1st year to be accurate) was the Tamiya Panzer II in 1/35, a great budget larger scale kit, highly recommended and my first in that scale. Would love to build a Typhoon or a Tempest, my favourite WW2 fighters/ground attack planes.
A quick search, it seems you haven't tackled the 1/24 Typhoon? Cliche, I know, but definitely my best ever model. Built it in 2018. I also did the same ME109 that you feature here, in the same colour and decal scheme. A lovely little kit. Now, if only our government would allow import of models, I would be doing the 1/24 Hellcat.
@@ModelMinutes Thanks for the reply! Modelling in South Africa is a bit pricey, eg the Typhoon cost me 2500 in 2018, the Hellcat would be about 3 grand. I could buy online, but 50 pounds shipping equates to another 1000 in our currency! A pretty big ouch for a (young at 61!) pensioner with an unemployed wife due to Covid...Maybe in 2021, he said hopefully!
Hey Matt, could you try build one of the Revell space shuttles as I would love to watch this the orbiter alone is about £19.00 for the kit and I think the one with booster rockets is currently £30.00 they both DO NOT include paint(these are the Amazon prices)
My best model of 2020 would have to be the Heinkle He110-H6 in 1/72. It was my first time using enamel pain, but I think it still turned out very well.
That Lanc is beautiful. I would like to build a Lanc, a Halifax, a B-17 and a B-24 one day. Though the Lancaster and B-17 are in plenty supply the Halifax and B-24 are rather hard to find.
Soft plastic that figures are molded with is much like vinyl if it is not vinyl. It needs acrylic primer then other paints will go on better. However the soft material will still bend & crack paint so they are fragile. Good job though. The Lancaster looks great. I am left curious of the Humbrol issues.
Have you seen some old swedish planes like the saab j21 saab j35 or saab 210. They are very uniqe. I can not tell you if theese kits are actually good because I am to new to this hobby to rate them and I have only built one of them. I just think you will find theese planes interesting. Also we had a lancaster with a jet engine mounted on the bottom but I don't think there are any kits of that plane.
@@ModelMinutes we also had some planes that were not as uniqe but still cool (in my opinion) like the j32 lansen wich looks a bit like a hunter. We also had some imported and lisence built planes like the j28 vampire, j33 venom, j34 hawker hunter, j26 mustang and s31 spitfire. My personal favorite is the saab 37 viggen.
@@ModelMinutes It is a Challenge but Its worth it. You have to put 8 grams in a 1 cm3 nose to get the balance right. That was the biggest Challenge but i Got it

It's been a long time side I built any model kits, but lockdown has got me thinking... Is the grainy finish on the Typhoon due to the airbrush? - thanks, great video
Yes, it is, the humbrol paint was not good. I recommend that you check out my build video on that to find out how it went
Thanks for the idea :D
Happy new year Matt!
Happy new year!
Hey buddy, just got a cheap (ish) airbrush what paint would you recommend?
I prefer acrylic - vallejo model air is a good range
Very fond memories of the Westland Lysander - it was one of my early experiences of Model building in the 1970's ... still looks good today!
Yes, I've been following the restoration of one on instagram
For painting the soft plastic figures, paint them first with a diluted PVA glue then when that's dry apply paint.
Thanks for the tip!
Did you ever do the RAAF 3 Sqn Mustang?
From the aftermarket decal sheet? Not yet
@@ModelMinutes cool. Don't want to miss it. Just acquired an RC Mustang I'll be putting into Aussie livery. Thanks.
@@jeffkeith637 Very cool!
Absolutely love it especially the Panzer.
Thanks!
1/24 scale kits tend to be a bit of a financial and time commitment, as I earn more from this hobby i'm sure it will eventually feature
For the airbrush, Airfix acrylics work great with tamiya thinners.
yeah, i tried them, but some of those paints are really grainy and not great
Have you done the yak 38 ? Because its a Russian vtol jet like the harrier and its technology used in the f 35
I haven't built one of those
Great video my friend have a great new year to you and your family 🙏🙏
Thank you! You too!
Happy New Years Matt!
Happy new year!
A great year👍 lovely builds mate🍺
Thanks 👍
Happy new year MATT!!!!
Happy new year!
Hey Matt, could you try build one of the Revell space shuttles as I would love to watch this the orbiter alone is about £19.00 for the kit and I think the one with booster rockets is currently £30.00 they both DO NOT include paint(these are the Amazon prices)
Thanks for the suggestions!
My best model of 2020 would have to be the Heinkle He110-H6 in 1/72. It was my first time using enamel pain, but I think it still turned out very well.
Awesome!
Happy new year Matt good luck in life 🎄
Happy new year!
That Lanc is beautiful.
I would like to build a Lanc, a Halifax, a B-17 and a B-24 one day.
Though the Lancaster and B-17 are in plenty supply the Halifax and B-24 are rather hard to find.
Models for those aircraft do exist, but some of them might be a little old
I'd love to see you do the dday diorama that comes with that hawker typhoon
Thanks for the suggestion!
Great choices ! I would have ranked the mustang and boaty thing ! ( lcvp) higher but thats just me. Keep up the good work 👏
Thanks! Will do!
Soft plastic that figures are molded with is much like vinyl if it is not vinyl. It needs acrylic primer then other paints will go on better. However the soft material will still bend & crack paint so they are fragile. Good job though. The Lancaster looks great. I am left curious of the Humbrol issues.
thanks for the info!
I would agree ! That was my favourite build also this year .
:D
Have you seen some old swedish planes like the saab j21 saab j35 or saab 210. They are very uniqe. I can not tell you if theese kits are actually good because I am to new to this hobby to rate them and I have only built one of them. I just think you will find theese planes interesting. Also we had a lancaster with a jet engine mounted on the bottom but I don't think there are any kits of that plane.
Thanks for the info! Sounds like cool aircraft
@@ModelMinutes the saab j21 is a pusher prop wich is quite uniqe, the saab j35 has very uniqe dubble delta wings.
@@alfepalfe sounds cool!
@@alfepalfe Very nice! Maybe in the future i'll get some of those
My best kit I built was the revell 1:72 F14D super tomcat The build was great and I improved my skills greatly with it
Sounds pretty cool!
Nice builds, looking forward to many more. How about some 1920s and 30s pre-war kits?
Thanks for the suggestion! I've got an airfix Hawker Demon in the stash waiting to be done
@@ModelMinutes 1/72 or 1/48, that sounds cool. The British built some of the most beautiful biplanes in the early to mid 30s... Cheers!
@@richardbreisch8049 it’s in 1/72, I’ve got an unboxing on it somewhere....
@@ModelMinutes Sounds fantastic! Thanks.
Any one remember way back in the early 1960's when a few model kits included (or sometimes you put it together) a small electric motor?
I remember seeing adverts for the airfix 1/24 planes having motors- actually, i think you can still get those
@@ModelMinutes It might of been the "Lindberg Line" of models.
@@michelezeszutko9933 Can't say i've had any experience of those
Happy New year year
Happy new year
🎉🎆🎇2021🎇🎆🎉
Thanks for all of the good videos in 2020
Thanks for watching!
When I paint canopies it is giving me a headache I just can’t get that straight line and it is stressing me out
Have you tried masking with tape?
@@ModelMinutes yes
@@Oh.eidkxke2kekdj hmmm, scrape away any messy areas using a cocktail stick? Only works with acrylics though
@@ModelMinutes ok thanks
My best kit of the year was Airfix Douglas Dakota mk 3 with willy jeep.
Nice! I've got that one in the stash somewhere
For 1/72 armor, I recommend "Tiger Model," "Dragon Model," "Academy," and "Zvezda."
Thanks!
Don't forget the new kid on the block... Vespid. Just incredible.
My best so far was F-4J Phantom 2 by Revell in 1:72. Sadly, I chose wrong paint color so it turned out not very accurate as it should.
who cares if it was accurate, the main thing is that you had fun!
Very inspiring. I think I'll try the Messerschmittt starter kit.
Good idea!
I loved building the airfix typhoon too. I then built 2 others by academy and hobby boss but the airfix is the best I think 👍
I built the old airfix typhoon, but the new one is in a different league
My. Best kit was probably the airfix 1/72 scale Curtiss tomahawk I did on my old channel
That is a cool model :D
Not quite enough Airfix in there. Nice builds.
Haha! Thanks
The landing craft should of came with least crew and then also company could sell a add on kit to go with it to have a full troop
That would be a great idea!
There's another version of the LCVP3 kit that comes with a Sherman tank. I built that one back in the '70s. I remember it as being pretty good.
Nice selection..
Thanks a lot
I have this Avro Lancaster 😍 i will try my best to complete it.
Good luck!
I think the best kits I built this year were Airfix's 1/24 Typhoon and Eduard's Spitfire LF Mk.IX
Yes, having seen the Typhoon you did an amazing job!
Happy NYE
Its the new year now :/ but thanks
And you!
My best ones have to be the Airfix dogfight double with the Mig 17 and a 4 and the Airfix 1:600 HMS victorious
Awesome!
The Matchbox Sherman Firefly useful to be a good kit to build
Cool!
Badger Air Brush makes a primer paint to overcome "striation" on 3d printed stuff "3D Primer" aptly named, have a google. 👀
Thanks! I'll certainly be looking that up :D
Awesome!
Thank you! Cheers!
YOU DID A GREAT JOB ON ALL OF THE
CHRIS FROM OHIO
Thanks! :D
I used to love the matchbox models
they do seem pretty cool
Yep and they were cheap enough for kids their Halifax ,wellington and Lancaster bombers were great models too.
I made a mistake and bought the revel G1
:/
can't go on live since I have practice
No worries
Great models..
Thank you! Cheers!
Revell 1/72 ov-10 bronco
Worth getting?
@@ModelMinutes It is a Challenge but Its worth it. You have to put 8 grams in a 1 cm3 nose to get the balance right. That was the biggest Challenge but i Got it
