  • Team Florida Man takes home 1st place honors after two hard days of diving. 2,403 were removed by our team and this marks the most lionfish removed by a single team in any single derby. Thank you to all organizers, sponsors and participants for making this a great event!

Thanks for all of your efforts. The only good thing about Lionfish is that they don't spook and swim away.

For a 3 day event.......The record still stands for a single team of 4 divers on a single day tournament at 1399 taken in less than 7 hours.

The beach hotels in the places affected by these fish should offer discounts on rooms for people that remove lionfish. Something like 2 bucks a fish up to 10 of them per room per night and it could also be a tax write off for the hotels if the government got on board.

It is important to know that predators like moray eels and other sharks can also learn to eat these fish and leave them some wounded so that they learn to eat them too, the small ones should be eliminated. important to leave some injured so that other fish get used to eating them

That’s a lot of fish but it’s not really making a dent lionfish are prolific breeders and with no natural predators you would have to do about 100x that number to quell the lionfish population

I'm curious... why bag them all... In the interest of eradication, wouldn't it be easier to just kill them and let the reef clean them up? I imagine you'd get rid of more of them that way or is there enough demand to eat/sell them?)

The poor misunderstood lionfish. It was just seeking better life far from its war thorn home. It brought so much cultural enrichment to the privileged reef dwellers. Why would you murder them like this? Lionfish lives matter!
