Wow, wow, wow, wow. I followed your directions to a "T". Even used the same brand of shower curtain. You can't even see the projector through this set up. It looks like a professional screen. THANK YOU for taking the time to not only research this, but to put it up on TH-cam.
I'm the opposite of a religious person, a die hard atheist but I admire the community work you do and thanks for the tech advice, I will definitly use it!
Thank you for the kind words. Ever in the Syracuse NY area, do look me up (imperfect church DOT com) - would love to meet up for coffee or lunch or something while you are in town! Full respect on your "die hard atheist" position - and thankful for your respect of mine. I'm sure we'd enjoy a great conversation over coffee if we ever get the chance. Sincerely.
THANK YOU for saving me time and frustration. The internet is decidedly disorganized about this subject and your generous sharing solved things in 5 minutes. Best of luck to you and Good bless.
Thanks - I'm so glad others are getting to use it - especially churches and those serving their communities with little more than nickels & dimes to work with. Really appreciate the encouragement - thank you!
@pilanceboil Three projectors, ProPresentor is the software, TripleHead2Go is the hardware, and Final Cut Pro (with Compressor) is the editing software used to make the ultra wide aspect ratio for the videos. Here's a blogpost I created to detail answer questions like this. Any questions after reading through it, let me know. Did this years ago, but will do my best to remember / answer questions. :) diyrearprojectionscreen.blogspot.com
My man! This is so cool...I just bought the shower curtain suggested as I'm setting up some projection stuff for the upcoming holidays (ghosts for halloween, Santa's workshop for Xmas, Jesus coming of the tomb for Easter). Gotta build a PVC pipe telescoping "screen" and raise it 15-18 feet for our large window at entrance to our house and project from the second floor inside.... so I'm hoping it works. Projector angle is perfect (just tested tonight) Either way..Thank you and many blessings to you, your family and church. God Bless :) I love DIY stuff!
Thank you - I'm a wargamer and have been trying to work out how to build digital tables to play games on - this is the solution I've been looking for to help my local club look a bit more futuristic :)
Wanted to post a follow up. I made a screen like you did and used it the other night. In comparison to the cheap sheet I normally use, there was a couple of noticeable differences. One was the edge of projection, even though was black, didn't show as much on curtain as does sheet. I don't always use full screen so that can be a plus. Second and more importantly, the curtain gave a nice image when standing straight on, but diminished significantly when moving a few feet from center line.
I've done a similar thing myself. What I did to help the black level, is to add a sheer black curtain in front of the screen. The only caution I would add is that sometimes this can cause a moiré effect that produces a weird patter.. One fix is to defocus the projector a bit. Another fix is to use the fabric on the diagonal. But, this method reduces the size of the screen you can create without seams. One other thing I did for one event, was to use sheer WHITE curtains that had a pattern to them. When lit from the front, this both helped hide the stuff behind them, and when lit from the front, it made them look more interesting ,, and more like a regular curtain. As long as there is no light hitting the front of the curtain, it will tend to look black when you turn off all the lights and only have the rear projection on.
From one New Yorker to another, great job! Loved your sense of humor during your explanation to your congregation. I was planning to use the frosted shower curtain as a Halloween window display. I did not think about using duct tape for the edges or grommets. While my display don't need an edge, it's something to help string it up Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome. Thanks for the kind words. Just jumped on your youtube page - you've got a great voice man! Wish you lived near me, I'd recruit you to sing with our worship team - we need a male singer! :-) And... I watched you other video on parenting - sorry to hear about your wife. I can't imagine. I don't know you, but you are my brother. Know I will be praying for you over the course of this next month - just... because I feel led to. Ever in Syracuse NY - look me up. Would love to meet you in person. Sincerely.
Thank you Pastor Mark! Since then God has blessed me with an anointed woman of God who I would like to call my Ruth. If I am ever in NY I would love to worship with you from one servan'ts heart to another!!!!
Wow. thank you.I had never thought to use a shower curtain. IIRC they only frost one side of the curtain and I'm confident it's a perfect image. My first projector should arrive today in the post. Going to Target to pick up a shower screen now!!
THANK YOU SO MUCH - I used the exact brand of "Frost" shower curtain. Just set up a test behind my front window for doing Halloween decorations (we're projecting a close-up of an eyeball) - it looks marvelous, and I didn't even need to steam/straighten the curtain - just hung it relatively flat. I'm using an Optima short throw projector (GT760A) with it.
I'm also working with PIXELflex at the moment for my city funded installations. Each screen is $17000 per screen or $1000 a day rental. When the financing is not there, I use whatever I can find: vintage screens/ light painted walls/ sides of buildings etc... and now hopefully 3DpastorCOM screens.
What a great tip. Shower curtains - genius. I personally found that a white shower curtain provided better results than the frosted type - but my environment was different (home cinema).
I've used Tyvex (House wrapper) and it worked great for us but NOT for rear projection. In the rear, you did see the reverse image but of course you had the stores promo and product logo. Framed it with 1 1/2 inch black PVC, rope and gromets. Nice video, thanks
Thanks for the kind words! The projectors are BENQ SH910 - they are DLP projectors. Not "cheap" but certainly not "high end" either - but, what we can afford / meets our needs as a church.
Thanks for the kind words! Yes, 3 separate projectors. Don't know the exact model of the projectors, nothing special though, just 3 we had at the church. Not ultra short throw or short throw, just regular projectors. Think they were like $1500 or so apiece - so not the cheapest but by no means the most expensive. Just ones we got to use in various rooms in our church.
I've been looking into building a screen for the purpose of shooting video for a band, with images in the background, so this is inspirational. The three screen look never even crossed my mind, so thanks for that idea. I was thinking slightly larger though, so was considering some frosted polythene sheeting. Great video! Thanks.
thanks for the tip, or helped a lot. I bought a shower curtain liner from the dollar tree. my guess is its not as strong as what you used, but mine is used only once a year for Halloween. some day I may invest in a better one like you made. thanks again for sharing.
Thank you for this video!! Ive been wanting to test out a rear projection background for my mobile dj business. I have projection screens for home use but couldnt justify spending big $$ on special material just to have my idea possibly not work. I'm ordering this curtain right now as its the perfect dimensions for what I need.
thank you! i have a video art installation inside a black tent, and i was trying to figure out the best way to project on the walls. and i think this might be it.
Great post, just what I need for a video setup at my daughters forthcoming wedding. I can think of several other possibilities for re-using the screen (or several screens...) in the future. A quick question though, any tips for getting rid of the wrinkles in the curtain from when it is packaged. I've made some progress using a hair dryer, but wondered how you'd got yours so flat. Many thanks
I edit in Final Cut Pro 10 (FCPX) and export using "Compressor," a stand alone program that allows me to do all sorts of things... one of which is export in exact screen sizes - standard TV screen size - widescreen - etc... including WHATEVER size I type in. :-) Totally customizable. Works well. Now, that said, FCPX itself can do some things similarly... and it costs $299. Not cheap, but not the $1000+ it used to be. Compressor is $49. Not bad... if you are going to be doing lots of this.
Interesting question! Never even looked at that chart. Looking at it now though, the screen I ordered is the 108x72H so... only the "Soft EVA 5.5 Gauge" comes in that size. So, thats the one I have evidently... so thats what you are seeing in the video. Can't say I tested the other thicknesses. The other curtains I tested where from WalMart & Target... of varying densities (I didn't track that - sorry). Only thing that seemed to really matter was it being frosted in "color." White & clear no go!
What type of software did you use on your computer to project three separate images and the graphics? Looks awesome and thanks for posting this. Going to use the idea for a softball team party awards ceremony. Thanks again!!!
This is the one I used (see link below). Key is finding one that is semi-transparent... but not too much so. Need some light to be caught by the screen, as that's the image you see. But if too white / thick a material then all the light is stopped or the majority anyways and you don't get an image, you get a fuzzy blurry mess. :( www.amazon.com/InterDesign-X-Wide-Shower-Curtain-Liner/dp/B003M6ANPG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1358721403&sr=8-3&keywords=xwide+shower+curtain
Glad you like it. Its getting quite a few hits, and thats a good thing for me & my church website (they call it the WEB for a reason) bringing attention there so I'd rather you not make your own "pulling" viewership from my video (and through it, attention to our church) but... I can't stop you so - all I can do is ask you not to. If you do decide to go ahead with it, I would indeed appreciate your giving a link to this original video & channel. Thanks, Pastor Mark
trying to put together an an outdoor projection thing for my church with three screens. 1) can a projector work as front and rear projector? 2) did you link the projectors, or are they individually projecting the same image? Thank you and Well Done!
This is excellent thank you, can you confirm for me please, do you have three projectors working in union on the three individual screens or one projector and three screens? Thanks
@@Dilly972 No problem! FYI, if interested in more info as to "how" I did it, check out this blog post I did trying to answer the many questions I've received on this video: diyrearprojectionscreen.blogspot.com
Massively! Ambient light (sun!) totally washes out projectors (all but the $20,000 projectors LOL). I would not recommend this for anything outdoors, unless intending to use it in the evening (in the shade at that) or at night (perfect!).
Why not just use a new, clean white sheet? I did a quick test with a white sheet and it looks pretty darn good. Is there a reason that the frosted shower curtain is better than a white sheet? Thanks for the video.
If you are pleased with the results of it, go for it. All good. I just found that testing the various types, the one I recommended worked the best / was the best balance of image quality and brightness. The white ones I tested "caught" / stopped too much light - so the image that came through to the other side wasn't nearly as bright or crisp as the frosted. Again though, if you are happy with the results of white, go for it! All good! :) And... I obviously couldn't test every conceivable brand shower curtain so yeah, if you found a white one you are pleased with the results from, that's awesome! Glad the video helped / got you going this direction. Take care.
I'm not sure I follow your question - can you rephrase it possibly? If you are asking if you can see the image on the back of the screen, yes. But, its pretty pale / faint. This is intended to be a rear projection screen... its supposed to pass the light through the screen so that the image looks good on the viewing side, not the back.
Someone else asked how you store and transport these without ripping or wrinkling that hasn't been answered yet and I think that's a fairly good question! so I thought I'd ask too!
+Quinn Hemesath I had a pretty large / thick (6-8 inches maybe?) piece of PVC type pipe leftover from some other project - and I rolled them around that. Made transport fairly easy. Did "acquire" a few wrinkles in route but I brought a hand steamer with us and was able to quickly steam those out on site / where we were setting this up. PS - Thanks for reposting the question. Most of these get kicked to my email so I see them there. Others don't for some reason - I don't understand why. So thanks for reposting. Hope this helps you & the others.
I got mine and worked fabulous. Thanks for the tip. I got black tape and made border. Looks neat. However I noticed you made three screen and got all three on. How did you manage that? Three projectors ?
:-) Thanks for the kind words. As to your question, the short answer is yes, 3 projectors. But... connecting them and having one image stretch across all three... takes some doing. There's a popup that comes up on the video with a link on it - to a blog I made specifically to answer all of these type "tech" questions / questions I've received along similar lines as yours... but if you have a popup blocker (I do!) you won't see it. So I'll put the link below. Any additional questions after reading it, do let me know. Glad to help anyway I can. diyrearprojectionscreen.blogspot.com
This is BRILLIANT..!! Thank you... My wife and I are Corps Commanding Officers and the Pastors of The Salvation Army here in Berlin, NH... I have been doing the same research for this and you saved me a lot of time and money. I have to ask two questions (just to ease curiosity) 1. These are rear projection screens? I only ask because I see the overhead projector in the video and it appears to be the source... and 2. If they are rear projection, does each screen have its own individual projector?
Great video. I'm hoping to achieve installing the screens to my upstairs window for christmas. Hopefully it works so i can playback various christmas graphics :D.
Glad you are able to use this - cool! On the folds, I have a small hand held clothes steamer... for getting wrinkles out of clothes - I used that to steam out the folds. Just be careful not to get it TOO close to the curtain or it'll melt it. :-( I kept it roughly 6-8 inches away and kept it moving back & forth over an area. Doing so you can see the wrinkles / folds start to melt away. Oh, and I did this with the curtain hanging up obviously. Hope this helps!
Austin Chittaphong I don't follow your question? "From the other side..." "...a good double-sided screen?" Do you mean rear-projection? If so, what you see in my video is rear-projection. If something else, please write back - I'm sorry I'm not following.
Mark, thanks for responding. I was just curious what the picture quality would look like from the back of the screen. I can see the screen is awesome from the front view with the rear projection. My question is how much light is being absorbed on the back of the screen? Is it good enough quality to have viewings from the front and back of the screen simultaneously? If so, there are so much more opportunities! Let me know what you think!
Austin Chittaphong Ok, I see what you are asking now. Sorry about that. Not sure how to answer though as I've never seen this done - lots of reasons not to do it - main one though is that the image will be reversed for one side no matter how you set it up (so text would be backwards - on screen, in movie - signs, license plates, etc, etc). As far as image quality thats tough to say. I suppose if you have the right kind of setup where your projectors themselves won't get in the way... then you'd have a fairly decent picture quality from both sides. Getting the projectors setup where they won't be in the way is a trick though. If on the ground... you need curtains like you see in my video so the front facing people won't have light shining in their faces... and, having the projectors on the ground means people then can't sit behind the screen to view from that angle. If on the other hand you hang the projector from the ceiling, that'd allow you to have people under it / behind the screen viewing from that angle BUT - you'd still have to hang some sort of curtain ABOVE the screen... so as not to have the light shining in the eyes of the people in front of the screen. :-) I know... this probably makes no sense. Its one of those things that when you set it up, you'd discover immediately. I don't want to discourage you from trying it. Picture clarity wise I think it'd work fine. Logistics of the actual setup... making it so you could seat actual people in front of and behind the screen... I think that'd be next to impossible. At least... without spending a lot more money. :-( Sorry I can't be of more encouragement on this one. If you go for it and figure out a way to do it, please send me a video of your finished project - I'd LOVE to be proven wrong - as it sounds like a neat idea! :-)
Pastor this is a great blessing! Thanks for sharing this. Has anyone made a seam of 2 curtains / material to make a larger screen? I did not see it on the forum.. If so, How did you make a nice seam to make a really large screen with noticeable seam? Anyone? Anyone?
Looks impressive. My question for you is did you try using low thread count, or cheap, white bed sheet? I have used that method with success, but keeping it taught so no wrinkles is a challenge. Just wondering in your test if you tried this and how was picture. And btw, sheet can be viewed equally from both sides. Thanks a god bless
I just stumbled onto this. Wow. Great idea. I looked for rear screen for a charity exhibition I’m holding to raise money for local helicopters Ambulance. This will be great. I shall let you know how I got on
hi Pastor its an awesome tutorial i want to make the same as you for a presentation party so what kind of projector is it and how did you hold the screens, on a wood table with out the center of it? i hope you can reply tnx you much god bless
+TuristaTelevision I used 3 projectors we already had at the church - Benq SH910. Ditto that on the stands / we used some stands we already had at the church. What an awesome set up pastor. God Bless you. Your so talented.
Bless you. This is going to be a game-changer for my COVID-safe Halloween display!
quick thing, the clear shower liners, if thick enough, can be used for a holographic projection.
jonathan turner do you have a video?!
I was thinking the same thing! I just didn't know which hue to use, and thank you for letting me know that it is frost!
Awesome - thanks. We’re trying build an immersive cube for a conference and we don’t have a big budget so thanks this is really helpful

Thank you father! This is exactly what I need.
How does it look when the house lights are turned on? Thanks for the idea! God bless!
Hi. Thanks for sharing that brilliant idea, but I have a question... If the white curtain doesn't work, what color do you recommend?
This is the one I used (see link below). Key is finding one that is semi-transparent... but not too much so. Need some light to be caught by the screen, as that's the image you see. But if too white / thick a material then all the light is stopped or the majority anyways and you don't get an image, you get a fuzzy blurry mess. :( www.amazon.com/InterDesign-X-Wide-Shower-Curtain-Liner/dp/B003M6ANPG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1358721403&sr=8-3&keywords=xwide+shower+curtain
Could you possibly do a tutorial on adding a touchscreen element to it??
Glad you like it. Its getting quite a few hits, and thats a good thing for me & my church website (they call it the WEB for a reason) bringing attention there so I'd rather you not make your own "pulling" viewership from my video (and through it, attention to our church) but... I can't stop you so - all I can do is ask you not to. If you do decide to go ahead with it, I would indeed appreciate your giving a link to this original video & channel. Thanks, Pastor Mark
Thank you so much. This is exactly the information I was looking for!
trying to put together an an outdoor projection thing for my church with three screens. 1) can a projector work as front and rear projector? 2) did you link the projectors, or are they individually projecting the same image? Thank you and Well Done!
Cool! If it works out you'll have to shoot some footage of it and let me see how it turns out!
God bless you Pastor beautiful idea, The Lord continues blessing your live and your congregation !!! Pastor Lopez
Pr. Mark, don't listen to the naysayers. You are da man!
:-) Thanks!
This is excellent thank you, can you confirm for me please, do you have three projectors working in union on the three individual screens or one projector and three screens? Thanks
In my excitement I had not read the comments! Yes it is three projectors for three screens! Well done!
@@Dilly972 No problem! FYI, if interested in more info as to "how" I did it, check out this blog post I did trying to answer the many questions I've received on this video: diyrearprojectionscreen.blogspot.com
excellent video, greetings from London, England
You sir, just saved me a TON of cash!
I like that idea. But i am looking to put it in a store front window. will the out side light affect it?
Thanks so much for this great video. Super helpful.
THANK YOU!!!!!! You just saved me a lot of money.
Thanks for the kind words. Glad the vid is of help to you. And... I'll be sure to show my wife your "genius" line! :-) Thank you for that! :-)
Great video. I'm hoping to achieve installing the screens to my upstairs window for christmas. Hopefully it works so i can playback various christmas graphics :D.
Cool idea!
3DpastorDOTblogspot Thanks, Hopefully I can get a video out :)
Ryan Groom Link me in - I'd love to see it!
Great work, thanks for this tutorial and the Video footage!
Thanks! :-)
It really works! Thanks, Pastor. Question- how do you get the folds out of the shower curtain from being in the package?
Glad you are able to use this - cool! On the folds, I have a small hand held clothes steamer... for getting wrinkles out of clothes - I used that to steam out the folds. Just be careful not to get it TOO close to the curtain or it'll melt it. :-( I kept it roughly 6-8 inches away and kept it moving back & forth over an area. Doing so you can see the wrinkles / folds start to melt away. Oh, and I did this with the curtain hanging up obviously. Hope this helps!
The picture looks great! Now I am wondering how it would look from the other side. Possibly a good double-sided screen?
Thanks! I see your point about the setup. I will give it a try whenever I bite the bullet and get a projector!
Thank you for sharing this.Very helpful.
Going to try this for Halloween thanks for the info
Love it I’m off to ikea!
I just stumbled onto this. Wow. Great idea. I looked for rear screen for a charity exhibition I’m holding to raise money for local helicopters Ambulance. This will be great. I shall let you know how I got on
Awesome!
hi Pastor its an awesome tutorial i want to make the same as you for a presentation party so what kind of projector is it and how did you hold the screens, on a wood table with out the center of it? i hope you can reply tnx you much god bless
+TuristaTelevision I used 3 projectors we already had at the church - Benq SH910. Ditto that on the stands / we used some stands we already had at the church. I provided a link to the exact ones under the video / in the description. For more info, check out the blog post I created to answer more: diyrearprojectionscreen.blogspot.com
