    Pro sports has become woke sports. And that's a problem-not just for athletics, but for all of us.
    "Sport has the power . . . to unite people in a way that little else does. . . It is more powerful than governments in breaking down racial barriers. It laughs in the face of all types of discrimination."
    Nelson Mandela spoke those words. The Nobel Peace Prize recipient understood the power of sports to bring disparate people together. There is no better example of this than the famous victory of South Africa's mixed-race team in the 1995 Rugby World Cup. Mandela's presentation of the winner's trophy to team captain Francois Pienaar stands as an iconic symbol of unity in post-apartheid South Africa.
    Sports have served as a powerful racial unifier in America as well. This is not new. It goes back decades.
    In 1936, the great black sprinter and long jumper Jesse Owens won four gold medals at the Berlin Olympics. In 1938, the great black boxer, Joe Louis, scored a first-round knockout over German heavyweight Max Schmeling. The Owens and Louis victories punctured Hitler's Aryan superiority myth, unified black and white Americans in pride and celebration, and established Owens and Louis as America's first black national heroes.
    Jesse Owens and Joe Louis laid the foundation for Brooklyn Dodgers General Manager Branch Rickey's partnership with black baseball legend Jackie Robinson to integrate Major League Baseball in the late 1940s. That, in turn, inspired Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s. Barack Obama credited Robinson for his political rise. "There's a direct line between Jackie Robinson and me standing here," said America's first black president.
    Obama saw what Mandela saw-how sports transcends all barriers: "When you see this group of folks of different shades . . . coming from different communities . . . and then playing as one team . . . and celebrating each other and being joyous in that, that tells us . . . something about . . . America." Sports, in other words, is the ultimate equalizer.
    In competition, what matters is winning. That means excellence matters. And both are colorblind. Sports allow us to experience the power of pure meritocracy-the only way to govern sports, and the only way to govern life.
    But now, all this storied history and the positive message of sports are being undone. In September 2016, NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee-that is, refused to stand-during the national anthem. His defenders say his protest wasn't about the flag. But Kaepernick said otherwise. "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," he told the press. We all know what happened next. Players across the NFL followed Kaepernick's lead, kneeling, locking arms, and even raising fists during the national anthem. Then athletes from other sports joined in.
    Ironically, just as sports has the power to unite, we have discovered it also has equal power to divide.
    On Opening Day 2021, Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred stripped Atlanta of the All Star Game as punishment for Georgia politicians’ passage of a voter integrity bill. Bowing to the political mob that casts half of America as racist, the move fractured baseball’s fan base.
    The entire American sports world-a culture that celebrated victors, colorblindness, and patriotism-has immersed itself in victimization and left-wing radicalism. This immersion threatens permanent damage, both to American sports and to the larger American culture.

      The people who want to get politics out of sports are hypocrites. For example, Laura Ingram told Lebron James to shut up and dribble, yet when Drew Brees gave a more conservative opinion, she said “well he has the right to his opinion.” The true motto is “get politics out of sports…unless I agree.” Not saying I agree with politics in sports. I agree it should get out of sports. I just think the critics lack consistency.

      The Mandela celebration was 'colourblind' but that's because politics had got in and made a change. Politics often use sports to influence people and perpetuate laws. The idea that sports have always been colourblind, for example before the FW De Klerk regime stepped down no black person was allowed to play in a professional soccer league, was soccer still colour blind???

    I finally gave up on all sports about 4 years ago. I use to be a big consumer of everything sports related. But all the woke grandstanding made it easy to find other hobbies. And don't get me started with all the corruption in college sports.

    When you're off the clock, we can talk. My work says no politics, I don't lecture people when I work. The doctor, cook, waitress, and everyone else day to day doesn't lecture me or take a knee. I get fighting for injustice, that's fine, but when I'm looking for a "service" in exchange for my time or money that I'm giving you...no.

      It's reasonable for employers to worry about controversial and touchy issues impeding their service, but this isn't because it's right or justified, rather because it's not profitable. Some athletes' have leverage most people don't, and good for them. Giod money is spent for entertainment or a service, not for workers' capitulation to one's beliefs or political sensitivities. The same people who resent cancel culture also can't tolerate any woke opinions. In reality, capitalism takes advantage of laborers, people need money and thus are expected to stay silent while going along with whatever brand the company strives for, and for the most part it's not okay.

      @@janpeke1948 I don't think you're understanding all the BLM on NBA courts is seen as both a statement but also a political movement, the clothing, the coaches speaking in the NBA during press conferences. It actually is better than it was but if I did what they do during work...I'd be let go. If I said and painted my workspace with anti BLM statements would that be acceptable? If during meeting or talking to the press representing my work would it be OK to be against BLM? Are players pressured to conform to a political or social stance they disagree with? Most players don't talk or promote politics, during games or even after, it's those that do that have ruined the fun.

      Yes, Kaepernick literally loss his job for not partaking in the national anthem and affirming his patriotism. You've literally pointed out everyone has to conform to the works' expectations. However this more of a bad thing than a fair thing, it's literally cancel culture.

      @@oldmanwaterfall He made the political statement during work. That's his choice, no one cajoled him to do otherwise and he had others join him. A few even stayed in the locker room. He isn't playing because he wants more than he's worth as a QB, so like most pro players they retire on their previous millions, and he has a lot. He was offered at least once and I think twice two different contracts from NFL teams and he said it wasn't enough, even though it was market value for a 2nd string QB, with incentives for more if he started. His choice. I really don't have a big issue with taking a knee, but he had no plan. The fans likely pushed him out, not peer pressure...its a business, a customer can choose to not shop there if they don't like the service, that's why pushing political messages at work are a bad idea.

      @@janpeke1948 The difference with sports and to a lesser degree entertainment like actors is they are the "product". Sure sports with regular people is fun to watch, but TV sells superstars playing against each other. Hollywood sells escapism, but usually star power is needed to bring you in to make the big money. Both are expected to be "neutral" because their job is to play the part of a gladiator that fights for YOUR team and affection, the Hollywood star has to play the part of your fantasy character in the movie, that unwritten contract can be broken if the person is too vocal in the real world hating things you like. Is it fair?...probably not, but that's how it works. So when your product says "Vote Trump", or "Your race is guilty", or "You the fan are bad, uncaring, and hurt others"...well you lose customers then. TH-cam personalities are still the product, but if your product is selling political one sided views, well then you know what's coming. There's no expectation of neutrality with TH-cam like sports and entertainment. You can say what you want, but people's reactions and money will determine if it keeps paying the bills.

More white people are killed by cops every year anyway. It's not the country or some invisible institution, it's your attitude.     I don’t like watching sports at all, but even I miss the days where we could all sit down together and watch sports, ignoring all of our petty differences to just knock back a cold one with friends of different races and political beliefs. Now it’s no longer the case.

People use sports and entertainment to escape from real life for awhile and relax. Not everyone lives for politics. Think of something you can't stand hearing about and then imagine it being talked about 24/7, even in your entertainment when you just want to relax for awhile.. From where I'm sitting, the only change it has created is that it's created more hate and resentment. People being silenced if they stray from the narrative. They claim they are for diversity and inclusion. But all I'm seeing are divisions, and diversity of thought is canceled. The current tactics are not helping. Don't listen to MSM. Try to find different sources of information. They edit and skew stories in a way that gives them ratings. They don't report the truth anymore. It's all one-sided opinion. Google and many social media platforms tend to show you what you want to see and hear. I like to get the full story and hear both sides of issues. Somewhere in the middle is the truth. Search outside your realm of thinking and listen to other points of view with an open mind. You might find out that many of us want the same things. We just disagree on the tactics.

Sports, in the past, has been an escape from people's lives and reality. For a few hours, people don't have to think about their troubles and just relax. Now negativity and real life are being brought into their entertainment. There is no escape from it! Again, think of something you can't stand to hear about. All you hear about all day long is that topic. You just want to relax for awhile and not have to think about it. Let your brain recharge. But then you are watching sports and there it is yet again. There is no escape. What do you do? Well, you have two choices. Watch and suffer through it yet again. OR you turn it off and go do something else because you're sick of hearing about it. That's where a lot of people are now. We are done hearing about it!

      @@678crazydave first of all.. we literally had slavery and segregation in a free market. And just because some black athletes were becoming "rich and famous" doesn't mean there was no racism. You can easily look up how much black athletes made pre 1960 compared to their white counterparts and it just a fraction. They were being exploited and unfairly compensated while performing the same and sometimes better than white athletes.

For example black quarterbacks are seen as fast guys and extremely athletic however have no leadership and lack personality while white quarterbacks are seen as smarter, not as athletic but the leader and smarts of the offense. So racism does exist.

    I thought hockey was the last sport I could watch but even they're starting to go down this route. They haven't got players kneeling during the anthem or a thing like that but The hockey News, which is a big hockey publication went left a few years back.       I'm a huge NHL fan. The NHL will fold like a tent in a Hurricane if push comes to shove. The NHL wants to remain neutral. The problem is the players will be outcasts with other sports if they don't go woke. The NHL canceled all their games after that scumbag with a knife got shot by the police in Kenosha. The NHL did it at the last second, they caved. The NHL staring next year has the same TV broadcasting partners as the NBA (ESPN and TNT/TBS).     Too late. I'm just out of sports. MLB, NFL NBA, all a waste of time. I'd rather watch PragerU. Now Formula 1 or IRL or NASCAR. Well, that's a different story.

      @@janpeke1948 Well it's complicated. The short answer, however, I'm American so I lean towards Uralkali Haas. But, I feel if Gene replaced Guenther as manager and found another manager things might shape up for them. I feel they are overmanaged in the engineering portion and it's killing the ability/morale of the car techs. Manage it differently and they may stop having mechanical issues. The Chasis could use some work. It seem sot give some problem. Also, switch to Honda (Ferrari is contributing to some of the mechanical issues frankly) motors as well and I believe they could dominate.
      I do however appreciate and tend to root for the underdog. In this case, it's been RedBull. When they dumped Renault for Honda, things really did turn around. I also see both Perez and Verstappen as a formable driving team that will certainly help RedBull.
      See, complicated. 😉

    When Bob Costas first did his gun control commentary during a football game, my reaction was "shut the hell up and do your job of commenting on the game". If people wanted to listen to political/social commentary, they wouldn't be watching a football game. These athletes and commentators, as well as the team owners and each sports regulating body need to realize that people watch sports to be entertained. The minute they stop focusing on entertaining, they have stopped doing their jobs. Besides, we have youtube, facebook, twitter, etc. to force feed us the approved political/social crap 24/7.

    I played and coached football in college about 20 years ago. I didn't watch a single down of the NFL last year. Haven't watched one pitch of the MLB season so far. I didn't even know my hometown Suns had made the playoffs until they were in the Conference Finals. I am angry that politics has ripped the joy out of sports that used to be such a huge part of my life.

      I am not opposed to diversity of thought, but I am opposed to outright lies. An example is when LeBron James says cops casually choose to hunt black people down, I am against it because it is not only false, but asinine. Statistics say a black person is far more likely to die at the hands of another black person many times over before a police officer would.

      @@joshuaklein8465 Facts don't care about your feelings. It is a fact that cops kill people in general. The reality is more white people die at the hands of police than black people. The media just highlights scenarios that only progress the narrative.
      So if it's such a racist thing to say then look up the stats on how many black people have been gunned down by cops in the past couple years. Then take a look at each individual situation and how many times the "victim" brought it upon themselves. A prime example is Rayshard Brooks who never would have escalated to the point it did if he just complied. Then once you do that look up black homicide in just one major city like Chicago for a single year. It's like focusing on a pin prick when a limb has been amputated elseware, they aren't even close. So how is that racist?

    I used to watch Nascar with my dad almost every Sunday, and go to races in person if they were close. We both completely lost interest after both the media and Nascar itself labeled the fanbase as racist after the Bubba Wallace hoax. The sport was already suffering issues before then, but politics put the nail in the coffin.

    How in the world do you say Keep Politics out of Sports and use the Rugby World Cup as examples?
    For years South Africa wasn't allowed to play in the Rugby World Cup because of Politics and that was a very real reason why political opinion changed in SA during apartheid.
    You can't eat your cake and have it too PragerU. Maybe if you only used other examples like Olympic boycotts (that didn't work okay) but you literally used the most famous Politics in Sports helped Politics example ever.

    you really think that the national anthem at every sports isn't political? that it only becomes political when someone doesn't pay reverence to a song glorifying a country? if i were to go to a game and when the national anthem is blaring i pull out a boombox and try to over power it with the Dutch anthem would that not be a political move? if yes, why? after all, it's just the national anthem. this is just denying that what do is equally political so you can accuse others of making everything political. honestly it shows you think very little of your supporters, assuming they don't understand that you're pulling a fast on on them.
