I have had my 400X for less than a week and made the change after watching your video. The difference is night and day! Many thanks for a great video and the recommendation! I love it! Keep up the great videos! Cheers!
Hello form Japan. I started considering buying scrambler 400x and found your very helpful videos. Thank you for giving a lot of inspirations! Hit like and subscribed!
Thanks for posting. For me the 15 swap is working out great - I would have been able to do it quicker if I had seen this video first. I think this will help other less experienced people like me.
My name is Kevin. I live near Lake Erie in Southeastern Michigan. I’ve been following your videos and I’m very impressed and I wanna thank you for taking the extra effort. I had mentioned buying a 15 tooth sprocket didn’t know where to get one and I appreciate your interesting articles and I follow you now and subscribe to your channel.
No need to pull the axle. Just loosen up the adjusters to provide enough slack in the chain to remove the old sprocket and install the new one. Just did mine the other day. I like the gearing change, bike just seems more calm in each gear.
Just did this mod yesterday (ofc this did helped me a lot) 😅 And yeah it feels so calm gearing now ;) Rpms have definitely dropped by 500 for first couple of gears. Tbh I used 15t sprocket from bajaj Dominar 400 also changed front break pad from bajaj dominor 400 (same part used by ktm 390 )
@@ANIK5261 Tried to source it from KTM although atleast in bangalore they only sell the full sprocket kit with the chain and not just the front sprocket. Hence the question for the dominar 400 sourcing. Any help is appreciated.
I'm swapping mine tomorrow. I'll do my own research, but is there an intuitive way to set your chain tension afterward? I almost feel like pulling the axle IS the easy way, lol. I am a novice on bikes though, so.. 🤷♂️

I had no idea he was THIS versed in bikes when he sold me my S400, lol. I am throughoughly happy with my purchase, but I can honestly say if I had had the budget to get the X... I may have actually considered the additional height, lol. These things are incredible for the money.. Now I have to try to understand this entire sprocket situation.. Because no matter how many times I tried, I couldn't find 7th to save my life on my first ride.. 😂 Thanks again, Will! I'll see ya soonish, Buddy
Thanks for the awesome 400X videos! I have had mine 2 days and am enjoying it. Ordered the 15T sprocket today and will follow along with your video to swap it.
Definitely going to try this. Not that I would ever ride a motorcycle on the Pellissippi International Speedway. Thanks for detailing the process and the results in a usable and easily understood format.
I was very interested in this as well but I put bigger knobbier tires on my bike and that helped tremendously with the short gearing, it still even with taller tires feels like it could have better gear ratio so I may go this route! Keep up the good work bud!
I've seen this in a couple of your videos on the Scrambler 400X - when you go into Off Road Mode, you need to hold the button again. Process is "i" until you see "Off Road" -> Hold for a few seconds -> see "on" option (you're now in the menu to select on/off) -> Hold for a few more seconds -> dash will now say "OffRoad" and the "i" button will no longer let you see any other info, you will also see your TC and ABS lights on the dash light up, warning that those features are currently disabled. Right now, you are only getting into the selection menu, but not actually enabling off road mode. You can see it in your riding footage that the TC light will still randomly light up as you throttle it off road because you haven't engaged the OR mode, so TC is cutting power as it slips.
@BlackhartFilms yeah, I realized that afterwards, but didn't go back and re film the switch to off road mode. Should have... thanks for helping to clarify
This is definitely on my list of things to do sooner than later. I did the same thing with my CBR500R and it worked very well. I’m very happy with my scrambler overall. My only gripes are the really poor headlight performance and the massively over-brightness of the instrument display at night. Looks like you live in a nice part of the world. 👍😃
I do recommend this upgrade its really worth it ❤ it gives different riding experience than before helps to reduce vibration and increase gear length of 1st and second gear and gives smooth experience 🤤
Beware. The stock Triumph sprocket does not have threaded holes to use a “puller”. Some of these sprockets are virtually cemented on. They do not simply slip off the splined shaft as this video makes it seem! Good luck. The new aftermarket sprocket will come with these threaded holes, btw.
I love your videos. I just had my Scrambler delivered yesterday and I'm looking forward to modding it. I miss Tennessee tremendously with all the mountains and curvy roads. We hope to move back that way by the end of the year.
I am getting an early start reserching my next motorcycle, this one is extremely temping. I was looking at bikes in the 650cc range mainly kawasaki z650rs. currently riding Drz400sm, just want something for longer distance riding. I had a versys 650 that I would make trips up to my parents house on, depending on the route it would be 8-12 hours of riding. Shortest route all highway averaging 70mph, longest back road route is 2 hours highway and the rest varies 30-55 mph. This kind of trip would be 1 -2 times a year. How would be at sustained highway speeds? most of the time I ride rural highways and mountain roads.
Any sprocket changes need to be considered holistically, the engine is a short stroke, light crankshaft, four valve single and is designed to rev. At low rpm the oil pressure at the crank may be low especially with the 10/50 recommended oil that has to lubricate the gearbox, clutch and mains each with their own lubrication needs. Add to the mix the harmonic vibrations inherent to singles that in the absence of a balance shaft have to be tuned with frame design...
Absolutely... but don't worry. After switching from the 14 tooth sprocket to the 15T sprocket that comes from the factory in the Speed 400, I had the bike's chakras inspected. It was determined that the synergy between the 15T sprocket and the Scrambler 400X frame and engine was actually enhanced. Weld zen harmony was increased by 18%, the lubrication wellness aggregate saw no noticeable change, and systemic clutch inclusivity was not disrupted. I had the holistic bike organism certified for the lower RPMs using an average increased velocity output model. The Scrambler's unity alliance componentry now have verified solidarity.
I just replaced the stock Rear Tyre 150/60 R17 with a 150/70 R17 on my Speed 400.. It resolved this short gearing issue & the bike now runs very balanced!.. The bike now has become ever more compliant on bad roads + higher ground clearance + riding ergos improved.. Quiet obviously higher top speed/ lower revs in each gear.. So just 1 proper tyre replacement was all that was needed for my Speed 400!!.. So Speed 400 guys who'r unsure what to do, Ive given you a very simple solution 🤷
Haha the new bike comes with 150/70 tyres now. I have a question. When you say more compliant on bad roads, do you mean better suspension performance or are you saying that because of the increased ground clearance?
Thank you for this great fix for better top end performance! It's on my list of things to do. Question: can you make a recommendation of better foot pegs that will fit the 400x? Something wider and more dirt bike style...thank you!

Hello, and thanks for the video. I have a doubt, clicking on the link of the sprocket, the sprocket on the link says for ktm Duke, is the same for the scrambler?
Hello, i am a fellow 400x owner, just one question here, does this have any impact on the throttle response, like the 0 to 60 is taking more time now? and what about the low end torque?
@MusafirKeKadam yes, taller gears will increase top speed, but at the expense of less low end torque. I feel like overall this change made it much more balanced power for my needs
This is exactly what I was looking for, thanks! Question, the link to purchase the sprocket shows a Duke 390, and my assumption is it is interchangeable, correct? I'll be ordering mine now. I tried ordering the Speed 400 sprocket but could not get confirmation from my Triumph parts dealer that the Speed sprocket would work, he said the spindles showed a different part number. I was going to order one anyway as the sprockets are inexpensive, but I am just going to order your recommended sprocket. Thanks again, this will really help on the long stretches of highway I'll be doing on my annual motocamping trip in a few weeks!
Did you find any difference in vibrations at higher speeds? What I mean to tell you is, the vibrations have increased or decreased after changing the sprocket? I would appreciate it if you could share this information with me, thanks.
is the rubber cushion necessary and does the stock sprocket have one? I just ordered my sprocket as well as a slash cut tip exhaust from AJ cycles in NY.
@@RidgeRoamer is it because I’m not pulling my clutch in all the way? It’s because I’m going up hills a lot, I’m often afraid that if I pull my clutch in I’ll just drop 😭 I’m not a very experienced rider since I got my motorcycle license not too long ago
@@emilia0096 if you're concerned about minimizing the time the transmission remains disengaged while clutching in, try practising this on a flat stretch: while accelerating gently, apply and keep enough pressure on the shift lever to be able to shift, and then pull in the clutch momentarily while dipping the throttle simultaneously - again, momentarily. When done right, this can result in a near-instantaneous, smooth upshift, without any harm to the bike. For downshifting, rev-matching is an intermediate-level technique that I would personally recommend practising on a safe stretch. Little joys of riding that take some effort to get down to muscle memory - hope you have fun

Haha never mind, just watched the end of the video where you discuss the interchanability with the Duke 390! Thanks again
What size is the nut holding the sprocket?
Why on earth is the chain on the same side as the muffler? All my other bikes are on the left side. Is this a Triumph thing?
@@popcorngJG Just on the 400s (unless you count bikes that have split dual exhaust). No idea why they did that
How does this affect the accuracy of the Speedometer ?
@@sauledwards5611 no change.
Did you find any difference in vibrations at higher speeds? What I mean to tell you is, the vibrations have increased or decreased after changing the sprocket? I would appreciate it if you could share this information with me, thanks.
Yes. The bike runs about 500 rpm lower at any given, previous speed, resulting in less vibes.
What is the screen on your handle bar¿?
@@vivekkakkoth2784 Carplay/navigation: th-cam.com/video/d1KCdQMvuog/w-d-xo.html
@RidgeRoamer Thank you... I just watching your video on Chigee..
Does the change affect the acceleration?
If it does, it's not noticeable
Have you altered the height of the front mudguard?
@@davidsaunby5208 Yes. th-cam.com/video/ZrJhD5wBZQM/w-d-xo.html
Would it work with a 16 tooth front sprocket?
Should be enough room up front for a 16T, but I didn't try
Is it ok to lift up on the sump guard ??
is the rubber cushion necessary and does the stock sprocket have one? I just ordered my sprocket as well as a slash cut tip exhaust from AJ cycles in NY.
@chefjoel68 the rubber is just a vibration and noise dampener
hi, whats the torque settings on the sprocket? thanks
Is anyone using proper torque values when tightening up these parts? What are they supposed to be?
A countershaft sprocket is simply tighten until it rotates the gear box. Then bend the set washer. Have done this for over 50 years on all my bikes.
Do you think this would work with a 16t sprocket on the speed 400?
@christophercoe3046 yes, there should be room
Do you have any tips on up shifting easier on this bike? I always seem to have problems up shifting. It stresses me a lot since I live in hills
@@emilia0096 I don't have any issues. Does your shift lever need adjustment?
@@RidgeRoamer is it because I’m not pulling my clutch in all the way? It’s because I’m going up hills a lot, I’m often afraid that if I pull my clutch in I’ll just drop 😭
I’m not a very experienced rider since I got my motorcycle license not too long ago
@@emilia0096 definitely try pulling the clutch further
@ thanks!
what about a smaller rear spockt also
@farzinbi definitely an option... I am happy with this setup though. I think much taller and you would start to lose the low end grunt.
What kind of phone mount do you use? The one that I have is centered (which is what I wanted) but it sticks up so high that it covers half the guage cluster in front of me.
@AnonYmous-gi8wf I don't use a phone mount. What's on the bars is a Chigee AIO-5. See description for link to their page. Awesome!
Will it result in stalling issues at low speeds?
@@Vivek11Shinde no
so if u do that, the speed won't be displayed correctly anymore?
@vnm_8945 has no impact on speedometer. Speedometer is off from the factory.
@@RidgeRoamer oh, ok, thanks. :))
What happens if you also replace the rear sprocket?
@anandlakkaraju6825 it changes the gear ratio again... up or down depending on how many teeth rear sprocket.
@@RidgeRoamer so it will go back to its original behavior then
@@RidgeRoamer one last thing - does this change help reduce vibes at 90 mph . In your video I couldn't get a clear view of your mirrors vibrating. Hence asking 😁
@anandlakkaraju6825 it lowers engine rpms at any given speed, so yes, does reduce vibes too. But at 90, it still won't be smooth
Dude, this ain’t really a 90mph bike. If you want that, you need to get something bigger.
Does changing the sprocket void the warranty at all?
Only if you mess something up while doing it.
I don’t know why, but it bothers me that Triumph puts the chain on the wrong side.
Exactly!!!! The weight of the chain and muffler should be opposite of each other
Is that the rubber cushion sprocket?
@IsaPorterMusic it's available with or without. Mine has the rubber cushion.
Thank you for this video
You didn't turn off your ABS or Tration control.... The yellow lights would be permanently on if you did
@popcorngJG yeah, I missed... thought I had it off, but noticed quickly that it was not
It would be nice to be able to get across an intersection without having to shift … twice.
Thanks for the video. But goddamn, chin cams make me nauseous. Maybe switch to a chest cam that isn't swiveling all over the place?
Great video. I'll do this on my 400X (music is just a tad too loud)
Way too loud, ouch ..have headphones on.
GPS speed or it's a waste of time watching ..
@@leeinwis yup. It's in there...
Yep, I saw that, he also said, “Indicated speed, vs actual speed”. more than once, , , did you watch a different video?
No torque wrench 😮
They covered the torque specs in the end of the video. I suggest rewatching.
of coarse you can; honda 500x had the same problem; a useless first gear !!
Does it lesson the vibrations in the handlebars?
@beamerstearoom5657 it changes final drive ratio, speed/rpm affect. That's all.
