    Welcome to Spain!! It’s great to see you promoting the northern and less known areas of our wonderful country. I live in Asturias… just a hop skip and a jump away from Galicia. If you have the time to travel across the North I’m sure you’ll find Asturias, Cantabria and Pais Vasco to be just as wonderful and enchanting!

    Great video. Like you we moved to Spain 20 years ago….but up a mountain in Murcia in the South away from the tourists and very dry (no cattle, sheep or grass here!). We’ve visited Galicia often and love it there too…it reminds me of my native Wales (Celtic history, mountains, green grass and lots of rain). It’s a country full of contrast and so much nicer than the UK.

    Hello Jane, I really enjoyed both of your videos, we are a family in Manchester UK, my fathers family is from Pontevedra… I’m a fluent Spanish speaker due to my first marriage to a Chilano…I have never been to Galicia, but have a fantasy about moving there in the future, and living and learning in a different way as I grow older. I loved the poem about the wanderer, it really spoke to me…did you write it? Or is someone else’s work…I’m a therapist not a poet😉

    I was curious where you were living and I used my detective skills to find that you were living somewhere near O Pino, province of Coruña. Without you mentioning it I discovered by looking at the door of the bread van and then seeing the name of the baker, O do Marquiño. I am curious why you chose that area of Galicia. I know that it is very near the Santiago airport and Santiago itself. I have never been to O Pino but to Santiago many times, either to visit, take flights, or to pass through on our way to the coast, especially to our favorite little town, Laxe, on the Costa da Morte. I love the Galego bread but love even more our favorite dish, pulpo a la gallega.

    • @JaneinSpain
      @JaneinSpain  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good detective skills, Ray! We moved here at the peak of the pandemic and decided to rent a place in the countryside while we figured out where in Galicia we wanted to settle permanently. We're still exploring. We love Laxe, too! Praia dos Cristais is one of my favorite magical little places.
      We got stuck on some winding village roads that were about the width of our car in Laxe once, that was exciting. We got a lot of tight-lipped stares from abuelas in their doorways, and had to do about a 45-point turn to escape. 😅

    I must admit that your videos are much better than other videos I've seen of Galicia. Coming from Southern California where it hardly rains, I know that it rains a lot in Galicia. And the beaches are too cold? Galicia also has a different dialect from the rest of Spain. The pros that I see in Galicia are the small town life where people are friendly, unique, fresh & delicious food and more affordable housing and land. What other autonomous regions have you looked at before settling in Galicia? And may I know why you chose to settle in Galicia vs. other regions in Spain?

    • @JaneinSpain
      @JaneinSpain  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We were more interested in a verdant, green area, so before moving here we explored Galicia, Asturias, Castile y Leon, Cantabria, Basque Country, Navarra, Aragon, and Catalonia. We didn't consider anything further south because we aren't interested in arid regions. And they were all beautiful! But Galicia spoke to my heart from the very moment I set foot here.
      I adore the coast and go often. The Costa da Morte is stunningly beautiful in any season. I'm not a lying on the beach kind of gal, so I can't really speak to that, but plenty of people enjoy the beaches in summer, in various stages of undress.
      Galicia doesn't have a dialect, it has a language. And with it, a very powerful cultural identity. It's really beautiful to see. Almost everyone speaks castellano as well, so if you have some Spanish you'll be OK. But really, if you want to move here, I would seriously consider being open to learning galego. It truly is the best way to begin to know these wonderful people and their beautiful history and culture.
      And yes, it rains a lot. we came from upstate NY, so for us it's a vast improvement over lots of snow and ice. We don't mind the rain, it's what makes Galicia so lush and green. And it also mirrors the Galician spirit, which is hardy and finds joy and appreciation amid struggle and hardship, as well as when all is beautiful and sunny.

      Your best bet is to consult a tax professional. When we factored in the amount we are saving on property taxes and healthcare costs alone, it negated the additional Spanish tax costs. But we are not wealthy, and you may have other considerations. Best of luck to you, and don't forget to factor in quality of life and what that is worth to you.
