Emerald, this was one of your best videos ever! It presented so much information in only a few short minutes, and the camera angles were terrific. I am so impressed with Grandpa's knowledge, skills, and abilities!!! I hope you and the rest of your family realize what an asset he is to your family and how lucky you are to be able to glean some of his wisdom and knowledge simply by working with him. I think he must be the fiber and intellect that keeps your whole operation intact and operating profitably and smoothly. This question has probably been answered before, but is Grandpa the father of the Boss Man or the Boss Lady? My guess would be that he is the Boss Lady's father.

Speaking as a person in the age bracket of your Grandpa, I can't overstate how important it is that he has something to look forward to every day when he opens his eyes. He worked in saw mills, then paper mills for his whole career just sharpening things, at first, saws both band and circular then, in the paper mill, circular saws and chipper blades. In the early days, the saw filer was a very important part of the lumber industry. There were no carbide inserts and depending on the season and species being milled, he would have to grind and set the blades appropriately. If they weren’t right they didn’t cut properly and production went down, along with profits and mills survived or failed. I guess that you could say that I have some saw dust in my blood and this video was particularly interesting and enjoyable for me. I’m not sure how to go about it but I have a couple wonderful pictures taken in 1929, of my grandfather, in a saw mill with the blades that he sharpened, that I would like to share with you.
I am a 68 year old retired carpenter. I spent 40 years in the trades building and remodeling homes. Back in the day we would save up all of our saw blades from our circular saws and once a week a sharpening specialist would drive over to our job site,pick up the dull blades, drop off the newly sharpened blades and take the fresh batch of dull blades with him. Then they invented carbide (throw away blades) and the entire industry changed. The 'throw away' culture will end up disposing of itself.

While sharpening in general is a science and it applies technology. To do it VERY WELL it takes an artist a craftsman at his/her job! One sharpener NEVER criticizes another sharpeners work! GREAT JOB Gmpa!
G-pa's skill of setting and sharpening is extremely valuable to your business at $30 for a new one. I thought they were more expensive. You have an amazing 3 generation team, each with a specialty or two.

Great video ,like all Grandpa's he is a wealth of knowledge and more important experience. As someone who exploded a grinding wheel as an apprentice i can assure you that slow and steady is the way to go unless you want to change your underwear halfway through the day. When we get to that age ,while we may be slower but we are way safer and smarter . You are so lucky to have him around to teach you, i lost both my Grandpa's before i was ten years old .He must be so proud of his Grandkids

Before I retired I was friends with the group leader in the machine shop and he would weld our snapped blades on their band saw welding machine. Saved a ton of money for our farm.

I love your grampa as I am also one. Turned 80 in feb. gramps has become quite knowledgeable on what it takes to do a job that is acceptable to him. I appreciate him going easy on the blades and the carbide sharpening wheel. Will Help the equipment to last longer..he’s a sharp cookie keeping track of the number of times each blade has been sharpened. Also the pitch of the blade. Now I know why your dad is the way he is and I mean that as a compliment to both your dad and his dad (your gramps). Great video. Love you guys. Joe

His way of explaining the sharpening process , was spoken in such a way. that anyone could understand the process. Excellent job on this video !!

I had said in an earlier video that perhaps you might consider sending the blades out for sharpening but after seeing this video I think Grandpa can handle the job efficiently. Kudos to him and to you for another awesome video

Great interview with your grandpa Emerald. Over the years, what I learn about blade sharpening is to have a dedicated and well organized area to perform the task. Ideally, the area should be heated. Sharpening is a job of precision and it help a lot when you are in a confortable place. Good video for people who didn't know how it is done. Thank you!

That's an awesome sharpener , I have the same one model from Cook's saw . The only thing I would caution is don't breath in the dust from it. I usually put a fan off to the side to blow the dust away. Keep on sawing , Be careful

OK all you TH-cam safety inspectors-have at it! Em-put on the safety glasses! The only way that this effort is economically viable is when you have a Grampa available! So-good job in saving up those old blades. Wonderful video as always-the love comes through!
Just on the economic issue, this isnt true. Its viable no matter what. If you paid somebody $20 an hour and they can do 4 an hour, those blades are expensive so it pays off. I looked and a 3" in that length roughly is over $100 So if they can sharpen at least 4 an hour, that is 4 days worth of them, saving $400 for the cost of $20 They could contract somebody experienced to come in once a week for a day, pay him a rate per blade sharpened at say $5 a blade and they all make a killing.
Your grandpa reminds me of people that I've known, not great at explaining things but he's got a wealth of knowledge that if you take the time, you can pick it up. They say that those that can't do, teach. But if you can learn from someone that does stuff, you'll learn so much more.

Well Grandpa my hat is off to you, this was an excellent and informative video. I got into sharpening in the early 80's with Belsaw equipment went thru 2 motors before the warranty's ran out then it got too expensive to replace, I sharpened thousands of knives and scissors countless circle blades and even re toothed hand saw blades on occasion. never throw out any blade until you get "ALL" the goody. I sharpen my Mill blades and yes you will have them break they make a hell of a racket when they do if you listen to your blade they sing a song and its when you hear the sour note is when you know its time to sharpen again. You Gals take care of Grandpa for he is a treasure. John from Georgia🤠

Just like sharpening a cross cut saw but with a bit fancier equipment, set and file the teeth. Cool video. Drove past your place on Sunday coming back from the mountains. Checked out the PA Lumber Museum last weekend. It is incredibly well put together! Going to definitely go back when they run the steam saw mill this spring or fall!
Our printing business used lots of cut-off wheels that needed regular sharpening. One plant used a bespoke electric sharpener, but our smaller plant used just a valve grinder from an auto repair shop. We saved six grand over the cost of the specialty sharpener by using a valve grinder.

On your wire wheel cleaning rig. Good simple method. I have used multiple wire wheels ganged together,, to have a wider brush area. The only limitation is how long is the threaded mandrel. I have spun as many as 7 wire wheels with washer spacers between on a long mandrel. You might try just one more,, but then again,, too wide and you are brushing the backside of the blade teeth,, or how wide of a sap track are the wheels leaving. I liked your simple guide and handing back and forth to buff a 1 foot or so stretch.

Just on the economic issue, this isnt true. Its viable no matter what. If you paid somebody $20 an hour and they can do 4 an hour, those blades are expensive so it pays off.
I looked and a 3" in that length roughly is over $100
So if they can sharpen at least 4 an hour, that is 4 days worth of them, saving $400 for the cost of $20
They could contract somebody experienced to come in once a week for a day, pay him a rate per blade sharpened at say $5 a blade and they all make a killing.
Your grandpa reminds me of people that I've known, not great at explaining things but he's got a wealth of knowledge that if you take the time, you can pick it up. They say that those that can't do, teach. But if you can learn from someone that does stuff, you'll learn so much more.

Well Grandpa my hat is off to you, this was an excellent and informative video. I got into sharpening in the early 80's with Belsaw equipment went thru 2 motors before the warranty's ran out then it got too expensive to replace, I sharpened thousands of knives and scissors countless circle blades and even re toothed hand saw blades on occasion. never throw out any blade until you get "ALL" the goody. I sharpen my Mill blades and yes you will have them break they make a hell of a racket when they do if you listen to your blade they sing a song and its when you hear the sour note is when you know its time to sharpen again. You Gals take care of Grandpa for he is a treasure. John from Georgia🤠

Great video I make fillet knifes out of old band saw blades and they are hard to drill through but they make great knifes

Just like sharpening a cross cut saw but with a bit fancier equipment, set and file the teeth. Cool video. Drove past your place on Sunday coming back from the mountains. Checked out the PA Lumber Museum last weekend. It is incredibly well put together! Going to definitely go back when they run the steam saw mill this spring or fall!

Our printing business used lots of cut-off wheels that needed regular sharpening. One plant used a bespoke electric sharpener, but our smaller plant used just a valve grinder from an auto repair shop. We saved six grand over the cost of the specialty sharpener by using a valve grinder.

On your wire wheel cleaning rig. Good simple method. I have used multiple wire wheels ganged together,, to have a wider brush area. The only limitation is how long is the threaded mandrel. I have spun as many as 7 wire wheels with washer spacers between on a long mandrel. You might try just one more,, but then again,, too wide and you are brushing the backside of the blade teeth,, or how wide of a sap track are the wheels leaving. I liked your simple guide and handing back and forth to buff a 1 foot or so stretch.
