    Another thing the Surface Pro (or any touch screen Windows machine) can do: use it as a wireless, touch screen monitor for your Windows 10 desktop.
    Don't know why I never see this mentioned. Windows 10 has a built in feature for using another computer as a wireless display. It works flawlessly, without lag, over wi-fi. I use it all the time for photo editing, video editing, and animation.
    I can't even list all the benefits, but here are a few more of my favorites:
    1) Accessing dozens of terabytes of local media storage and massive processing power from a relatively small touch screen on my couch
    2) Using a stylus for image editing on my desktop PC in conjuction with other 4k monitors
    3) Utilizing two completely separate processors from the same screen. I can finishing setting up a queue for some advanced rendering then switch over to TH-cam without worrying about my web browser hogging all the RAM.
    The possibilities are endless.

      There are apps on the iOS App Store that offer a *comparable* functionality to sharing a Windows 10 desktop to a Surface Pro as described by you; you would just have to look for them.
      Note: I have used a Surface Pro, but I've never used the screen sharing option (because it was a school's computer).

    • @gapinzonr
      @gapinzonr 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@flimsyfox but why use apple device if it offers less functionalities and is more expensive?

    • @flimsyfox
      @flimsyfox 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@gapinzonr It depends on what you use it for. If you use an iPad for graphic design and artwork, it's a viable alternative to drawing tablets because it provides on-par hardware functionality and *then some.* Notice how I said hardware functionality. Dev support for that type of application is scarce, which makes it not perform as well as it typically could. Another standpoint is from a music production perspective. Even though the iPad is not the best performing option out there for music, developers support it extensively because that's where a large portion of music producers are. USB-C is theoretically a viable option for audio because it provides a consistent quality without having to spend thousands, especially with its bandwidth upgrade. I have not personally used it (my first computer build with a USB-C port will have just one), but I am optimistic about the future it could bring for audio.
      If you use an iPhone, it could be useful for photography, although the debate is up in the air because many competitors have caught up with Apple.
      As for your point on how expensive they are, you're right. They are really expensive, but *some* devices live up to their price. Also, cheaper companies tend to adopt industry trends after they see it being successful in Apple's hands, so it could be described as an "early adopter's" company.
      Of course, there is much more to dive into, and Windows offers things that Apple doesn't.

      it can replace your laptop if you know nothing about true computer capabilities and love the "hype money rape game" that apple brings. relatable to a young girl in a small town who wants to run away with a music band but doesn't know shes just a roadie to the band. Apple doesn't really care because it knows you're already hooked like a fish on a real, on pure hype. willing to throw your money at them, and all you get is a good looking worm on a hook.

    • @Charlesb88
      @Charlesb88 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Teoh Yi Chie There is never a one-size-fits all approach to computers and whether it’s price, size/weight, ease of use, power user features, security, etc. no one computer/tablet/smartphone will meet everyone’s needs or even every pro’s needs. For some iPad Pro as a laptop replacement users, they simply “live” with the compromises, other “suffer”, and others simply don’t notice them at. If your needs are somewhat more limited in the areas where the iPad Pro suffers such as file management, USB connectivity, multi-tasking, then you may be able to “live” with the compromise, if you notice them, whereas other power user’s might will “suffer” through them frequently wishing they could so X, Y, or Z on their iPad Pro but contouring to stick with the it due to other benefits that in their mind outweighs the limitations. For many pro’s, also having a laptop to switch to when these limitations get in the way of productivity is the solution and it’s what I do. You don’t have to simply put up with just computing device for everything (i.e. a Swiss Army knife of computing devices, so to speak), provided you can afford to own more then one. Use an iPad Pro for tasks that it works for you wish and a laptop for other tasks better suited to it, for you. When traveling for business some IPad Pro pro users decide if they will be doing anything on that trip that can’t be done on a iPad Pro alone, and if not then go with a larger/heavier laptop or both.

    Let's also not forget about the Bending issue, no I'm not talking about JerryRigEverything's durability test (though you might wanna be careful with leaving this tablet on your couch in case someone accidentally sits on it) but the fact that some users are experiencing iPad Pro being bent OUT OF THE BOX. Apple acknowledged the "issue" but doesn't consider it as a defect as it doesn't impact the product performance, so chances are you will get a bent or will bend your fancy iPad Pro because of horrible structural support and Apple won't consider its lack of engineering as their fault since all performance metrics are still the same even if you've got a 3200R curve on your iPad. Cool right?

      It's a lie though. It's only faster on synthetic benchmarks, which don't represent real world use.
      It can achieve faster speeds than laptop CPUs, but only in short bursts (enough for a benchmark). Under a sustained workload inside that fanless slim body, it will overheat and throttle very quickly, and get slaughtered by a real laptop. Under the same workload, that Intel CPU has better cooling and can sustain its speed.
      I would very much like to see Unigine and PCMark, The Witcher 3, AC Odyssey etc on iOS for equivalent benchmarking purposes.

Personally I cannot see a world where the current iPad could replace ur laptop. The problem is Apple refuses to let it. Instead of improving iOS to make it more like a computer, hence probing their claim, they're removing essential PC features and COMPLETELY handicapping this device for literally ANYONE THAT DOES MORE THAN ART AND CONTENT CONSUMPTION! The only reason I recommended the iPad Pro to her was because, like u said, no other company has matched it's Pencil and she wanted Art. Basically, for people other than artist and content consumers, this will never replace a laptop unless Apply seriously decides to change their attitude from "Let's not displace the Macbook" to "Let's give consumers their money's worth and the best experience "

I still need my laptop for programming and 3D modeling, but I also have many uses for my iPad Pro. I prefer watching TH-cam on my iPad since it’s way more portable than a laptop and has a decently sized screen. I also use the Apple Pencil a lot to take notes or draw. Additionally, I’m able to use my iPad in conjunction with my laptop to do 3D sculpting that utilizes the pressure sensitivity of the Apple Pencil.
    It’s a wonderful device to have in addition to a laptop, but not as a replacement. For me, I really need both. A Laptop can’t replace my iPad, and an iPad can’t replace my laptop. It’d be nice to one day see a happy medium between the two, but that day isn’t today.

Sure the iPad pro will do things a tiny bit faster and it will be able to do some things the 300 dollar iPad cannot do, but it shouldn’t matter as long as you’ve got a primary pc to do them anyway. I couldn’t live without my iPad, but I’m more than happy with my 300 dollar version, in the end I don’t think paying so much for what is still a tablet justifiable. If you can afford it it is obviously better still, but I believe it’s not necessary for 80% of the people who do buy it. If, as you said, it actually was a happy medium between the two, I think it would be absolutely worth it, but right now it’s not.

    I do own an iPad Pro 11 inch. I did not consider a Surface Pro, I did not consider to buy a laptop. I bought mine because I wanted it.
    I am writer, musician and student. My work consists out of writing songs, taking notes in university and sometimes create instrumentals for my music.
    I am planning on filming and video editing in the future as well. Consider this:
    The iPad Pro is the optimal machine for someone who wants to get started using „professional“ programs for photo- and video-editing or something similar. Most apps in that field are cheeper than there desktop counterparts and offer a similar experience i.e. LumaFusion being comparable to Final Cut, but being way cheeper than the entry version of FC. If you want to get started, the iPad Pro offers an inexpensive alternative into the world of creative work on a computer and it is cheeper and faster than a surface, if you account for the programs needed to work on it in those spaces. When I say it is inexpensive, I do mean that most work-stations are very expensive and the iPad rivals a 15 inch iPad Pro in performance while being way cheaper, if you are ok with having less storage. Plus there are ways to connect a hard drive to the iPad over Wifi until iOS supports hard drives natively.
    Also, the iPad is god‘s gift from heaven for students. I can work on my presentations, create papers, but also work and highlight PDFs right on the iPad. If I make a mistake I just delete the last action and change the color of the marker instead of having to print out the PDF again and again. I own an old MacBook Pro 13 inch form 2013 and if I HAVE to do something with a drive I can still opt out to that, but I honestly never had to do that since owning my iPad. I love the iPad Pro and it was probably the best choice for me, but I do get where you are coming from Linus.

To call something a computer I'd say it needs to be able to boot from external storage, or at the very least a verified restore partition if you want to still control what OS is loaded. Every feature they "perfect" even the obligatory anodized aluminum that's only filleted on one axis, is to increase profit. Dongles. Batteries. Shitty VRMs. T2 chips. Even USB C. I do professional visual effects and editing work, graphic and UI design, software engineering, and produce music as a hobby occasionally.
    I have had iPad Pro 9.7" and 10" and the only pro-area it's good at is design and photography. For the rest there's just no software, be that apps or system-level support for something.
    - You can't run Node.js/Python/Anything to develop
    - You can sort of edit with Luma Fusion (it's like, reeeeally good for a tablet app) but you can't create motion graphics
    - Garage Band is a good sketch book, but it lacks any mixing capabilities beyond volume and basic 3 band EQ. There's an Auria app which even has fucking FabFilter plugins, but it's still not a proper full DAW
    On the graphics side however:
    - ProtoSketch is an awesome vector graphics app similar to Sketch/Figma on desktop
    - ProCreate smokes everything else in drawing field
    - Affinity Photo replaces 99% of Photoshop functionality for most people.
    With the epic display and the Pencil, you can do graphics and photo editing on iPad pro and feel really good

    Honestly, Apple shouldn't advertise the iPad Pro as a laptop replacement. Most professionals today would always prefer a standard laptop with a keyboard and trackpad. The only demographic the iPad Pro can appeal to are people who need it specifically for drawing. That will eventually change in the future as the younger generation gets older and become professionals, and they will go for an iPad for work because that's their main computer growing up.
    For now though, Apple should be advertising it as a laptop alternative, not replacement. It's a small change in wording but makes a significant difference in rhetoric to where it's accurate. Laptops will always have their strengths. They can do more precise tasks, use expandable storage, type a 10 page essay, and so on. However, the iPad can do most of those tasks, just in a different way; it's a matter of whether you are willing to adjust to it. If you do decide to adjust to it, you get more features with an iPad like scanning documents, writing notes, drawing directly on the screen, seeing augmented reality, and much more. In addition, you get a better experience of web browsing, watching videos and playing games, which is what most people do on their computers anyway.
    Overall, the 2018 iPad Pro is, by far, the best tablet ever created which wasn't really a question to begin with. Android tablets pretty much fall flat. The Google Pixel Slate is a joke. Microsoft's Surface Pro is more of a laptop because it relies more on mouse than touch, and it falls short on being a good tablet. However, if you are willing to commit to it, the iPad Pro can be a somewhat good laptop alternative as well, and that's enough to make it a good purchase.

    I overwhelmingly agree that something like this needs full OS X with a "tablet mode". I've been saying this since the original iPad launched. The future is something like an iMac that you can take off the stand and it goes into tablet mode for portable touch use like light browsing and productivity, then you put it back and can use a mouse and keyboard with full Mac OS. Strangely Microsoft has beaten Apple to the punch on this and continues to do so.

I still would never touch an apple device though; my needs have been met by many other devices that the technologically inept would refuse to use. So, it's more about individual use cases above all.

      Just a pug on the internet. Yes, it’s true that a tablet, even a high end tablet like the iPad Pro, will not replicate all the features of a laptop unlike whereas the Surface, which doubles as both, can. But if what you do on your laptop can be done just as well on a tablet (especially a high-end tablet like the iPad Pro) then the missing feature are not an issue for you. Thus “replace” in this context means act as a substitute for a laptop by by providing the features of laptop that you use and need even if not all the features of a laptop. If it can replace a laptop in your particular use case not all use cases, then it’s a laptop replacement for you but not for everyone.

    This is my input as an artist. I REALLY want to love the iPad Pros, and I do. Like Linus said the Apple Pencil feels near perfect to draw with, only the Wacom pens feel comparable. And there are a few robust apps for art.
    But it's not a computer. Even now. It's still just a companion device. The iPad pros feel sorta frustrating from an artist perspective, if you want it to be your only device. It feels SO fun to draw on, it's like a light e-sketchpad, you have the freedom to draw/position wherever you want rather than be anchored to your desk (like a real sketchbook), the battery life lasts an eternity compared to drawing on a laptop, when you turn it on you can begin drawing imedietly instead of waiting for a computer startup. You'll want to ditch your computer and just do work with this. But you can't.
    While good drawing apps do exist the vast majority are not for getting serious work done. Procreate is easily the best one as a photoshop replacement. Astropad requires a separate computer anyways
    If you want to make complicated artwork with dozens/hundreds of layers you'll miss your shortcuts. Getting artworks between different apps is way harder than it needs to be because you can't manipulate files the way you want to. Among many other things. The software holds this thing back WAY to much.
    It's a really *fun* device. But almost no matter what "pro" you consider yourself to be, it can't be your only device

    Something I think Linus missed at the end there is the existence of the regular ipad. If the pro can't replace a laptop, then why pay twice the price of a regular latest gen ipad? My girlfriend who's an art therapist tried the pro and the regular ipad and really found no reason to get the pro. The only real downside is that the first gen pencil doesn't have some of the conveniences the second gen one does have, but are you really willing to pay twice the price or more for some small conveniences? If you're an artist I think it's best to just get the standard ipad and keep using your real computer along side it.

  • @Gltch98
    @Gltch98 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not all professions do their work primarily having to use computers or using computer software. And the iPad is perfect for that, to me its more like an e-notebook. I'm thinking of the medical field like doctors and nursed (the career I am studying into).
    Its sleek and simple design is really appealing and is a great companion to hold and use in a professional environment. To take notes from others and to easily show or get across ideas and information to others while it doesn't distract from a 1 on 1 conversation. using a phone makes it look like you are too uninterested and using a laptop can get too much in the way while the iPad is perfectly in the middle and is an acceptable conversation device. Also when you stand most of the time its very hard to use a laptop.
    I love iOS. Yes it's not as rich or in depth but for what I need it for I don't need it to be. The iPad is like an extension of my body. I don't have to think about it, it just works. A laptop/PC feels like a machine I'm having to control. I love my Windows Desktop but I think that the iPad has nailed being seamless.
    I think of it as Computers(PC/Laptops,Servers) They are the things doing the work, they need performance and the systems and software and that isn't what an iPad is for. As much as people may think, the iPad is not meant to replace a Laptop, but that doesn't make it irrelevant. It is for another purpose I think that if you are doing the work, hands on, like doctors, counsellors, even to architects and professors and need to compile and organise your thoughts with a simple and elegant device then get an iPad.
    Even then the performance is no slouch. I love to do videography as a hobby and editing on the iPad is amazing. If you haven't seen Johnathan Morrison's video on editing with the iPad then you need to. Plus I love a bit of art as well which with the pencil is an absolute dream.
    I'm who the iPad is for.

      Odin Asgard no thanks. I’ll take your word for it. I still stand by my point though. I can see through their marketing. They’re working towards dumbing down the Mac so they can either:
      1. Dumb down the Mac and make it functionally the same as the iPad so consumers will finally drink the kool aid that Apple’s been trying to sell (i.e., that there’s no reason to buy a laptop when the iPad can do the same thing.). Therefore giving them the green light to finally kill off the Mac.
      2. Dumb down the Mac by taking away core functionality that it’s had for the past twenty years so they can slowly sell that functionality back by means of yearly incremental “hardware upgrades”.
      Or, 3: Some combination of both possibilities mentioned above.
      Not to give away my age but I’ve been watching Apple’s tactics for well over twenty years and I know their pattern. Trust me, nothing they do is in the interest of the consumer in the long run. It’s in the interest of Apple’s bottom line.

      Windows 10 is trash. Mac OS is basically UNIX and if apple wasn’t against keeping it open source it probably would be 100% compatible with LINUX. Apple locks down in their kernel what hardware is utilized and how it’s utilized. It’s why you see way less crashes on Mac OS. It’s also part of the reason why their i9 processors aren’t going to be pushed as hard as an i9 on windows.
      Windows 10 sucks, agree with the dude below, Windows 7 should have been their baby.

      @@corbinlenning3505 Windows 10 is fine, and it's miles better than iOS or Android, which is what it competes against in the reduced instruction set market.

    As a professional graphic artist, if you had to have a tablet to draw on, I would go with the surface pro. Clip studio/adobe creative suite and a traditional file system is really the best way to go. Also if your a gamer it's nice to be able to use steam stream on a home network to a surface tablet from a gaming rig. Not gonna give up my iphone though
