I've only been listening since The Wall and Final Cut era, but was deeply versed in their entire catalog (including having a hundred or so live shows in my collection). This album always felt like a return to that golden era Floyd sound after a departure that began with Animals.
It's a very good album. I suspect the lyrics deal with his parting ways with Roger but it could be about anyone - or even a business entity like a record company.
I think the first verse is about Syd Barrett and the second is about Roger Waters. The third is just about letting go of the negative feelings he had regarding his relationship with each of them
Brother you are listening to the best theatrical psychedelic rock group each of their lyrics of their precious melodies make you travel wooow today pink floyd and POLES APART IS ONE OF THOSE TRIPS DAVID GILMOUR NICK MASON RICHARD WRITE enjoy the trip woooow
The Division Bell is the album that rekindled my love for Pink Floyd and specifically this track and the guitar solo. This was the Pink Floyd I had grown up with, from Meddle, Obscured By Clouds, DSOTM and Wish You Were Here. Animals left me cold as did the bloated double album that followed (aside from a couple of tracks) and The Final Cut was just dire. Then along came this album and I was overjoyed to discover their magic had not died, it had merely been on hiatus.
I hear you, and please indulge me in a story your comment sparked in my mind. I came to Pink Floyd just before they released A Momentary Lapse of Reason, and only really knew The Dark Side of the Moon (which was revolutionary to me, and still holds the highest place in my estimation for all music). I adored A Momentary Lapse of Reason (which I played alongside U2's The Joshua Tree), and from there I discovered the rest of PF's discography, of which Obscured by Clouds and Atom Heart Mother were probably my favorites. In the seven or so years between A Momentary Lapse of Reason and The Division Bell, I learned a ton about the band and knew their entire catalogue. I was caught up in all the fights, with strong feelings of my own, so I was wary when The Division Bell came out. However, it quickly rose to the top of my PF favorites. I'm with you on Animals (my least favorite, but an album I like okay), although I liked The Wall. Anyway, without going on further, my head nods in the spirit of your comment, and I wish peace to you!
@@wendymotogirl Everyone is different Wendy and everyone is entitled to their own opinion when it comes to the very subjective 'science' of musical appreciation. And why would you be so disparaging about Polly Samson writing lyrics? Is that something she should not be permitted to do in your world? Are there any other rules everyone should follow in order to become an 'enlightened' Pink Floyd fan in your estimation?
@@MDElam Thank you for your insights and understanding that we all hold our own unique perspectives with regard to Pink Floyd's music and that there is no 'right' or' wrong' answer as to which albums we prefer. I also liked A Momentary Lapse of Reason very much, although I only discovered the album after The Division Bell had rekindled my interest in the band. Obscured By Clouds is a very underrated album in my opinion and resonates with me because it encapsulates the more dreamy, psychedelic sound that I have always associated with Pink Floyd, rather than the much more strident compositions on an album such as Animals. I will always maintain that The Wall should have been a single album and that The Final Cut should never have been released, but these are nothing more than my personal opinions and I do not seek validation for holding them. Peace to you also.
I don’t know of anyone who would said The Division Bell is their or even David’s best album. Some of the songs sound a little incomplete to me. Yet, somehow this album always speaks to me. Maybe because I was 20 when it was released, saw them live that year, and for a variety of reasons it is very nostalgic to me. They did play this live on the Pulse tour maybe a couple of times? Not on the official concert video, but I believe it’s a special feature on the release, sourced from bootleg video and audio. One of my favorites from the Gilmour era
Thanks for reviewing this song 🎵 I don't think this album gets the kudos it deserves. An over looked gem by many hope you do more from this album❤️🎸🎶🎤🔥👊🎵🇺🇲

I don't care if people think, or don't think, if this is their best album. Been listening to them since 1967 and I love this album.
me, too

Most melodic album.
For me, the album versions speak more clearly than any live performance. ty
I love this album and this is my favorite song on it. ❤

They played Poles Apart on roughly a third of the shows from the 1994 tour. It's an underrated song, imo.

Thanks for the suggestion 😁
I agree. I´m a late fan from PF and this album was for me the entrance to a full new expericence of PF and their earlier songs

Molte canzoni dell' album di questo brano (THE DIVISION BELL) sono state scritte da David Gilmour insieme a sua moglie Polly Samson

Nobody like Floyd!!! You got about 130 more to go! Lol! Marooned is a next great choice! But yeah he was talking about Syd Barrett
The first verse is about Syd, the second is clearly about Roger
