Israel & Hezbollah: What to expect next | Quick Take

- This wave of Israel-Hezbollah attacks is disentangled from Iran, and we saw that the Israelis, of course, were able to assassinate the political leader of Hamas, Haniyeh, who was in Tehran on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Iranian president, deeply embarrassing for the Iranians. It's been a month, and there's been no Iranian retaliation despite the fact that the Supreme leader and others in the Iranian government structure had said that major strikes were coming within hours; that's not the case. Iran is waiting for a window of opportunity to avoid dramatically escalating the feud into a region-wide war, same as Hezbollah.

Ian Bremmer's Quick Take:
A Quick Take to kick off your week. The Middle East back in the headlines, though fortunately, not as dramatic, a blow-up, as many had feared. This is the Hezbollah-Israel conflict, the Northern front, as it were. And the Israelis had assassinated one of the founders of Hezbollah a month ago, and a lot of concern and waiting as to what Hezbollah would do to respond. We saw that over the weekend, several hundred missiles being launched from Lebanon into Israel. The United States and Israel with advanced intelligence on the coming strikes, and were able to launch preemptive strikes that apparently took out about two-thirds of the missiles that were going to be launched. But Lebanon, Hezbollah continuing going ahead with those strikes and not a lot of damage. Not a lot of damage by the Israelis with the preemptive strikes. A few military dead in Lebanon, and it looks like one Israeli military officer killed from the Hezbollah strikes.

THank you so much Ian.
Rockets were launched from Lebanon, Mr. Bremer - not missiles. The difference is missiles have the ability to change direction mid-flight while rockets can't - it is a huge technological difference.
Actually, and just because I'm not sure why you raise the distinction, rockets are missiles, but not all missiles are rockets. Arrows are missiles, too. And "rockets" that launch capsules into space change direction. But I'm guessing that your point is that Hezbollah doesn't care what it hits when it fires in a general direction, trying to cover a grid square, and I get that point having been adjacent to such a square myself. It's a fair point, although a guided missile can lose its guidance as well.
One of American long term headaches even.
The very religious Middle East - bringing fun and wisdom to the entire World for centuries !
Israel is not religious, and my family ended up in Israel because of secular Nazis in Germany
Israel is in large part not only religious but fundamentalist. What's going on in the West Bank is not being done by retired antique dealers from Connecticut. Although I would not call fundamentalist bigotry 'religious' whether behind the fig-leaf of Judaism, Islam or Christianity.
@@redpigeonsThe Nazis were extremely religious. They had a cult (see) of personality in Hitler, they had elaborate rituals and ceremonies, myths (Aryan beliefs), a blood-and-soil belief not tied to rationality, and a certain "Volk" chosen people belief, and faith in absolute rights and wrongs as determined by party orthodoxy.
Should I mention the Vatican links at the time? Pipe Pius XII? I'll pass, but Google works. So-called "Positive Christianity" was promoted, let's leave it at that.
Calling the Nazis secular isn't something I can agree with.
@@StephenFlynn-xl2fwwhat's going on in the west bank in large part is because of people from Brooklyn. Yes the bad part of Israel is religious like in the US. I should have said my part of Israel the majority of Israel is not
@@redpigeonsYeah, I generally agree with the point you're trying to make, but while Tel Aviv may be quite secular and modern, there is the regular story of a Jewish guy from Brooklyn going to Israel to claim "the motherland". Yes, being Jewish is as much an ethnicity, but that's not the part of them driven to Israel. Again, many people who haven't been to Israel might be surprised by how secular it is. As for the Nazis, they were secular. "The Church Undone" is an indepth look at how German Christianity embraced the Aryan elements of the Nazi party. Germans remained religious during the war and even adopted a belief that they were chosen by God. I fancy that if the Nazis told Germans to swear off Christianity, we might not have had Hitler for long.
The sooner any war, the better.
Still carrying on biased analysis...
Given how impotent the Biden Administration's response to just about any security issue around the world has been, including the aforementioned Houthis in Yemen, I think it's fair to ask if having Jake Sullivan in the White House is just an invitation for our adversaries to attack. He's done a great job making sure Putin doesn't feel threatened, that's for sure. Not sure if there's an Irish-American more afraid of a fight than the one that is our national security advisor.
It is important to consider that the initial blow in this volley had been a Hezbollah rocket borage that targeted a group of kids who were playing soccer resulting in the deaths of a dozen children. The Israeli’s then executed the Hezbollah military chief in Beirut in retaliation.
Bullshit! Unlike Israel, Hezbolla never target civilians . Those kids were Syrians , holding Syrian passports , living in Syrian occupied territory.
ISRAEL is the criminal
ISRAEL is committing Genocide
Neither Hezbollah nor Hamas is a state, and both of Hezbollah and Hamas are Iranian proxies in territories that are controlled by failed states. Fascinating that Mr Bremmer thinks that "this is disentangled from Iran". Nevertheless, the "geo-strategic" conclusions he draws out from around minute 4 are instructive.
"if a war breaks out Hezbollah gets destroyed" ... ok, if that's the case, why Israel hasn't destroyed Hezbollah during the past several decades? Is Israel escalation-shy?
@@davoodfalahati673 right before he said a bunch of Israelis would die after the iron Dome was overwhelmed
@@ahappyimago again, Israel's behavior doesn't show any regard for the lives of civilians. Hostage negotiations is the most recent example among others.
Set the western hubris aside for a minute and you will see there are a lot of potent, and technologically-advanced actors, groups and countries that can easily challenge the west.

Time is not on Israel's side, and the axis will wait for the overly aggressive Israelis to make a mistake
Damn dude. Just be objective. You're other stuff is so good. But when it' comes to Israel you say nothing about genocide and apartheid.... geez
Not every war is a genocide. Israel is not an apartheid state.
@@Zephyr5702 ICC, ICJ, Human Rights Watch, ...b'Tselem(Israeli), Amnesty International. Oh yah, and most of the world... cope.
@@786Plotinusyou sound like you are in greater need of some copium
agreed. Ian is pretty objective usually but he doesn't touch the genocide in Gaza. Israeli politicians have repeatedly stated their genocidal intent, the mass slaughter and per Amnesty International: massive seizures of Palestinian land and property, unlawful killings, forcible transfer, drastic movement restrictions, and the denial of nationality and citizenship to Palestinians are all components of a system which amounts to apartheid under international law.
I think he's afraid to be honest about it because his business will suffer. He doesn't want his life's work to be destroyed by the pro-israel forces trying to keep a lid on what is really happening.
@@786Plotinus I won't cope with dishonesty. If Israel's intention were genocide there would be no one left in Gaza decades ago. Learn the defninition of the word. It's not Israeli policy. Also Apartheid is another lie. I'm happy to discuss any of these things with you.
Usually you're reporting is very accurate, but to say that Hezbollah only targeted military sites is outrageous. They destroyed a house in Akko and a chicken coop on a kibbutz that both are nowhere nearanything military
