Hi there.. For any future rusty cylinder// rusty rings stuck // Brake fluid will dissolve rust quickly. Faster than white vinegar. The DOT 3 brake fluid will find small passages...and then use your torch to heat the block...expand it, and then pry on the flywheel.

Sorry to tell you this but Colorado cars don’t rust, they don’t use sodium or calcium chloride on the roads! They do use magnesium chloride which does not encourage rust
My uncle and aunt had a '60 Bel Air and '62 Bel Air, [his and hers] with 6 cyl motors, around the early 70's, and ran like champs. Both were 2 door sedans, with B posts.
A magnificent 4 door post car in the re-making :) We need more of those back on the road (electrified?) with modern steering and brakes, Bluetooth and aftermarket AC
Looks like they ran it with a blown head gasket until it would run no more . We had a 61 Chevy with a 235 and drove it fully loaded with 3 people and some of our personal effects when we moved in 1970 from New Jersey to Arizona and 6 months later to New York . With the exception of a broken water pump hub in New Mexico car ran flawless. Good engines .
Its a shame thats an easy fix on these old engines. On a modern engine you got a bunch of junk in the way and more than likely gotta pull out the engine to get the valve cover and intake off.
Almost bought one just like this 30 years ago. A customer on my paper route was selling it for $300. His was 283 power glide car with very little rust. I had the cash in hand, and when I went to pick it up, my friend called me and told the car was damaged by a tree the night before during a severe thunderstorm. The tree landed on the roof and crushed it. He wound up selling it as a parts car instead. As for this car, I'd use a 231 V-6 and a 700R4 tranny. If you ever find another one of these, I might be interested. And if it's a wagon, so what! Would need to be an automatic transmission car though. Now THAT I could use to build the rusty Chevrolet of yupor fame.
I seen rust like that and a man still took it all apart and had them cleaned rust free and clean out the cylinder walls and either freed up the piston rings or got new ones and had it running again but until you had the head off who knows but great car anyway

Look at the double-antenned Bel-Air , someone loved it once. Altough it's finless :( Always happy to see someone caring for a straight-six non-hardtop car. Sad looking valves in there, a case study for sure. As for the ways they go, seems California is a land of 6-cylinder sedan Chevys ;)

Memories, my Grandfather bought one new in 1962, Belair, 4 door post, 6-cylinder, 3 on the tree, radio delete, no PS, no PB, as basic as you can get, just a heater. He did add plastic seat covers to preserve the material. Could not have cost more than $2400. No one had much money in those days for luxury items. A car was a luxury item in 1962. No frills transportation for work and grocery shopping. My parents bought a new 1963 Impala 283 V8 4 door hardtop and an AM radio for $2800. He thought that was too much. He should only know what I have now.
Good you are not calling all of the big 59-68 Chevys "Impalas", they were different trim names, Biscayne, Bel Air, Impala, Caprice and Impala SS. Full size Chevys are my favorite vintage cars,
Sorry to tell you Colorado cars don’t rust. Tate uses magnesium chloride not calcium chloride or sodium chloride which encourage rest! But Minnesota and Iowa both use tons of calcium chloride and sodium chloride. I lived in Colorado for many years and I’m originally from Minnesota where I live now part of the Rust Belt!
I dragged a 63 Impala 2D HT out of the bush in the late 90s. The sticker on the tag was 1974. The only visible rust was the rear quaters. The drivers floor was the worst, and there were holes in the trunk by the shock towers (or whatever they're called) but overall the car was straight. I took it all apart, but gave up and sold it. Haven't seen it since.
you should always pull the valve cover because the engine may not turn over because of stuck valves and if you force it over you bend push rods and destroy parts the best thing is to take the VC off tap the valves make sure they are all free then if they are pry on the flex plate/flywheel. I have got many engine unstuck and find that many are because of stuck valves not stuck pistons anyway just a little tip from someone that's been in the saving old cars game for over 25 years
I have a 235 engine thats not stuck. I think it needs to be donated to a cause... people are going to start fixing and driving these things again with the way the world is going...
I wasn’t there, but I might have tried it. It’s clear that engine was neglected and never cared for. It might have only been a blown head gasket. The slime on the rockers was most likely from the PCV being plugged up and the engine not breathing.
Still rebuild that motor I was going to use check make sure your block is not cracked or make sure your head is not worked you take a straight edge after you get it off and turn it upside down I know because I'm a mechanic by trade that's what I used to do but you have a great day and enjoy your day and merry Christmas

Theres a proper tool for that, and it wouldnt have risked breaking off a cpl teeth, cracking the bell housing, or worse a bar slipping and cracking your knuckles onto something rusty..You still have alot to learn..dont be pissed dude, I'm 40 yrs Gm and Porsche Audi ASE certified master tech..I wouldnt be where I am if I didnt learn and listen to ALOT of constructive criticism..happy holidays to you Ryan..

@@IowaClassicCars , I beg to differ. 235's are incredibly tough and pull great. That's what I run in my one ton Chevy panel. I pull a heavy trailer every day with it and have pulled stumps with that truck. I've also moved a couple of mobile homes, one of which was a 60 footer. The best thing is the fuel economy. I generally get between 12 and 15 MPG pulling a loaded 16 ft trailer and 18 to 20 MPG running empty. That's not too shabby for a one ton truck that weighs around 7,000 lbs. A stock 283 of that year won't have much more get up and go than a 235 and won't get the fuel economy of the six cylinder. I know because I have driven both the small block V8 and the six cylinder. Besides, I think you would be surprised what a souped up 235 can do. Anyway, each to their own. By the way, it's a shame about that engine. My guess is a busted head or block. It looks like too much coolant for a blown head gasket. Glad you saved another old Chevy. Edit: Oops, I miss read the "this" as "the". My apologies.

Take that car to the carwash and spray out under the valve cover. Pour a quart of oil in it. Then drain n fill with new or used oil. Start again. All Chevy 6 cylinders run. Well almost

It was very crusty, not just surface. Hence why i stopped right there lol
In my area, a local antique Chevy parts dealer has those heads rebuilt at a local machine shop. He gets $1500.00 plus your old head.
Stove Oil or Diesel in the Sparkplug holes overnight ,then change the Oil.
If it breaks free.

The coolant pouring out is a sign this engine needs a rebuild. Something is busted inside for sure.
A little cleaning....she will run again. Just antifreeze leaking past the gaskets.

Too cool a car too just let her go. 235s are a great motor. In the 60s we would hot rod them with a header and a two carb intake. Big difference.

Besides, I think you would be surprised what a souped up 235 can do. Anyway, each to their own.
By the way, it's a shame about that engine. My guess is a busted head or block. It looks like too much coolant for a blown head gasket. Glad you saved another old Chevy.

Take that car to the carwash and spray out under the valve cover. Pour a quart of oil in it. Then drain n fill with new or used oil. Start again. All Chevy 6 cylinders run. Well almost
