Jess, the same was true of bread. In the old days, there was often a communal bread oven. The old poem you sing to babies about marking it with a B, put it in the oven for baby and me came from that practice. Everyone made their dough at home, marked it and brought it to the oven. The bottom of the loaves would get some ash on it and the wealthy families sliced it horizontally and did not eat the bottom slice. That's where the term upper crust came from. Language is so interesting. Thanks for sharing that "eating high on the hog." Love it!
Wow so fascinating!
I remember my grandmother taking her dough to a communal bread oven in Germany to bake. That was during the 2nd World War, yes I am older than dirt!
And now people pay good money for activated charcoal to aid with the digestion...
YES! I loved hearing ALL the origins to the things I heard growing up.... (didn't have a pot to p!ss in or a window to throw it out of) referred to tanning hides
It's so very interesting just how efficient our ancestors were!!
@@irmibullinger1421 you’re not old, you’re just well seasoned.
Never have I stopped a video to comment before I've watched it all, but Jeremiah's comment "Sure, Baby. What's really going to happen here is this is all going to turn into Tomatoes!", as he gestures everywhere, just about has me dying here! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
i LOLed
@@talkandeattv Yep. It's a 'Don't be drinking anything, you'll be snorting it down your nose!' moment lol

Me too, I am soo in love with tomatoes too, that his statement was sooo right on😍😉. Love you guys!
Jess: "I want this picturesque." Miah: "Huh?! I'm shocked!" Me: Spits coffee across the room. - All kidding aside, looks amazing and cool to see it starting to take shape! :)
I was cracking up too! SO funny!
Lol... Same
Yesss! “Ok we can do it pretty”
100 years from now your descendants will be able show their children how this farm was built as you are documenting everything & we are also witnessing the whole process. It is really encourageable.
Wish you all the best.
Miah cracked me up when he said that "all this is going to be tomatoes" well at least it won't be a disappointment 😊
May I suggest, use a can of spray paint to mark the outline of everything. Flags are fine but, you will get a better visual perspective with the painted lines. And with painted lines an aerial view is even better. I did this in my front and back yards 30 years ago. There was NOTHING in my yards but grass, one tree in front, one tree in back and one shed that could not be moved. I climbed up on my house and took picture of my spaces then worked it out on graph paper. I then painted the lines and went back up on the house to take a look. I have not been disappointed in my decisions I made all those years ago! I know you have a lot more space but, try it.
GIS maps now are great to have.
And if your young kids are like my kids, they'll pull the flags to play with them!
I agree....outline the space with paint makes it a lot easier to see the end project.
Speaking as someone who needs to build a greenhouse and has no experience doing so, it would be amazing to see you build one with materials I know I can find to replicate what you are doing.
Miah has a video on how he made the original

@@thesharonroseful you are the real VIP 👏🏻❣
Shena Hicks if you don’t have your heart set on a glass window greenhouse, I had success making a greenhouse out of cattle panels. Lots of examples of those as well on You Tube. You can make it as tall as you need by building a frame at the bottom and attaching the panels to that. Have fun with whatever you decide.
@@kimberlykelly7280 actually I was just thinking of making a shed style green house. Seeing it made with materials I know a could buy easily like the sheets of corrugated plastic instead of windows would be more helpful to me. Of course, I will be happy to watch whatever they do. I only was trying to say that if they do use those materials for whatever reason, their are probably more people out there than me that would find that very ..
When laying out your paths, consider side by side parking! Having a cute parking spot near the glass greenhouse would be very practical
All of the "when to" "how to" info is so useful and timely, even though we may be small-scale. Thank you. I so appreciate your teaching married couples how to love and respect one another through your example.
Miah’s face after he says he has embraced the crazy is my favorite moment of this video 😂😂 such a real raw and authentic face to capture the moment of life you’re in and that just made my day. Praying for your family in this season what an amazing wild ride!
I absolutely laughed right out loud when Miah was “shocked” at your choice of picturesque look to the window greenhouse. SO funny. You two are so precious
Lol...
Okay, Jess. I hope you realize what a treasure of a husband you have in Jeremiah! He is so patient with this whole process. God has truly blessed you both. What a precious couple you are.
Praise God for His blessings! Sunrise, sunsets, rain, creatures, plants, rain and gentle breezes to cool our faces as we work in the garden! I am in love with life , God's creation blesses me.
Roots and Refuge Farm blesses me!
Thanks for all you do!
Stray strong! Stay close! Momma and Poppa... kiss lots!💛🙋♀️
Jess: "I don't need it substantially bigger"
Miah: **in his mind** WAIT! WHAT? **gets better footing**
😂🤣😂🤣
I really have found myself watching his reactions so much more closely 🤦♀️😂🤣😂🤣💀
My goodness you two are hilarious together! I love the dynamic you two have. God bless your relationship.
I’m loving Jeremiah’s sarcasm in the past few vids. 😂 Why not have a whole farm of tomatoes? 🍅 😋😁
O that's nothing new lol
I learn so much when I come here! Not only from Jess and Miah, but from folks in the comments too. This community is awesome! 🤗 🍅
It’s best to embrace the crazy 😜
So exciting. See it. Say it. Do it. That’s how magic happens. You, Jess, are a magician.🪄🥬🥒🌿🪄
Loving the gravel driveway. Trust yourself and your vision. This is going to be amazing!
Have you considered gravel dust all over the garden vegetables?
Miah is such a great husband and father. You can tell he really cares about Jess and the kiddos!
I’m noticing Mia did a great job with getting crisp edge lines with the gravel drive. My OCD appreciates small things like that lol
YES!! I noticed that too! haha
Jess you always amaze me with your ideas and plans…. You and Miah definitely belong together you both are very talented people and it shows not only in the garden but with your whole family 💚
I heard swales!!!so excited for y'all! I got two days to throw in a fall garden, WuFlu got my parents, so I all homesteading on standby! They are recovering by the grace of God! 🙏🏽❣️ Need the hands in The soil!
Aww..you planted a weeping willow. My favorite tree. You or your children will love laying under it in the summer months and look out over the pond. Even have picnics under it. 😁
Miah is totally the man meant for you Jess. The 2 of you together are hilarious...his comebacks to you are soo comedic, I die every time. You guys are so great together.
I love seeing this progress. It's like watching a child grow. Your new space is wonderful. I'm so proud of you guys!
The garden belt makes me think of like, driving down country roads and passing farms and different crops growing. I love it!
The driveway looks amazing! Gosh, this is all so exciting to watch and see your dreams come to life! Thank you so so much for sharing your journey, Jess 🥰🌿
You’ve probably already thought about this, but it might be a good idea to plant some deciduous trees on your property with thought to the fall colors. There are not a ton of yellow leaved trees in SC and it would be so lovely and unique to have a stand of multi colored trees. Just a thought. 😁
Yes, back along thewooded tree line, with the evergreen trees as a backdrop.
I can't wait to see all the things you grow there. I had my first pineapple ground cherries they are just like candy (garden candy). I will forever grow those thanks to you and your channel.
Aunt molly or new Hanover? 😄
@@andreacremeans1055 aunt molly!!!
We are about 3 hours from you in Gwinnett County, Ga, which is east of Atlanta. I dont know how far you want to go for windows, but many of the antique and flea markets around here sell used windows for $2 and up. We got two insulated french doors for $5 each that we use on either end of our greenhouse. We also have windows that we used for a window greenhouse that the neighbors complained about and the county forced us to take down. You can have them for free if you want to take a field trip to this area once you have your measurements worked out for your structure and a needs list made. Let me know in private and I'll give you our address or the locations of the markets I know have windows (in Loganville)
@LisaBolivar, I would love the markets you are speaking of as I am in Gwinnett too! Shoot, if Jess wants the windows, I will load them in our truck and take them to her! Road trip!
@LisaBolivar, I would love to know the names/locations of the markets you are speaking of as I am in Gwinnett too! Shoot, if Jess wants the windows, I will load them in our truck and take them to her! Road trip!
Is that the one in or near Commerce ?
I’ve been to that one a few times from upstate SC. It’s a lot of fun .
3 hrs is not far!!!
@@lavendercrowl5695WOW all these people from Gwinnett county, I am in Cobb
Jessica a man with patience I love it
I know budget can be private/personal, but I’d love to hear something about how you think about it with such a long term vision in mind. Even if only percentages or generalized numbers. Love watching this unfold as I dream big over here xo
Oooh, Find your native crepe mertle for the area!! Mimosa is so pretty, a sensitive, and nitrogen fixer that grows really well in the south. Beautiful but also Medicinal uses..you probably know about it. There's pods on trees now to start em up. Grow fast too. Helps in orchards 💚
Crepe Myrtles are beautiful. San Diego area has a lot of them and they are stunning.
@@judytieger8976 they're everywhere in Florida where I am 😍 I read an interesting article showcasing native plants, that the native kind is much better for pollinators of the crepe myrtle! I hadn't even thought of that difference before!
Crepe myrtle is a plumber's best friend. Crepe myrtle is "sewer friendly", the root system cracked our pipes, sewage backed up into our home, whole front yard was excavated to replace the pipes. All my crepe myrtle trees were removed. (I'm in Upstate SC)
Awww bear
Glad to see that you will do a glass window greenhouse.
Miah and my husband would have so much in common. This is exactly what we sound like when we are planning projects. He just patiently stands there with a measuring tape waiting on me to talk out my ideas. 🥰 God bless patient and loving husbands.
My man is the same way :) we are lucky ladies!
I ate my first Paul Robeson tomato that I started from seed, so proud. It was an experience!! 🤩 I will forever have them in my garden.❤ Thank you for your inspiration.🙏🙏
Hi!! I just got same tomatoes from seed last week and agree with you..they are yummy!!
@@colleentsoulas1387Hello, that's awesome!!!
Just came here to say I had a “moment” today with a Granny Cantrell tomato… and need to go somewhere people would understand. Also, I can wait to watch this garden unfold.
Doing the “Gotta wait for my husband to get home so we can watch this” dance. It’s not an easy one. 🙈
When you said there will be 4 feet between the greenhouses, my brain said "Not enough room for the snow that slides off. Oh... no... Not a problem where they live". It happens to me all the time when I watch youtubers from the southern zones plan and / or build. Up here nothing within 10 ft. of the road or drive so the blower / plow can dump the snow there, no gently pitched roofs, 'cause the snow won't slide off and the roof will collapse, water lines should be 4 to 5 feet below the surface of the ground and yes, orienting greenhouse to the sun, how the shadows fall, is important and if possible, attach it to the south wall of another building. Watching you and the love you put in your gardens feeds my soul. Thanks for sharing.
I love how you both see everything visually. And you say what you see and want with your gardens and greenhouse and so forth, Jess....and Miah sees it! And he GETS you:)
It's beginning to look a lot like gardens, all around your house. And the tarp that you laid down, so squarely upon the ground, -- will be the gardens of your dreams. Yahoo!
I love that Miah dreams your dreams right along with you, good man there.
Oh, I just remember taking an ag class way back in HS and one of the teachers showed us the hogs at the ag farm. They had placed the fed trough up on a platform so the pig had to set their forelegs on it and all their weight went to their backend, which made that area on their bodies thicker.
We did something similar for sheep while showing in 4-H. Great idea Janice.
Cutting off half their tails also makes their hind end thicker. Or so I've been told. They do it for jumpers so their hind quarters are too heavy for them to jump
Thank you guys for the way that you do your vlogs.I feel like I'm almost a part of your decision making when I can see and hear both of you discuss plans for things. It almost feels like I'm there..."Ok,we need to mark out where these high tunnels are going to be." Lol. Be blessed.
Jess this is so so exciting and I am so proud of you!! Faith and I pray for you guys all the time and HE hears all of our prayers and you are proof of that!!
I love how much you love growing tomatoes lol. I'm 100% Sicilian and fresh homemade tomato sauce is my thing. Taking tomatoes from your own garden is unbelievable delicious and so rewarding. Thank you for all your help over the yrs. I've learned quite a bit from you. I can't wait to see what you and Jeremiah have in store. So exciting!
Its coming along. Very nice.
Really exciting to see the first growing space develop and getting an idea of all the lovely flowers growing in front of the greenhouse.
Jess, when Jeremiah made his statement that all this is going to be tomatoes I burst out laughing. I could just envision you and Ben picking tomatoes and eating them right there in the garden. Thanks for bringing us along as you plot out the gardens, high tunnels and your lovely green house made of windows to come surrounded by beautiful flowers.
With love in my heart I share this: You can't go wrong if you set those high tunnels farther from the edge of the driveway but if you put them too close it would be a monumental effort to change it. Just make sure you leave enough of an easement between the two because you just never know…❤️
haha, we just shared an update video where we decided to move them back!!
@@RootsandRefugeFarm After I posted this I saw that! LOL I started watching the update today and I thought oh my gosh I forgot to warn them!
I quickly went back to this video, made this post and then resumed watching the update.
Didn't take long before I felt like Homer Simpson ... doh!
I started an 800 sq. ft. Cutflower Garden/Farm this year & it has been so awesome! It's so hard to explain the feeling of growing all these flowers just for pure enjoyment!
I come to these videos to soak in all the faith, love, hope, excitement and positivity and gardening of course. I truly believe it is helping me have all that in my life as well. Thank you so much. ❤️❤️🙏🙏
Love Myia
I love how well y'all work together...
Plus Tropical Storm Mindy w I’ll be bring you rain and possibly winds. Thoroughly enjoyed the video today. We really love being a part of your lives.
I've been cranking through a graduate course this week, and actually waited until the end of the evening to watch. This whole going to work thing is delaying my gratification of watching what you are sharing with all of us. Sending blessings from my home to yours!
The one mistake we made when we started was not leaving enough room for moving things ...we put in smaller gates which worked for small equipment but we ended up moving things ( is fences/ gates). At a later date....wish we had listened and planned for 12 ft gates
Driveway looks great and you can never have too many tomatoes.
The joy and excitement you both have doing these things from the start again with all the knowledge you have gained is so beautiful to watch 😍
Loved the point where Miah feins surprise at Jess's direction that the area around the window greenhouse will be picturesque. So funny...😂😂
I love the back drop of your property . All the trees around the perimeter . A beautiful part of the world. So green !
The image of you scattering seeds as you road your four wheeler through the fields, popped into my head when Jeremiah said what’s going to happen is this is all going to be tomatoes. I could just picture all the animals eating the vegetables in field living their best lives. LoL
Love Miah! Embrace that crazy!!
My dad was a butcher & used to make pickled pigs 🐖 feet. No hoof. Ha ha. And it was the best stuff ever. We smoked sausage with pork & venison & it was so nice 👍🏼 & liver sausage with rice was my favorite too when baked. I grew up on farm 350 acre ranch. Lots of venison & everything else you can imagine. Putting up veggies & canning was essential for large family that went through the depression times. Nothing was wasted. Every leftover scrap went to hogs or animals. The smallest potatoe was canned. And sauerkraut was big too. Make ur own in huge batches. In huge crocks. It was a great experience in my life & I do miss it 🙏🏻❤️😊
This is so special that we get to be part of the beginning of your new homestead. I love how natural and real you are Jess and we get to see love in action. Your husband your children your animals and the need to grow and you generously share this abundance of your love you fill all of those things with it and you let us also see it and feel it. Thank you so much Jess and Mia
Just a tip for the Willow tree my grandfather used to use pieces of water hose over fence wire the fence wire would run through the hose and he would make a loop so the only thing that touched the tree was the rubber hose so it didn't bite into the bark. Then tie the ends of wire to a post for strength. Love that Jess dreams and points and Miah the dashing engineer makes it happen. Oh we can do pretty over industrial functionality lol. Or you know this whole thing is going to one day be tomatoes 🍅. He loves his queen.
So nice to see it starting to take shape. I commented on last video but y'all didn't see it. I really enjoyed your devotional message and agree 100 percent. Keep up the good work and God bless you all.
I bless you till next time.
Can't wait to see your crape Myrtles!
Ohhh Bear…you’re sooo loyal 🥰
Your homestead is growing so fast. You and Myer are a great team. Have you given your new little vehicle a name yet?
Looking good. As an older woman I like the idea that you're putting your glass greenhouse and your high tunnels near the house. You guys are both in good shape but yes crazy things happen...
I live in Vermont we are getting ready to put things awY for the season. I’m grateful to have your adventures to live vicariously through this winter!! Bless you all🙏😍
Nice driveway. Glad to see you made it wide, most people don't .
It's so very cool to see how you two work together! When I picked your channel a year or so ago you had already been pretty much established at your other farm. We are getting in from the very beginning so to speak and seeing it as it unfolds!!! So exciting! Y'all are so cool!
I love seeing you and Miah working together planning 😁👍🏻
I’m glad your going with crape myrtles along the driveway, I’ve always loved them
It begins! Yay!
Hey , you might want to check with the county, state Cooperative Extension Agency for your fruit trees, berry vines. They gave me free, from the Wild life area here. They will be native to the area and grow better and have better yield of fruit, and bear sooner than bought one's. Just an idea, because you are new to area. Prayers, Blessings Always.
Dream Big Now You go girl!
Looks beautiful. Will there be another Pavilion in the future? Thank you for showing the process. Always inspiring.🤗🙏
Wow your Willow got big
If there is one piece of advice I have for y’all right now it is don’t overextend yourselves! Work smarter not harder. Mulch , Ruth stout, ….. you guys will have an amazing garden , in time. Great job 👏
It is going to be so beautiful! Use good wood on those raised beds cause it’ll last longer and be prettier! The driveway is gorgeous….all the pretty curves! The path to your future!
I'm so loving watching each detailed project, but secretly wish I had a fast forward button to see the end result.
@RootsandRefugeFarm Jess,I really love watching your excitement in the evolution of this new property. The title (if I remember correctly) of a movie with the late and wonderful Robin Williams comes to mind……..”What Dreams May Come”………..🥰💜
Can't wait to see your greenhouse.
I can already see this garden taking shape through your enthusiasm, Jess. The cut flower beds around the glass green house are so pretty ;)
I am doing what you are doing on a smaller scale. SO interesting to see you discussing, planning, fretting about how your design decisions today will effect you later on and hoping you are doing it right. Validates me a bit as I am doing it alone and really wish there was another person to bounce things off of. I cannot wait to see your gardens and mine. Carry on friends. I enjoy you all so much.
I have the worst headache rn and I'm happy to see you uploaded. It's a great distraction 💚💚💚
Woohoo! Can't wait to see what's next!!
I love the cut flower garden around the green house. Swoon!
May you be able to stay 30 years there. We just hit 30 years on our property. We are doing the re-imaging of space again. More gardening, painting the barns and house, the things that were ignored as our kiddos grew. 😁. It is a never-ending story. We plan another at least 30 more years now... ”Lord willin’, and the creek don’t rise’. 👍😁🤣🙏
I wish you the 30 extra years. Sound like you are as devoted as Jess and Miah. Enjoy the fruit of your work. 🤩
