I love Jess’s reaction when Miah said he was going to compost the turned up grass being removed from the new driveway and she made it sound like he had organised the equivalent of a romantic candlelit dinner. Just goes to show that Miah knows how to keep the romance alive and make his special lady very happy, he speaks Jess’s love language 😁

Well I'm a almost 71 year old great grandma and I am starting on my 4th homestead. I've been fascinated by the logistics of your move because I am going through the same thing. It is a minimum of six hours depending on the traffic to the new place . I have to traverse twisting, narrow switchback laden California 1 to get to the property. I've lost count of how many trips pulling a trailer as I move fencing, pots and cement blocks, bird baths, plants and trees ( 40 large olive trees dug up here on this ranch among other things) and garden supplies . I've done most of the outside stuff. Have a steel storage building up now and can move inside stuff. My first load was tubs of children's books. Septic is now in and approved. Things in California take so long for permits etc, Anyway your channel has been most helpful and encouraging. It can be done. Just itching to get my gardens and fruit and nut trees in but waiting to get electric lines in first since that will cross where the future garden is going. Oh those olive trees are all planted and set up with micro-sprinklers now.

The best thing to remember about tenacious plants is that their main roots are just battery plants, and the greenery are the solar panels that charge them. However, that main root/tuber also has another job, it has to create the solar panels too, which takes energy. This is why spraying doesn't work long term, but tarping, and then hand picking, as frustrating as that can be, does. Because if you do it whilst the plant is sending out the solar panels, it doesn't get chance to recharge, and eventually runs out of energy. It's done, just like a dead battery. All my no dig beds were created with cardboard and compost, straight on top of established lawns, full of perennial weeds, including dock, dandelions, couch grass, plantains, thistle, buttercup, and so many more. You'll still get weeds, we all do, but you know how this works, and if you need a little reminder, well, the wonderful Charles has just done it all in his new paddock too, and you can't get much worse than the dreaded bind weed. We've got this!

You should lay your gravel during the dark of the moon or the waning moon period. Mountain folk did everything according the signs for a reason. During the waning or dark of the moon, the water table in the soil is lower and packs better and your gravel won’t sink. The first weekend in September would be great but the dark of the moon is on September 6th. Top of the mornin from western North Carolina.

The old folks lived their lives by them. It’s a shame they’re being lost. And to those who question whether the signs are related to the occult or astrology, no, they aren’t. 🌺 🌼 🌷 I don't know if you are already planningt to this, but it would be great to have a round or U-shape driveway at the end of your driveway, by your house. The convenience in the years to come, will be very handy, and you could landscape the middle of the circle with flowers and anything else that your heart desires. With your talent in gardening and designing, it would a most beatiful centerpiece for anyone's eye's to behold as they, or you, pull up to the house. You could even place your starter plants and seed greenhouse there amongst it all.....a real show case. Please consider it, if you haven't already.
You just have to make the circle will be the right size for a gravel truck to be able to maneuver around it easily when they deliver gravel in the future to replenish the gravel . That's unless you decide to blacktop that part.

@@teresamariner4238 once the field has finished it's rest and rehab from being agricultural for many years, possibly. Right now a winter's worth of hay is about $900. We have a tractor but the implements to cut, rake, and bale hay are very expensive. It would be a decade's worth of winter hay for that equipment. Plus we don't have hay storage here for more than probably 45 bales, and we would need a barn for that.
Right now we have a deal with the local amish. We pre-pay and they do all the work and storage for us.

I may not be a homestead owner, but I have been a homeowner/gardener in GA for 17 years and I have witnessed how Bermuda grass behaves. You are right to cover it and move on. My guess is that you will be able to kill it now, but in a year or two, it will start creeping back in from the surrounding areas. It is crazy how it will grow so far down to come back up in a nice garden bed. And infuriating. So, enjoy a year or so of Bermuda-free garden beds. It has been so fun to watch y'all go through this journey. I know we will never have a property like yours so I am living vicariously through you. Thank you.

I love the thought of the glass green house in the middle of all the gardens. It just makes aesthetic and practical sense. I think that beautiful soil deserves to be used for at least this seasons growing. You can also use it as a base to those metal raised beds that you bought with a layer of bagged soil on top. adding cardboard and compost in the spring will just make it so much more fertile so either way it's win win!
