I think the bow of the Daughter to Mother is beautiful. Cannot help shedding tears. I just lost my Mom and this is the first Mother's Day without her. The one day when she would set aside the care of her family and let us spoil and do for her.
It's actually super nice of the Emperor to shut down the Cold Palace (although it was not actually shut down at this time in real life, it was years after this.) But for this show, it's one of the more empathetic things he did.
The emperor was so nice to her at some moments like this one. But he was so selfish :( he never truly thought about ruyi. This was mainly him fulfilling his wish of ruyi being his wife
If only he could have maintained this semblance of care towards Ruyi and not be so susceptible to gossip and schemes of yhe concubines. Goes to show, he truly never took the time to know who Ruyi really was. Unlike his mother.
This gets me thinking...Was Jia's sons still alive at the end of the show? Cause knowing how their dynasty collapsed due to Yawan's son at the end, Im wondering if Jia's eldest would have been better? He was mostly on par with Hailan son, just Jia's meddling and bad actions made him lose his chance at being crown prince.
One son had already been declared to never be Emperor because he risked the current Emperor's life in the horse stunt. Her other son was crippled in the leg, which sadly back then wouldn't have looked good for the Emporor, he's supposed to be a god to the people. In reality, this Emperor drained a lot of money and power from his son even after he gave up the throne so whoever got it was not in a great position regardless. After this current reign a series of poor Emperors, a constant struggle for power amongst the people surrounding them, and a quickly changing world crumbled the Dynasty in subsequent decades.
The Empress still salutes, it's why she does the knee bending. The idea is that the lower you are on the 'chain' the lower you bow. Because Emperess sits next to Emperor 'equally' she only bends her knee. If Empress Dowager was there she'd actually get on her knees. Also, it's not soup, it's porridge. Think something along the lines of oatmeal. So her stirring it is likely to re-mix it after it settled and separated.

The difference between this mother and daughter combo versus the first Empress is night and day. No pressure applied whatsoever, just sheer joy..
