- Roger's first appearance on the show.
Included is the Late Night band performing "My Generation" during the first commercial break.
On this night the band consisted of Paul Shaffer (keyboards), Buzz Feiten (auditioning for the guitar position that later went to Sid McGinnis), Will Lee (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums, subbing for Steve Jordan, who was in Japan touring with Steve Khan's group Eyewitness).
One of the best voices in rock. And he is still easy on the eyes, even today.
of all rock debates, the one certain is that ROGER has aged the most gracefully
It's 1984 ; Rog' is his splendid self, funny and - gee - so down to earth, interesting and amiable. Top bloke !
Very true and meaningful words from Roger at: 2:16 "I think good music should be left to the imagination. I think videos take something away."
I agree wholeheartedly with that statement. To me, the music matters much more than the visuals.
Agreed, but they’re are certainly music videos which do actually enhance the music. Cry - Godley & Creme, and Highwayman - Highwaymen come to mind.
My daughter got to see Roger perform for the first time on his 2018 Tommy tour, and she's going to get to see Roger and Pete together as The Who this May. So glad they're still together so I can pass my Who fandom on to yet another generation.
It's just a shame she couldn't see them with John and Keith. ☹️
Like always, very interesting; Roger gives great interviews
He’s Still Got IT…!!!!❤
I saw them in 1989 at the Toronto CNE. OPen air stadium on a beautiful summer night.. It was amazing.
Awesome 80s threads Roger!
A little Miami Vice inspired
I just saw him recently in Pittsburgh, and he still looks just as amazing, and sounds fantastic!!!
I would Love to see them!!!
"Don't think so"....HA. Year later, Live Aid, 5 years later Tommy 30 year anniversary tour. Today, still touring, because they're the fucking Who, and they're awesome.
everything Roger does is cool...everything.
God, Roger looks so amazing.
Love The Who and Roger or Pete are always good to watch.
Two things stick out in my mind from watching this.
1. Roger is the type that ages well. He still looks remarkably good.
2. Daves questions are really good and on-point. I dont think they're all pre-written either, he seems like he just wants to know something and asks a question. Kind of like how Larry King conducted interviews that were so watchable.
Roger was always bound to age gracefully. He has always been in really good shape and very muscular, he seems to eat healthy food, loves the outdoors and was never into taking drugs and rarely drank.
And I agree with what you said about Letterman. There are so many interviewers who talk over the guest or make it all too scripted, but this feels so relaxed and comfortable!
Daltrey has obviously taken care of himself by avoiding drugs. He looked pretty good at 40.
I remember hearing an interview with him from the '80's, and he said he tried to do something athletic every day. And, on top of that, he never indulged in drugs the way so many rockers did. In his autobiography, "Thanks a Lot Mr. Kibblewhite," he covers why he stayed away from drugs, and I think Keith Moon's physical disintegration and death served as a great "negative example" for him.
He looked better at 40 than I did at 20.
Great interview. Love the band!
He was very good looking and still is
What a gent
I love Roger ❤️💕
what a ROCK STAR...being a guitar player i always wanted to meet a lead singer with his easy going personality...let me tell you, its very rare
I've met Roger and he's a love. Great to talk to, gives awesome hugs. Yet he doesn't allow nose kisses.
He wasn’t always considered easy going.
Maybe because he started as a lead guitarist.
Thank God The Who is "Still Around Today!"
WHOMEWHOYOU yo
Thank You !!!!!!
Roger what a stud
Great rendition. Go Will
Thank you so much for posting this!
Thanks for posting.
Gentleman rocker is Roger
Damn, he's so cute and funny!
The legendary Steve Gadd!
great video
This was before the many unnecessary Who reunion tours. It would have been nice to see the former members go on with their lives as Roger was here, without going back to what was over.
He is handsome here.
Wow Roger was only 40 here!
I brought my under the raging moon album to my hairdresser back then to get the roger look
Wow
40...looking like he's in his mid-20s. Roger's obviously up there now, but he aged great, well into his 60s and still had a youthful appearance. I think a lot of it was Roger's attitude: stress-free, don't-give-a-fawk attitude.
Pete could like this jazzy organ version of my generation
Rock gods. Him and plant
They need to tour together
They've performed together for charity concerts I believe. Roger said that Robert is one of the only friends he had in the music industry, and they're still good friends today, so it's a possibility
Saw them live at the NEC Birmingham (UK) five years after this. So Roger was wrong. Thankfully.
This was one year prior to his Under a Raging Moon album release and tour 1985.
Almost six years to the day that Keith Moon passed away.
Staffer appears AWFULLY early after Letterman says bye at the end. Just couldn't wait I suppose.
Gerard Mulligan, the segment producer. He and every other segment producer greeted the last guest right after Dave closed the show. This was normal.
His laugh was gr8 lol at 259
'talkin bout my generation'!
Paul and the band killed My Generation!!
Roger the dodger 💙 .
Another reason Roger probably didn't like making videos was, from what I understand, MAKING them can be dreadfully boring. On one of the Queen DVD's, Roger Taylor talks about how you're standing around forever while they're setting up lights and stuff, and then you spend forever redoing individual segments of the song, and so forth. And then when they started doing conceptual videos, like the one Queen did for Calling All Girls, you've got this director throwing some crazy story line at you, saying "Trust me, it'll look good when you see it on the telly", and then when you DO see it on the telly, you're thinking, "What the bloody hell is THAT supposed to be?!".
Wish all Queen 'songs' were played as often as - God forbid - "Calling all Girls"....
he got it right about the £!
A 16lb Trout!!!
Love Roger. Letterman is such a creep
Visual riot. RD looks like a tan Greek God and DL looks like the gawky Mad Magazine mascot
😂
Nice outfit
16lb trout? Frankentrout.
Did NTNON even exist in America?
🤔Tommy? Quadrophenia?
I guess Don Johnson influenced Roger as well.
Actually this interview is pre- Don Johnson Miami vice
He kind of looks like Chris Elliott
