I was just tonight, while doing a walk around my neighborhood and listing on headphones, noticing how good Kenny Jones' drumming was on Face Dances. Really beautiful and elegant fills during songs such as, "Daily Records," and, "Another Tricky Day." I think it was hard for fans to immediately embrace him just because of how much they loved Keith Moon. But Kenny Jones really was a stellar musician. Tomorrow night as I walk, I'll listen to his work on, "It's Hard."
It's insane that Roger was talking about how old the footage of the early Who was then, when it was only about 12, 13, 14 years earlier back then. Now this is 35 years ago !!. It's mad how time flies. I remember 1979 as if it were just yesterday, as I was 16 years old, and then, 10 years or so earlier seemed as long ago then as it does now, compared to what 1979 seems now.
Great to see this again 😊,I remember getting up early Saturday morning at the time to watch it. I used to play my Kids are Alright soundtrack on vinyl constantly.
Mmmm Roger is so gorgeous- down to earth and sweet. I would die on the spot if he called me 'love'! I have met him though, and had a hug... I wish he hadn't cut his hair - although I love his McVicar hair too... And the film is great! Kenney seems like a sweetie- I wonder what happened between him and Roger. It wasn't easy having to replace Moonie.
Listen to the drumming on Face Dances and It's Hard. Kenny was just not up to the task. Roger mentions it directly in his autobiography. The music was crying for something more, and Kenny just wasn't playing in a style that could deliver the punch that Pete had intended. I remember feeling really confused and deflated when those albums came out because the drumming was so 'session' sounding.
Entwistle and Townshend loved playing with Jones. He did an admirable job on both albums, got rave reviews at the time and was sensational live. Daltrey's issue with Jones may have been personal.
I actually remember watchng this. Kenney Jones was a semi regular on Swap Shop before he joined The Who. The beginning of the end. The answer is The High Numbers BTW.
Nonsense. The Who did not die on September the 7th, 1978, nor did they die on June the 27th 2002. The Who will live forever. We fans will make sure of that!
Kenny Jones glorious substitute of Keith Moon not was easy but he was the great drummer of SMALL FACES/FACES.present in the last Who albums 81/82 and the last fantastic tours before Pete decided stop the band creations. But The Who returned fantastic tours in the XXI century from 99 to 2015.with zak Starkey on drums.Majestic Good bye
Roger liked Kenney as a person but never thought Kenney was the right drummer for The Who. However, I think by the "farewell tour" in 1982 Roger realized what an amazing talent Kenney was...and so did the fans. We loved Keith but Kenney was so much more a true "musician"..not to mention he was athletic & good looking, could handle the press, didn't do drugs, was reliable, etc. I think Simon Phillips is an amazing drummer but for The Who he was too "technical" and we missed Kenney. I saw the Who in 1989 and loved it but in many ways it was generic compared to the great shows of 1982....and Kenney was missed. These days, its hard to argue that Zak Starkey is a perfect fit but Kenney Jones will always be my favorite... Keith Moon not withstanding!
Sorry Paul, I respectfully disagree. I was surprised at the pedestrian drumming approach Kenny took to the stuff Pete was writing in the early '80s. It never sparkled.
P-BIZ……great shows from 1982? I saw many of the shows from that tour. Pete looked so uninterested. I think he was happy it was over. He was exhausted from touring. Just wanted the tour to end and call it a career. And Roger’s voice was not good either. He sang like he had a cold at every show.
P-BIZ……but the comeback tour in 1989 was much different. Pete was excited to do the Tommy anniversary tour. The shows were good and very entertaining. You could tell The Who were happy to be back on tour.
LeftMeNot Why tho? And how come Zak starkey is not included as a full member of the who? He's been playing drums for the Who for 21 years! Longer than Keith was, I'm not saying he's better than Keith Because he ain't! and the legendary Keith moon could never be replaced! But Zak is still a great drummer and played On endless wire, So Zak should definitely be included as a full member of the who, And how come roger did not Want kenney to be a full member? And how come Pete did? It seems a bit strange to me.
Roger and Pete have both expressed great love for Kenny! He was great with the Faces!!! But Listen to the drumming on Face Dances and It's Hard. Kenny was just not up to the task. Roger mentions it directly in his autobiography. The music was crying for something more, and Kenny just wasn't playing in a style that could deliver the punch that Pete had intended. Just listen to the end of You Better You Bet! God what a let down! I remember feeling really confused and deflated when those albums came out because the drumming was so boring.

oh the wonderful innocence when rocks stars had talent and kids were interested in real music and interviews were not hurried and stupid!

I hear you mate!
Wishing you a happy 60th this year!
Yep. And I’m reading your comment 8 years into the future.
Poor Kenney didn't get any questions except "Whar do you have to do to be a pop singer?" 😂
Great to see this again 😊,I remember getting up early Saturday morning at the time to watch it.

This is a blast from the past! Just before Roger cropped his hair for the film McVicar.

@@ltyr2002 not true, and i'm still waiting to hear why it is (besides jones not being keith moon).
Must of been one of Rogers last interviews with Long hair
Interviews were more informative than entertaining back then - all the more interesting for it.
"What's your ambition?" Roger laughs his ass off.
Thanks for uploading JeanPierre, terrific stuff.
Roger and then Kenney waving at their kids through the screen was cute AF, too wholesome
fuck me its Noel Edmunds ...
Daltry is a fucking legend. Inspiration to us all. Looks about the same now 30 years later. Say to to drugs...
Roger's looking soo hot!
I actually remember watchng this. Kenney Jones was a semi regular on Swap Shop before he joined The Who. The beginning of the end.
The answer is The High Numbers BTW.
Gary Kirby I'm the face and Zoot suit to be exact....The High Numbers.....love it!
lol poor kenny. what a tough position to be in
I agree with that! I don't envy anyone stepping in at that time!
Shame Kenny didn't get asked any questions - they could have seen that coming :)
79 doesn't seem long ago to me either, they did a gig this year where there was a tragedy
Cincinatti
He was right too. The Who, for all intents and purposes, died on September 7, 1978.
Nonsense. The Who did not die on September the 7th, 1978, nor did they die on June the 27th 2002. The Who will live forever. We fans will make sure of that!
No Roger! Don't cut your hair! I like it this way. But then, he did not look bad with short hair.
He originally cut it for a movie role. (McVicar. I've always preferred it long and curly, even as he got older.)
The Faces studio drummer was Mick Waller.
Kenney rules!
are you insane , the worst thing that ever happened to the who .
The High Numbers
The Detours?

This had to be a little icy. Pete demanded Kenney be admitted as a full quarter ownership in the band. Roger fought it but what could he do?

Jackie robinson Zak has turned down full membership of The Who.
@@MichaelCrutcher maybe he came from money, don’t know 😅
@@MichaelCrutcher yes, he wanted to keep his options open for his other band, can't think of the name right now.
Seems nobody involved can spell Kenney...
where is the old footage? what was it?
ippolytos1 I'm sure Roger is referring to " The Kids Are Alright", which was released in 1979 and of course contained early footage of the band.
If rodger had said that about eating his animals from his farm now days there would be complants from vegans and vegetarians and animal rights
Love Jones work in the Small Faces/Faces but maybe he was too safe for the OO'. Then again any drummer is safe compared to Keith Moon, ha ha.
Yes! "Safe" and The Who are an odd fit.
Who is this Kenny
Now for the real thing see this: th-cam.com/video/UNKupk8u1Zk/w-d-xo.html
I don't think Pete has a lot of laughs...
