    I saw a box at a hobby store. It said teach yourself to fly. It contained a small plane called a UMX Ember. In my back yard and at a ball field I taught myself to fly. Sometime after that I saw a T-shirt for sale that said, "Fly crash repair repeat". That phrase is where my story started. I moved up from that micro plane to others like the Champ, Sport Cub and Timber.
    With the Timber I taught myself to do basic aerobatics. Then I discovered there was an AMA field and club near me. I moved up from micros to the basic T-28, Leader 480, Flite-test Scout. Then I moved up to the 1200mm T-28 with flaps and retracts, then other warbirds and larger planes, sport planes and eventually jets.
    One day someone asked me if I would teach them to fly. So I did. I used the training system (buddy box) available on the radios I was using. It went well and then another person asked. Then another and another and before long I was the go to guy in our club that people came to for flight instruction. Then one day someone asked if I would maiden their new plane and set the trims. That went well. You can guess what happened after that. Then one day someone got their plane caught up high in a tree. They asked me if I could get it down. That went well and you can guess what happened after that.
    So today I have 4 jobs in my club. Be a friend, a flight instructor, a test pilot and a search and rescue guy. Having friends is the best part.

    I'm a newish rc pilot who started during the pandemic, just getting comfortable with my Timber and a few littler planes and about to start ground school, since both rc and real flying seemed inaccessible when I was a kid, so quite glad to find your channel. But there's a stereotype you missed: the guys who every single time you show up try to convince you to fly gas planes instead of electric, or balsa instead of foam. Occasionally they will resort to their third favorite out of three known conversations and talk about how horrible SAFE and anything made or sold by Horizon is. It never ends!

      @adamgoldberg7330 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Also another pandemic new pilot here. Just found your channel recently but I appreciate the humor, I wish I found you when I was crashing CONSTANTLY and was ready to give up all hope. Luckily I had a buddy who was my RC plane sensei who gave me a lot of the sage advice I now hear on this channel. I can thank him for keeping me in the hobby. And for forcing me to get my PPL. And for now getting me addicted to building Tamiya RC kits. In fact, he's actually a menace.

      Horizon is doing more for beginner flyers than any of the large scale/balsa manufacturers. I just recently got the balls to buy and fly a used balsa and nitro plane. I think I'm gonna go to a gas instead of nitro, but the wood frame handles really well. Still love my timber x though

    Lol, I do fly at a nice and large SoCal rc airfield... except it's free and no membership needed, and it's one of those where it's very community, but we have this one guy that has a very large balsa 3d plane and does yell people off his area..hahahaha

    What a nice RC flying channel! Started out in RC planes in the early eighties which got me flying full scale. Came back to the hobby just before retirement. Returning to RC after a few years was almost like no time had passed; I remembered almost everything.
    The hobby has changed quite a bit in terms of technology, kits available, new rules as well as other things. Despite the changes, passion for model flight is still there.

    Im not a new pilot but i still do newbie mistakes😅. Just today i had to qlue a hyperbibe because my elevator was reversed and i forgot to check before flight. Well my plane came down with full throttle and the front split in half. I quess you really have to learn from mistakes😂

    I learned to fly on a 3 channel glider using a hi-start for launching. Than I moved on to 4 channel powered flight both fixed and rotary wing models. Slow but steady is the only way to go. Always take baby steps and learn for your mistakes.

    Ive always loved your stol at sketchy places videos with funcubish planes. Whats your favorite stol/play around plane these days? Is there one with lower stallspeed then the og funcub? I had the durafly tundra, didnt really like it bc it stalls pretty violent when it goes, i now fly the original funcub and like it much more but its always fun to try something else, plus it has a terrible paintjob from previous owner😁

      The Fun Cub still is the top performer when it comes to lowest wing loading with a nearly 2:1 power to weight. However, since that's nearly impossible to get anymore, the Timber is now our go-to.

    I'm the older flyer, but I except my limitations & don't fit your profile of an old flyer...more like a kid flying his first plane. The field is dynamic and I have so much fun because you never know what's going happen it's like going to a comedy fest ! Most of my crashes are my fault. I'm not sure why some guys just can't call it what it is? One time I actually pulled the throttle down to power up and crashed...I laughed because it was so stupid of me and everyone wanted to know what happened after your foamy is in a thousand pieces...I screwed up, " I said, " and powered down instead of up ! It doesn't bother me to make mistakes, but when a friend crash I don't say much I just share in their loss & ask if there is anything I can do. Latter if it the crash is so bad there is no way to fix it I offer to buy it for parts, giving them a little money to possibly replace the lost plane; they are surprised and feel better and I go thought the pieces, fix , clean, and resell the parts. I also experiment a lot and maidens on experimental planes often go wrong so I'm labeled a bad pilot, go figure. I've been flying for 20 years, I've worked on just about every real jet, fighter, tanker, cargo, and piston plane & engines/turbine out there. I'm aircraft tech. I have a aeronautical degree and an A & P license, I've also done extensive electrical work, wiring, and troubleshooting, but most flyers in my field know that. I don't say this to boast myself Im just giving you my experience that can be untalize by anyone with in the field, but some have to much pride they can't ask someone who knows the answer, rather they asked the popular flyer cause that's cool. My info is your info. If they don't want experience whatever, I'm there to fly. If you don't want to pick my brian that's cool. I can still learn things and will listen to anyone who has ideas on a crash theory or a better way of doing things, even kids can teach you stuff. I can always lean something from listening. When there an obvious issue on a plane crash where a crowd develops and everyone has their own theory I stay out of it and let them figure it out. I fly on merit. Your flying habits mirror the way you are at else where. The behavior in flyers you talk about in your videos have a bigger meaning, but are very accurate, funny, fun to watch if you don't fit one of the profiles, and just love flying.
    Old man excuses. My eyes are bad, I couldn't hear the motor, my reflexes are slow, except for betting my grandson to the ice cream, my leg hurts, I have short term memory, you young ones, I do fly more trainers...ha, ha, ha

    Yeah ... costs. Don't forget ... to join any club with a field you MUST join the AMA. That's $70 bucks. Then the club has yearly dues ($100) AND the "initiation fee" (another $100). That's almost $300 and I haven't even broken anything yet. I joined 2 clubs (up to $600) ... and NOBODY ever had the time to teach me to fly. Not once. And about the AMA ... just what are THEY doing about the new FAA regs? About the same as the NRA (not GOA) is doing to help (non-fudd) gun owners ... which is nothing. I'm going to leave my bigger planes in the basement ... I just bought Volantexrc Sport Cub 500 and I'll hack away in my back yard until I learn on my own ... or turn the Cub into junk. It's the way I learned C/L back in 1962.

    • @TailHeavyProductions
      @TailHeavyProductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thankfully not all clubs have those sorts of fees to join. Growing up, it was free for AMA (under 18) and $40 for our club. Now it's $70 for AMA as an adult and around $60-100 for the clubs around us (with no hidden fees). That's still half the cost of one decent park flier so we opt to keep paying to keep local clubs/communities alive. We do love flying at small parks or even in our own backyard too, though! Do what you enjoy most. 😀👍

    Pushing yourself is taking flying seriously, and lacking with many flyers. Flying at locations not allowing rc flying is not good. I've heard too often the reason they fly at parks is they can do whatever they want. That coupled with being at an unapproved location does the hobby no good. Did you receive support for the hobby from your family?
