This was a really good board repair to learn from! Multivariate fault causing no backlight, on the same machine that was turning on/no brain due to simultaneous corrosion on CPU vcore circuit *AND* issues under the PCH? WOW!
...and I bet blackberry the cat, this won't pass 20k views in a week. I personally don't care about what videos get a viewcount, but it's really interesting after dozens of comments saying "Why don't you produce board repair videos anymore?", that came in over the past three days... I count over 20 board repair videos in the past 40 days... and all of them together get less views than a video on a bad contractor that gets 300,000 views in a day, where this has... 3000.
What people put in the comments they want from my channel, and what people actually appear to want from my channel, seems diametrically opposed.

FWIW I rarely watch the edited version of a repair I've already seen on stream, at least not soon after. Others may do the same.

Louis Rossmann Its an impressive video, but maybe not a profitable repair (assuming it actually took a lot longer than the edited version). A bit like your discussion of choosing food orders, new and complicated is not always appreciated.

People want a full repair video that only takes 15 mins to watch
Same as people wanting instant repairs when you don't have parts
More editing but maybe time stamps in the description where issue found and issue fixed points are so they can jump to them
Not everyone can or should be pleased

It is easier to remove the bridges on the connector if you tilt the board up in the air so that the tip points upwards. You also want the tip tinned farther back so that the solder can move back from the tip. I use a wide double bevel blade on TQFP packages. you helped me learn how to replace BGA and QFN so I figure I should try and help.

I recently bought a MacBook Pro, my first ever Apple device. The reason? I recently moved to a new research lab that pretty much runs 100% apple and very specialized equipment like electron microscopes.
The file cross compatability of the special file types out putted by the microscope turned out to be such a pain as well as just working with and transferring files with colleagues was such a pain.
In the end multiple PhDs and master's students working on high level neuroscience research just have better shit to do than to fuck around with file compatability.

Pagemaker was limited but what it did, it did easily and quickly. I liked using it. I never used Quark. It was known to be very finicky but powerful according to what I heard. Really expensive too. The Mac OS was a bit less robust back then. System 9 was pretty horrible and crashed a lot.

    • @3polygons

Serif's Affinity Publisher for the win (53$ purchase only, no subscription)...but it is yet lacking some features, compared to the current (expensive) QuarkXpress and the (subscription based) industry leader, Adobe InDesign. I've handled Page Maker (usually paired with the glorious Freehand for graphic design tasks), XPress and now recently InDesign and Affinity Publisher. As a freelancer, am sticking with the latter, as my clients don't have high requirements in the publishing/editing area. As these apps are all mostly for book/magazines editing. Tasks where you need to handle a lot of text, several pages... I also have Affinity Photo (~Photoshop) and Affinity Designer (~Illustrator). For design you have also Xara Designer Pro or the cheaper Xara Page & Layout. But am not to fan of Xara's products and the latest direction of things, there (putting most attention on a somewhat online/subscription based system). Some people is fine with renting a software. I ... don't, I purchase permanent licenses.
To make posters (or flyers, brochures, etc) is often better path just a graphic design package (illustrator, Affinity Designer, Xara Designer Pro or Xara Page & Layout). And some people just a raster app like Photoshop or equivalent for that (btw, PhotoLine is a fabulous app for that, too. Hugely underrated and deserving more fame, as Affinity's, dirty cheap, too). I was forced to do so for years at a company where they had only Photoshop and did not want to buy anything else, lol.

@@3polygons Have to agree on Freehand. So easy to learn. I hate Illustrator. I also used Canvas back before it went PC only. I liked its ability to integrate raster with vector art. • @3polygons
      @3polygons 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@marscruz
If saving for future reference, here's a bit more info. Remember this all changes pretty fast. Even in 3 months (in that time, some of it would need some modifications...! ;)
Yes... I am one of those who never liked Illustrator. But had to learn it. Affinity Designer brings back the joy. :) IMO, illustrator is NOT a good example of good UI/UX.
Xara Designer Pro or the much cheaper Xara Page & layout is probably the one having more of a mix of raster and vector. But I believe Xara is kind of out for you, as is Windows only.
Affinity Designer though, counts on a "Pixel Persona" embedded, a raster mode for fast stuff, or sketching fast to do your vectors over that later. I kind of... prefer just a good raster app, and a good vector app. But is an added value, as a small raster editor inside the vectors app.
For my vector work, I use a combination of Affinity Designer (btw, you have all the affinity apps in Mac OS, iOS and Windows) and an open source free tool, Inskcape, as the few functions not yet present in Affinity Designer, surprisingly enough, you have them in inskcape (1.0 beta works well on the mac, not so the previous inkscape options). But the workflow and print functions, the UI in general, is better in Affinity Designer.
For a raster tool, I am certainly biased to Affinity Photo, but Photoline is also available on the mac, and is EXTREMELY good. Not as UI firendly As Affinity Photo, but with a lot of functionality. To the point it has functions not present in Photoshop (of course, it goes the other way round, too) neither in Photo. An ideal setup would mean having the two purchased, they are dirty cheap.
I am mostly an illustrator, so, painting apps are key for me, too. But is not so for most people, business owners, etc. Anyway, just to mention that for painting and drawing, for me the best, most round app is clipstudio ( www.clipstudio.net/en/ ).
      So, links :
serif.com (for all the Affinity apps: Photo, Designer and Publisher)
inkscape.org/release/inkscape-1.0/?latest=1 (for the free inskcape, but the 1.0 beta, is the one working well in Catalina. I'm on Windows, but I'm aware of this)
      www.pl32.com (Photoline)

QuarkXPress, for editing/publishing purposes (editing books, magazines... anything with a lot of text and several pages), yep. Really good, but a bit too expensive. The main industry standard, though, keeps being InDesign, as most things Adobe are. The bad part with adobe is that you can't purchase it anymore, is subscription based. But yep, it somehow still exists, keeps being somewhat updated. But for many cases what people need for their business brochure, or graphic design of other nature, is more of a graphic design app. And for that there are several options. Besides Adobe Illustrator, you have one thing from Serif that you can purchase (a purchase, not a subscription, luckily) for just 50$, and is almost as capable. it's called Affinity Designer. They also sell an equivalent to Photoshop , called Affinity Photo. Also around 50 bucks. I have 'em both (I'm a graphic designer, a freelance), they're pretty good. And they also sell a competitor to InDesign and QuarkXPress, called Afinity Publisher. But it's lacking some features that the two giants have: they're adding those with every free update. Often the issue comes with someone needing to open a file in native format, as the specs are kept secret often, or the needed info to be able to code full importers. Or even just that you can't fully translate all from one app to another, not fully, as some features present in one, are not in the other, or simply, they work too differently. Super common of a small business owner having a whatever file with some key stuff in it, and unable to open or convert it. There are some ok converters out there, but most can only do a half job, or a bad one.

3:54 Well this is a tool basically, you invested your free time for learning how to repair electronics, some people invest time in developing software and/or use it for their needs, a lot of people and companies do (TH-cam for example). In a sense it is mandatory to know the tools you are using, because there are not always affordable options you can choose from, like GUI tool that is going to help you develop some program, or base for it that is not going to screw with your resources from using this GUI tool, like charging you from every purchase of your product, or it may broke for reason you don't know after using this tool for a long project, and you can't solve it because TOS is not allow you to make debug, or some other hurdle, that's why people use open source tools for example. Take programming language for example. People like Richard Stallman advocate for safe to use software so that it doesn't haunt you when you being reckless when trusting some non-free software that doesn't even tell you what it is going to do with your life. You are take responsibility not for using this software, but how you aware of it's capabilities, that's why you read a documentation for some program. By the way, when you do this, it pays you back for all consumed free time, and serves you eternally. For simple uses like you described, sure, it is more convenient, but you can simply read a manual for cp utility, configure it how you like it and use it for ever. Maybe I missed a point.

The "costs time" on open source happens due to interface mismatches. Closed source hides that issue, does not remove it.

    • @kilrahvp

Those interface mismatches result from the various groups all only caring about their own project and not the actual user experience of the whole system. But that's what matters to users, nobody cares whatever issues are hidden by closed source as long at the features they need and the choices they want are there.

How much more expensive would it be to seal these boards with some kind of water repellant coating? I mean you'd think in a $3500 product with holes in it so that moisture form a sneeze or a drop of water can ruin it that $20 of sealing on the board at least in areas that are likely to get wet wouldn't be unreasonable, or at least some effort to seal the gaps so water can't get to the board.

@@macktheripper7454 That is why I discourage people from recommending to run a Linux distro in a VM. It can go well but this is not for newbies! Just recommend people to try out the distro on a live-USB and it will work fine. Maybe a part of the problem is that many people who show Linux distros don't have a capture card or don't want to bother to use it for this purpose. Anyway, a Linux user doesn't have to use VM's for Linux in general.
