Well, if you know your Black History, you know that the white man hated Nat Turner then and now. Because he had the courage to go against the brutality of the Slave masters. So, to all of those who went to see the movie and like myself understood and loved it, I say to you thank you for your support of our Black Brothers, Nate Parker.
It was a really Great Movie! However I knew and Predicted they were going to give us a watered down version, of this movie! This is why white people bought the Movie Rights: So that they could control the Narrative and the Content! To keep them from looking as Evil as the Really were and Are! Other then this, the Nat Turner movie was a Great Movie! The best three scenes in the movie to me were, when, Black Men got Feed Up with White men Rapping their Wives! And decided too Protect themselves and family Members from the Wickedness of the White Race! By forming their own small Army to fight against the Wickedness of White people! That were destroying their families and Lives! The second best scene, no matter how Horrible it was! It gave us the truth, about how Wicked White People Really Are, and were! And that was when, they showed, Seven innocent Black People Hung in a Tree by Whites for no Just Reason at all! Other then being Black and the real Children of God: Which whites have always known, but don't want to Admit! Because they are their Real Children of Satan, and they know it! So this is why we got this watered down version of the Nat Turner Movie! However the third best scene was when Nat Turner killed his Slave Master! How Cool and clam he was in doing it! It was like he Created a Monster or a Bad Virus: And had too get rid of it! He wasn't Killing white people, because he wanted too, but because he had too! Now I know I said the three best scenes but their is yet another 2 that I need too talk about! So the fourth best scene is when he challenged his Slave Masters with the Bible! And defeated them! And was Brutally Beaten for Challenging them! And the fifth best scene, was when he was talking too his wife, and she told him, that they were Killing innocent Black People because of his Rebellion, and was not going too Stop Killing them, until they caught him and Killed him! So when he heard this, he willing gave his self up, too be killed in order to protect his people, from being killed farther by whites! I liked when they asked him do you have something to say just before they Hung him! And he said I'm ready! And one more thing before I go! The little Black Girl that played the role of an Angel! I know that scene just jacked up white people's Minds! A Black Angel! I know that hurt their Pride! But if they think this scene, hurt their Pride! Just wait until Jesus, Yeshua get's back to separate his people from the wicked, and the things of this world! And remember this that he is Coming Soon too get his People! Tell My People That I am Coming Soon!
Melvin Keelen I knew they were going too water this movie down! However it still survived their cutting out of the most brutal scenes! Not that I like too see violence in movies! But we all know how things really went down, back in those days! Just like we know how things really goes down in these days! Thanks for your reply! Take care of your self!
Mr Woods is generally very clear and insightful regarding the film industry. I have listened to several of his critiques and have found them to be both informative and enlightening. Not just for the cultural significance of black film but also for its political ramifications. You can see him struggling with that aspect of the industry here. He is clearly disappointed with the moderate level of violence depicted in the film pointing out that this is the apparent compromise that Nate Parker made in order for the film to be made. I understand his perspective especially as it relates to the power of imagery but I believe that his disappointment in not getting that incendiary project prevented his appraisal of the movie itself!
Hello, my Brother. Thank you so much for your support. My attempt to critique Nate's film was indeed very problematic. First of all, we were under orders not to say anything about BOAN until a set date. Secondly, I wanted to support this picture because of its potential to be of historical importance from a black cinema perspective. And finally, I did not want to miss my bus which was due to leave for NY the next twenty minutes at the time of our filming. It is important for all of our viewers to remember that my analysis of black imagery is a historical perspective. My question to be answered of this portraiture is simply this: Out of this racist white culture, is it positive, progressive, and balanced. Peace and Blessings!
Alright, I listened to the whole thing. Thanks for the discussion. I shared my comments because I just want to do my part to help black folk know what we need to know. I saw Birth three times. I thought it was awesome! I don"t care if the white folk give Nate an Oscar. He gave Black folk something beautiful.
I enjoy Charles Woods demeanor and poise in this review. I know it's wrong to assume but his mannerisms show he's not too impressed or taken aback by the film. He says it's well made, and that may be so. However, reading between the lines I think there is no way this film could've been greenlit unless it depicted harsh punishment against rebellious slaves. I enjoy the interpretation of the Bible and religious as a means to control blacks. Blacks couldn't learn math, science or secular literature. However, they were forced to learn the Bible as a means to justify their enslavement. the Bible is the tool of the serpent.
cubedmack That's what I read. I'm not watching this film. Hopefully we can get a faithful adaptation of the Nat Turner story. I'll save my money for the Thurgood Marshall biopic.
jesushateswood OK, nothing surprising about that. I'm almost certain the film will focus on Brown v. Board of Education. That case dealt with segregated schools and the inequality between black and white schools. So I expect liberal whites in that film.
All the Black entertainers, athletes, and millionaires should have donated to this film that way the brother could have went in as far as graphic depiction of brutality against whites.
They are turning blacks away by telling us the movie is SOLD OUT!! So go see Madea, you know the movie where a black man dresses up like a woman and acts like one too.......but first peek into the SOLD OUT "Birth of a nation" theater and you will see 100+ empty seats......THIS IS SO SAD.....I counted 46 white movies this year that had whites killing whites and they all SOLD OUT FOR REAL!!! None of them are based on true events but.......for some reason this one is only in a hand full of theaters throughout the entire country.
We do need movies of different narrative but it seems Nate Parker had a hard time getting support to fund this movie. I just wonder if those that are able to help fund will do so for different types of black history movies.
This was true tricknology you could tale they had to be VERY careful not to upset WHITE people too much I totally understand what he was talking about it was a great movie but very carefully done Black eyes are not equal to white eyes in Hollywood nothing against Nate Parker he had to get the movie done 5 stars from me if young or older people don't know your history I'm scared they will miss some of the messages just remember all your answers are internal
Thank you Professor Charles and Michael for critiquing this movie I have been following you for quite a while now and I love that you are a wealth of information about the cinema. Old movies, new movies, politics(or should I said tricknology) just continue to tell the truth Thank You for all that you do keeping it reelblack.
My observation on the film was passing on legacy, and tradition. Was a lot of subliminal messages in this movie. 1. It's great to have religion, but black people rely on it too much. It's makes us docile, and too accepting of cruel behavior towards us. 2. It shows us the strength of unity, and what type of stock we truly come from. We our a strong people with pride, intelligence, and resilience. 3. In the mist of working towards our goals, and executing our strategic plan to be treated as human beings, we need to be selective of our circle of people who know the plan. We always have to be vigilant of infiltrators that want to dismantle our progress either because they can't understand the vision, are weak, selfish, or crabs in the barrel. Some blacks don't want to get away from master cause he treat us good. 4. Lastly, that we have to be willing to put our lives on the line, and maybe even die for the things we believe in to create a better tomorrow for us and the generation to come. This was a call to action, the horn was blown to get organized and get ready for the revolution. Its time for truth to come out. Hopefully, this can a be a break through for a host of powerful, instrumental blacks throughout history. I would love to see so many hero's stories. Crispus Attucks, Mansa Musa, Benjamin Banneker, Ida B. Wells, the true story of the black Hebrew Israelites, the Haiti Revolution ( they won) etc
I just saw the film last week, Mike. Nat Turner and Sam Turner grew up together from start to finish. Obviously, their birthrights diverge. In hindsight, I can see how folks wanted to boycott its release during the last weeks of THIS presidential election cycle. It was a powerful depiction and tremendous acting from Nate Parker, though. Haunting imagery throughout.
For the record, I went to see the movie and I regret wasting my time doing so. The only bright side, I had a movie pass so there was no out of pocket expenses for me. The movie is seriously Anti-God and full of misinformation about Nat Turner! God is NOT the blame for slavery. Man is to blame. For the movie to infer that believing in God is the reason for our enslavement and oppression is beyond offensive, when our ancestors relied on God to get us where we are today. It is not GOD or our ancestors fault for us dropping the ball because we had assumed wrongly that the work to total freedom and independence were finished. They did their part. We didn't do ours. Furthermore, I am sick of Hollywood and sell out Toms, selling our birth rites to the oppressors, distorting our history for a few dollars and some cheap glory. Blacks who are Atheist or part of the Caucasian 'progressive' movement may find this movie appealing.
Enjoyed the film but i also agree with the Professors take. I felt more angered than inspired to action. We do need more films with solutions but showcase the ugly past as well. Thx for the conversation as always
Hello. Thank you for your time to view our commentary. I think Brother Nate deserves a lot of credit. He did a solid job. His talent and his black consciousness goals need to be nurtured and supported. I hope we earned your subscription and I am curious to hear what about the film, angered you. Each one, teach one. Peace and Blessings!
charles woods yes Sir i am a long time subscriber and enjoy every time i see you brothers post together. I agree the movie was beautifully shot and well written. My anger had nothing to do with the film but really the brutality of the period. Even though i have seen many slave films and know what to expect it still touched me on a certain level. Which i guess is the intention. Thanks for always taking the time to engage the comment section.
I could not for the life for me of why they kept breaking to the White Woman who taught him to only read certain parts of the Bible. I didn't see her significance at all.
I've communicated and debated with you on many different topics and subject matters. To seriously believe you didn't grasp the momentous points of interest. She purposely guided him to certain portions of the scriptures. Keeping us hypnotically mesmerized under a religious indoctrination. Behold the new enslaved slaves, for the next few millenniums. That was the subliminal message behind the multiple flashbacks. Peace, Queen.
I felt the same way. Why they try to make her so sympathetic? Like she wasn't a sleeve mistress. I totally agree with the professor on his take away. They could have gone more in depth on the 48hrs of the actual rebellion.
Crystal B. Maybe because when we were in slavery, many plantation owners would used partial parts in the Bible to control the slaves. Just food for thought.
My question pertain to the number of times in the movies that the camera kept zooming into the face of the white woman that allowed him to read. Are you implying that the director kept braking to her face because when we were in slavery, many plantation owners would use partial parts in the Bible to control the slaves as food for thought?. I don't think your theory applies, but I get it where you are coming from.
Crystal B. That's EXACTLY it!!! When they arrived here to conquer us (this was followed after they defeated our brothers and sisters in Portugal & Spain) - then Cristoforo 'dumbo' Colombo set sail to conquer us, the Hebrews of the America's. He knew were he was going (it wasn't a mistake) he selected, and hand picked an African Moor (the original "Spaniards"), Luis de Torres born as Yosef ben Levi Ha-Ivri, a Levi, the Hebrew interpreter to translate to the other Hebrew Tribes found here, in the America's! We were never brought here, from Africa! The big deception along with religion Jesus and God.
Another falsehood said here. Christ said "If your brother smite your cheek, offer him the left cheek." He didn't say to let the oppressor smite. This is turning out to be a disappointing video. I'll keep listening to see if it gets better.
Went to see Nat Turner last night and I too have mixed feelings about this film. I have always respected the perspective of Mr. Woods, and I agree with his concept of "circumscribed historicity". It is evident in this flick, to his point, this is indeed another "nostalgic" biopic set in slavery days, where Turner's radical response to his dehumanizing condition results in his death and the brutal killing of 100's of other blacks as a consequence of white retaliation. It is amazing how evident it is that too many people watch something on youtube and they obviously don't view the full segments and just "tune" in to what they want to hear. I did not once hear Mr. Woods say, no one should go see this film. I heard him, give much respect to Nat Parker's research and film making skill. He said it was worthy of Oscar consideration. He payed respect to Nate Parker for not using Styron's interpretation of Nat Turner. And, if I am not mistaken, Mr Woods said he looked forward to the day when there would be an effort by film makers of consciousness to depict stories of black heroes who demonstrate "solutions" to end the racist conditions people of color constantly face in this white supremacist society. In fact, I notice one viewer left a comment that he feels Mr woods is a "weak" man and "foolish". Then he leaves another comment in another post where he contradicts much of what he said in his first comment. In comment one, he complains about what Mr Woods had to say about the film's difficulty to be truly revolutionary... and then in his second comment, to the point Mr Woods was making, this same viewer states, "I knew and Predicted they were going to give us a watered down version, of this movie! This is why white people bought the Movie Rights: So that they could control the Narrative and the Content! To keep them from looking as Evil as they Really were and Are! Now I have to wonder, can you honestly say, that was not the point Mr Woods was making? And then one viewer left a comment that he sees Mr Woods as a "bitter" and "mean" old man. Wow, obviously, many of the viewers tune in for some of what's on this channel. If they watch all of what Mr. Woods has put on this channel---that is the last conclusion anyone can rationally make about this gentleman. He refuses to condemn all whites and he is branded some sort of a sell out. He points out how cinema is inherently anti-black and he is branded a racist. The one thing I have learned about this man, is his dogged attempt to get people to see things objectively and historically. The one thing he also demands, is that we all be respectful of everyone's right to an opinion and perspective. I think he also asking that both be WELL INFORMED!
THANKS MUCH FOR THE RESPECT AND THE DEFENSE. Hey, people are entitled to their opinions. My only request is that we respectfully disagree with one another. No need for any ad hominem attacks. I learned a long time ago: arguments sharpen tongues and debates sharpen minds. As Charles Barkley says: There are no experts. Only God is an expert. So once again, thank you for the support. Peace and Blessings!
To me, there is no solution in a white supremacist society for black people. A new way in a new world has to be created. This disease of white supremacy has messed up the entire world.
Another slave movie...! What is the true history of Nat Turner? The movie will still be a Hollywood version, no matter who wrote, directed and produced it.
My question is why another slave movie? Is that all our history is about that we were nothing but slaves? What about movies of blacks who were inventors, discoverers and artists; we not only built this country with our hands but also with our brains.
Darkwheel No I totally get what you are saying ! What I am trying to say is that this is not just a slave movie where a man gets beat up countless of time and a white man saves the day. This brings awareness of the revolutions that took place during that time that most people don't know of. I hear some people saying ( why didn't they ever fight back?) . They did but most wouldn't know about it until now. It starts a conversation But yeah I really want to see movies on topics you speak of. I'm about to go watch Hidden Figure and I'm so excited for it.
Darkwheel Off course but not everyone likes to read or knows what to read. Some people need awareness first before they take an interest into any subject . So someone can watch this movie and go google slave rebellion and that would be a way to start being more knowledgeable about that particular topic.
Fine Review and discussion of "Birth Of A Nation." You guys may want to reexamine the actual plot of "Sankofa," and where it takes place. Good Stuff. Raymond Forchion
Thanks also for your call to not Bootleg the film. Actors, Writers, Producers and Directors like myself, make our livings from the legitimate sales of these films.
RAY FORCHION Thank you for your support and kind critique. Also, thank you for your respectful correction. Good luck with your endeavors. Peace and Blessings!
I'm confused. What does Django have to do with the discussion of this film about Nat Turner, a real person? The older man is supposed to be a historian?
In my opinion, the build-up to the story line was entirely too long. It appeared Nat Turner needed countless amounts of examples of white dominance, torture, rape and tragic Black death. In my opinion, the narrative should have been focused more on the rebellion. Planning, Strategizing, and his recruitment of other slaves.
I saw this movie the first time at a friend's house and I couldn't wait for it to come to DVD. I had to have it. I know the history of Nat Turner so in spite of Hollywood this was great. No it is not the whole story but based on certain accounts.
I somewhat agree with Charles Woods (light skinned dude for those who are not familiar with this channel) I went to see this movie, it has amazing cinematography, excellent cast, and great writing. But there was something missing for me... The film should have been longer and depicted more of the rebellion. In a way I think we got short changed on that part. Overall though, I'm glad I went to go see it, but it should have been more....
IDK what Charles is on but this movie was awsome I was pissed at first but then happy at the end especially when the one slave from that really bad house chopped off his masters head. Of course he died at the end but we got Django then this so I was completly geeked and happy and would love to see more
It's ironic (and enraging) that William Styron portrayed Nat Turner as a crazed fanatic. Styron was actually "crazy" himself and was clearly projecting onto Nat Turner: Styron battled severe mental illness and wrote about it in his own personal confessional, "Darkness Visible."
Appreciate this review and I loved the film. I thought that maybe Nate Parker did not want to show the murdering of white women and children because it would take away from the focus of Nat as a heroic figure. That was the focus of "white" produced and written materials in the past. The film focused on the uprising of the black people and an event that is respected as one of the initial events that led to slavery abolishment and the Civil Rights movement. I am so disappointed as an American that more people did not see this movie. What a great accomplishment of Nate Parker, and I do think he will get the respect that he deserves in regards to awards. I really enjoy your channel. God Bless xx
I kinda see what the light skinned dude was talking about, but I didn't want to see it because it would make me lame in addition to him! I WILL SAY IT AGAIN, THIS MOVIE IS NOT DIRECTLY FOR ADULTS. NATE P., stated its for generations to come and for schools to view it for all ethnicities. YOU CANNOT GO (slang) AND SCARE OFF THE OTHER KIDS IN THE CLASSROOM. The light guy got it kinda confused!
this movie was very good please research the character jasper and do an update on this movie please. They made it seem like he was going to be the next generation to lead the civil war please look into it.
And yes indeed in his own opinion, opinion "JUST LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD THE TRUTH" in his own point of view in what he see in the film to me his thought is "FOOD FOR THOUGHT" in my opinion "BLACK FIRST"
I did not want to go see this film at first, because what I thought about was definitely another slave movie. I was tired of seeing this. I really do not remember why I wanted to see this. No, I did not want to see another Lupita scene. The imagery was great. I agree with you that you do see in the movie, that you can try to come against white people or rise up against the system that is wrong, but you will pay. Look at all the things that they did to this man, even after his death-turned him into wax, flayed him, and dismembered him. I even heard back then, they pickled Black men's private parts. I was glad to see someone stand up, like Nat Turner, but he will not be seen as a hero, because he is going against the system. It sure sheds light on people who do not know the atrocities of slavery, I learned my African American History in college from a great professor. This movie, I feel may have confirmed many white men's worst fears, which is that if you allow them to have power they will kill us. The thing I do not see very many people mentioning is that there is scripture First Samuel 15:2-3, God tells them to not spare anyone-kill the women, men, and children, so as slavery was made acceptable by using the Bible, Nate found a scripture to support his actions to kill all of them. To me, in this movie, you did not see Nat Turner react until it was personal, until the woman, he loved, honored, respected, and tried to protect got hurt and raped that he rebelled. He showed respect for his mother, his Grandmother, and his wife-and children. I feel that the oirginal Birth of Nation showed the fear that white had of Blacks getting their freedom. But the modern day slavery showed the worst fear, that they will rebel and kill us if they get the upper hand. Yes, it did show if we fight back we will pay. I like your review.
@Charles Woods What I was hoping to hear was your analogy of this film (Birth of a Nation), as for instance, Nate Parker vs a non-black person producing the film. Not interested in conspiracy theories, but instead your straight on approach analyzing these film and whether it has, in your opinion, something that sets it apart being produced by a young black independent producer as opposed to a major Hollywood studio. Also, the fact that it has been totally ignored by the Golden Globes and the Academy.
Brothers, let not forget about the great movie starring Heavyweight Boxing Champion Ken Norton and the movie "Mandingo" that showed the true life of how we were treated as slaves. We must acknowledge how some of these various slave movies tell the truth regardless of how they hurt our feelings. They should be viewed as a reminder of where we have been and also what we may face again if we don't wake up to the reality of White Supremacy and Racism and what it is capable of.
+he_of_no_tribe Luke Cage is actually following in its original storyline - what do mean by: "blaxploitation"? That was way back then. When our grandparents didn't know any better.
this review would have been so much better without charles he just reminds me of an old bitter mean stubborn man i bet his family would say he is a mean person i just don't like anything about this man the way he talks down to you instead of an equal i mean just had to give it a thumbs down just because of him
never thought our own wouldn't support this film tho...a film that was damn there a full black production..that's why black owned business don't prosper because we don't support our own and nitpick each other 2 much...
Saw the movie and realistically you cannot possibly cover every single detail and historical fact in90 minutes .Secondly , the movie is not a documentary , but a dramatic account of this great icon and revolutionary . The acting was excellent and the fact the so much focus was on Nat Turner flipping white supremacy religious indoctrination and using it the scripture to empower the oppressed to be revolutionary was inspiring .Charles is trying to get too dam deep and not conceding the fact that it will take time to get to where he thinks these films need to go .
They put stuff in the Nat tuner film that wasn't really factual but I guess they did that to add have more backstory for cinematic purposes. Anytime I see based on a true story they usual add stuff to it. From what I read he was never married and he didn't have any kids.
I wish they would of took their time with the rebellion, I feel it was rushed but I thought movie was alright . My favorite scene is when nat and the reverend battle it out with bible verses.
Why doesn't Mr. Woods make this perfect film depiction he always pines for, instead of pontificating on how other films fall short. Do it, instead of talk it.
Hello. Thank you so much for your time to watch our review. I know some viewers have issues with my commentary on Mr. Parker's film. If you watched the full discussion, I give this production high praise as a work of art. If you see any of the "mini-lessons" I have presented on this channel, it is very clear that I judge black images from a historical perspective. I am comparing contemporary black depictions with those of the past. My analysis is probing to determine if today's cinematic portraiture of African Americans is realistic, positive, dimensional, and balanced. There is no "perfect" film. That is why I often use the term, "dichotomy." You and I can't experience art with the same response. You bring your "schema," and I carry mine. That is the nature and dynamic of "spectatorship." Did you see the movie? If yes, then tell me: Does this film contain elements of "conventional" and "circumscribed" tropes which support the dominant culture? I think, yes! And that is my opinion. And honestly, I may be wrong. We must endeavor to learn from each other. You have every right to disagree with me. I am very interested in how this film impressed you. All the best. Peace and Blessings!
I feel that he is a hero, even with costing other Black people's to die, because he tried to free himself. In Kansas, which is very close to the state I live in, a police was shot and killed. This occurred after three shootings of Black men unarmed, and two murders of police in other states where protest was occurring. The young men that did this were Black. They were given a capital murder charge. The thing is that I feel that they should have been punished, but those same police can kill us, and even with video, they are still not wrong. So, some say we should rebel against the establishment, because it is not going to change, but all that is going to happen is us getting wiped out. Like Nat Turner, we will be made as example to others of what not to do or this is what will happen. I read that they system was not made for us, so the punishment will not be the same. Very interesting......Hmmm!
Nate Parker and I are from Norfolk Va home of the largest navel base and the projects he grew up in is torn down and will be replaced with mix income housing
I saw the movie. Um I thought it was more violent than 12. I thought Nate was great. Look when they had the chance to kill the slave masters there were cheers! I call this film beautiful and horrible at the same town. It gives you a since of pride that someone stood up
As a person who has gained knowledge of who my ancestors are, I loved this movie. I feel like Nate Parker is trying to wake our people up to the real true history as being Yahs chosen people. Only those who have done the research will see all of the symbolism. Plz read Deuteronomy 28 and ask yourself what race/ nation of people do these curses fit...Plz do your research on your history black people...The Bible is our history...Shalom!
ancient history no?.. where's the film makers who possess the fortitude to tell the true story of the atrocities of Katrina?a story of the victims and heroes of our time.
the movie is all abouth the black sprits. and if you dont feel it than it is a promble.once you feel the sprits understanding comes about.black people will never agree about any thing that why we are in the shape we are in today.there was a time when our people was one people. at lease we are still one people and if it was not from the slave we would not know about our sprits.
This is why I want to see John Horse,, he was never assassinated. I also would love to see The Moors
The Sounds True! He was a rebel & for good reason!!
It was a really Great Movie! However I knew and Predicted they were going to give us a watered down version, of this movie! This is why white people bought the Movie Rights: So that they could control the Narrative and the Content! To keep them from looking as Evil as the Really were and Are! Hopefully when it comes out on Blu-ray that there are uncut scenes that may not have been in the theatrical release.
Melvin Keelen I knew they were going too water this movie down! However it still survived their cutting out of the most brutal scenes! Not that I like too see violence in movies! Prophetic Ministry Your welcome brother.
Prophetic Ministry HalleluYAH! Praise Yahuah and Yahusha will be back to get the chosen!
I wonder how the director's cut would be. I Heard they cut a lot of scenes once the studio got a hold of the film.
Charles Woods keep educating people, everything you are saying is the truth. Really great.
You are welcome sir.
charles woods I love everything you have to say and you are right on target. Keep doing what your doing and continue to wake up the people.
Please come to Minnesota Charles I would buy a ticket to see one of your amazing talks about black Cinema and beyond.👈🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Peace.✌🏾
He gave Black folk something beautiful.
please do a review on the Netflix show *Luke Cage* ...good analysis as always! one love.
I enjoy listening to the both of you guys....
19:53 so right. I remember seeing Black Hawk Down. Just like the professor said, it was set in East Africa.
I love these guys demeanor!! subbed
Thank you. ;-)
I appreciate that you consider the film from both a political and a technical point of view. Illuminating.
However, they were forced to learn the Bible as a means to justify their enslavement. the Bible is the tool of the serpent.
cabalofdemons he's reviewed so many films that he's not easily excited.
cabalofdemons That's because the movie was 80% wrong. If you know the real the story of Nat Turner, you will be disappointed like I was.
cubedmack That's what I read. I'm not watching this film. Hopefully we can get a faithful adaptation of the Nat Turner story. I'll save my money for the Thurgood Marshall biopic.
Thurgood Marshall? We'll definitely see good white people in that one.
jesushateswood OK, nothing surprising about that.
So go
see Madea, you know the movie where a black man dresses up like a woman and acts like one too.......but first peek into the SOLD OUT "Birth of a nation"
theater and you will see 100+ empty seats......THIS IS SO SAD.....I
counted 46 white movies this year that had whites killing whites and
they all SOLD OUT FOR REAL!!! None of them are based on true events
but.......for some reason this one is only in a hand full of theaters
throughout the entire country.
Good review! Subscribing. You guys give a fresh take not often see on the web. Keep it up!
+Andrew Wallock thank u.
Yeh, I thought the same. Very mature and even.
We do need movies of different narrative but it seems Nate Parker had a hard time getting support to fund this movie. I just wonder if those that are able to help fund will do so for different types of black history movies.
Cahluvca NATE PARKER SOLD THE RIGHTS OF THE MOVIE TO RUPERT MURDOCH.
*****
Who was this mythical "black" person that offered him more money, are there any links - from a credible source only?
This was true tricknology you could tale they had to be VERY careful not to upset WHITE people too much I totally understand what he was talking about it was a great movie but very carefully done Black eyes are not equal to white eyes in Hollywood nothing against Nate Parker he had to get the movie done 5 stars from me if young or older people don't know your history I'm scared they will miss some of the messages just remember all your answers are internal
I’d like to hear your opinion on The Watchmen TV series
Thanks Brothers for you Review and for keeping it Black:-)
Can't see this movie on cable
Thank you Professor Charles and Michael for critiquing this movie I have been following you for quite a while now and I love that you are a wealth of information about the cinema. Old movies, new movies, politics(or should I said tricknology) just continue to tell the truth Thank You for all that you do keeping it reelblack.

My
observation on the film was passing on legacy, and tradition. Was a lot
of subliminal messages in this movie. 1. It's great to have religion,
but black people rely on it too much. It's makes us docile, and too
accepting of cruel behavior towards us. 2. It shows us the strength of
unity, and what type of stock we truly come from. We our a strong
people with pride, intelligence, and resilience. 3. In the mist of
working towards our goals, and executing our strategic plan to be treated
as human beings, we need to be selective of our circle of people who know the
plan. We always have to be vigilant of infiltrators that want
to dismantle our progress either because they can't understand the vision, are
weak, selfish, or crabs in the barrel. Some blacks don't
want to get away from master cause he treat us good. 4. Lastly, that we
have to be willing to put our lives on the line, and maybe even die
for the things we believe in to create a better tomorrow for us and the
generation to come. This was a call to action, the horn was blown to
get organized and get ready for the revolution.
Its time for truth to come out. Hopefully, this can a be a break
through for a host of powerful, instrumental blacks throughout history. I
would love to see so many hero's stories. Crispus Attucks, Mansa
Musa, Benjamin Banneker, Ida B. Wells, the true story of the black Hebrew
Israelites, the Haiti Revolution ( they won) etc
I just saw the film last week, Mike. Nat Turner and Sam Turner grew up together from start to finish. Obviously, their birthrights diverge. In hindsight, I can see how folks wanted to boycott its release during the last weeks of THIS presidential election cycle. It was a powerful depiction and tremendous acting from Nate Parker, though. Haunting imagery throughout.
I going to watch this today. Thank you for the review.
Great movie ''a must see''
Birth of a nation deserves 50 Oscar's 🌯
Nate Parker did a good job. I would have liked more victories for brothers in the film
The big deception along with religion Jesus and God.
the scene where they show Cherrys beaten face in the movie does remind me of Emmett Tills mutilated face
Peace and Blessings!
the boxer man jwtb 3
To me, there is no solution in a white supremacist society for black people. A new way in a new world has to be created. This disease of white supremacy has messed up the entire world.
Another slave movie...! What is the true history of Nat Turner? The movie will still be a Hollywood version, no matter who wrote, directed and produced it.
The only slave movie I've seen where a white guy is not our saviour. It's a different perspective and you should go see it :)
Vlogs, the more we study our past the more we discover our ignorance.
+Ray Forchion yes it was filmed in VA but takes place in the West Indies. Going off the top of the dome. Thanks for watching. Glad u enjoyed.
RAY FORCHION Thank you for your support and kind critique. Also, thank you for your respectful correction. Good luck with your endeavors. Peace and Blessings!
THANKS FOR THE KNOWLEDGE GUYS , I ENJOYED LISTENING.
what documentary was he talking about thats on Amazon prime?
+Micah The Comedian Nat Turner A troublesome property
Note the slip.. Mike said "The Birth Of A Nation" which is actually quite a different film. Wonder if they will do a review of that movie?
I'm confused. What does Django have to do with the discussion of this film about Nat Turner, a real person? The older man is supposed to be a historian?
he was not a paid preacher. His master got paid 2 allow him 2 preach. that light skin guy is right about how the bible was used & still used.
I know it’s a mouthful to say, however we should use the word “ 33:29 “enslaved” as opposed to the word “slave.”
I saw this movie the first time at a friend's house and I couldn't wait for it to come to DVD. I had to have it. I know the history of Nat Turner so in spite of Hollywood this was great. No it is not the whole story but based on certain accounts.
I love these reviews.
Of course he died at the end but we got Django then this so I was completly geeked and happy and would love to see more
Thanks Charles. Thanks Mike. Amen
It's ironic (and enraging) that William Styron portrayed Nat Turner as a crazed fanatic. Styron was actually "crazy" himself and was clearly projecting onto Nat Turner: Styron battled severe mental illness and wrote about it in his own personal confessional, "Darkness Visible."
charles the mau mau was not south africa ..the "Mau-Mau" against British rule in East Africa specifically kenya
Great commentary, thanks for sharing!
And yes indeed in his own opinion, opinion "JUST LET THE TRUTH BE TOLD THE TRUTH" in his own point of view in what he see in the film to me his thought is "FOOD FOR THOUGHT" in my opinion "BLACK FIRST"
Mr Wood you are on point tricknology case closed. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I saw this movie but had heard about the original version. This movie should have been called NAT TURNER.
Thank you. Was looking forward to your response. Very enlightening.
+John Bullock good points. have you watched our clip "slave rebellion in the movies" ? We discuss Drum.
Please review Luke Cage. Modern day blaxploitation in my opinion.
he_of_no_tribe I loved Luke Cage a strong black male character and wasn't really stereotypical
+he_of_no_tribe
Luke Cage is actually following in its original storyline - what do mean by: "blaxploitation"? That was way back then. When our grandparents didn't know any better.
I saw that movie. You could tell that Nate Parker studied. It was brutal to watch.
you said something about a clip?
The 2016 version of BIRTH OF A NATION, not the uninspiringly degrading 1915 version!! Yes!!!
this review would have been so much better without charles he just reminds me of an old bitter mean stubborn man i bet his family would say he is a mean person i just don't like anything about this man the way he talks down to you instead of an equal i mean just had to give it a thumbs down just because of him
never thought our own wouldn't support this film tho...a film that was damn there a full black production..that's why black owned business don't prosper because we don't support our own and nitpick each other 2 much...
I think the movie portrayed Nat Turner as a religious radical that took the Bible in a literal term which was interesting
Saw the movie and realistically you cannot possibly cover every single detail and historical fact in90 minutes .Secondly , the movie is not a documentary , but a dramatic account of this great icon and revolutionary . The acting was excellent and the fact the so much focus was on Nat Turner flipping white supremacy religious indoctrination and using it the scripture to empower the oppressed to be revolutionary was inspiring .Charles is trying to get too dam deep and not conceding the fact that it will take time to get to where he thinks these films need to go .
the other people paid 4 his actions because they didn't fight.
Sounds like the brothers wants Birth of a nation to be more like Django unchained
BLACK HATE CAN'T MAKE IT OUT THE GATE. HATE IS CONSUMING YOU, MAY YOU FINALLY REST IN PEACE.
positive video brotha.
Charles Woods holds no punches .
The ending was totally wrong! Nat Turner did not turn himself in, he was caught.
The Mau Mau is Kenya! I'm trying to watch this, but I wish you would go on and talk. Say what's on your mind.
I agree with the man with the fishing hat on!
the movie sucked!
Oscar winning film Supprot i unite. the best film of the year/decade.
Why is it when people talk about movies about slavery no ever mentions Mandingo to me that's the most disturbing film about slavery I've ever seen
Yes!
Sadly compromises were made but still a great film. White film industry downplayed it in the U S... European always appreciates our truth more.
Nate Parker and I are from Norfolk Va home of the largest navel base and the projects he grew up in is torn down and will be replaced with mix income housing
people have already turned their back on him because of accusations.
Mike Tyson is back unfortunately he is stuck in TROY 1200 B.C Tyson does not recall slavery, or segregation.
I saw the movie. Um I thought it was more violent than 12. I thought Nate was great. Look when they had the chance to kill the slave masters there were cheers! I call this film beautiful and horrible at the same town. It gives you a since of pride that someone stood up
Why not show a movie about black people pitching a movie and struggling to get an Oscar.
That'd be something.
That 1967 book was written by James Baldwin's lover....
Dude, get to the point.
right! i mean damn dude you can use 5 letter words this not scrabble G.
As a person who has gained knowledge of who my ancestors are, I loved this movie. I feel like Nate Parker is trying to wake our people up to the real true history as being Yahs chosen people. Only those who have done the research will see all of the symbolism. Plz read Deuteronomy 28 and ask yourself what race/ nation of people do these curses fit...Plz do your research on your history black people...The Bible is our history...Shalom!
the first birth of the nation revived the I'll maybe this one will revive the next Martin Luther king or greater
ancient history no?.. where's the film makers who possess the fortitude to tell the true story of the atrocities of Katrina?a story of the victims and heroes of our time.
Thx family
My good friend was in this and I was able to review it as well. Check it out!
I wouldn't wipe my cat's ass with this film! It's BLACK RACIST SHIT!
When I saw the title of the movie I thought it was a retelling of that KKK movie.
The professor sounds a little scared. I totally disagree with his review of the movie.
its hard to show something on film that doesn't exist, get my drift
the movie is all abouth the black sprits. and if you dont feel it than it is a promble.once you feel the sprits understanding comes about.black people will never agree about any thing that why we are in the shape we are in today.there was a time when our people was one people. at lease we are still one people and if it was not from the slave we would not know about our sprits.
