Great video. @johnwoolf66 this was our family car. My dad was the first owner, my sister the second and I was the third. It was the first car I drove and I passed my driving test in it! Great to see it in such great condition. Would be great to see it again one day!
@@regdhanjal4897 wow that's fantastic! I bought the car in 2010 and it came with lots of paperwork, including the original receipt. He was a doctor if I recall correctly?
Interesting that John mentioned the h/brake issue. That had crossed my mind as well. Some sort of transmission lock could be made using the redundant 1st/2nd rail of the gearbox. You only need 3rd, 4th and reverse for driving so, if the 1st/2nd rail could be engaged at the same time as one of the other gears, it would lock the gearbox. Obviously with a switch to prevent power being applied with trans locked.
@@chargeheadsuk the only thing is when you lock those two gears I place if anything happens as in the car being bumped buy another car that will lock it pretty quickly to where you need to take it apart to unlock it. I wouldn’t do that.
For the handbrake issue some way to short out the three phases with the car in top gear would work too. It may not stop it rolling but would slow it down big time. 😁
@@chargeheadsuk Around 15 years ago I built a wind turbine using the Hugh Piggot axial flux design. It furled out of the wind to avoid over speed but sometimes I wanted to stop it spinning if a storm was coming so fitted a switch to short out the coils. When the switch shorted the coils it could only turn very slowly even in the strongest winds.
@@chargeheadsuk It was a 10 foot diameter turbine, (each blade was 5 ft) and on a windy day gave around 1.2kW at 24V. I never worked out the total kWh per day Unfortunately we didn't have that many good days so after my batteries died I sold it on.
Had he set the power curve to where it didn’t slam on really quickly. You read about the hyper 9 being able to destroy a bug transmission. I’m wanting to put one in my Jetta MK3 or go crazy with a Tesla motor. But the hyper 9 is near my HP and torque so I think I would be safe. What batteries did he use. Very great video.
Nice build and amazing daily car, I’d defo keep the gear box and clutch if i build on to keep rpm’s done and better kwm after all the new porsche ev has a 2speed motorbox thingy 👍 im looking forward to the first 400mph road car with 8speed box 😂
Yes its a good point. All depens what you're after. As my TVR will be a comuter 😉 auto is essential for the daily drive. Then weekend its all about peak POWER!!!
Pleasant chat. Thanks for the ride, fellas.
👍
Fantastic and interesting video Tim - think you're developing a certain style - and it's working well.
Great conversion John - Beetles are so loved!
Love bug even 👍
Thanks Shaun 🙂

My sister is the doctor. It has travelled all over the UK - literally from Lands End to John o’ Groats!

Sounds like a possible solution 🤔

Thanks Sham.
Thank you for enlightening me on conversion of VW beetle to EV.Can you convert me.

Thanks I'll suggest this to John 👍

@@alibro7512 that sounds great, how did it perform power wise?

6 x tesla modules, not sure what power
Yep good point, I've mapped a slow throttle curve to make it smooth and easy to drive.
@@johnwoolf66 thanks, with there software, is it pretty easy?
@@chargeheadsuk thanks.
@@mikejf4377 yep, the software is excellent.
Summer update, I'm currently using around 170Wh per mile, that's nearly 6 miles per kWh 😮
Tesla batteries love being warm!

how fast is the car?? does it pick up nice and quick like a tesla?
Its 120bhp in a beetle that had about 50bhp with a bucket full of torque. Its not Tesla quick however she goes really well 👍
How did you source the motor im currently trying to do a performance build with a warp 11 motor and I'm not having luck getting the motor
Where are you based?

Someone is putting a large tesla drive unit in one😈. Not sure if it will be road legal though.
