I was born in 1993, so these three seasons were the ones that defined my whole childhood. Everything about this era puts a smile on my face: the Dino’s, the songs, Bob Singletons music, the wonderful kid characters etc. it’s what I think of whenever Barney is mentioned even though it seems Mattel nowadays are trying to phase this era out.
I was born in 1989 i to watch the 1stc3 seasons to i stopped watching it when I reached elementary school cause I took a interest in anime thought my elementary school day's to middle school day's to high school day's how about you
Season 1 is probably my personal favorite "comfort" season. It's nice, small, consistent, touching, and probably the earliest Barney material I remember alongside seasons 4-6, which I grew up with more. You're definitely right about season 2 being visually "darker"... it really shows, because no matter how much I love Barney, some of the endings from that season when he goes back to doll form really creeped me out, not only because several of them were in the classroom with the lights turned off, but they also (for some reason) decided to zoom in on his face. I mean, it was OK when they did this for endings which took place outside or indoor areas where the lights were on, but this made endings like "Grown Ups for a Day", "Having Tens of Fun", "The Dentist Makes Me Smile" and especially "May I Help You" all the more intimidating. That having been said, the season 2 costumes for Baby Bop and BJ are my favorite! (I remember a Netflix user saying that the slightly altered BJ/Baby Bop costumes in "Imagination Island" made them look like anime characters LOL) Season 3 I currently don't have much to say about (I'll probably add something here if I think of anything LOL), but I also really like :) It's funny because as I mentioned, I primarily grew up with seasons 4-6, with only a little bit of season 1 (specifically the Barney Favorites Vol. 1 album). I just enjoy the Lyons era a little more, because I started watching them when I was a bit older, and they're just more endearing (in my opinion). But I also really enjoy the Lyrick era, especially the "Great Adventure" movie, the two season 4 episodes I watched on VHS growing up ("Oh Brother, She's My Sister" and "Good Clean Fun"), and the 1999 Christmas special :)
The home videos released after season 3 were sort of used as test beds for the next generation of cast members, and had a mix of old and new characters, one example being Fun and Games had Min, Jason, Kristen(who would go on to be a regular starting in season 4) and Jesse(who only appeared once in the franchise, in this video).
This was in my recommendations and I had to watch it. Born in 1995, I grew up in the Bob West era of Barney and like you my sisters and I, being triplets and were fans to the point of having Barney AND Baby Bop at our second birthday party in 1997, had tapes of the show’s earlier seasons that I had to look up the credits tonight and had tears of nostalgia sting my eyes. I’ll be twenty seven in November and although I’ve since outgrown the purple dinosaur, the nostalgic fire for him has never died in my heart.
I felt like i was close to Barney, especially with Bob West as the voice. Bob brought a lot to Barney's voice that i couldn't see the show without him. although I’ve since outgrown the purple dinosaur, it still brings me back to my childhood days, singing along to him, or Lucy or Tina or Kathy or Amy or Min or Michael or Tosha (at least from the BATBYG or B&F days).
I remember how much the parents of the time were complaining about how hyper active Barney was in season 2. Right on this video helped me remember who I originally was thanks.
One of the cool things about this show was the language learning that you mention. I was watching one day and Min sings "Maligayang Bati," the Tagalog version of "Happy Birthday to You" and i said "wait a minute, i didn't know that Min was Flippina?" I even told my teacher that too. And on the same episode Tina sang Happy birthday in Spanish too! I also saw where Luci sings the first verse of I Love You in Spanish and then sings it in English along with Barney, that was so cool. i remember telling my teacher, "Did you hear Lucy sing "I Love You" in Spanish on Barney, i didn't know she was Latina!"
40:30 you know, I comparing the earlier seasons with season 10-11 and in some episodes Baby Bop and BJ act like they don’t even like each other sometimes. It’s probably because they wanted to experiment with sibling rivalry but all did was make me long for the time they didn’t constantly argue when they were on screen together.
I saw that some in 4-6 too, actually. Not as often but there were a couple I can think of off the top of my head that were devoted to them settling an argument.
Thank you for this video. I grew up with this Barney era and your channel had helped me reconnect with Barney and what he meant ❤ to us all. Thank you 😊
I hope you could focus on the second generation (The Scooter era, Seasons 4-6) next along with the third generation (The HIT/Park Era, Season 7-9) and the fourth generation (The Riff Era/Cancellation, Season 10-14) following soon after. Also, Leah Gloria (Who plays Luci) was actually 13 when the production of the first season started by October 1991, but turned 14 when Everyone is Special was filmed by Late March/Early April 1992 just before she stopped being a regular cast.
Barney and friends season 1 is the one I grew up watching while it was on aired on the pbs channel back then along with this other educational programs. For me it make an impact in my life in a positive way. It was kind of sad knowing that a lot of grownups dislike this character who was made for kids only. Still I didn’t care when my siblings make fun of me but at the end they understood that it was part of my childhood, that it make me happy which they end up respecting my taste. Going through my teens and as an adult make me being a compassionate, loving, and a caring person. And for my parents they saw the impact on me because I was a good girl who never got in trouble. So it was a relief from my parents POV. Whenever I see Barney it brings me special memories rather than being ashamed or being embarrassed.
the milk song might be a way to get funding from the USDA for promoting milk each season seems to grow a lot very organically. Using the same few suits, and going to so many off-screen events probably accumulate much hands on experience. Especially by Season 3. I admire Barney for being actually quite brave and bold in displaying such sweetness and unconditional love so broadly. This retrospective is lovely. My 1992-born little cousin was a huge Barney fan growing up, and I really miss something about this era.
I’m pretty sure Joe Scruggs’ appearance on the show was a marketing tactic, cuz Lyrick studios did release a Joe Scruggs home video later on. And in the promos they used “from the makers of Barney” at the beginning
considering Season 2 was ‘93 and Lyrick wouldn’t take over for another few years I don’t think the Home Video was related bc Lyons didn’t have the rights to his stuff lol But yes, Joe was on bc he was a well-known childrens performer, at least to the adults

I myself am autistic to Rachel i myself loved watching barney all the time as a kid until I reached elementary 1st grade that's when i outgrow it and i took a interest in anime how about were you and your sister are you fans of anime
I gotta say 1-3 holds a special place in my heart. I didn’t really catch most of 4-6, because I guess as a child I lost interest in Barney and I gravitated more towards Blue’s Clues and I was getting older. But 1-3, ESPECIALLY Season 3, always give me the strongest sense of comfort and nostalgia. Also one thing I think is worth mentioning is how the show handled Jason, they didn’t shine a spotlight on that he looks different. The kids all treated Jason as if nothing was wrong with him at all. And that is hallmark of what makes B&F so special. Acceptance.
“why don’t you run, I see you don’t have any gun” 😂 you reaction was priceless lol but yeah that song was in the camping episode of the backyard gang when singing around the campfire. But yes, the first three seasons shaped my childhood. ❤️
I used to love Barney and Friends as a child even though it was mainly a pre-school show but I loved a lot of shows for the pre-school age group back then.
What amazed me as a kid was that these kids had talents that i thought they didn't do, but in reality, they did (Leah Gloria really could play the guitar, Becky Swonke did a backflip in "The Backyard Show", etc) Brian Epps who played Michael could play the guitar too, but we never saw him do it on the show, Pia Hamilton played a gurro in "Hola Mexico!" and is a good dancer on Broadway too. I can't remember anyone else who played an instrument or danced on the show and in real life. Leah could play piano too in real life. Becky also swam too in real life. Every child in the franchise can sing and dance as a matter of course.
I was born in 93, watched this show in my early childhood, I remember having some of the Barney & Backyard Gang vhs tape, I was probably seen or eight when I stopped watching the show, I remember in the early 2000’s both the costume actor who played Barney and Bob West the voice actor left the show, that was when the show jumped the gun for me and I stopped watching it, I also remember seeing the Barney movie lol

Hedge On Stage, That Was An Amazing Video About The History Of Barney And Friends Throughout The Seasons. !I Absolutely Like It! It Was Always Awesome To See Tina, Lucy, Kathy, Tosha, Min, Julie, Michael, Shawn, Derek, David, Jason, Carlos, And Kenneth. Especially Barney The Purple Dinosaur, Baby Bop, And Bj. Now, Going Back To Season 2 Of The Franchise, There Were 2 Kids Who Warmed My Heart The Most... And Those Kids Are Julie And Jason. And Here Is The Reason Why: Julie Is Definitely By Far The Sweetest And Happiest Kid Ever, And She Was Always Smiling. !She Is Also Extremely Charming! I Liked Her Personality A Whole Lot, And The Way That She Acted In Most Of The Episodes... Jason On The Other Side Is Incredible, Thoughtful, And Creative. Honestly I was born in the 1990s basically the last of the millennials because I had a mixture of Barney VHS and episodes which was Barney and Friends Along with Barney and the backyard gang. Honestly It changed my life and turn me into a better person next to Sesame Street and Mister Rogers but Barney had a better influence on me as Sesame Street and Mr Rogers came later.
Bob deserved a Daytime Emmy award for the 2nd Season as did Joyner..maybe they could have shared it...after all that is one of the things Barney was known for.😊
I’m interested in knowing what your top ten episodes of this generation would be. Here’s mine: 10. Four Seasons Day 9. Camera Safari 8. On The Move 7. Happy Birthday Barney 6. Picture This 5. Stop, Look and Be Safe A Very Special Delivery 3. Everyone Is Special 2. Going Places 1. A Welcome Home

My favorite episode is sing and dance with Barney I grew up watching various episodes with the season 1 cast and various episodes with the season 4 cast simultaneously and seeing them all interact with one another was the most beautiful thing ever at the time
Sharing is caring is the one that got me into trouble 😂😂. I interpreted that lesson to mean people Share with me, not the other way around. My older sibs shut that down asap 😂😂 they still clown on over that
It would interesting to see your thoughts on the 1997-2000 era when the time comes. I liked season 4 and parts of season 5, but season 6 was when things began to run out of steam. I really liked that generation of cast, especially Kristen, Robert, Jeff and Kim.
How would you rank the versions of I Love You from the television show? This is my ranking 1. Season 1 2. Season 2 (slow) 3. Season 3 (slow) 4. Season 3 (alternative faster version) 5. Season 4-6 6. Season 2 (alternative faster version) 7. Season 7- until shows cancellation Would love to hear your input 🙂🙂🙂🙂
I stopped liking Barney at 5 in 1995. For whatever reason kids thought I liked it and would beat me up and bully me up until 5th grade. Im saying this because I am shocked anyone would make a documentary or video essay about the pre school show on youtube.
I myself stopped watching barney at 5 to cause the reasons was i was starting grade school and i took a interest anime shows like sailor moon DragonBall z tenchi monster rancher butt the most popular anime shows i liked most was pokemon and digimon
@HedgeOnStage yeah I used to watch it until I was turning 6 cause I took a interest in anime my dad was telling about how the show was for younger audiences and my dad new I was getting older that's why stop watching it
It's so strange that I was born '94, but I still didn't like BJ just because I thought he was a new character that didn't need to be added! I really wonder how I could think that, as he was already in the show when I was born! (Probably VHS tapes :P)
Pretty good on the early years of the barneyandfriends TV series from season 1 to season 3 if I might going to give a ranking on these Seasons then it will be something like this. 3: Season 1 2: Season 2 1: Season 3 The Lyons group era of the show is pretty unique and pretty interesting with special guest appearances, different School settings, and even different cast of the show and I cannot forget about Barney's different looks throughout I also like the home videos of that particular season like Barney's talent show, Barney's fun and games, Barney's 1234 seasons and Barney sense sational day and also Barney musical scrapbook and Barney stupendous puzzle fun or pretty good and I consider both of them the final installments on that era. Overall pretty good chapters and maybe sometime in the future maybe you might do the Lyric Studios era as well as Barney's Great Adventure the movie really incredible that the TV series was just been around for over 30 years and I am sure as happy what they're going to do with Barney next.
I remember the glass of milk song. It was more about not drinking soda. At the time kids my age loved soda only wanted that and wouldn't drink things that were healthy
I'm kind of curious which B&F cast member/character would you sing with? From the BYG i'd say Luci or Tina, Kathy and Min from B&F (Julie, Angela too). Luci because of her playing the guitar, Min because she'd dance and Julie while she's hugging her puppy, Kathy because of her teddy bear. Amy and her mom (Sandy Duncan) too from BYG too. I'd say for me, it be Leah Gloria, Becky Swonke and Sandy Duncan and Jessica Zucha and Lauren King and Pia Hamilton (just because they were part of the BYG or B&F in the early videos.) I'm just imagining Sandy telling me not to splash Becky too much, or if Leah is singing "Kookaburra" while Sandy might tickle me during that, or me and Sandy looking at Susannah Williams while she's singing "Someone to Love You Forever" and hugging her puppy, or me and Min dancing and Sandy reminds me not to trip over Pia.
I've NEVER been able to find anyone else who remembers the very first season. Everyone remembers the later seasons where they're in a public park with a squirrel and a purple bird and a 4th dinosaur called Riff. I remember watching a first or second season with my dad. They sing "Here We Go Loopty-Loo". My dad jumps up, points at the screen and says he remembers that song from when he was a kid. I remember a few episodes where they sang an Australian folk song called "Kookaburra" and my mom singing along. "Oh we sang this song when I was in Girl Scout Camp". Later an Australian band called Men At Work got sued for using the tune of Kookaburra in their song "Land Down Under" over a copyright issue. I always wondered why Men At Work got in trouble but the people who made Barney didn't. Maybe the people who made Barney got permission?
That had to be kind of hard for both of the men involved with the character of Barney, because as you say, Bob had to figure out what he could do when David moved, and David had to wait for Bob to say whatever he was gonna say, and then he had to figure out OK what do I do here? What can I do here that would fit with with whatever inflection or tone that Bob was using But I think they did it pretty well.
I really loved watching barney all the time as a kid i watch 3 seasons of it and i stopped watching barney when i started elementary school i took a interest in anime like the big one's like sailor moon DragonBall z and later on pokemon digimon
I'm kind of curious what music the first season cast liked to listen to or play when at home, for example Pia Hamilton i'm sure would like Broadway show tunes ( she's a dancer), I'm not sure about Becky Swonke (even though she wasn't in the TV show, i'll include her) i wonder if she liked rock and roll or more traditional pop, Lauren King must have liked country music and Leah Gloria, given that she really could play the guitar, likely enjoyed playing folk music in her bedroom at home (although i'd wouldn't rule country music as a favorite of hers too). I wonder about Demi, Marisa, Susannah, Selena, Jessica Zucha, Brian Epps, and even the dinos, Dao Knight, David Joyner, David Voss and Jenny Dempsey. I'll bet the dinos liked rock and roll or pop.
no one knows who truly holds the rights to Barney & The Backyard Gang right now, and 9Story is focusing streaming on platforms that aren’t Netflix currently
This is probably going to be unpopular and I’m really sorry and it in advance but even when I was a kid and even more so now the one song that I absolutely positively despise is apples and bananas song is so annoying.
*Ten seconds at the start of the Season 2 review are muted to avoid copyright issues, this is the only hiccup throughout the video, thank you!

The first three seasons are the best era, especially Season 3. I thought Season 4 was good, but not as good as in Seasons 1-3.
Facts
Hey, don't you hate on "Nothing Like A Glass of Milk."
That song SLAPPED.
I was vegan for two years and this song always came to mind. Well, they never specified it had to be cow's milk.
Michael was my favorite character
The episode with Min's Puppy that Julie ends up adopting is such a sweet story.😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤...especially if you love dogs.❤❤❤❤
First 3 are my favorites
I love Barney the Dinosaur
I do too
Bob deserved a Daytime Emmy award for the 2nd Season as did Joyner..maybe they could have shared it...after all that is one of the things Barney was known for.😊

Happy 32th Anniversary of barney and friends 🎉
and we know most of the characters did return for Sing & Dance with Barney including Michael, Tasha, Kathy and Min!
My favorite episode is sing and dance with Barney
I grew up watching various episodes with the season 1 cast and various episodes with the season 4 cast simultaneously and seeing them all interact with one another was the most beautiful thing ever at the time
i love barney friends
Sharing is caring is the one that got me into trouble 😂😂. I interpreted that lesson to mean people Share with me, not the other way around. My older sibs shut that down asap 😂😂 they still clown on over that
Tommie was both a great artist and storyteller...may he rest in peace.😊😢
I wish my memory let me remember what seasons I saw and vhs movies. I was born in 2000
I used to think Tosha was Ashley from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air lol
LOLLLL
Shawn from Season 3 is cool
With his glasses on
Yes he got older
@@arianaisabroadwaystarwitha6066 Ha ha
@hedgeonstage when will you be talking about season 4? That was my favorite season of the show!
in time
It would interesting to see your thoughts on the 1997-2000 era when the time comes. I liked season 4 and parts of season 5, but season 6 was when things began to run out of steam. I really liked that generation of cast, especially Kristen, Robert, Jeff and Kim.
How would you rank the versions of I Love You from the television show?
This is my ranking
1. Season 1
2. Season 2 (slow)
3. Season 3 (slow)
4. Season 3 (alternative faster version)
5. Season 4-6
6. Season 2 (alternative faster version)
7. Season 7- until shows cancellation
Would love to hear your input 🙂🙂🙂🙂
Thank you
I stopped liking Barney at 5 in 1995. For whatever reason kids thought I liked it and would beat me up and bully me up until 5th grade. Im saying this because I am shocked anyone would make a documentary or video essay about the pre school show on youtube.
This is the age we live in now, everything we loved as a kid is now loved and appreciated for what it was altogether
I myself stopped watching barney at 5 to cause the reasons was i was starting grade school and i took a interest anime shows like sailor moon DragonBall z tenchi monster rancher butt the most popular anime shows i liked most was pokemon and digimon
@andrewyuyoungearn2799 yeah how about you are you a huge fan of anime
@HedgeOnStage yeah I used to watch it until I was turning 6 cause I took a interest in anime my dad was telling about how the show was for younger audiences and my dad new I was getting older that's why stop watching it
I love Barney and friends
I grew up with barney I had barney everything
It's so strange that I was born '94, but I still didn't like BJ just because I thought he was a new character that didn't need to be added! I really wonder how I could think that, as he was already in the show when I was born! (Probably VHS tapes :P)
Pretty good on the early years of the barneyandfriends TV series from season 1 to season 3 if I might going to give a ranking on these Seasons then it will be something like this.
3: Season 1
2: Season 2
1: Season 3
The Lyons group era of the show is pretty unique and pretty interesting with special guest appearances, different School settings, and even different cast of the show and I cannot forget about Barney's different looks throughout I also like the home videos of that particular season like Barney's talent show, Barney's fun and games, Barney's 1234 seasons and Barney sense sational day and also Barney musical scrapbook and Barney stupendous puzzle fun or pretty good and I consider both of them the final installments on that era. Overall pretty good chapters and maybe sometime in the future maybe you might do the Lyric Studios era as well as Barney's Great Adventure the movie really incredible that the TV series was just been around for over 30 years and I am sure as happy what they're going to do with Barney next.
It's the first generation of them all.
hey, I wonder why they didn't use the word bigger in the song about the letter N.
I thought kookaburra was a public domain song
@@OakTreeIsaac A LOT of people did. I think Men At Work did as well.
R.I.P Tomie DePaola
That had to be kind of hard for both of the men involved with the character of Barney, because as you say, Bob had to figure out what he could do when David moved, and David had to wait for Bob to say whatever he was gonna say, and then he had to figure out OK what do I do here? What can I do here that would fit with with whatever inflection or tone that Bob was using But I think they did it pretty well.
Did you hear what Min said?
what are you talking about.
Baby Bop said she wants to take a nap and Min said, "Naps? Yuck."
@@TheAmazingSpiderManPeter3 Thank you, captain obvious, it's not like Hedge pointed that out IN THE FRICKIN' VIDEO or anything...
It was funny how she said it 😄😄😄😄😄😄
Baby bop is obviously doing what min hates doing and that is take naps.
I was also born in 1993
I really loved watching barney all the time as a kid i watch 3 seasons of it and i stopped watching barney when i started elementary school i took a interest in anime like the big one's like sailor moon DragonBall z and later on pokemon digimon
will you do a video about the future seasons? i was born in 1997 but i do somewhat remember some of season 3
Everything will be discussed in time
I'm kind of curious what music the first season cast liked to listen to or play when at home, for example Pia Hamilton i'm sure would like Broadway show tunes ( she's a dancer), I'm not sure about Becky Swonke (even though she wasn't in the TV show, i'll include her) i wonder if she liked rock and roll or more traditional pop, Lauren King must have liked country music and Leah Gloria, given that she really could play the guitar, likely enjoyed playing folk music in her bedroom at home (although i'd wouldn't rule country music as a favorite of hers too). I wonder about Demi, Marisa, Susannah, Selena, Jessica Zucha, Brian Epps, and even the dinos, Dao Knight, David Joyner, David Voss and Jenny Dempsey. I'll bet the dinos liked rock and roll or pop.
I could see Susannah dancing to Abba or Olivia Newton John (not sure if ONJ would be her cup of tea) Jenny i don't know about, nor Dao.
Kathy and Tosha are actually younger than Shawn (at least their actresses are).

Ask how come barney and the backyard gang and barney and friends are not on Netflix?
no one knows who truly holds the rights to Barney & The Backyard Gang right now, and 9Story is focusing streaming on platforms that aren’t Netflix currently
you know kathy
santa used to scar me when i was little
Did anyone else think the episode my favorite things was a little wild weird?
This is probably going to be unpopular and I’m really sorry and it in advance but even when I was a kid and even more so now the one song that I absolutely positively despise is apples and bananas song is so annoying.
