Hi everyone. Dinosaur Sensation is temporarily on hiatus, but is not cancelled. I'm taking time away from the series for a little while, just to make sure that when the next part comes around, it'll be even better than before. Thank you for understanding.
Well done! As writer of the show (and books, and videos, and stage shows, etc) for 16 years, I can tell you that you've done a great job here! Looking forward to Episode 2!
Mr White you are a great writer and thank you for making a major contribution to my childhood and the childhood of millions of others. I know u didn't write this particular home video feature, but Sing and Dance With Barney was my favorite as a kid

This was before I knew liking Barney at this age was considered “uncool” by my classmates and everybody just laughed at me. If there's one thing I always found weird about Barney & The Backyard Gang, it's the fact that in the earlier episodes, Barney sung the "I Love You" song at the near beginning after he comes to life. When it sounds much better as an ending song. And other times in this series, he's not the one singing it.
On the TV show, i remember Susannah Wetzel (Julie), Leah Gloria (Luci) and Jessica Zucha (Tina) sings the first verse of I Love You rather than Barney. I think those are the only ones i remmeber, does anyone else remmeber anyone else singing that part rather Barney?
I thought it was neat that Luci sings the first verse of I Love You in Spanish in "Hola Mexico!" (think that's the episode i was thinking about). I remember Tina singing that in Barney Goes to School and Julie in A Welcome Home.
It's always interesting to learn the origins of shows. Barney may have been made for kids, but it's still compelling to learn the story of the adults who made the show.
I NEED PART TWO! This is great. Amazing work. I grew up with Barney's television series around 95-98. In fact, I learned how to speak English from watching Barney. I loved Barney so much that I had the plush AND I was Barney one Halloween lmao.

This was very informative! I didn’t know Sheryl was inspired by the Wee Sing tapes to make Barney and Friends! I use to borrow those tapes all the time from my grandmother’s house! Wee Sing Together and Wee Sing In Sillyville were my two favorite ones growing up!
And as for the VHS tapes Patrick hardly payed any attention to until Sheryl found Wee Sing Together, I guess Rainy Day Finger Play & Fun Songs couldn't keep him interested either. I, on the other hand, was the exact opposite.
To tell you the truth, I'd love to see a dramatic retelling of Barney's creation a la Saving Mr. Banks or The Founder. In the right hands, I think it'd do pretty well.
Jimmy Galanis also there’s a really interesting documentary called Life After Tomorrow about the girls who appeared in Annie on Broadway, it consists of interviews of them talking about how the experience affected them. I would love for them to do a similar thing with the Barney kids
I'm still hopeful that part two will be made someday. It's been years sure, but I do also think we'd know by now if it were game over for series, so I haven't lost hope
My sister and I love Barney so much that we even wished being in the show! My sister even dreamt about the Barney Bag. I don't understand why people will hate Barney so much; it taught a lot of positivity to children, especially the power of imaginations.
Loved this! As a 30 yr old male I find myself always reminiscing my childhood and how crazy I was for Barney. The backyard gang is definitely where it all started for me. Nostalgia and warmth overcame me watching this. Still have half my Barney VHS tapes kept. I will never forget the impact this purple dinosaur and the casts had on my childhood. And I’m not ashamed to say that I still watch episodes on TH-cam when I need a dose of those innocent careless memories. PS: can’t tell you how many times I wished for my Barney doll to come to life. 😂 Incredible job on this!! 👍🏾
Wow, this was outstanding. Amazing research and background work. You've even got some attention from key people in the series, which is awesome. Also, a 90% like ratio on a Barney video is basically unheard of, in my experience. I was never a 'fan' of Barney, per se, but I'll be eagerly awaiting part 2. You deserve all the praise and attention you're receiving right now. Well done, sir.
this is such a big piece of my childhood, and it warms my heart to see this video made with such love and care(and learning about how much his creators loved and cared for him) about the history of the character.
Discovering the inspiration for this kids character is impressive. And I bet I'll be pleased when you describe this purple Pal's live show in the big Apple and some facts of seasons 1-3, even if it takes a while since the next video is a little delayed but it will so be worth it
My father told me i used to be obsessed with the dinosaur when i was a toddler. It was the only thing that could keep me still. I had merch, DVD’s, and i knew all the songs! My personal favorite was “Mr. Sun”. Watching this video opened a memory i completely forgot about. Thank you
You know...I was very little when I had myself infested with the magic of Barney and I still like him today. He has made me smile everytime I experience him for he not only is playful but very teaching in the best way with all the happiness I could have.
That'd be a holy grail, period. Regardless of who finds a recording like that, it'll be a pretty great day for both Barney fans and kids entertainment historians alike.
I guess I can somewhat understand why some people can't stand Barney but I have to agree that the show will always be my childhood along with Sesame Street
My childhood Barney was my everything to me and im a 22 year old man now and im sad that its just a memory now but it does bring BACK memories of me watching it with me and my mom but i still love him #ripmom #istilllovebarney ❤❤❤#childhoodmemories
I've also noticed one other change in the BYG series. Early on, it was made apparent that Michael and Amy owned the Barney plush in the original three episodes; however by the time of "Waiting for Santa", Barney either functions on his own free will (I'm assuming Barney was an honorary assistant/messenger boy to the Clauses in "Waiting for Santa"?) or sometimes the plushie is sometimes owned by somebody else within Michael and Amy's circle of friends (usually Tina and Luci, but Tina moreso).
I always figured Barney in plush toy form was passed around between the kids much in the same way the pants in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants were (one keeping him for a while, then the next one doing so, etc.).
There were indeed. The Barney backlash was huge in the early 90's (think of the backlash towards The Emoji Movie but hundredfold). It has certainly mellowed out in 27 years though.
@@TruelySonicHOG what made it really different was that it usually involved dark humor and talking about killing barney. There have been people that would blow up or set barney plushes on fire.
In a way, he is. Former CPTV vice president Larry Rifkin noticed that too when watching a Barney video he rented for his daughter in January 1991. That eventually led to the purple guy hitting PBS in April the following year.
Well, more like the opposite in a way. This I think is cuz Barney was a bit too hyperactive whereas Mr. Rogers was like an onscreen dad & handled things more maturely
Even though I never grew up in the 90’s, I still remember Barney as a major part of my childhood since I was just 3, the first time I saw him was the campfire sing along and Christmas one for me and my classmates. I even met him in person at Universal Studios, It’s really amazing to how the worlds most iconic purple dinosaur had went from a torn down project, to famous global popularity. Sheryl and Bob west really out done ✅ themselves for becoming legends for generations of kids who really grew up with Barney.
@@Joe_Swansons_Wheels It's pretty simple honestly. I find most episodes of the show asinine. They bore me. Barney and Baby Bop's voices are incredibly annoying imo, and I really dislike both of their modern appearances.
I checked out Wee Sing Together for curiosity's sake, and it IS pretty entertaining. No wonder Sheryl Leach was surprised by that video upon showing it to her son.
I did not know that Bob West was the original voice of Barney. I thought it was a different voice actor altogether, since he sounds completely different on the PBS show.
Yeah, from a Google search & some inferencing, I believe Dean Vendt was the big guy's voice in what we see. I wanna say he was the second or third actor. Long overdue edit: thanks to @Jace Fiore for helping with the last name
What I find impressive is the amount of research put into to this and finding some rare photos that were never seen before, even I had trouble finding information about the making of Barney. It would be really cool if you got some Barney alumni such as Bob West, David Joyner, Sheryl Leach, etc. to do an interview for this series of videos your making. Bob West has two Facebook accounts where one is his personal account and the other where he keeps in contact with fans. I even heard he will be going to conventions to meet with fans so it will be the perfect opportunity to meet him. Anyway, keep it up with this video series.
Love Barney like always but didn’t get any toys until later in life. The early Barney (Barney and the Backyard Gang) was pure nightmare fuel but Barney (Barney and Friends) seemed much happier and more wholesome.
When I was four, I watched the Backyard Gang tapes that I borrowed from a teenager who watched them as a kid and the feel was different from the PBS series, but I still enjoyed them.
Amazing!! I absolutely loved Barney as a young child. Bob West certainly is a talented man ;) I learned lots of things I never knew about Barney thanks to this informative video. Just an FYI: Some royalty free background music could help to liven up the atmosphere of the video when you’re talking and it’ll make it more inviting to listen to. Other than that tiny nitpick, I am excited for Part 2!
I grew up watching Barney in the early 90s and I’m now sharing that love with my own little boy! Thankyou for such an awesome video explaining his history. Can’t wait for chapter 2! Bring back wholesome tv like this I say
I'm 18 years old and Barney has been in my life for years since I was a toddler. I was a big fan of it until elementary school, people would make fun of me for loving it so much and I started to hate it as I got older. Until when I was almost 16 when I reunited with that show, I noticed that it means so much to my life. I still watch it till this day and I don't care what the hell people have to say about me because they can keep their hates away from me. The documentary you did was actually wonderful, you should get million likes and views. Keep going and never stop! One more thing, You're never too old to watch a TV show that means so much to you and your memories. Thank you!😁
Thanks, Kiersten! Definitely mention it to the gang at USF if you can. Hope I can make it down there again sometime (I haven't been to Barney's park since 2016).
Wow! I was obsessed with this show as a kid! Im blind and i apparently hated every other show on pbs but i was hooked on that because of the music! I probably started watching in 1994. This is fascinating!

This is really impressive, Drew! You've put an amazing amount of work into it. Congrats! It's very cool to see so many old clips and photos. Here's a question: I noticed that you didn't throw any title text over the Blockbuster ad at 21:51. Since you noted a few other things with small titles, I'm guessing that you might not have realized that the frantic mom in the ad is the fabulous Julie Johnson, voice of Baby Bop! Or did you recognize her and just keep it as an Easter egg? Either way, it's a fun little moment! Looking forward to Episode 2!
Bob West I may be a critic of the video due to it's insanely upbeat nature, but this video is very well researched. He doesn't just use TH-cam videos and wikis, but also books and newspapers. Can't wait for part 2.
Bob West There's one thing about the departure of Salim Grant that Drew didn't address. According to Barney Wiki, he and Brian Epps didn't get along at all and were at each other's throats during the taping. Is this true?
Hey, @@patrickshields5251 - I have no idea where they got that information. I don't recall ever seeing any of our cast kids arguing in any substantial way. You can't always count on a wiki for accurate info. :/

Good Lord, I feel so old watching this! I remember watching Barney when I was little. Thanks for putting this together. I'm looking forward to episode 2.

You did such a great job with this documentary I’ve been waiting for somebody to make a documentary about the origins and life of Barney now what would be really awesome is to have a full on documentary on where the Barney kids are now today and stories from behind the scenes while filming Barney and everything I thought it would be such a good idea.
Thanks! I think a full on documentary like that would be fantastic. With that said, Dinosaur Sensation is mainly about getting the story out there in some capacity (there has been no complete documentation of Barney's history prior to this documentary (let alone one this in-depth)). With this, along with Carey Stinson's own Purple Tales Podcast, there's no better time to be discovering the stories that made Barney the kid's TV icon he has become.

Jimmy Galanis also there’s a really interesting documentary called Life After Tomorrow about the girls who appeared in Annie on Broadway, it consists of interviews of them talking about how the experience affected them. I would love for them to do a similar thing with the Barney kids
That would be cool but what if it were more like a musical film a la The Greatest Showman. That would be very fun though.
@@kermitTHEdinosaur93 yeah or a bit more like bohemian rhapsody
Jimmy Galanis yes that would be a great Biopic film
I'm still hopeful that part two will be made someday. It's been years sure, but I do also think we'd know by now if it were game over for series, so I haven't lost hope
My sister and I love Barney so much that we even wished being in the show! My sister even dreamt about the Barney Bag. I don't understand why people will hate Barney so much; it taught a lot of positivity to children, especially the power of imaginations.
Awesome Behind The Scenes Look About Barney And Friends. Thanks Mate. X
There are people who make NSFW art of Barney. Let that sink in....
Rule 34, I’m afraid. 😕
@@TruelySonicHOG i never seen it- a OH GOD KILL IT WITH HOLY WATER
Waiting for Santa was my first exposure to Barney. My household had the VHS.
Thank you Mr SonicHOG
Incredible job on this!! 👍🏾
It would be nice to have some of the vintage 1980's-1990's Barney toys and videos NOW! They'd probably be worth a lot of money to collectors TODAY.
Honestly, I'd have to agree. One problem though. I personally don't but younger folk my age & under may find old Barney creepy. I don't though
You really searched deep within the memory of my childhood, when you showed those clips from We Sing Together. Lol.
As big of a Barney fan I was back in the day (and still am), the only thing I never got to do as a kid, was actually meet the purple dino himself.
this is such a big piece of my childhood, and it warms my heart to see this video made with such love and care(and learning about how much his creators loved and cared for him) about the history of the character.
Hey SonicHog, thank you for this video!
It really does explain beautifully how this childhood icon had his origin and how he became a household name
Discovering the inspiration for this kids character is impressive. And I bet I'll be pleased when you describe this purple Pal's live show in the big Apple and some facts of seasons 1-3, even if it takes a while since the next video is a little delayed but it will so be worth it
I had the Christmas special and I remember always playing it. Love the detail that went it this! :)
TH-cam recommends video about Barney
Cha cha real smooth
My father told me i used to be obsessed with the dinosaur when i was a toddler. It was the only thing that could keep me still. I had merch, DVD’s, and i knew all the songs! My personal favorite was “Mr. Sun”. Watching this video opened a memory i completely forgot about. Thank you
I didn’t know Sheryl got inspired by the Wee Sing videos to make this!
Neither did I!!
I love Wee Sing. When I was little, we had Grandpa’s Magical Toys. I was about 5 that time. I am 20 now. I will be 21 next month.
I can't say I'm surprised, really. Wee Sing Together really feels at times like a Barney precursor.
Sabrina Coleman Actually, Kaitlyn is the daughter of the other woman that Sheryl made friends with. Patrick is her only child.
@April Teniente Nice
You know...I was very little when I had myself infested with the magic of Barney and I still like him today. He has made me smile everytime I experience him for he not only is playful but very teaching in the best way with all the happiness I could have.

There were people who hated Barney that badly?! I am traumatized! I must see the second video soon to hear about it!
My dad was a member of the I Hate Barney Fan Club so uh....yes....they did
Yes. You could google anti barney humor if you want lol. Wikipedia has a whole article about it.
@@musicwiggle22 There were some folks that would destroy merchandise, but most just took their frustrations out in other ways.
This is incredibly interesting and well-done!! Thank you for sharing !!
barney was a huge part of my childhood. it’s all i could watch at my grandma’s house, but by god i want to go back.
Barney's appearance in "Backyard Gang" always scared the hell out of me
That was really well done! I didn't know that Phylicia Raschad was considered for Sandy Duncan's role
It would’ve been a MAJOR casting coup in 1988, given her work on The Cosby Show.
I kinda think barney is the dinosaur version of mister rogers
FACTS
In a way, he is. Former CPTV vice president Larry Rifkin noticed that too when watching a Barney video he rented for his daughter in January 1991. That eventually led to the purple guy hitting PBS in April the following year.
SonicHOG Now, Mr Rogers is more my cup of tea. This is one of the few PBS Kids shows I still watch today.
Steve, Bear and Barney are all in semblance to Mr. Rodgers
Even though I hate Barney, it's really charming to learn about his origins and development.
Da Nintendude I agree. This is very well researched.
That's a really strong opinion to have on an imaginary purple dinosaur

@@louib716 i know right. So many people hate the character for no fuckin reason.
@@Joe_Swansons_Wheels
It's pretty simple honestly.
I wasn’t expecting that sudden pic of Ratafak I almost jumped off my seat 😂
I did not know that Bob West was the original voice of Barney. I thought it was a different voice actor altogether, since he sounds completely different on the PBS show.
Jennifer Godstrey Bob West did the voice from 1988-2001.
Yeah, from a Google search & some inferencing, I believe Dean Vendt was the big guy's voice in what we see. I wanna say he was the second or third actor.
Long overdue edit: thanks to @Jace Fiore for helping with the last name

@Tadashi Satoru Ah, okay. I can't wait for that to come out! From the articles I've read about it, it sounds "Super-Dee-Duper!"
I know right? That photo at 12:22 is ultra rare :O

This is SUCH a great documentary, especially for students studying Early Childhood Education. Wonderful work!!

@@patrickshields5251 Why yes I am! :)

Bob West There's one thing about the departure of Salim Grant that Drew didn't address. According to Barney Wiki, he and Brian Epps didn't get along at all and were at each other's throats during the taping. Is this true?
