  • This is a ride review of the new Vittoria Peyote and Mezcal XC race tires. I compare them directly with the Specialized Ground Control T7 and the Vittoria Syerra. The results are surprising!

    Good review. Good videoing. Agree on pointing the camera away from the face.

    I ran a Mezcal 2.6 Front with a 2.35 Rock Razor rear in the SE (GA mainly). Lots of hardpack and clay with granite and small roots on my local rides. I ride SS hardtails. The Mezcal rolls fast for sure, and I never got any punctures. The sidewalls of the Mezcal doesn't weep anywhere as much as the Rock Razor with Supertrail either. Right now I'm running a 2.6/2.4 front/rear Nobby NIcs because it is what came on my new bike. Fantastic ride, but the Nics are way too much tire for local conditions. Nics are heavy too at 1080g/900g. I plan to go back to the Mezcals, but will likely go to the new 2.4 Mezcal XC Race front and rear (might opt for the XC trail 2.35 version on the rear since sidewalls of the rear take more beating than the front). The 2.6 was a bit big on my 25mm internal width rims. The 2.4 Mezcals seem like a sweet spot and are only 740g, which would be a huge weight savings. That Peyote is tempting though, and more like the Rock Razor I had before (which Schwalbe stopped making in 29"). Of note too, the casing on the 2.6 Mezcal is larger than the 2.6 Nobby Nic and has more volume. Don't know if that is consistent across the Vittoria range.

      I just put a mezcal on the rear and it has been sitting for 2 days now with no sealant and it hasn't lost any pressure.

    Nice vid, I'm really interested in these. Usually the Barzo/Mezcal combo is popular and can cope with a lot, so I'm thinking this is more of a dry weather combo... Maybe a new Barzo is in the works?

    • @KlintonSilvey
      @KlintonSilvey  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It might be. I have had a barzo before, but the "wet" conditions where are live isn't much mud (some for sure). It's more wet rocks and roots and the barzo doesn't "stick" as well as these. It wants to dig. I would rather have this mezcal in the wet (at least in Missouri)

      @@stevehendricks3835 I think at that bike park I was running 28 rear and probably 24 front. But I'm about to do an update video. These tires (like all true cross country, race tires) just can't survive with me on them out on some rougher back country

    Great info, and good to know these tires can hold their own on the MO rock-stuff. Have you run Barzo up front? I race the One-eyed-dog and BT Epic, most recently ran regular Rekon (3C MaxTerra) Front and Rekon Race rear (DC, 60 TPI). Like this set up but been thinking Barzo front and Mezcal rear next time around. I like that new Mezcal is 60 TPI, as i have found that single ply 120 TPI does not hold up on our rocks

    • @KlintonSilvey
      @KlintonSilvey  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hold up there Jim... I have an update coming. I would go double mezcal. Not sure the peyote can go the distance at the BT (at least not for me)

      I’m doing the BT Epic and am curious on your thoughts. I ran an Aspen and Rekon last year.

    • @KlintonSilvey
      @KlintonSilvey  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@user-wh7zu3gf4q I think if you're going to do the Epic you need to use something equivalent to vittoria's trail casing/exo+ on the rear. Unfortunately, the peyote only comes in XC race I believe. Traction is fine but I have ended up puncturing. These casings pretty bad on both the mezcal and Peyote

      @@user-wh7zu3gf4q I have not had consistent results with a 120 TPI rear tire when riding Ozark trails, have gotten punctures sometimes whereas to date I have not had issues with 60 TPI. I see folks running Aspens there so must be OK, but not for me (full gear I am 187 lbs)

    I have a fully electric MTB bike. I mainly ride on hard paths in the forest. What tires should I buy in size 29x2.4?

    • @KlintonSilvey
      @KlintonSilvey  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would get something more grippy and heavier for e-bike. Something like a mazza or mostro enduro race for the front and than maybe the plain enduro (faster rolling to save battery) for the rear if you want to stick with vittoria. Whatever brand, stick with at least an "enduro" casing to avoid flats

    • @bartoszgaudyn6801

      @@KlintonSilvey Thank You for your answer. Currently on the front I have: Maxxis Minion DHF, 3C, Maxterra, EXO+, TR, 29" x 2.5" WT and Maxxis Minion DHR II, 3C, Maxterra, EXO+, TR, 29" x 2.4" WT. I think this tire is too aggressive for my routes. I'm thinking about changing to Vittoria Mezcal 2.35 or PIRELLI SCORPION 2.4. Do you think these tires will be suitable for eMTB on forest paths?

    • @KlintonSilvey
      @KlintonSilvey  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@bartoszgaudyn6801 if you think those are too aggressive (and if you want to stay Vittoria) maybe the agarro is your best bet. I just don't see a good reason to go down in traction on an e-bike unless you're trying to maximize battery life, though. A mezcal will get you more distance but overall will be slower on an e bike because it's all about corner speed on an e-bike. If you're not running out of battery, I would stick with whatever gets you the most grip.

    • @KlintonSilvey
      @KlintonSilvey  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope. Need to make an update video. The Peyote is so fun... Unless you live somewhere with lots of little pointy rocks. Unfortunately, my local trails are rugged and I will simply puncture too much.

    I have pair of Syerra's I think buy this new Peyote 2.4 and put it on the back in my ATB Marin Muirwoods , Syerra front Peyote back.

    How wide does the Peyote come out to?

    • @KlintonSilvey
      @KlintonSilvey  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I didn't measure with calipers but it seems like it would be awfully close to a true 2.4. I'm not worried about a few millimeters. It's definitely a solid 2.3. And I do think riding it has stretched it out just a bit.
