How to keep Fat Bike Tires from going flat - Off Road Wheelchair Upgrade

  • There are a few different ways to keep bike tires from going flat. Especially with the tires on our off road wheelchair, we want as much protection as possible. A flat in the middle of nowhere would be a difficult situation to fix. So preventative maintenance is the best kind of maintenance. THESE are the Tuffy liners we used: amzn.to/2T5YTiT
And THIS is the Slime we added to the tire. amzn.to/2T5YYDd (You don't fill up the entire tube, just enough squirts to coat the inside of the tube.)

Nice my grandpa and i did something similar to my bike when i was like 10/11 years old but we took 2 old tyers cut of the sides a bit not the whole side and put them inside the new tyers then reasembled everything worked great, he said that it was an old trick from his youth and had been used on old militarybikes to prevent flats. My grandpa was a great man RIP Grandpa i miss you.

Great tutorial! Another layer of protection I use on top of all this is to cut the old tube and wrap it around the new tube. Then if a hard deep thorn does get through, and they still can, the new tube leaks slime and bonds to the old tube to seal the hole very well.

  • @jacksonevans9288

What you can also do is go completely tubeless. You don’t even need the tube in the tire, all you need is tubeless ready rims (it needs to have specific rim tape on it), tubeless tires, and slime or sealant. You can run even lower tire pressures, for more grip, and if you get a thorn in the tire, the sealant will seal the puncture and you can keep riding👌 I personally ride this setup on my own mountain bike and it changes the whole feel of the bike, very rad🤘

There are a number of videos on how to go tubeless here on TH-cam. You might find that they are even more reliable than your setup. Just as long as you remember to add sealant every six months or so. Even if the tire goes flat. It might seal itself if you pump it back up. You can still use a tube if all else fails. My bamboo fat bike has three years and a ton of miles on a set of tubeless fat bike tires.

Heyo! Another option you could look at with the tires, is a completely tubeless setup with a better tire, and then a cush core foam insert around the rim if there is one for it. The idea is similar to the slime, but you don't have the weight of the inner tube. Less rotational weight mean more runtime, and the tubeless lets you run lower pressures to get more traction. Additionally, the cush core will save the rim from some extent of damage in the case of having to roll on a flat. I will point out, if those are the stock tires, the casing material is probably not that good, so investing in a better tire with a more durable casing material could be a major long term investment.

You should convert the wheel to tubeless. In doing so you greatly increase puncture resistance and lower the weight. Lowering of the weight would make it go for longer distances.

Tubeless is a good idea, however if you DO get a puncture on a tubeless setup, the maintenance is time-consuming and messy. Much worse than just changing inner tubes. You give and take, and I think this idea is a good give.

Dang. True that those things may prevent flats. But the added rolling weight requires a LOT more energy to push. It may be a good choice for some folks to use tire liners and/ or sealant (btw, there are more effective brands), others may find the extra effort and slower ride is not worth it.
Just something to be aware of for those who are thinking about puncture resistance. Oh, I have also heard some tires are made with a kevlar belt for that, but I have no experience and don’t know how well they work.
    Thanks for the great video!

Hello. I have seen your videos on the Off-Road Wheelchair (ORW). I know you made that some time ago. I have to say that I like the ORW. I just recently became wheelchair bound myself due to a leg amputation. As much as I would love to get something like that for myself, I know I will not be able to afford one. I am on SSDI Income. This puts me on a very low income and makes it impossible to afford something like this. I am also much heavier than you are so that is another thing against me. However great job and keep up the good work. BTW Two ideas I would suggest is to make it where the 'normal wheelchair could be stored for use when in places that do not allow 'bikes' to be used and a wagon/cart for hauling things like groceries and other items

Or..... just set it up tubeless. It works the same way as on a car tire with tubeless specific tires and I don't know if your rims are tubeless ready or not. You put the tire on as normal but without the tube (it might be a bit tight) and you can put sealant in it to plug holes as you ride. It is more efficient because there is less friction and you can't get pinch punctures (where the tube gets pinched between tire and rim on a hard impact) which means you can use lower tire pressures to absorb bumps better and get more grip. May not be necessary in this case but it's what all proper mountain bikers use.

As a lifelong tire man, slime don’t work. Also, use an old tube, split down the middle all the way around and place the new tube inside it. Valve stem removed of course. I use it in heavy duty off road applications. It fits perfectly and gives heavy thickness.

  • @aidanmartzloff
    @aidanmartzloff 4 ปีที่แล้ว

You could also just go tubeless, which is most likely cheaper, it makes the wheels lighter (yes it actually makes a good difference) and if you get a puncture, the tubeless sealant will most likely seal it up, and you also can't get pinch flats from going over curbs or something which would be perfect for this bike, and you can also run lower pressure in the tires for more grip.

Try drilling holes in the side of the tires. Fill the tire with window sealant foam. Be sure to put a little water in the tire, before, the foam. It activates the foam.

How about "Earth Explorer" for a name. "the EE Ride." This was a really great Idea. Thanks for posting.

You can also run it tubeless with sealant

In stead of liner you can use your punctured inner tube by cutting it open and wrapping your new tube inside it. It more eco friendly and you don't have to buy liner...

I been doing just the slime and works great but once you put slime in a tube and its been in there a while or you store the bike for a while that slime will kind of expire and that tube is junk and will need to be replaced. the liner does not always work Ive had thorns go through the liner.. but having both is your best defense.
