"I'm not saying the Thai man was a thief" 4min 16 sec = you have an arrangement for a service and pay for it; then the other party disappears = If that is not the definition of a THIEF, then I am a MORON.

Rob, the same thing happens here in the States. Never pay a handyman in full til the job is done.

  • @ThailandThisWeek

Never pay up front in Thailand or anywhere. Once someone has your money you are no longer important.

Because in Thailand he can then take you to court and sue you for defamation. Its the same if you loan someone money, if you tell anyone else that a person owes you money you can be sued.

Sounds like BS to me. If let people walk all over you they will. Stand up for your self. Never pay up front. Use a local that you trust. To make the agreement. Pay after the work is completed. TH-cam has so many stories of there scams. Like everywhere else in the world. Start by holding them accountable.

Yep, Rob was playing it smart. There are already some well known cases of hotels suing guests that left them bad reviews. You take the good with the bad, in Thailand if you like living there... The idea that you’re going to go over there as a Westerner and “start holding them accountable”, is also pretty arrogant and laughable, I must say...

Speaking of tips. Do you give tips after a meal or a massage as tipping is not really a thing over there. And if you tip, what is your general rule of how much.

Restaurant: 10% is the norm. Not 20% like in the West. They will be happy with 10%

Australia is the same as Thailand as far as trades. You pay a portion upfront so they can buy equipment to do the job as a deposit or for goodwill but generally if you are asked to pay in full upfront then get someone else because we have a lot of cowboys and crooks that if paid upfront will disappear without doing the job.
We also have people who pay nothing up front and then won't pay once the job is done. So they are everywhere.

Hey Man, another great vid, Thankyou 🙏. I know your not really big on eating but I have to ask you; do you have any recommendations on authentic pizza in Phuket, like wood fired Napolis style? In Phuket? I remember a place in Patong that had a great oven in the center of the restaurant but that was along time ago. Anyways, you should hit the restaurant scene just that bit more often and of course share your experiences with up. Keep up the good work man and I’m happy you enjoy Thailand so much. 👍

Is it true Rob that they don't charge for labor in Thailand? For instance my girlfriend in Thailand just had air conditioning unit installed. She just paid for the unit, no labor charges. Unlike usa 🇺🇸 they charge for installation & equipment. Probably for just thai people not for farang! BTW quess who paid for the A/C unit! Farang...🤪

If you hire a handyman for a job buy the materials yourself and make sure they don't walk off with any leftovers. Pay for labor only

“Loaning” money as a foreigner in Thailand, or anywhere in SE Asia, is not a good idea (as you’re finding out)... Either give it freely as a gift or just don’t give it at all. Like Rob said, Thais don’t really “save” like we do in the West. Planning/Saving for the future is not really given much thought. I think that kind of thinking is a carry over from Buddhism, that focuses on being present in the “here & now.” Unfortunately this kind of outlook sets them up to be ill equipped financially for situations like global pandemics, lock downs and repayment if personal loans.... Just the way it is over there though and of course I’m also speaking in generalities. There will always be those who fall outside the norm and do save. Take the good with the bad. 🤷‍♂️
