How And Why To Protect Bow Drill Embers From The Wind

  • The ignited dust pile has sit there and slowly cook for a couple of minutes to coalesce. This makes the dust pile become one solid mass that will not break apart when placed into the tinder bundle. A well coalesced ember seems to be much hotter also.
When the wind is blowing, though, it will quickly use up that dust pile which never lets it coalesce. The simple fix? I like to put my tinder bundle directly onto the ignited dust pile so it can cook for a couple of minutes and slowly transform into the more solid ember.
NEVER! Use wood straight off the ground with its bark still on for bow drill!!!... until you have skills! (See my Drying Cycles Playlist below).
BTW, It should be obvious this video started out being about how quickly one could make a functional bow drill set from materials straight off the ground. It WAS quick. I made the set, got an ember, and then the flames in just 14 1/2 minutes.

Hi David! I've been fighting plumbing trouble all day, so I was late to this video. As always, I enjoyed the demo. Thanks!

I went to the woods today to find material. I live in Central Florida and the options are limited for me. I need to know what to look for in my area. I have lots of oak and pine. Palm trees and scrub oaks, palmetto bushes make good tinder but nothing for board or spindle.

@DavidWest would you consider holding classes on primitive fire making? 🔥🫡
