I wanted to show you that great fatwood can be found in dead pine branches where they join the tree. The Virginia Pine branch I chose for the demo seemed “snapping” dry throughout, but not so much! The dead pine needles and snapping branch tips fooled me. It was actually still mostly alive. I was pleased to find the butt end of the branch contained the usual 4 inches of rich fatwood, but it was very moist! I decided to proceed anyway and see how well it would ignite with my Ferro Rod. David.....your mind is analytical like mine. Not sure if is due to my engineering back ground, but like you, I am pretty much precise in everything I do. I come from an areospace design background in addition to high pressure testing on valves and actuators.....drives my wife nuts. She says everything I do is over complicated and precise. She doesnt complain when I fix everything she breaks! Have no problem with you being who you are. You have drfinately made me a better survivalist and fire starter. Got all your techniques down to a science. I use fero rods but I try to create fire as if I have nothing and SHTF has occured. Friction was my biggest challenge but after listening to you and using your texhniques I finally mastered it. I will say that something that you cant show through a video is getting the feel for materials. You can show us viewers what materials to use and gather but you cant show us the feel. Walkig around the woods on our property I can just about pick the materials that will work by just touching them. I guess it is moisture content that makes some the materials we use work better then others. I did a test one time by gathering fuels such as leaves, small pieces of wood and bark. Although each stack was of the same material, so e felt different then others and it transitioned into how fast I could get ignition. I thouroughly enjoy your videos. Great learning sessions.
So true. Many have asked me how soft a hand drill fire board should be for best results? I give them my best descriptive answer. They should be pre-punk. Even if I further explain, the wood should be highly degraded but not punky, everyone still has to get out there and practice with multiple boards to figure out what I’m talking about. Lol! BTW, I’ve always been interested in amounts, quantities, measurements, costs, sizes, weights, etc. I just love that kind of information.
Hi David! I just saw that Felix Immler featured your channel on his latest video. I guess Felix knows a fire making boss when he sees one! I am keeping a close eye on that farrow rod because I know it is going to snap before too long.
Today you are using the Mora stainless but yesterday you were using the putty knife knife. Have you tried the $3 Mora copy in the fishing section at Walmart? Usually in the fishing section on the shelf near the filet knives. Good video!

Thank you! Will do!
Wonderful video Mr west I appreciate you sharing 👍👌🔥
Thanks for watching!
Quite useful to be able to keep count, my friend!
Lol, most of my life I thought everybody did.

Yes, search David west $3 Walmart bait knife
👍😃✌️💪🔥
I think the counting starts with 1/8” welding rod = 125 amps.
Root and filler with 6010 then cover it up with 7018.
Why not strike the sides of the ferro rod or going all around as it goes ? Do you have better longevity results like this ?
The key ring Acts as a handle… in 2 positions.
David, any tips on how to get the resin off a saw blade?
I always use WD40 now but have used alcohol and alcohol containing products, a lot, in the past.
Is your Razor back saw a 7" or a10" ?
I keep forgetting that there’s the smaller one out there or else I would mention that it’s a 10” more often. Search: David West Corona Razortooth Saw.
TH-cam keeps taking it upon themselves to unsubscribing me from channels, your included......
It happens to other people and other channels also. What's up with that, TH-cam?
