Frederick is such a gentleman! Thank you for taking the time to watch the video. Hopefully parts of it inspire you to look into horizontal hives as a potential hive option.
@@Kat_Andrews I’m going to make my brood frames double deeps in length and build my hives into a building. On mediation, where I can’t be exposed to prolonged sunlight. I’m going to put the flow frames above. The craftsmanship that went into your hive is masterful. ❤️
@@halleyvolo5868 yes, it is unfortunate that beekeeping is such a ‘summer sport’ that requires us to be out in the sun for long periods of time. I have seen a few hives from mainly Scandinavian countries that have their hives built into buildings or trailers (for pollination), which allows them to inspect from within a building. Hopefully your design goes well and best of luck! I am lucky that my husband is a bit of a perfectionist and is such a creative designer too.
Hello Kat! This is a great video demonstration regarding how Flow-Frames can be used in a Horizontal Configuration! One of my viewers asked if I'd seen this video yet, and that' brought me here. I'll mention your video to my viewers today, absolutely fantastic. I also like that you incorporated readily available trays. Daz and Mandy? Well, imagine the surprise of seeing my friends in your video! Bonus! I'm sure they are top-rate mentors!
Hey Frederck, yep, Daz and Mandi are great and they mention you often, always with affection. Thank you for your kind words, always appreciated. After making this hive my husband made me a second one. There was a couple of small differences and minor improvements so I did another wee video showing those as well. Luckily it’s only a couple of minutes long, and not the marathon session that this video was. th-cam.com/video/v5e9cPqYmLQ/w-d-xo.html
Was a pleasure to be able to help you with your install Kat. Super impressed with the hive and it's concept. Really looking forward to seeing the girls make full use of it. Wishing you and your girls a very productive season.
Great design I certainly like it a lot. Realised after watching your video, Fredrick Dunn then did a shout out to you. So I’m glad I got to watch your video a second time. All systems go once the lid goes all the way down 👍. I’m sure they’ll beeee happy little bees in their new home/hive. Thanks for sharing TrickyTrev 🇦🇺👍🐝🍯
Verry nice bee hive. Your husband did a verry nice job! Congratulations! I saw other “horizontal flow hive” video’s with the flow frames in the same direction of the brood chamber frames but bees did not go further than 3 Flow frames so this idea could be the solution for that issue. Bravo!
Fred is an awesome man, thanks for stopping by. It’s been good so far, especially with my sore shoulder. Has also been great not having to do any heavy lifting any more.
Popped over from Frederick Dunn Channel. Wow, there is a lot of great details that are practical and well thought out. You could (if you have not yet) add a handle to the lid so it is easier to pull the lid over when closing without catching your fingers.
Hey Kennith, thanks for watching both videos, I appreciate your time. We have been planning this hive for ages to get the best out of both the langstroth design, as well as the Flow Hive designs, basically trying to get the best of both hives. I never seem to be at risk of catching my fingers as I bring the lid right down, then grab the top lip to pull it forward and into position.
G’day Kat … another Aussie across the bloody big pond in SoCal. Frederick Dunn said to drop by… glad I did. Looks like a wonderful conversion of Flow Frames into a Long Langstroth. I wonder what Cedar has to say. Are you fellas up in the Northern Rivers NSW by any chance? I was originally from Bellingen. Take care good luck. Looking forward to the follow-ups. Cheers, Johno
@@thegr8stm8 Fred is a good bugger. But he did get one thing wrong, I’m actually a kiwi, living in South Canterbury, South Island of NZ. There have been a few of us now, making long hives out of our flow hives. It’s working well so far. I’ll be posting a progress video up in a couple of days.

Very interesting design, very creative and innovative, flow hive in long hive supper, but it would be nice you upload the plans for this wonderful hive
I've had Flow Hive for 9 years, since the original Indigogo. This is absolutely fantastic! I love what you've done and can't wait to see how your girls take to it. Please keep it up and keep us posted. (Any chance you'll be making your drawings available?)
Hi, With the flow frames going in a different direction and having the slight tilt, can you use foundation less frames in the brood area? Or do they need to be wax frames?
Those unisex pisstrays fairly cracked me up Kat, top solution to not fouling the ground. Heh. That hinge in lid design is worthy of a design award, most impressive and will be copied! Not a fan of huge broodnests as bees tend to get 'lazy' in them I do like your two hive concept here as a temporary thing. Rather chuffed to see you have pretty much ALL the FloHive frame problems catered for... a very obvious sign of the thought put into the total design. 10/10 (5 Stars)
Gotta give them somewhere to pee 🤣 Thanks for your comments Shad. I went through all the things I liked about FH and langstroth, then everything I didn’t like and tried to eliminate those. I’m really happy with it. Hubby is already making a few tweaks to the design before he starts building the next one (already named Beekingham Palace). He’s a keeper, that man, and he’s not even a beekeeper.
Do you happen to have any plans that are available for constructing this? I've been fascinated by the concept of the horizontal hives plus the flow frames for some time and I LOVE seeing this coming out more. Thank you!!
Unfortunately hubby has decided not to release the plans as there are too many variables. For instance, the wood available between the first and second build changed, and the thickness was different, which made a difference of 6mm all around the hive, so he had to redesign the whole thing to account for the different ply. And then he made tweaks and changes on the fly as he was building etc. so he says it would not be possible to build it properly directly off his plans. Do like what we did, write a list of must haves, then nice to haves. The. Build them into your own design.
Hi Kat .. Just awesome - Paul needs to be given an extra Christmas present ... Is there any chance of gaining the plans to make please..... I am in Brisbane... being a veteran with lower back injuries.... this would help in non lifting ... Again Well done ...
I had to rewind that and turn on CC to find out those are pest trays, not trays that had been out drinking all night. I'm like surely those are just trays maybe pissed trays is just what they call them.....
Haha, yep, the good ol’ Kiwi accent strikes again 😂 it’s where the bees go to sleep off the hangover when they’ve been juicing up on fermented nectar. The guard bees won’t let the drunks in the hive so they sleep it off on the pissed trays. 😂
I was thinking about building my own and randomly found your video. This is amazing. Thank you!!
Hope it helps you come up with a plan that works for you.

There was one from the end of the season, but not a full 12 months. Nothing changed over winter so no point doing a video at 12 months.

How do the bees take care of their dead with that robbing screen on? Wouldn’t the dead just pile up at the screen?
Not that I have seen. The bees just haul them up and over.
