Aurora Australis 11th October 2024
On the evening of the 11th October 2024 we had a coronal Aurora Australis. It had been going off all day, but we couldn't view it until nightfall. It peaked about 11pm, then the clouds started to roll in.
My mother was staying with us at the time, and so she managed to see her first aurora. Hence the choice of thumbnail picture.

Perform Vinegar Acid Titration at Home
มุมมอง 825ปีที่แล้ว
When making home-made vinegar, it helps to know the acidity of the product you have made. Generally by law, it cannot be called vinegar unless it is a minimum of 4% acidity. If you wish to use what you have produced in canning or preserving, like pickling, then it does need to be between 4-5% acidity. So doing acid titration will give you this information. It is easy to do, requires very little...

Horizontal Flow Hive - Hive inspections and update

It's been 7 weeks since I put the bees into the brand new Beeston Castle, and 4 weeks since the other colony took up residence in Beekingham Palace. So how are the bees doing, and how are the hives working for me? I have been into the hives since the bees were installed, but this is the first time I have had a chance to film them.

Hi Mss. Andrew. Thank you very much for your video and the clear explanations. I have been trying to make wine vinegar for ages but never got right results. I was not diluting the wine . So thank you very much I will follow your instructions
Excellant video. Thank you for making it easy to understand in a clear way without any distractions.
This is fantastic kat!
Absolutely beautiful Kat.👍🐝🍯🇦🇺
Stunning Kat! 😍
Nice video ❤
👍👍👍
❤
My question is the wine needs to be diluted so that osito factor can do its thing what about all the vinegar wouldn't that dilute it
Why not use brix level
just bought a flow hive off FB marketplace and it is DIRTY. this video is exactly what i needed to learn how to break it down and put it back together. Thank you Kat
Very interesting like to know more about this
I have Kenwood Major titanium , Is this pattern good for my Kenwood Major titanium?
So when it’s done will it have a new mother that can be kept for another batch?
If I just had patience 😂😂😂 sorry thank you.
it sounds like it's trying to be an alien transmission from the future when it vibrates.
Thank you your process worked for me, can I add store bought wine without adding more peroxide and water?
This is awesome❤
Did you buy this from Flow Hive or invent it yourself?
Hi Are the plans available?
Привет, струбциной на 50-70 сантиметров сжать немного, и легче вставить провода, . Актуально слегка сжать. Удачи вам.
How do you clean it?
Won't the bees repair the broken slices with beeswax themselves?
Do you have plans for this and would you still have the flow frames or not?
Hi, With the flow frames going in a different direction and having the slight tilt, can you use foundation less frames in the brood area? Or do they need to be wax frames?
Hi Kat, where did you get this flow hive from? thank you
Wouldn't it be better if the frame was in the locked position? looks like the frame is in the cracked open position.
that was a great video thank you - can i ask do you know what the thing connecting the two wires together is called? I have managed to break my wire and need a way to make it circular again
It would help if you have a box to hold it in
This is so helpful, thank you!

FANTASTIC VIDEO - Exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to see how these frames work, and you literally answered every question I had - it's like you read my mind. :) Thank you!
Thanks Kat will have to start now seeing we now have Varroa over here in Oz. Do you treat with other organic chemicals? Could you vapourize Thyme oil using the wand? Francine
thank you!!
what if I didn't dilute the wine and it's been sitting for a.week. Can I dilute it now and add the appropriate amounts of AC Vinegar w Mother? Or, do I need to start over.
Yeah, that’s fine. Just whack a bit of water or grape juice in their and it’ll be right.
has the plans been made available for this hive?
No. Hubby decided not to release plans as there are too many variables.
Hi Kat. Have been following your progress from Aussie. Great info thanks. Just wondering how the girls went with the flow frames this year as our season is about to wrap up? Did they get in and fill them up? Thanks again for all your time and effort. Francine
They didn’t. Second season not really touching the frames. This winter we will put them in langs and hubby will modify the hives so the frames are all going in the same direction.
@@Kat_Andrews That's a shame, it's such a great idea, finding the boxes a bit heavy now I'm getting older . Yes I was thinking that might make a difference changing the orientation of flow frames.
@@francinekeane9900 fingers crossed. We’ll see how it goes next season. Just did a honey harvest in the spinner from the two hives and got 35kg of honey, so that was pretty good.
Hi, Kat! Just wanted to let you know that I started another batch. The last one turned out absolutely fantastic! I used your calculations again and am hopeful that I will have strong vinegar again in about four weeks. Would going five weeks or six weeks “seal the deal” a little better, do you think? I just need to know when to screw on the solid lid to stop the exposure to air. Cheers from Logsden, Oregon! ❤
Do acid titration tests and that will tell you where you are at.
I've had Flow Hive for 9 years, since the original Indigogo. This is absolutely fantastic! I love what you've done and can't wait to see how your girls take to it. Please keep it up and keep us posted. (Any chance you'll be making your drawings available?)
Hey thanks that was really informative. Do you know what your final ph was? Cheers
This was great. Thanks. Questions. Have an old vinegar from my mom who passed. Was always strong and great but got weak over the years. Made some home made wine a few years ago. Decided to add it to mom’s old vinegar as was running low. Has been a few years now and seems like half wine and half vinegar. There is an inch or two of mother on the bottom. Am trying to get it back up to propper strength. That said: Peroxide: not needed as no sulphates in home made wine. Alcohol: no idea how strong the wine was - but not overly. How do I decide if I should add water? What would you do? Should I simply get some braggs and test .25 braggs to wine by weight and give it a month? Thinking of trying a few tests in a few mason jars. Have about 4 gallons in a large old plastic olive container she used for decades. What would you do? In advance, thanks so much!!!
Super
Bonjour, Avez vous une vidéo, ou une procédure pour tout assembler et comment attacher et tendre les câbles (fil) en acier ? Merci beaucoup
th-cam.com/video/RUrc1gu2o4M/w-d-xo.htmlsi=VqgdO3q0Mp1W15wr
Excellent video. Converting cider we don't like into ACV. We plan on using this for cooking. I added a bottle of Braggs to my full 3 gallon carboy. If it is too weak, <4%, will more time help? If it is too strong, >5%, should I dilute with distilled H2O?
What abv% was your cider? And what volume is your bottle of Braggs? More time won’t make it stronger as it is a direct corrolation between abv and acidity.
@@Kat_Andrews I don't have exact numbers but I assume the cider is around 5%. No sugars were added and it fermented dry. (assuming 1.000) I think it was the 16 oz. Bragg. There are over 3 gallons in the carboy.
@@Kat_Andrews correction 32 oz. bottle of Braggs.
@@paddymeboy7741okay, let’s do some math and work our way through it. Assuming 5%abv and exactly 3 gallon (384oz) 384 oz x 5% = 1920 1920 / 416 (384 oz of cider plus 32oz of Braggs) = 4.61% This is what the abv has been diluted down to with the addition of the braggs. While it is possible for vinegar to convert on a straight 1:1, I calculate for 80% conversion, this allows for a bacteria that may not be strong, evaporation, environmental factors etc. So, 4.61% x 0.8 (80%) = 3.69. So your vinegar can be expected to end up somewhere between 3.7 - 4.6%. This is where acid titration is so handy as it can tell you how close you are getting. If you test a week apart and you watch the numbers rising, 3.0, 3.2, 3.5, 3.8, 4.1, 4.3, 4.5, then they drop, 4.4, then that shows you have gone past the maximum conversion and now the bacteria is starting to consume the acetic acid. If this happens, bottle it quickly and keep air in the bottle to an absolute minimum.
@@Kat_Andrews You are amazing! I am still going to try to test it and it's only had the mother for a month or so! Thank you! Very interesting about the numbers rising. I will get testing!
Thank you for explaining this so simple
After looking at this, I don't understand the price for the frames.
Is it ok to use non food grade hydrogen peroxide? And what’s the difference? Thanks for any help.
