I am thinking about building a Leo Sharashkin horizontal hive. My detractor is not having a centrifuge for extraction. I may end up building top bar hives instead. I am female and can't lift the full Langstroth supers. I am from Ohio. LOVE the barn. So many great features! The frame hanger in the roof is ingenious. Thank you for sharing a fabulous adaptation of Americana.
Haven't made a horizontal hive yet. Watching what others have done to use ideas that I like. The barn style is awesome, but a lot of work I'm sure. Commenting from Bartlesville, OK
Middle of B.C., Canada. Made 3 horizontals last winter, used 3/8 ply with 1.5" polystyrene sandwiched walls. Your design is great, I might have a go at it, but make it take med supers on top. I have one that does this, and the capacity is brilliant, and still so easy to work with. The built in frame holder, very nice!!
Hi from Alberta. Made two horizontal...I .left it with removable lid...when I use follower boards i can have three colonies in the one langstrothe if I so choos, each with own entrances... I use three -10 frame inner covers over the frames. I had thought I might want to put honey supers on each colony. I'll wait to see how big the colony gets. Last year I used it for queen rearing...worked great.
Hey Janet from Alberta, I would love to know more about your creation. Could you send me some pics or a video to see what you have done. Would love to learn about your queen rearing in a horizontal as well. Halejohnjr@gmail.com. Thank you.
Though I am not sold on the Langstroth Horizontal Hive just yet, I do like the concept and love what you did. Very impressed with your craftsmanship and imagination. Well Done! I am from Lexington, Kentucky the heart of the Bluegrass state.
Building my first horizontal hive and this is the most adorable thing I have seen. I was just looking for lid ideas and now am brainstorming my second hive. Thank you.
Your hive looks like the barn I built my wife a few years ago. After she saw your hive I am going to have to built one to match. Your attention to detail on the outside is great. We live in Maine
Great looking horizontal hive. Well thought out and functional. If those bees ever swarm and do a natural split they are going to be building hive in a neighbor's barn, as it is familiar territory.
I have been looking at a lot of horizontal hives to get inspiration for the one I am planning to make this winter. I have seen a lot of fancy functionalities, but I love how yours combine design and functionality. I think I just might have to copy some of your ideas 😃 I like the barn look, and I also like the frame holder that's incorporated in the lid. Very clever and it looks great. Well done. Best regards from Denmark 🐝🇩🇰
From Colorado, and I love this look! We’ll be starting beekeeping when we get some land in a couple years, so far this is one of my fave hive designs. Looks fun, but especially love the frame holder in the lid. Very clever!
Big Sweeties Honey Co. Dover Ohio. Beautiful job sir, and I love the thought you put into the functional aspects like handle covers and especially the frame rest. My Grandfather was a beekeeper, woodworker, and farmer. He got us boys started on our career paths and hobbies. Experimenting with top bars last 2 years and trying to find the sweet spot. Looking at building the long lanstroth to keep using the same equipment as my regular hives. Great craftsmanship!
I am from Oklahoma. I just found your bee barn. That is cool. We are looking to get into bees and the horizontal hives are what we are going with. Great job. Thank you for the video. God Bless.
I really like the detail you put into the hive. I particularly like the frame holder idea. It's interesting that I was just making drawings for making one myself so seeing that detail sent me right to my drawing to add it to mine. Thanks
Great look, man! Nice work! Building my own, I was also thinking of putting a frame holder inside the cover. Thinking swing out bars though so each can hold maybe 5-7 (ish) frames. Anyway, you did awesome work! A+ on function and aesthetics! Jeff - Richmond, Va.
Looks awesome; what a great build, your horizontal Hive is a work of art, a very functional piece of garden furniture, as well as upper-class housing for your bees. I have built myself 2 horizontal Langstroth hives so far, the first takes around 22 frames the second takes around 32. I have a total of over 35 hives and I eventually want to have most of my colonies in horizontal hives. as they are so much better to work withe than the stacking 10 frame boxes. I live in Adelaide, South Australia.
Great hive! Vermonter here doing some research into building hives and beginning beekeeping in the spring. Definitely incorporating your idea into my bee-yard!
Wow, beautiful job! I really like all the great ideas, especially the frame rack inside the roof to hold frames when you're in checking on the hive. Such a useful thing to add! Great idea to hide the handles with the friction fit barn "doors." A really clever and very attractive hive with lots of great attributes. Thanks so much for sharing! Carole from Oregon, USA.
I've just started checking out horizontal hives. Yours is really interesting. I'll have to do some more research. Thanks for the video. I'm also from PA.
Good Job! Clever way to build that frame holder inside the roof structure. Im building similar hive for 2 family but I cannot add that frame holder feature because im doing half extra floor for half frame magazines to collect the extra honey.
Now that looks awesome I love the barn look and what a awesome idea for frame holder in the roof wish I thought about this one and it was a surprise @ the end of the video with functional doors. Awesome stay safe out there. All the way from Dudley Massachusetts God Bless.
