The reference was of the young lady in the B-25 delivering an ad on camera whose hair was hit by the shockwave of the F-16. Many have said the plane was subsonic, but there was clearly a shockwave and not just a blast of air.

    Usually between mach .95-1 the air brake can cause a sonic boom, the whole aircraft itself wasnt supersonic, just the waves forming over the air brakes, as the air there is being compressed just enough to overlap sound waves and create a boom. More than likely what happened here

      That was the first sonic boom I experiences at close range and the shock wave wasn't that bad at all. It really has to do with the size of AC and the aerodynamics. I think the broken window blasts are not common and could be more Hollywood than reality.

      This was a nice satisfying crack but as others have said, the plane was not supersonic - you hear it before it passes you. I grew up at China Lake (the Navy R&D/test base in the Mojave Desert and home of the VX-9 Vampires who were also at Airventure) and if he had been truly in the mach speeds, "wasn't that bad at all" would not be part of the description.
      One guy did a low pass over the base when I was in 6th grade and it took out at least 28 windows (that plus a light fixture were how many the janitor had counted by the time he got to our room) as well as some shelves at the commissary. It probably ded a bunch of other damage as well.

So to see and hear an aircraft go supersonic up close and personal may well drive up recruitment...much the way that Top Gun did so for the Navy, back in the 80s.

    What we heard was NOT a sonic boom. Sort of. Instead, what it actually was, was a "mini" sonic boom. The F-16 is known to have a little problem associated with the rearward position of its speed brakes...........the opening of the speed brakes at high transonic speeds can actually create enough pressure differential to create a mini sonic boom, even though the aircraft isnt supersonic itself. That's what you're hearing in the video. The pilot accelerated to the point that they all do (mach .94- .97) to get the classic "shock cone" that we all like so much, but didn't let the aircraft slow down enough before engaging the air brakes. The result is the mini sonic boom.

    Great video. I think the jet noise we are hearing before the pass is coming through the announcer speakers. I believe they are seated down south by Boeing Plaza for those familiar with the area. You can hear him talking right before. Their mic is picking it up and broadcasting ahead of the aircraft. I was fortunate to be a spectator on the line further to the north and there was no noise until the double boom and associated compression. It was intense.

      The sound waves were compressed very far but the aircraft was still behind the shock wave just a little bit. You can tell because you could hear the noise of the jet just a little before it past the camera. Fully supersonic you hear absolutely nothing until it passes, and then all of the sound you would have heard normally is delivered in one intense shock.
      Even subsonic the compression of the sound creates a very intense boom, just not quite as intense as fully supersonic creates. It's still the best sound most aviation buffs will ever hear. This was mighty cool.

    So I have a question for the community. Let's say the plane has gone Mach before it gets to the observer but only for a split second enough to form a cone, and then goes sub-Mach before reaching the observer's location. Would the cone push the engine sound ahead of itself as it continues on its path so as to hear the engine first, then the crack of the boom?

    • @nate0765
      @nate0765 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I was thinking something similar. Maybe it was accelerating and hit Mach 1 as it went by. The sound you hear before the boom could’ve been generated before the jet hit Mach 1 and had enough time to reach the observer and then the sonic boom hit as it went by. I saw another video of a woman talking as this happened and there was a shockwave strong enough to move her hair. Much stronger than the pyro that they set off their.

    • @o_sch
      @o_sch 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, at the last moment before going below mach 1 your plane will still create a boom which travels at mach 1 which is your speed. Then, any moment after that you are slower than sound - meaning you will instantaneously lag behind the very last boom you made, and since you are behind it there is no way for any of your sound to get in front of it.
      Its never possible to get in front of the sonic boom since you would have to travel faster than sound and then when you do get in front, you will already be making another boom since you are faster than sound

      Transonic is 0.97-1.20 so I doubt he was supersonic 1.21 or 1.22+ . But if he was 0.95-1.00 you wouldn’t get a bang and you normally would have visible condensation. @@klk1900 thanks for detailed calculation. this is helpful to understand. just watching the video, it looks like the camera is in the front aspect. In the transonic flight shock wave will be somewhat perpendicular to the aircraft motion direction. so if the engine sound is heard before boom, that would indicate the aircraft velocity vs ground is below M=1. This could be however different if we add wind velocity to the equation. Aircraft velocity vs air could still be equal or slightly higher then M1.

    It wasn't a sonic boom. Of course many will disagree, but there was an audible low pressure sound before the aircraft flew over, which, if you know anything about supersonic travel, if you're going over mach 1.00, you can't hear the aircraft coming at all. What was most likely going on was the aircraft was going high subsonic, probably 0.99 mach, and the air was at such a low pressure that the main sound wave hit just before the aircraft flew over. If it were a sonic boom, there would be eardrums shattered, glass shattered, kids crying, and car alarms going off because of the shockwave. The chance of the aircraft going supersonic is also dimmed by the fact the FAA banned overland supersonic travel in the US in the 1970s because of windows being shattered 30+ miles away from where the boom originated from.

      @@smudent2010 Yeah - It's the real deal. The sound is actually pretty good. You can see the two pops on the sound wave on the edit system. They're 2 frames apart (or 1/15th of a second).
      I have a $700 mic on the camera and had the gain turned way down because subsonic jets flying that close to the camera always overdrive the AGC circuit. I really didn't expect the sonic boom - nobody did. But really, it was like two barrel bombs blowing a few feet in front of us. It was loud and the jet blast followed a fraction of a second later. He had his speed brakes deployed when he passed. My wife and I always put ear plugs in when the military jets take off. We both have tinnitus.

      It was a boom, but given the other context and the mildness of the boom, the jet was not supersonic. I am no expert at all in this topic, but it may be that portions of the jet experienced supersonic airspeed while the majority did not. I also saw a claim that it was a vapor shockwave thingy, no idea about that. in any case, if the jet was supersonic, the boom would have been very severe. simply the tips of the propeller of the thunderscreech being supersonic is enough to make people sick, a much larger object, such as a jet, usually damages objects, and anatomy.

    Idiots saying it wasn't a boom, yes it was a sonic boom. Chances are it was an oops moment. In the UK sonic booms are only allowed during emergencies, like scrambles, not during displays. Allowed over water but not built up areas, unless its a scramble.

      In the UK they are allowed to go super sonic during emergencies, false information fella. Only during emergencies. Maybe in the USA, but the UK they are allowed to go Super Sonic. I have heard Typhoons from 29 squadron coningsby go over my house at Super Sonic before. The FAA give them full permission to go Super Sonic in a Scramble situation. They will not slow down because of the public, if an emergency has been given and they need to intercept quickly, they are free to go super sonic. It takes a Typhoon to reach London in 10 Minutes, and they fly around 760mph, even faster, they escort threats into Stansted Airport, which is the home of terrorist or Hijacked incidents.
      Another incident in the UK several years ago was an F-15E from Lakenheath, she accidentally past super sonic and apologized as a boom was heard, it was reported because it was a non emergency peacetime exercise.
      Misinformation, During displays they are not allowed to fly super sonic, you are correct sub sonic 700mph is allowed, but nobody was in the cockpit of the F-16 to prove it wasn't Super Sonic, all im gonna say is, it was pretty close.@@silverfox1546

      Was you in the Cockpit of the F-16 at the time? Mistakes can happen. Folks, trust me when I say that this was no sonic boom. I can understand how the average person would think that this was. In my 20 years in the Marine corps, I've heard/experienced more than a few.....THIS WASN'T EVEN CLOSE! Allow me to enlighten you: An aircraft going supersonic, or traveling faster than the speed of sound is what creates a sonic boom. Sound travels at about 760 MPH (depending on air density, moisture etc). Sure, there was a sudden change in air pressure and sound due to the F-16's (which can actually travel twice the speed of sound) high speed of travel (probably pretty close to 700 MPH). Another indicator is the fact that a pilot is not allowed supersonic over land (unless it's combat or a national emergency) without special permission. For safety reasons, protocol mandates that a pilot would have to be over water at least 30 miles off the coastline to go supersonic; this mandate is in the interest of safety. If an F-16 (or any capable aircraft) were to go supersonic at an airshow (like this) with all those people, cars, buildings etc (like this) at an altitude as low as in this video, people would be injured and property would be destroyed.....it just wouldn't happen.

      Indeed. I remember a case when two readiness F16s were scrambled in Greece a couple years back to intercept an airliner who entered airspace and failed to respond to any hailing by the control tower. The sonic booms caused such a fuss that people were calling the police about two loud explosions in an area almost 50 kilometers in diameter.
      And i also heard such a boom some 5 years back while on the beach. I can know for sure if it was a supersonic aircraft or a meteorite, but a sudden bang, muffled a bit by distance but solid sound nonetheless, shook everyone on the beach. My guess was that someone went supersonic during exercise, somewhere in the distance inside the mediterranean.
      Yeah, a sonic boom that close would be havoc

      If you can hear the sound of the jet before you hear the "boom", like you definitely can in this video, the jet was NOT supersonic.
      The whole definition of "supersonic" means the jet would be ahead of all of its noise and the VERY FIRST thing you'd hear is the boom. All of the jet's sound is behind that shock wave. It's an extremely simple concept.
