The glorious thing about all the Team Star tracks is they're made by a composer who did only really did tiny little sound effects for random games, named Teruo Taniguchi
it can be easy to forget that people who work on sound design are often talented composers too. atleast it feels like that. like, some of my favourite music in elden ring was done by a guy who only did sound design in previous fromsoft games.
@@Pascll i have to ask, which composer are you referring to? i just played through elden ring (my first foray into souls!) and i’m loving the vibes of the OST
Saying that the Pokemon fanbase is "huge" is sort of an understatement, seeing as it is the most profitable media franchise of all time. 😅 Scarlet and Violet are the latest mainline Pokemon games on the Switch from late last year, and started off the 9th generation of Pokemon. They might not be the most pretty or well running Pokemon games, but they are the most fun I've had with the games since Black 2/White 2 from 2012.
I feel like most people would agree the function isn’t great but the story is very compelling by Pokemon standards at least and open world was a nice change
I've been wanting you to react to this one for a while now. The coolest part is that this theme exists within the game canonically. A character named Giacomo wrote it as the theme song for himself and his fellow Team Star bosses. A group of outcasts who came together and started their own "team rocket" consisting of all the delinquents at their school.
Answering the question about version differences; Yes, some Pokemon can still only be caught in certain versions, but more than that starting as early as Generation 2 (Gold/Silver/Crystal), sometimes certain plot elements or locations are slightly tweaked based on which game you have. Without adding too many spoilers in the comment section, in the case of these two games, Scarlet has a focus on the 'past' and Violet has a focus on the 'future' which affects an end-game area and the Pokemon that are affected there.
This is a song that exists in universe. A character in the game canonically wrote this piece and played it as he and his army of bullying victims stormed their school ready to completely and utterly stomp their bullies. As with all sorts of plans made by teenagers, things did not turn out like a bunch of heroes taking on a group of unifed villians. The bullies, when they saw an army, did not stand and fight. They fled the school permanently, completely squelching the attempt at triumphant closure. The teachers who were either blind or complicit in the bullying, all resigned after the bullies parents pulled them from the school. All records of the incident were erased by the Vice Principal trying to save face. And instead of being the conquering heroes rolling up in tanks with an army, ready to do head to head pokemon battles over who ruled the school, Team Star became the villains in the record. They were viewed as the bullies, not the victims, by both incoming students and the new teaching staff, who had no idea what happened and no way of reaching out to the Team. The fallout from the takeover was that the unidentified head of the group turned themselves over, took all blame for inciting a revolution, and left the country for nearly 2 years. And Team Star, out of pure loyalty, refused to return to the school until their leader was publically vindicated. From their point of view, Team Star was the victims wh9 finally lashed out collectively, and were painted as the villians.
@@BJGvideos And what's even worse? The former head of Naranja/Uva Academy knew Team Star was the victim all along. In fact, it was he who sent their boss back to their home of origin for the year and a half of "overseas studying" (that was the excuse used. In reality, it was purely just to take some time away from school to recover from the bullying). But yeah, because of the one staff member who didn't want to take the blame for allowing this to happen and purged all records of the incident, it didn't matter that the former head fired him personally. By that point, he was wrought with guilt over it happening that he and all the former staff all resigned. So because of them leaving, and the records purged, that's why nobody on the current staff knew the truth. So this story overall is just pure tragedy. And why this also gives major credit to Clavell for digging into this personally and learning the truth with his own eyes.
@@BJGvideos ...I'm literally in the middle of a Scarlet challenge run right now. I just did the fairy star base. He literally explains that he did NOT punish Team Star for what they did, and knew they were the victims, and why he sent the boss back home. It was the one staff member that decided to screw EVERYTHING up, and thus led to him resigning due to all this happening. Harrington knew the truth. He just didn't stop his one staff from destroying all of the evidence, and then instead of staying on as head and explaining "No, Team Star were actually the victims. There was no actual altercation that took place.", he let his guilt control him into stepping down, and thus left the school a blank slate, thereby making it able to set it up as Team Star being the bullies. So he had good intentions with Team Star. He just let guilt intervene at the worst time and made the wrong decision in stepping down. So I wouldn't label him as an evil villain, but more of a "character who wanted to do the right thing, but made the wrong decision that ended up doing the exact opposite." Really, SV as a whole doesn't have a "proper villain", but rather a bunch of characters who just made poor decisions that ended up affecting future events. It mainly showed how we, as human beings, are flawed creatures, and while we have good intentions, we can make wrong decisions that ultimately do more harm than good, even if that wasn't our intent in the first place.
@@vgmaster02 But he did nothing to clear their name. He withdrew with no public statement despite having the power to change things. No proper villains? Sada and Turo were at least on Archie and Maxie levels since their plans would have destroyed the Paldean ecosystem. Only more so since they were well aware that this would happen and went ahead with it anyway .
Hey Jesse, I don't think you realised but the solo at 3:30 and the solo at 6:20 are actually completely different, Most uploads of this song completely miss this, looping the first half instead of the full thing. (One upload even cuts the second solo in half!)
Who uploaded that version of the song? Cause I've been looking for that version that doesn't go over the entire song twice and doesn't last 10 minutes as a result
what's wild to me is that this is coming before the Team Star GRUNT theme, and that one goes... UNBELIEVABLY hard Like, unjustifiably so Can't wait for that one
I am way late to this, but Im pretty sure the song in this case sounds abit rougher for narrative reasons - the music used by Team Star is actually composed by its members in the universe, so this is basically a custom, in house composition that they play while fighting you. Its not as polished cause its not technically professional work
for some added context to the three Team Star battle themes; Per the in game lore, one of the Team Star Bosses actually wrote all three songs. For at least the Boss and Leader theme, it is *implied* that the song that plays during the battle, is *actually* playing in the background during the fight, rather than just something we only hear as a viewer from beyond the fourth wall.
Scarlet and violet genuinely had an amazing OST and I think it's now my second favorite pokemon score right behind generation 5's OST. A LOT of really good tracks and the "final boss" track is probably my favorite track in the pokemon franchise. Odds are someone probably requested it so that'll be great when that eventually pops up.
The music in Scarlet and Violet was truly god tier music. It took the idea of big event music from Sword and Shield and pushed it even further. But it really personalized it and you really can feel the characters in the songs that have differences. The music was leaked along with the game before its release day and the music alone is why i bought the game, it blew me away. My obvious stand outs i hope are on your back list are Penny's Battle Theme (the Goddest of God Tiers), Clavell's battle theme, AI Prof Battle theme, Arven's Battle theme, Area Zero and more.
Oddly enough I think the regular Team Star battle theme you hear when fighting their grunts is even more of a banger than this one. Also, fun fact: this song is diegetic! Team Star's bosses show up with rockin' sound systems and blast this while you're fighting them.
I grew up with Gen 5 and my first games were Black and Black 2. I've played one of every version since in each generation including Legends Arceus. . . . Except for Scarlet and Violet, the first time I've played both and this battle theme is one of the biggest reasons why. It took the spot of my All-time favorite battle theme in Pokémon beating out my previous favorite the Sinnoh Battle Frontier Brain Theme from Platinum. For the record, when they name the games after colors again, you KNOW they mean serious business and it's another reboot of the franchise. If you told me back when I was 11 and started Pokémon 12 years ago that this is the theme that plays when you battle 5 Highschool Dropout delinquents who were bullied and thus formed a so called evil team just so they could belong somewhere and give other students who were also outcasts and victims of bullying a place to belong and be themselves gor comeradery they all cosplay as their Type Specialties and one of them is a boy who's a Fairy Type Specialist and dresses like a dapper AF modern day Fairy Tale Mage and likes pretty, cute, and beautiful things and has a serious savage side and smart mouth and also is the teams go to for getting their hands dirty and CREATED the boss fight exclusive Pokémon vehicles He was picked on for being a "girly boy" and his more fortunate upbringing even though he never cared about his family's wealth and only ever wanted to prove to himself and others that he can accomplish something to be proud if on his own without people thinking he's just an entitled kid who doesn't know anything and need the crutch of his economic status when he just wants to be normal He weilds a POKÉBALL CANE, FINALLY, THE ONE SINGLE TIME A PRETTY OR MORE FEMININE MALE TRAINER THROW HIS POKÉBALL WITH A CANE, WHAT I'VE LITERALLY HAD AS MY OWN SIGNITURE OC POKÉMON TRAINER DO FOREVER AND you fight their Pokémon along with an Engine Pokémon fused into a sentient Battle Bus Hot Rod Hover Car with their own signature Torque Moves with devastatingly busted effects I would say that you just read the deepest most hidden hopes and desires for a Pokémon game that would never happen and for you to stop getting my hopes up. And here we are. Wait, wrong franchise.😅
Pokemon Scarlet/Violet are the latest games. The music is generally amazing. Yes the 2 version thing is still going, variants in pokemon availability and the box art legendary some times gym leaders. Team Star is the "villian" team for these games
Team Rocket = Mafia Team Aqua/Magma = ecoterrorists Team Galactic = bizarre criminal gang dressed like spacemen Team Plasma = criminal gang masquerading as PETA with a medieval aesthetic that then drops the facade and goes with black ops gear Team Flare = fashion obsessed weirdoes Team Skull = juvenile delinquents Team Yell = rowdy soccer fans Team Star = bunch of disenfranchised students
@@FF-tp7qs Excellent list but some slight additions/corrections: Team Galactic = Doomsday Cult Team Plasma = Cult masquerading as PETA with a medieval aesthetic that then drop the facade and go full terrorist with black ops gear Team Flare = French, beauty obsessed Nazis who masquerade as fashion obsessed weirdeos, and charge extreme amounts of money for entry into their little gang so the icky poor people they don't like can't get in.
@@FF-tp7qs neo plasma isn't a black ops aesthetic but i a pirate aesthetic. It's because plasma's outfits are based on the knights templar (specifically the criminal ones the church enlisted to boost their numbers). After the crusades failed & those convict-turned-knights couldn't find work because they're thieves & murderers, many of them moved on to piracy.
Pokemon music has a history of going hard with new music techniques and experimentation in recent generations. You know a track is good when you're sitting around just taking it in instead of wondering what move to make next 😂
9:21 Yes, two separate versions are still a thing, and the music is still the same in both versions, no exclusive music tracks, Just exclusive pokemon such as the box art legendaries.
this tune was used for one of the story battles during the Pokemon Twitch Cup 3, where player Illojuan suffered a team wipe at the hands of an unusually OP Chatot. the melody that starts at 3:00 almost perfectly portrays that moment, as it happened: he started off winning, confident, then the Chatot comes out and overpowers him, he stumbles, realizes he's doomed, pulls himself together although a bit disorganized, charges the enemy and goes down fighting. I don't think the organizers ever imagined what could come out of choosing this particular tune. everyone else in the cup pretty much glided through that battle unnoticed.... for Juan, it was the fight of a lifetime. ....and it wasn't even half way through the game!
Just so you know, this track is called Team Star Boss Battle, to differentiate it from the Team Star Grunt Battle theme, which I see is also in your request list. Edit: This comment was made when the video title was Team Star Battle.
Yeah, this theme just hit me like a freight train the first time I heard it in-game. Pokemon's always experimented with different genres, but they seldom ever go full-on insane with the electric guitar like they do here. And just when you think the theme's done, they just pick up more electric guitars and just keep on GOING AND GOING. Like, this is one of the longest and most complex battle themes in the series I've heard, to the point that there is a different second half in the second loop (not sure if you noticed, since you were focusing on the rhythm guitar, but there is a wicked distorted guitar solo there). All of the high-quality uploads of this theme don't have this variation (they only repeat the first loop), so I had to link a video that was gamerip quality but had the full theme. But I'm glad that didn't affect your enjoyment too much. This has quickly shot up to be one of my most favorite battle themes in the series, and it got me looking up who Teruo Taniguchi is (he seemed to only have a few obscure games and some sound work in Pokemon Black 2/White 2 under his belt, so if he's only getting attention now, then hey, I'm looking forward to what else he's got). Taniguchi's responsible for pretty much all of the Team Star music, and every single one of them are incredible. You're dead-on with your guesses about Team Star, by the way. They're a bunch of teen delinquents who skip school and cause trouble, but they're not villains in the least and their story is actually pretty touching. Not to mention, their bosses go around in Pokemon-powered cars, and you actually send out your Pokemon to fight _against the car._ It's just as crazy and badass as it sounds. Hell, this theme? In-universe, it was composed by one of the Team Star bosses, so it is actually narrative canon that you're beating down the bosses while this theme is blasting out of the car's speakers. Yeah... despite not really being villains, Team Star is actually one of the coolest "villain" teams the series has. It helps that their fights are pretty challenging compared to other fights. I'm really looking forward to you hearing some of the other Team Star themes (and certain... endgame themes as well). Pokemon as a franchise has become pretty... polarizing in recent years. The developers are frequently accused of playing too safe and not making great technological and graphical strides compared to series like The Legend of Zelda. The games are also frequently thought of as too easy or too casual and kiddy. Not that I don't agree with some of these criticisms, but I still really enjoy the games because I enjoy the world and stories that Pokemon has built up over the years. The world and Pokemon species also mirror the real world in surprising ways, and I always learn a lot of things when I look up what the Pokemon or the in-game regions and cities are based on. Plus, you know... the soundtracks are always bangers.
It's funny that the games have such a kiddie reputation since the stories have gotten more complex and emotional. Like, SM was about kids fleeing their abusive mother. SV is about a search for closure and about dealing with the aftermath of corruption (in separate plots).
@@kevinnguyen4711 They're so good! But then the fanbase seems to ignore all that. They go "SM has a long tutorial so it's for babies" and "SV has glitches so the whole game is garbage" and they're really throwing the baby out with the bathwater here
@@BJGvideos Like, it's fine to have issues with long tutorials and linearity and the like, but to me, the emotional catharsis I got from Sun/Moon's ending really made up for all that. That, and the region still having a great aesthetic and worldbuilding and lots of little things like the side events and the bosses.
@@kevinnguyen4711 Totally. And with SV, I think I have a higher tolerance for glitches. My favorite game ever has a glitch that's so utterly catastrophic that it can make the cartridge itself unplayable forever. And yet that game, Final Fantasy 6, is considered a masterpiece to this day.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but when it comes to version differences in soundtracks, I'm pretty sure the only differences have been: - In Ruby and Sapphire, where the version dictates which of two organizations (Team Magma and Team Aqua) is playing the "main baddie", and each team has their own encounter theme (played directly before fighting one of the members, but also as a BGM in certain areas while it's occupied by members of the team), while in Emerald, a third version, the two organizations kinda take turns appearing in different locations and causing trouble, so you get to hear both themes. The actual battle themes are same for both teams. - In Black and White and the sequels, there's a couple locations that are actually thematically complete opposites from one another between the versions, and the BGM matches that.
I think Scarlet/Violet's music is one of the hardest out of the entire series. Just a lot of amazing tracks, especially the final bosses of major questlines. Can't wait for you to reach those.
So, about the music in Pokémon, yes, they almost never fail. The reason because I said "almost" is that they are not afraid to use many different genres in each generation which makes it inevitable (at least for me) that some themes would stand out more than others, like this one, I personally think it's too much for me. And as I'm sure someone has already told you, they also give prominence to different instruments, to give an example, in the third generation the trumpets are the main dish, in the fourth the piano makes the game feel more elegant, the fifth has a more electronic style to it so to speak, etc
Sadly also the ugliest and most bug-ridden Pokémon games yet! =/ Didn't think they'd be able to make a game that's uglier than Legends Arceus, but here we are! =P At least the "Sonic rule" of the past applies to Pokémon as well: No matter how bad the games are, the composers are doing an incredible job! =)
@@catscanhavelittleasalami To me it's _easily_ one of the most disgusting looking Switch games. It's rare to find someone who likes the look of it. (beyond Jubilife Village, which is halfway decent looking)
My favorite track from this game is the Area Zero Battle Theme, its just so delightfully funky! If you do that one, I recommend doing the Area Zero Theme first, with the battle theme in the same video, cuz theyre basically the same track, the battle theme is just a pumped up version of it.
Some of the music in Scarlet & Violet goes _unnecessarily_ hard and I love it so much. The Tera Raid Battle music is worth checking out sometime too, Toby Fox is responsible for that one.
For story context for the song’s vibe, Team Star are a gang of school hooligans of outcasts and eccentric cliches like computer kids, edgy kids with home designed cloaks, sport jocks, and rich prep kids that have come together against the school mandates and for freedom of expression, so the songs are naturally very “defiant” and “you can’t tell me what to do” kinda angst rock vibes. All of their banding together and what eventually becomes straight up coercion of random students to join their team and making blockades leads to them just becoming as bad as their bullies, with the founder leaving their Team Boss friends and wanting to dismantle the group entirely by enlisting the protagonist to take them down a notch. It’s definitely the least evil or malicious Team of the series, even compared to Sun & Moon’s Team Skull who were just hoodlums who only really caused property damage unlike the literal terrorists of other games, so the vibes of Star’s battle themes are very much more lighter and hyper. *(Also the founder might have accidentally maybe embezzled the equivalent of thousands of dollars worth of hacked digital school currency when paying you for your victories she didn’t think it was that bad whoops)*
Yep, Pokemon has been using the two-versions system since the Red and Blue days. The soundtracks for each version pairs are always the same. The only exception I believe being the Pokemon Black and White games and their sequels-- I think each game has 2 tracks that are exclusive to that version. Pokemon and Sonic really do always seem to deliver in the music department. This song was highly enjoyable to hear for the first time in game. It kind of caught me off guard in the best way possible haha.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet are the latest games, they came out last year in November. They're the first fully open world games in the series and have you follow multiple storylines that once all completed collide into a crazy finale. Storywise it's about enrolling into a gigantic school and being given an assignment to basically go out into the world and find a "treasure", which is purposefully vague. This theme plays for these boss fights against the leaders of this group of rebellious students called Team Star. One of the 3 storylines revolves around that group and figuring out why they're rebelling exactly. It's not the best open world ever made by a longshot but it's fun to see them take a crack at it and I think it's a design that fits the series well, and a lot of ppl myself included really fell in love with it for the story. It's nothing that'll completely blow your socks off (except for the end which is pretty crazy) but it's got a cast of really good characters.
The "Which Pokemon games are good and which have good soundtracks" is quite a heated debate. A decade ago, people hated Pokemon Black and White, but now it's considered a fan favourite. I don't really think there are many bad soundtracks in Pokemon games though, just one's that aren't as good, where as Sonic and MegaMan have absolute bangers on even the worst games.
I'd say yes - the OST of the main series is consistently amazing. Spin-offs - it depends. I consider Pokemon Mystery Dungeon spin-offs to also have stellar OSTs. Explorers of Sky and Blue Rescue Team are my favourites. I am especially in love with Gou Ichinose's work. He has a tendency to use a lot of funky slap bass and his soundtracks are pretty chaotic in a good way. If something sounds like a funky all-over-the-place but great bass - that's most likely his doing. I love this dude's music, seriously.
I had forgotten how good the Team Star Boss theme was. It's really good. I was always so focused on the Revavroom destroying my team that I never noticed the music.
11:48 yes absolutely. I didnt care for the latest two generations, but I will always take a look at their OST bc damn its always filled with good stuff.
Can't remember the term but this song is supposed to actually playing in universe during the battle with the Team Star bosses and is even for the lore composed by one of the bosses of Team Star. Edit: As for the naming scheme, there's been a few instances where they haven't used colors. X/Y, Sun/Moon, and then the previous gen Sword/Shield. But as has already been mentioned, the difference really comes down to version exclusive Pokemon and then since Gold/Silver, each game has their own exclusive legendary, which sometimes changes the plot a bit. To use Scarlet and Violet here, the plot difference has to do with past and future, and they for whatever reason changed the name of the school in the region. But other than those slight differences, the games are for the most part the same story.
Team Star is the villainous team of Scarlet/Violet, who are more-or-less delinquents who've been forced out of/left the pokemon trainer school that the player is in. Their leaders are all skilled trainers with different specialties and niches outside of battle that contribute to the crew as a whole; The Dark Type Leader is also a DJ and cannonically made this music. The Fire Type Leader is a consigliere for the team at large. The Poison Type Leader is a seamster and made everyone in the team's outfits. The Fairy Type Leader is an expert engineer and figured out how to modify/add on to pokemon to create unique pokemon for each leader that acts as their "war chariot" of sorts. The Fighting Type Leader is a personally skilled wrestler and also trained the team as a whole. The True Leader (who has their own *really* good battle track) is a skilled hacker capable of breaking into professional system security and bankrolling at least *some* of what goes on with funds they stole from the Pokemon League.
Yes they are still doing exclusive Pokemon but it's with the newest addition call "paradox Pokemon" Pokemon from the past or future respectively are evading the present.
the line of two different games in the same generation has continued for a long, long time. there's black and white, scarlet and violet, x and y, and so forth. they vary in differences when it comes to specific pokemon that can only be caught in that edition of the game and some games change the gym leaders that you fight !
The Scarlet and Violet OST was composed, in part, by Toby Fox! You know, Undertale and Deltarune's Toby Fox! Here's hoping to see more of this OST in your channel. XD (Teruo Taniguchi did an incredible job with this one though, really suits Team Star.) Thanks for the video, as usual!
fun fact! this theme canonically exist in-universe. team star is some sort of cult formed by a band of rogue students, each one of the band members was in charge of each aspect of team star(aesthetic, costumes) so one of them is the composer for the team's music. edit: abount the quality of the games, that is in fact one of the most divisive questions you can make to any pokemon fan. gen 8 games, sword and shield, are considered to be one of the worst games if not the lowest point in the franchise, but there's still fans of those games due to the good parts (like the music or the character designs) and this last one, scarlet and violet, is one of the most divisive entries. because at a technical level, the games are embarrasing to look at, there was just no polish at all and some animations are atrocious. BUT, at a design and creative level, I seen a lot of people fall absolutely in love with it (me included), and put it out there as one of the best pokemon games so yeah basically wether which pokemon games are good or not that's a topic that will never cease on the fandom ever.
Maybe it sounds like that because the music sounds in universe too, and it's suppossed to sound from a big car with big speakers? This song made each match feel so good, despite most of them being easy, except for the fighting type one, some themes in this game go hard, like Area Zero, hope someone commissions that one lol.
You’re correct in assuming the games have the same soundtrack and the different versions are mostly for version-exclusive Pokémon, but since Gold and Silver they do try and make the versions somewhat different plot-wise with the legendary Pokémon (though it’s mostly just “this Pokémon represents x and we need to use that power”) In regards to the music being consistently good, I’d say it’s accurate most of the time (the only soundtrack that was mediocre belonged to the worst mainline game in the series, but even still it had some great bangers in it) As for Team Star, they consist of bullying victims who overtime grew into delinquents that intimidate and threaten fellow students into joining their gang
@@BJGvideos that’s more of a thing of the games not really showing us more of their antics with other students rather than Penny being the only in-world example
@@BJGvideos Ultra really showed the beginning of the Pokemon Co.'s greed starting to leak over into the mainline games, since Black and White 2 were amazing second versions and then Ultra came and 1.Wasn't a sequel 2. Changed barely anything besides the endgame bosses and the addition of the Rainbow Rocket mission which should just have been Sun and Moon DLC
It's been a long time since I've really liked a main series Pokemon ost. This has been one of the best since generation 5 imo. I've heard this song before and it's a banger, the song is hyper and fun with the edge the team needs since the Team Star consists of bullied kids. The riffs are super fun and have some good intensity (which every battle theme in Pokemon needs imo). The synth section at 3:00 sounds like an encouragement, the odd shouts make me think of a bunch of team members watching this happen. The guitar melodies are awesome, just rocking out like crazy. This is a super fun song and I very much like it. There are some sub-par Pokemon games although the music is pretty consistently good, recently Pokemon games have been suffering from being rushed before they are ready and the community is pretty vocal about it.
Does anyone else think the beginning of this song sounds like the beginning of “The Remembering” by Yes? The riff was also famously used in the opening for the NES game Solstice.
Yes, the dual game thing is still a thing and never stopped. Scarlet and Violet are the latest releases-came out last November. The story and music is the same though there are some details within the story that differ. The music plays during particular battles in which the opponent is standing on a giant ass chonky car--just to add that bit of context :D.
This music exists in the game itself, for the characters. One of the Star bosses, Giacomo, wrote it and they all blast it during their matches. It's implied that he also wrote the theme for their big boss despite not having met the boss in person yet. I love how 1990s Capcom this piece sounds. It's like you expect to hear it in a Mega Man fan game. Everyone wants you to do the final boss music but it uses leitmotifs from other places in the game so you'd probably have to listen to at least...three or four other pieces to prep for it. Also the title alone will spoil a big twist. I greatly enjoyed SV and while it's glitchy, I don't see that as the dealbreaker a lot of others do. I found it enjoyable, especially the characters and story, and the ending made me cry (yes I can prove it I recorded my playthrough). It hit me so hard that I couldn't touch the postgame for months. And interesting fact, the game got "best scenario" (essentially story) at Famitsu's awards, and one of the characters, Arven, got best character. And if you play the game it's going to take a bit to understand why because when you first meet Arven he's a *jerk*, but oh god. Oh god. His story is intense. Another person who composed music for this game is Toby Fox, of Undertale fame! I think he even did that vaunted final boss music. Anyway Team Star is set up as the villain team but as you unfold their story, you realize they're anything but. They started off as bullied kids under a school administration that did nothing, so they hatched a plan to scare the bullies, but it backfired and they got framed as bullies instead, and harassed out of school, with their leader even having to leave the country. The administration ended up resigning but the damage was done, and nobody among them bothered to try and clear Star's name (one of the administrators even destroyed evidence). So instead of an evil team, you get a bunch of depressed teenagers hanging out in campgrounds instead of going to class. It's a good thing the new headmaster is so much more responsible than the prior one. (This isn't to say that the game doesn't have a region-threatening villain like they usually have...but oh god that's part of the gutpunch ending)
I have a long comment about SV themselves under the "read more" so this isn't just a reaction :P 0:33/12:30 Pokemon is the number-one media franchise in the entire world, larger than Mario, Star Wars, or any other, so its staying power has been incredible. 4:34 It's funny that you said "oh there's more, I thought it was over" cuz it was over, that was the loop point xD 7:50-9:20 Yes they've always been doing this with Pokemon games, but it's primarily about trading with your friends. Scarlet and Violet did take it a step further by changing more things like which academy you're attending, which professor shows up along your journey, etc. but they are still essentially the same game, and yeah the music remains the same. 13:30 It's funny you say Togepi because Togepi was Gen II, not Gen I xD 11:30-12:00 Yeah Pokemon music tends to be really good, and every game has plenty of fans, I don't think there was ever a time where people all agreed that the games were objectively terrible... until... Scarlet and Violet are the newest and current Pokemon games. SV are currently the only entries in Generation IX. In my opinion, SV are simultaneously the best Pokemon games ever made and the worst Pokemon games ever made, and I'll explain. "Best" is because of the incredible story and characters, fully open-world gameplay, stellar music composition (the Team Star battle is one of my favorite pieces of gaming music from last year), and adorable Pokemon designs some of which are my new favorites. I genuinely love Scarlet and Violet, I think this is the huge leap forward that Pokemon needed, and I LOVE THE CHARACTERS SO MUCH their writing is top-notch and I want so much more. I pre-ordered the DLC the day it was available for pre-order because I know I'm getting it no matter what, I love this game (I personally have Scarlet). "Worst" is because of the multitude of technical problems with the games; no Pokemon game has ever released with as many bugs and glitches as SV, and most of them have not been fixed yet. The prevailing theory is that the game's developers, Game Freak, were rushed and crunched by The Pokemon Company International so SV would release on time for things like the trading card game, the new anime seasons, new plushes and other physical products, and more. As a consequence, these games are incredibly unstable with lots of crashes, Pokemon spawning inside walls, the camera going underneath the terrain, and serious stutter, especially in multiplayer. I'm losing faith as the months go on for more patches to the game's performance... hopefully the DLC will be more stable.
@@JessesAuditorium To be fair, yes, Togepi was one of the first generation 2 pokemon that showed up in the anime, around a year before Gold and Silver were released. It wasn't the only shoehorn, but it was definitely one of the earliest. It debuted so early that it was listed as Pokemon #152 on the Mewtwo Strikes Back (the first movie) DVD, despite its actual game pokedex number of #175. There was a time when little me growing up thought Togepi was gen 1 as well, and was very confused when I could never find it in Pokemon Red, lol. I got Silver before too long though, so I eventually figured that out. The first Gen 2 pokemon shown in the anime was actually in the very first episode though; the golden bird Pokemon that Ash sees as he sets out on his journey is Ho-Oh, once of the main legendaries of Gold/Silver/Crystal. The first episode aired a full two years before Gold and Silver was even announced in Japan, so it's a pretty common but cool piece of Pokemon trivia
@@JessesAuditorium Movie 1 also has Donphan, another generation 2 Pokémon. That was its first appearance! It's the elephant the pirate-looking trainer has at the beginning.
To answer your two-color-question, errr. yes and no? Yes, you're spot on with there being version-exclusive Pokemon, with that being the only notable difference for most of them, and the story, OST, etc. is the same between in most cases. No, it hasn't always been colors - so far they've used letters (X and Y), as well as concepts (Sun/Moon, as well as Sword/Shield which might ring a bell). There's two notable exceptions, and I'll also put a fact at the end about this specific song. Also, yes, this is the newest game, released in November 2022. There's always been a two-game split on release, Red/Green for Japan & Red/Blue for the rest of the world, Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire, so on and so fourth up to Scarlet/Violet. The first four generations getting a sort of updated release version - Yellow, Crystal, Emerald and Platinum. As for the small differences in versions I can recall beyond version exclusive Pokémon, Ruby and Sapphire had an evil team that was dependent on your game version, and Black and White (and their sequel) added two entire sections of the game that developed differently from the other. This song was, in the story of Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, made by a former-student president and current "wannabe DJ". He's one of the "Bosses" of Team Star, a bunch of bullied students who are trying to stick it to their university. He also made the Team Star Grunt theme, as well as Cassiopeia's theme. If you get around to listening to those, try to keep this song in mind! Lastly, to answer your question about the games and their music, I think that Pokemon has always been on the mark, with the exception of the Sun and Moon, which I can't make a proper judgement on since I never completed it. It just never grabbed my interest as much as the rest. However, I think the music has been absolutely fantastic in ~95% of cases. The other 5% aren't bad - they're quite good, but are marred by things like the battle being short or easy.
Personally, my favorite track from S/V is the South Province wild battle theme. To answer your question, the two versions still pretty much work exactly as you described, basically just the same game with different Pokémon. Scarlet and Violet also have different professors, but that’s pretty much it.
Fun fact about this song: It's Cannon, As in this song is Actually playing through loud speakers in the game Gen 9 (Scarlet, Violet, And Legends Arceus) Has the best soundtrack since Gen 5
Something to note that I hadn't really seen anyone else mention is that Toby Fox had a hand in a lot of Scarlet and Violet's soundtrack, either as the primary or some sort of co-producer. He's very well known for his games Undertale and Deltarune that he also did the soundtrack for, and after making a single song for the Battle Tower in Pokemon Sword and Shield it seems that they liked it enough to make him a primary contributor to the Scarlet and Violet soundtrack. I'm not sure how much Toby you've heard already, but you can notice his influence and signature sound in a lot of different songs and you can very clearly tell in the Area Zero and Tera Raid related themes that Toby has dipped his hand into it. The game honestly had such a large variety of styles in its tracks but it's all so good.
Yep, Pokemon music is always good, even when the game is lackluster -- as ling as you stay within the main series that is. There are a few spin offs with unimpressive soundtracks, but there are also a lot of spin off.
The casual fan will say the franchise sucks and there’s no effort put into the production of any game. Even tho the more advanced games become, Pokémon seems to always be behind in that department. But die hard fans will gladly buy every game and love it dispute the flaws. and as a die hard fan I’ll be the first to say that there is some truth to that. But 1 thing everyone can agree on is the OSTs as a whole seem to get better and better with every game
Scarlet and Violet's soundtrack has a couple bangers. This and Cassiopeia hit pretty hard, but nothing beats Bede's theme from Sword and Shield for me from the Switch games. As for version differences, it's almost exactly the same as back in the old days. Version exclusive pokemon and Legendaries. Sword and Shield had a change in gym leaders/types but otherwise was the same thing. The soundtrack though is definitely the same htough.
Scarlet and Violet are the newest mainline games that unfortunately released very glitchy on Nintendo Switch(first since GB/DS era). It still had decent story and enough interesting things I'd consider it a okay game.
Being out of chord is kinda in line with the Team Star characters because they are a group of school outcasts who appreciated each other's talents and built on them to protect themselves from the academy's bullying problem.
Pokemon as I know, went from colours to jewels, back to colours then the Sun and Moon then Sword and Shield and right back into colours. Version exclusive pokemon are still going strong.
Also the version exclusive stuff is still very much alive though there are a bit more differences between Scarlet/Violet in terms of the actual Pokemon. The only story difference is one NPC changes based on version, story, music, everything else is the same, just Scarlet has prehistoric versions of Pokemon while Violet has some futuristic versions.
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet had many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many problems, but the music is not one of them. That is but one of this game's stellar tracks, and I do believe that song is actually NOT looped in the video, but I can be wrong on that. The guitar goes so much harder in the second half of the song than the first half's. At least it sounds that way to me.
Scarlet & Violet Versions are Generation 9 of the mainline Pokemon games. The latest in the series at this moment of writing for Nintendo Switch. Yes they still do version exclusive pokemon. The music is the same. The story is usually the same outside version exclusive context, but its essentially the same . Team Star are a group of deliquent students who formed a rebellous group for spoiler related reasons. You NEED to react to the full Team Star Grunt Battle theme. Its very underated.
Although it's not an official Pokemon game I highly suggest the song "nuclear plant zeta" from Pokemon uranium. It's a fan game with amazing music by Emdache
Always felt this one seemed like it should have been in a Sonic game with the crazy pacing. Also feel like the music quality was one of the few things that wasn't broken in the games lol.
1:56 When does this song play? It plays after you open the gate! (There's a minigame between entering the gate and the actual battle but that's not important)
People can say what they want about Scarlet/Violet. Are they a buggy, low framerate mess? Yes. Are they some of the most fun and most daring Pokemon has been in years? Also yes. Trust me, everything to do with Area Zero makes me wish there was a full game with just that vibe because wow does the game end stronger than almost any other main generation Pokemon title.
@@hideharu-xiii8852 I feel like Area Zero is a continuation of Arven's story, at least the storyline when you go in there. Sure you can and almost certainly will go in there later, but the story you follow is the story of his messed up family.
The track is what it says, the Team Star Boss Battle theme. They are a Team, like Team Rocket, they are the bad guys on the game. Evil Teams is one of the things that also always carried through all Pokemon Games, every game has one, some straight up to the core evil and some super goofy evil or good but twist bad or whatever. Team Rocket as the first nothing needs to be explained here, Team Aqua and Magma next, then we got Team Galactic, Team Plasma as fifth, Team Flare, Team Skull, Team Yell and then we are now at Team Star. Many of them fit into the more evil archetype but the last three where all a bit more goofy and light hearted. Team Skull is such a random bunch all the time. Like the are played as a joke in the game but are pretty much all like Jessie and James, always thumbling everything they try, like in one scene they for real try to steal a bus stop so they can mess up peoples days if the bus just keeps driving🤣 and one grunt even straight up says he doesn‘t want to fight you because he knows he will just lose… actually that‘s the smartest grunt ever🤣.
Except Star subverts that by not being evil at all. Like, even Yell was at least a public nuisance and was intentionally obnoxious to achieve their goal. Star kept to themselves and never bothered anybody.
@@BJGvideosyes but I didn‘t want to explain that cause he is a person who has no idea about and developments in Pokemon beyond the first games. So I thought a ‚good‘ evil Team might be a bit strange to explain🤣.
He really has to react to the AI Sada and Turo battle theme, that one is THE BEST pokemon track of all times besides zinnias theme. And it is composed by the man Toby Fox himself, so good
Jesse, is your (right?) eye alright? It's so red on the outside. Maybe it was a short-time thing? Hope you're doing well! =) And since I'm at that part of the video right now: To someone who started playing the games in the early 2000s, the mainline Pokémon games have been getting worse and worse with every 3D entry. But yes, the soundtracks are usually awesome, no matter the game's quality. The spin-off games are usually of high quality, though, both as games and with their OSTs! =D
My eye is fine 👍

The glorious thing about all the Team Star tracks is they're made by a composer who did only really did tiny little sound effects for random games, named Teruo Taniguchi
He also worked on Tetris 99 in a larger capacity
WHATTT XD THAT IS SO COOL I didn't know that! Thanks for the info!
it can be easy to forget that people who work on sound design are often talented composers too. atleast it feels like that.
like, some of my favourite music in elden ring was done by a guy who only did sound design in previous fromsoft games.
Minako Adachi starts like that too
@@Pascll i have to ask, which composer are you referring to? i just played through elden ring (my first foray into souls!) and i’m loving the vibes of the OST
Saying that the Pokemon fanbase is "huge" is sort of an understatement, seeing as it is the most profitable media franchise of all time. 😅
Scarlet and Violet are the latest mainline Pokemon games on the Switch from late last year, and started off the 9th generation of Pokemon.
And adding on, you can see him mixing it in his battle.
@@TSLsmokeyOHH WHAT XD That's so cool, I didn't know that!
I'm always blown away by Pokémons music, but also the character design. I can't explain, but Pokémon always makes aesthetically pleasing people.
I honestly think that’s why I keep coming back. Pokémon is just... Comfortable, no matter how "bad" they make a game.
Oh goodness not just their point of view. That's legit just what happened. They got victim blamed and lied about.
@@vgmaster02 Harrington and the cowards on his staff were the real villains of the Star plot and people need to recognize that
@@BJGvideos ...I'm literally in the middle of a Scarlet challenge run right now. So I wouldn't label him as an evil villain, but more of a "character who wanted to do the right thing, but made the wrong decision that ended up doing the exact opposite."
Really, SV as a whole doesn't have a "proper villain", but rather a bunch of characters who just made poor decisions that ended up affecting future events.
Hey Jesse, I don't think you realised but the solo at 3:30 and the solo at 6:20 are actually completely different,

All three Team Star battle themes are excessively good.
lol, the grunt theme is a banger, which is a shame because most players destroy these guys in less than a minute and won't get to hear all of it.

8:45 Quick answer: Scarlet has a female professor and has a past/primal theme, whereas Violet has a male professor and has a future theme.
For your point on Pokémon and Sonic:
The answer is yes definitely they both have great ost across the board.
@@BJGvideos Not so coincidentally, those two happen to be my favorite of the main generation Pokemon stories.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but when it comes to version differences in soundtracks, I'm pretty sure the only differences have been:
- In Ruby and Sapphire, where the version dictates which of two organizations (Team Magma and Team Aqua) is playing the "main baddie", and each team has their own encounter theme (played directly before fighting one of the members, but also as a BGM in certain areas while it's occupied by members of the team), while in Emerald, a third version, the two organizations kinda take turns appearing in different locations and causing trouble, so you get to hear both themes. The actual battle themes are same for both teams.
- In Black and White and the sequels, there's a couple locations that are actually thematically complete opposites from one another between the versions, and the BGM matches that.

So, in essence, there's always something in these series for everyone
For gen 3, it's actually French horns.
Scarlet and Violet are the newest Switch games
Sadly also the ugliest and most bug-ridden Pokémon games yet! =/
Didn't think they'd be able to make a game that's uglier than Legends Arceus, but here we are! =P
At least the "Sonic rule" of the past applies to Pokémon as well:
No matter how bad the games are, the composers are doing an incredible job! =)
@@Kniffel101 honestly I didn't find Legends Arceus ugly at all (although the weird white pixels in caves were uh... yeah)
I wouldn't even call Star villains. At least Yell was a public pest, but Star kept to themselves.
The ending left me speechless. Come back, friend!
Conquest has really good music too. God, why is the Dragnor theme not in Smash yet?
I had forgotten how good the Team Star Boss theme was. It's really good. I was always so focused on the Revavroom destroying my team that I never noticed the music.
"Well that came out of the gate" Yeah so did that Revavroom
Final boss theme hits hard too 100% recommend
11:48 yes absolutely. I didnt care for the latest two generations, but I will always take a look at their OST bc damn its always filled with good stuff.
Can't remember the term but this song is supposed to actually playing in universe during the battle with the Team Star bosses and is even for the lore composed by one of the bosses of Team Star.
Edit:
As for the naming scheme, there's been a few instances where they haven't used colors.
Diegetic is the word you're looking for and that's the best part of this theme
Team Star is the villainous team of Scarlet/Violet, who are more-or-less delinquents who've been forced out of/left the pokemon trainer school that the player is in. Their leaders are all skilled trainers with different specialties and niches outside of battle that contribute to the crew as a whole;
The Dark Type Leader is also a DJ and cannonically made this music.
The Poison Type Leader is also Urianger from FFXIV and I will accept no other headcanon.
"Villainous" in name only basically. Spoilers:
They were good guys with bad press and the worst thing they did was skip school.
1:19 Actually this theme was composed by The Man Giacomo 😂
Yes they are still doing exclusive Pokemon but it's with the newest addition call "paradox Pokemon" Pokemon from the past or future respectively are evading the present.
the line of two different games in the same generation has continued for a long, long time. there's black and white, scarlet and violet, x and y, and so forth. they vary in differences when it comes to specific pokemon that can only be caught in that edition of the game and some games change the gym leaders that you fight !
Yeah the only main series game that's a standalone is Legends Arceus.
Can't wait for him to react the 10 second Elite 4 song
The Scarlet and Violet OST was composed, in part, by Toby Fox! You know, Undertale and Deltarune's Toby Fox! Here's hoping to see more of this OST in your channel. XD
(Teruo Taniguchi did an incredible job with this one though, really suits Team Star.)
Thanks for the video, as usual!
fun fact! this theme canonically exist in-universe.
team star is some sort of cult formed by a band of rogue students, each one of the band members was in charge of each aspect of team star(aesthetic, costumes) so one of them is the composer for the team's music.
edit: abount the quality of the games, that is in fact one of the most divisive questions you can make to any pokemon fan.
gen 8 games, sword and shield, are considered to be one of the worst games if not the lowest point in the franchise, but there's still fans of those games due to the good parts (like the music or the character designs)
and this last one, scarlet and violet, is one of the most divisive entries. because at a technical level, the games are embarrasing to look at, there was just no polish at all and some animations are atrocious. BUT, at a design and creative level, I seen a lot of people fall absolutely in love with it (me included), and put it out there as one of the best pokemon games
so yeah basically wether which pokemon games are good or not that's a topic that will never cease on the fandom ever.
I hope you react to the Penny Battle theme just because of how nuts it is lol
Maybe it sounds like that because the music sounds in universe too, and it's suppossed to sound from a big car with big speakers?
This song made each match feel so good, despite most of them being easy, except for the fighting type one, some themes in this game go hard, like Area Zero, hope someone commissions that one lol.
You’re correct in assuming the games have the same soundtrack and the different versions are mostly for version-exclusive Pokémon, but since Gold and Silver they do try and make the versions somewhat different plot-wise with the legendary Pokémon (though it’s mostly just “this Pokémon represents x and we need to use that power”)
In regards to the music being consistently good, I’d say it’s accurate most of the time (the only soundtrack that was mediocre belonged to the worst mainline game in the series, but even still it had some great bangers in it)
As for Team Star, they consist of bullying victims who overtime grew into delinquents that intimidate and threaten fellow students into joining their gang
Didn't they only rarely intimidate anybody? They just seemed to annoy Penny when they tried to get her to join.
What's the worst mainline games? Sword and Shield?
@@BJGvideos that’s more of a thing of the games not really showing us more of their antics with other students rather than Penny being the only in-world example
@@darkpyro786 To me it's Ultra Sun and Moon, because SM were so good and Ultra took a big shit over everything
@@BJGvideos Ultra really showed the beginning of the Pokemon Co.'s greed starting to leak over into the mainline games, since Black and White 2 were amazing second versions and then Ultra came and
1.Wasn't a sequel
"Well that came outta the gate" F yeah.
3:50 What a cool Sonic ost-POKEMON?!
This is probably my favorite Team Battle theme. The intro alone.
I have a long comment about SV themselves under the "read more" so this isn't just a reaction :P
0:33/12:30 Pokemon is the number-one media franchise in the entire world, larger than Mario, Star Wars, or any other, so its staying power has been incredible.
Oh, I believe I confused it with the Pokemon movie which I saw, they showed Togepi and assumed it was G1 lol. I guess that was the shoehorn.
The story was amazing and the ending was a series of successive gutpunches I absolutely was not prepared for. Spoilers:
...come back, robot friend...
@@JessesAuditorium Movie 1 also has Donphan, another generation 2 Pokémon. That was its first appearance! It's the elephant the pirate-looking trainer has at the beginning.
I should go back and play Scarlet's post-game. But yee these two have so many jamssssss.
What post game
Man I haven't touched Violet in months. I know I missed a lot of tera raid events too which makes me want to pick it back up even LESS
If you only play one more Pokémon game, it has to be HeartGold/Soulsilver.
something pokemon NEVER misses on is the music
gen 8's gym theme is pretty bad.
You should do a reaction to the songs Toby Fox made for Scarlet Violet!
I love how this isnt even the theme for the leader of Team Star, this is just the theme their lieutenants use.
Personally, my favorite track from S/V is the South Province wild battle theme. To answer your question, the two versions still pretty much work exactly as you described, basically just the same game with different Pokémon. Scarlet and Violet also have different professors, but that’s pretty much it.
Fun fact about this song:
It's Cannon, As in this song is Actually playing through loud speakers in the game
Gen 9 (Scarlet, Violet, And Legends Arceus) Has the best soundtrack since Gen 5
The fact this theme is used when the player fights bullied children is beyond me
Something to note that I hadn't really seen anyone else mention is that Toby Fox had a hand in a lot of Scarlet and Violet's soundtrack, either as the primary or some sort of co-producer.
Is because he doesn't work on a los of songs in the game, just 4 or 6
Yep, Pokemon music is always good, even when the game is lackluster -- as ling as you stay within the main series that is. There are a few spin offs with unimpressive soundtracks, but there are also a lot of spin off.
Some spinoffs like mystery dungeon however I would argue have better music that the main games.
The best part of this theme is that it's Diegetic
Scarlet and Violet's soundtrack has a couple bangers. This and Cassiopeia hit pretty hard, but nothing beats Bede's theme from Sword and Shield for me from the Switch games. As for version differences, it's almost exactly the same as back in the old days. Version exclusive pokemon and Legendaries. Sword and Shield had a change in gym leaders/types but otherwise was the same thing. The soundtrack though is definitely the same htough.
A couple? LOL that's a massive understatement of epic proportions.
I remember taking my sweet time beating Bede just to listen to his theme. Definitely in my top 10.
Scarlet and Violet are the newest mainline games that unfortunately released very glitchy on Nintendo Switch(first since GB/DS era). It still had decent story and enough interesting things I'd consider it a okay game.
Theres a bit more than exclusive pokemon, some story events are swapped around, some outfits you can wear etc, mostly the same though
Well it had XY which was apparently points on a dimensional plane
Pokemon music in general goes hard, bosses go harder, and Scarlet/Violet in general just kicks it up to another level.
I played this game I didn't know it went this hard lmao. I clapped them so fast.
The difference between Scarlet and Violet are some of the pokemon, the themes of past and future, and the Professor is different too
Pokemon Scarlet and Violet had many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many, many problems, but the music is not one of them.
This is pokemons first open world game
Honestly, as much as I loved Penny’s and Arven’s stories, Area Zero and its story frickin CARRIED the game.
Let's see Penny's theme! That one is a freaking BLAST! Completely blindsided me, but in the best of ways. :D
He really has to react to the AI Sada and Turo battle theme, that one is THE BEST pokemon track of all times besides zinnias theme. And it is composed by the man Toby Fox himself, so good
I was a bit disappointed that he did eventually react to it but did so without any context as to the themes used in it
good lord bro your eye, you okay?
Jesse, is your (right?) eye alright?
It's so red on the outside. Maybe it was a short-time thing?
Hope you're doing well! =)
And since I'm at that part of the video right now:
To someone who started playing the games in the early 2000s, the mainline Pokémon games have been getting worse and worse with every 3D entry. But yes, the soundtracks are usually awesome, no matter the game's quality.
The spin-off games are usually of high quality, though, both as games and with their OSTs! =D
Common Giacomo W.
The theme of a bunch of punk kids composed in-universe by one of the same punk kids so their battles would be cooler.
