This is by far the best episode. That man has so much knowledge that could be shared... in the true sense of the word, man is a treasure of experience and knowledge. Thank you for this Joey!! Greetings from Serbia!
Guys like this who are real true hobbyists, you could listen to all day long, because of their knowledge alone, let alone master breeders, they can tell you stuff about things in the hobby you’ve never heard of or knew off, these guys are true jewels in the hobby. 👍 Another great find Joey. 👏
@@thekingofdiy while you’re at it, can you also ask if any of them have videos or writings you can share on your site. Even if it’s their response to Q&A from the club forums. I’m experimenting with discus, and beef heart killed some plants. More tips on discus would be great. I think original hobbyists like the ones in this video would have suggested a better method for discus keeping in a planted aquarium. I love how you keep the hobby affordable and attractive with creativity esp. amid these unprecedented times and challenges that discourage people from indulging in things that make hobbies enjoyable. I over filter, but I also overstock.🤣 Keep sharing those “insane” tips that work but you don’t know how, like the paper you used to clean algae that was dry and stuck on the glass. It’d would also be nice to see a video where you DIY the house, like the dishwasher 🤣 but frfr 💯
This was one of the best visits I've seen. I was sad to see the 32 minute video end. It felt like it just started. I learned so much in that short time.
I was on a time crunch that day unfortunately. With many more fish rooms and stores waiting for me. I didnt want to leave either! I wish i had gotten him on my podcast. When i return, i will!
It's not just a hobby for him and he is not just a hobbyist, it's a life style for him and I believe this is the only way greatness can be achieved. Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it.
What a treasure! Important that younger fish keepers learn and document the vast knowledge from people like him. Grateful to that you and LRB, etc. respect and involve yourselves in fish clubs and the senior members. Going to try the sponge plant trick! Love the tip on Jobe’s fertilizer sticks for ferns.
Back in the day old aquarium water was like holy water. Water changes weren't a thing. Anytime I moved I transported every drop of aquarium water with me. You just didn't siphon out old water and replace it with fresh tap water. I never did water changes until I started with discus in the 80's then it started to make sense as the science evolved and became available to hobbyist mainly through magazines like TFH.
I throughly enjoyed this video! There’s nothing like legacy knowledge that exhibits why methods work. Newer generations tend to overlook the important intricacies of older methods, so they don’t have the expected outcomes. If he’d be so kind to do a FaceTime like video with you to talk more about those invaluable insights, that’ll really get a modern visionary like you going even stronger! I’ve been watching you for a few years Joey. I’m very happy for what this hobby has done for you wholisticly (your whole man, $, wisdom, etc.,). You’ve got a pot of gold in knowledge with this one. I’d suggest getting as much as possible. I’m watching you & praying for you. Stay up and follow your heart Joey, likes, views, etc., will keep following you because your gifts make room for you. Also, continue to be humble 😉 best wishes
I left the hobby years ago, but now that I am retired, I am returning to the hobby. I ran across this channel looking for basement ideas... so ty Joey for getting me back in the hobby. Now if I can just get on the discord channel... lol
These are the best type of fish room tours/experiences! I'm so happy that I have a local club and community that is so active. I get to rub elbows with so many master breeders and learn from them it's so much fun!
This is what Joey will also be when he gets older. Still with a fish room too 😁 ..and probably same for me. I have fish since I was a teenager and I still keep fish at my current age of 33. 😁 Still not thinking of quitting this hobby ..and I will always have at least 1 (fairly big) tank in my house. Cuz I enjoy having like a corner of (living) nature in my house (for some women might be by having flowers in the house ..for me is having fish in the aquarium ..and that aquarium can have some plants too). 😁
So cool to this this kind of content. This guy is one of the "founding fathers" of the hobby you could say lol He was definitely way ahead of his time and without trailblazers like him we would never have the things we do today in the industry. Thanks for the video!
Mattenfilter is the equivalent to turning your aquarium into the canitster filter. Great for polishing the water. Plus fish clubs are still cool your just remembering it again lol Great vid Great Keeper
Bless their hearts. And their strawberries 🍓 Fish clubs do need to make comebacks. He reminds me of my grandpa. He was into fish, but more into catching them 😅 Bit different of hobbies, but he still respected them. Both of these men are a national treasure.
Sure you can get the info online, but it's not the same as actually being there. It's like watching someone on your playlist on tv playing their hit songs. It's not the same as actually being there at the gig. It's the experience, the vibe. It's the feeling that everyone shares the same passion as you. So good on ya DIY for trying to keep the grass roots alive. We can learn so much from the older generation. If new tech can make things easier and more efficient or not a chore, then I'm all for it.
Thanks for sharing this video with us, Joey. I am in my 50th year in the hobby. Yet, he traveled in the Amazon 18 years before I got the fish keeping bug. His aquariums look great, as do his fish. Hope you thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Happy fish keeping to all. 😁👍🐟🐟🐠🐠
Hello, from Kingston Ontario... its folks like Dan and folks like you who got me into fish many years ago..there was a shop that had a lion fish and asian arowana .. it was amazing to my 10 year old eyes i would go there almost every day after schoo.. saved my pennies and picked up a small tank... then got a 30 gallon for xmas ..l than a few years later my first real job i was 15 was at a tropical fish shop... I learned about breeding Cichilids and other egg layers like Angels... now Im getting back into the hobby after 20 years ... so much has changed ...
lol, the intro to this video made me think.. Joey was recently talking about wanting to make some new merch.. Alright Joey, Red shirts “Make Fish Clubs Cool Again” 😂 i’d ABSOLUTELY buy one hahaha
I love that he points out how easy it is. All this information is easily available to us on the Internet. I imagine he had to use books and other hobbyists as his only source for a while which makes this even more impressive. Motivates me to do try to spawn more "hard" fish.
this shot is very cultivating, it shows us how effective simple things are. no need for a large settling filter or large canister filters, a simple hamburg matter filter does all the effect. I would like to know what is the thickness and the density of the foams used by this gentleman. and thank you .
I love looking at the aquariums of people who have been in the hobby for so long. People who haven't been brainwashed by today's brands and products. We have a lot to learn from them.
When I started keeping fish about 25years ago, my mentor was also a local breeding champ. He collected livebearers from South America and bred bristle nose plecos, he passed away 3years ago at 78.
My spotted Raphael catfish has ick and gave it to my jacks I raise the temperature slowly to 86 and added aquarium salt and in about a week it was gone I still have the fiah haven’t had that problem now I keep my aquariums at about 78-81
I've been wondering if I could use regular plant fertilizer spikes in my tank and now I know. I've already added that brand he said to my cart on Amazon lol.. thanks for sharing this with us..
I’m in the northwest Ohio aquarium society we have meetings every month. I love it I can go sell my plant trimmings and then use that money and get a couple cool fish every month. I’ve made over $50 some meetings just selling plant trimmings I’d normally be throwing away. And I get to meet other people that keep fish
the females just go wherever they want to.. wherever they feel like leaving and some eggs somewhere. they don't don't seem to care which male happens to be available at that time. preech.. I felt that
You should tell him to start a channel and have his granddaughter record him and help him edit. She can make $$ and so can he to find their hobby. I’m sure he has so many stories with such a long time in the hobby it would be amazing to hear some breeding stories and many other things. see what he thinks about it. Thanks for this one
I don’t think fish clubs will ever be as big as they used to be. Times have changed. People get their information online, and can share their success stories on social media. Meeting in person is the main benefit to fish clubs, but unfortunately many don’t see this as a perk these days.
Im dedicating 2023 to changing that perspective. Im going to these clubs to not only speak and promote them, but bring back the proof that everyone is missing out!
That's my Grandpa!
Happy he got to share with everyone his hobbies! :)
Very cool man !😊
I first met this guy when I got into the hobby 30 years ago, he has such a wealth of knowledge. The man has forgotten more than I know.
A huge benifit to joining clubs like this is getting to know and rub shoulders with these guys!
Next time throw a piece of that plant in a bag and take it home!!!!!!
The guy has been into fish keeping since before a lot of us were born…there’s so much knowledge in his brain…
facts!
And he didn’t have the internet to learn!
It would be better if each guests got their own portable mic, much better way to record conversations. Love your videos as always!
This is by far the best episode.

i feel the same.

They are all tucked away in fish clubs. Im going to find them all this year!!

If his wife keeps feeding me the cakes like she made, i have no problem with that! haha

"Stick with what works" that's why I still love the under gravel filters. Since 84

Old fish stuff works better than the new ones
when are you getting goldfish again ?

My fish’s club is cool in Kitchener, Ontario CA.
I used to live in Kitchener as a child!
Have you looked at using AI for the audio? Should be perfect for people who do fish tank channels. It can remove the pump noises for you.
Womans : For how long you will keep having aquariuns and having all this expenses and troubles? Man : Show this video. Womans : OMFG. The end.
At around 9:50 I can’t hear what type of fish he says he likes better than bettas any one else hear him?
Known Dan for 20+ years.

Inspiring.. but I dnt know how he puts up with those nosy air pumps.
That was the mics picking them up more than usual. They were not that bad in person.
